Review by William Ruhlmann [-] Allmusic
Paul Kantner's debut solo album actually was credited to Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship, the first use of the Starship billing, predating the formation of the group with that name by four years. Kantner used it, extrapolating on the name of his current band, Jefferson Airplane, to refer to Blows's science fiction concept: A bunch of left-wing hippies closely resembling his San Francisco Bay Area compatriots hijack a government-built starship and head off to re-start the human race on another planet. Kantner had presaged this post-apocalyptic colonization idea on Wooden Ships on the last Airplane album, Volunteers, and here he expanded it out to album length with the help of members of The Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, plus assorted others, a shifting supergroup informally known as PERRO, The Planet Earth Rock And Roll Orchestra. (Kantner later would borrow that name for a subsequent solo album.) Blows actually was a little loose as concept albums go, seeming as concerned with the arrival of Kantner and Grace Slick's baby as with the departure of the starship. Kantner employed often dense instrumentation and complex arrangements, but there were enough hooks and harmonies to keep things interesting. Blows eventually went gold, and it was even nominated for a science fiction award usually reserved for novels.

Jefferson Airplane guitarist, vocalist and co-founding member Paul Kantner has died. He was 74.
Kantner passed away on Thursday (Jan. 28) of multiple organ failure, following a heart attack earlier in the week.
From 1965-1972, Jefferson Airplane was a pioneer in the Bay Area counterculture psychedelic rock scene, first defining what became known as the “San Francisco sound.”
Kantner and guitarist and vocalist Marty Balin formed the band in a bar called the Drinking Gourd, intending the group to be a folk-rock group. Amidst the city’s drug experimentation, they developed something far more interesting.
“Jefferson Airplane had the fortune or misfortune of discovering Fender Twin Reverb amps and LSD in the same week while in college. That’s a great step forward," Kantner told author and music historian Harvey Kubernik. "We went into it our normal selves…. The point is if you find something that makes you joyful take note of it. Amplify it if you can. Tell other people about it. That’s what San Francisco was about. Both musically, idealistically and metaphorically and every other way. That’s what we did here.”

Paul Kantner, a founding member and singer-guitarist of Jefferson Airplane, died on Thursday.
The San Francisco native was 74 and died of multiple organ failure and septic shock after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week, his publicist and friend Cynthia Bowman said in a statement.
The iconic rocker, who later founded spin-off band Jefferson Starship, helped pioneer the city's sound in the mid '60s with psychedelic hits like "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit."
"Our condolences go out to the friends, family and fans of Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane on the news of his passing," the Doors wrote on their Facebook page.
"Music would not be the same without the sounds of The Doors and Jefferson Airplane, which both contributed so heavily to the signature sound of the sixties and seventies," they continued.
Kantner helped form Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and the group had five albums that went gold. They went on to play in landmark events, such as Woodstock and the Altamont Speedway Free Festival with the Rolling Stones in 1969.

This is a very rare Album. So treated it accordingly with reverence.. Paul Kantner, and his last solo studio album. The title is an unofficial name for San Francisco artists who recorded on various albums in 1970 - 1973, also known as PERRO. The song "Mountain Song" is dedicated "to David C, Jerry G, Graham N, Grace S, David F, Billy K and Mickey H and to one summer when all of our schedules almost didn't conflict," and was written during the 70's by Kantner and Jerry Garcia.

THE STORY: The Short Version
PART ONE: AMERICA The Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra is a San Francisco band that, in the near future, develops a computer assisted telepathic amplification technology. In using the machines on everything from their audience to forms of weather control and extrasensory spying, they attract the attention of various government agencies and right wing religious forces. Eventually they are forced to flee an increasingly repressive American society for the safety of ...
PART TWO: AUSTRALIA... BEYOND Oz, oddly enough, is the name some Australians attach to their country. It is here that the band flees to a settlement deep in the blistering hot Australian outback. Over fifteen hundred people have formed a settlement that is near totally self-sufficient. Weather control, a system of lakes, forests and mountains, underground agriculture and huge machines all serve to support this community. The U.S. government agents eventually discover the settlement and launch an attack to recover the extrasensory technology for cold war use. The children of the settlement are led to construct a telepathic shield around the colony and they escape into space in the "Edge of Your Shield" climax.
REVIEW: Thirteen years after his first solo album, Blows Against the Empire, Paul Kantner delivered this sequel, named after the loose affiliation of Bay Area musicians who had played on Blows and subtitled, The Empire Blows Back. Like the first album, this one was a science fiction concept album about a commune/rock band eventually fleeing into outer space to escape right-wing oppression. Though the participants this time were limited mostly to Kantner's family (his son, daughter, and ex-wife, Grace Slick, all sing) and his band, Jefferson Starship, and though it was a bit harder rocking than its predecessor, the album shared Blows's vague idealism and complicated arrangements. Kantner remained an electrified folkie with a cosmic edge, and you needed the inserted page of liner notes to follow the story line. But Grace Slick, especially, was in good vocal form, and certain tunes, notably Kantner's collaboration with Jerry Garcia, "The Mountain Song," were among the strongest material he'd come up with lately. But this album was a swan song for Kantner as a solo: After its release and commercial failure, he quit The Starship (taking "Jefferson" with him) and launched the short-lived KBC Band.

Credited to Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, and David Freiberg, Baron von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun was the first album made by these erstwhile members of Jefferson Airplane since the breakup of that group. Like such other spin-off projects as Blows Against the Empire and Sunfighter, this one featured a supporting cast of San Francisco Bay Area musicians including present and former members of a variety of groups, such as The Grateful Dead (lead guitarist Jerry Garcia, percussionist Mickey Hart, and lyricist Robert Hunter, who wrote the words to "Harp Tree Lament"), Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (singer David Crosby), and The Flying Burrito Brothers (bassist Chris Ethridge), as well as other former members of The Airplane and future members of Jefferson Starship. The Pointer Sisters even guested on one track. Despite the co-billing, the album's guiding force was Slick, who sang on every track and wrote or co-wrote six of the ten songs, though there was still room for the unbilled Jack Traylor to write, play acoustic guitar, and sing lead vocals on the song "Flowers of the Night," a celebration of monarchial overthrows throughout history. Perhaps more outside songwriting should have been employed, since the compositions here were second-rate. The public was catching on, too: Kantner's Blows Against the Empire had reached the Top 20, but Baron von Tollbooth didn't come near the Top 100. The team would attempt one more splinter project, Slick's "solo" album Manhole, then re-organize as Jefferson Starship in 1974 with the notable return of singer/songwriter Marty Balin.

Paul Lorin Kantner (March 17, 1941 – January 28, 2016) was an American guitarist and vocalist, known for co-founding Jefferson Airplane, a psychedelic rock band of the counterculture era, and its more commercial spin-off band Jefferson Starship.
Kantner was born in San Francisco, California on March 17, 1941. He attended Santa Clara University and San Jose State College, completing a total of three years before he dropped out to enter the music scene. During the summer of 1965, singer Marty Balin saw Kantner perform at the Drinking Gourd, a San Francisco folk club, and invited him to co-found a new band, Jefferson Airplane.
Although the band was originally formed by Marty Balin, Kantner eventually became the leader of Jefferson Airplane and led the group through its highly successful late 1960s period. In 1970, while still active with Jefferson Airplane, Kantner and several Bay Area musicians recorded a one-off side project under the name "Paul Kantner and the Jefferson Starship." Jefferson Airplane continued to record and perform until 1972. When the band officially broke up, Kantner revived the Jefferson Starship name and continued to record and perform with that band for the next five decades. Kantner had the longest continuous membership with the band; at times he was the only founding member still in the band from the original Jefferson Airplane lineup. Kantner and his Jefferson Airplane bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. In 1991 Kantner and Balin reformed Jefferson Starship and Kantner continued to tour and record with the band through 2013. On March 25, 2015, it was reported that Kantner had suffered a heart-attack. Kantner returned to the group later on in the year, in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane with special shows that also featured Grateful Dead tribute group Jazz is Dead. Kantner's primary instrument was the rhythm guitar, and he also sang lead or backup vocals.
Kantner passed away on January 28, 2016 at the age of 74 due to multiple organ failure and septic shock. These symptoms were the direct result of a heart attack he suffered days earlier.

Jefferson Airplane - 1969 The Woodstock Experience
"Three Days Of Peace & Music", das war der Slogan vom 15. - 17. August 1969, beim legendären Woodstock-Festival.Aber auch politisch wurde es in Woodstock - spätestens dann, wenn Jefferson Airplane die 'Volunteers Of America' dazu aufriefen, eine Revolution anzuzetteln: »Hey now it's time for you and me ,got a revolution, got to revolution...«

The Alternate Remember My Name Album
1971
David Crosby's now classic If I Could Only Remember My Name featured members of CSN&Y;, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana on the illustrious guest list. If I Could Only Remember My Name was regarded as one of the best sounding albums of the early 70s but this is some of the coolest Crosby you'll ever hear.

This is where you go after Woodstock - to hijack America and start something new, "we are not sure what it is yet" With Jack Cassidy doing a psychedelic thing on the bass, Kantner strumming on the guitar, Jerry Garcia playing around with the banjo, Grace Slick bouncing around on the piano, the music is as brave as the lyrics in defying convention, ready to take you on a trip into the unknown to steer humanity in a whole new direction.

The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra is a nickname given to artists who recorded together in the early 1970s. They were predominantly members of Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their first album together was Blows Against the Empire, when they were known as Jefferson Starship. The name changed to Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra for the next album, David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name. During the sessions for Crosby's album at Wally Heider Studios, the musicians of each band were invited to the sessions and rehearsed hours of material, and everything was recorded. Material played during these recorded sessions in 1971 was used for Crosby's album (the "PERRO Chorus" is credited on the song, "What Are Their Names") and several other solo albums after Crosby's. The name Jefferson Starship was later used for Paul Kantner and Grace Slick's new band formed in 1974. Paul Kantner recorded a solo album in 1983 as a tribute to this time, Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra.

Summary:
Paul Kantner opens this show with an interesting observation: "Ah, the late show here. It used to be the young kids would always come to the late show to get home in time for curfew and the old folks would stay for the late show. Now all the old folks come to the early show and the young kids stay late..." The year was 1988, and for the San Francisco music scene, it seemed everything that goes around, comes around again.
The legendary Fillmore Auditorium was back in business, and playing on stage was the famed acoustic duo of Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, better known as acoustic Hot Tuna. The duo, which formed in 1970 as a side project featuring two of the six members of the Jefferson Airplane, eventually added Airplane drummer Johnny Barbata and violinist Papa John Creach to become Electric Hot Tuna. But on this night, it was back to the original two-man, acoustic lineup for an evening of old time blues and country-blues standards.
This show, part of a multiple night stand at the Fillmore recorded by promoter Bill Graham for his archives, includes a few surprises. On hand for the show were electric Hot Tuna member Papa John Creach, who contributes his tasteful violin runs on a few songs, including the boogie romp, "John's Other." Also on hand is Jefferson Airplane/Starship founder Paul Kantner, who sits on a few Airplane and KBC Band songs, among them, the 1967 Airplane classic "Martha." And Grace Slick sits in too, contributing vocals on "Good Shepherd" and the set-closing "Volunteers". Surprises aside, this is a solid collection of classic Hot Tuna including Reverend Gary Davis' "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning," "Candy Man," Bukka White's 1930s prison lament, " Parchman Farm," and the band's own catchy instrumental, "Water Song." Another highlight is Kaukonen's solo acoustic number for the Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow album, "Embryonic Journey." Hot Tuna (both acoustic and electric) remain a touring act, and Paul Kantner is overseeing yet another incarnation of Jefferson Starship. Sadly, Papa John Creach died in 1994, at the age of 76.

»Alright, friends, you have seen the heavy groups, now you will see morning maniac music, believe me, it's a new dawn...«
The Airplane's set is a long one, the longest in the Woodstock Experience series, clocking in at over 90 minutes, but it's enthralling throughout. Whether it's the electrified versions of the tunes from Surrealistic Pillow -- "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "White Rabbit," and "Somebody to Love," or the 14-minute space rock in "The Ballad of You, Me & Pooneil," from After Bathing at Baxter's with its massive bass solo by Jack Casady, or the ragged but righteous "House at Pooneil Corners" from Crown of Creation, the Airplane prove here that they could rock with the best of them. Their set as a whole is explosive and full of surprises, with excellent vocal work from Grace Slick and Marty Balin, and very sophisticated interplay between Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Casady, guest pianist Nicky Hopkins, and drummer Spencer Dryden.

Some excellent reference material on the PERRO sessions:
http://www.philzone.com/philbase/perro.html
DETAILS
On 8/23/91 a copy of the several PERRO reels were compiled onto a DT 120 DAT on request by Paul to Graham (since the tapes where kept in the latter's vault) for a copy.
When the Crosby, Stills & Nash box-set was being put together, some mystery reels were found.
All of the CSNY tape collection was brought in to one place for the first time, including personal collections of Barncard, Joel Bernstein, Nash and Stills. One of the PERRO tapes had a small pipe with weed in it and somebody smoked it! It was still good.
The material on the PERRO tapes was very interesting, but had nothing to do with CSNY. There were 4 reels of 2 track mixes made in 1971 during the sessions (obviously there is more that has never been mixed). The tapes were put into storage in Nash's vault.
Paul called Nash in 1992 and requested DATs of those tapes. This was the first time they had been outside of the CSNY organization. They were copied at
A&M; Post Production audio and my personal DAT was made at that time.
The roots of PER&RO; go back a lot further than 1971. 1 guess it had its inception in the early years of the '60s (prior to the Airplane, the Byrds et al) when Kantner, Crosby and Freiberg used to hang out, play music, get high and rap together around Venice Beach. That was the initial bond, the start of it all.

David Crosby's now classic If I Could Only Remember My Name featured members of CSN&Y;, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana on the illustrious guest list. This is Hot Tuna live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, USA, on the 4th March 1988. Hot Tuna are an American blues-rock band formed originally by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. They are renowned for playing acoustic and electric versions of original and traditional blues songs.
There is a strong likelihood that this concert that bought Paul Kantner and Grace Slick back on the stage together helped the Jefferson Airplane reunion tour and record in 1989 to come about.
Regarding this period in both bands history wikipedia states - Hot Tuna was reformed again as an acoustic band in 1986 performing classic material, with Joey Balin joining on rhythm guitar until 1987. Kantner joined the band in 1987 and 1988 adding some old
Airplane songs to the set list. Grace Slick showed up on stage as well for one show at The Fillmore in March, 1988. The band continued into 1989 and Jorma and Jack joined the 1989 Jefferson Airplane reunion album and tour, performing acoustic Hot Tuna sets in the middle of each show.
This is the second set that evening from the band and the acoustic musicianship is superb (as commented on by Grace Slick). The late (and incredible) Papa John Creach is also a joy to listen to on violin during the latter parts of the gig.
