VICE Talks Film: Kathryn Bigelow & Matthew Heineman on 'Cartel Land'
Cartel Land is a riveting, on-the-ground documentary following parallel stories of US and Mexican vigilantes fighting back against the ruthless drug cartels on either side of the border. It's an excellent documentary, and VICE has teamed with distributors The Orchard to help promote it nationwide.
For this episode of VICE Talks Film, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker)—who recently signed on as an executive producer of the film—sat down with filmmaker Matthew Heineman to discuss his fearless process in capturing this harrowing story and the ever-evolving world of the cartel's stranglehold on communities

In Colombia, the heirs to Pablo Escobar's drug empire are conducting business as usual — though with a somewhat lower profile. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city's slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed.
VICE News travelled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner work

Donald Trump Thinks He Could Take Mexican Drug Lord 'El Chapo'
Earlier today, the Associated Press reported that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, notorious drug lord and formerly the No. 1 most wanted by the American DEA, has escaped from a maximum-security prison and is currently at large.
El Chapo escaped through a 1-mi. long tunnel from a small opening in his cell. A manhunt for the leader of the wide-reaching Sinaloa Cartel began late Saturday, but if authorities do not locate him in 48 hours, it is believed they may not be able to capture him a second time.
All that, and a man whose idea of national security involves simply putting a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, thinks he could probably go toe-to-

Mexican Oil and Drug Cartels: Cocaine & Crude (Full Length)
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.
Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

For this episode of VICE Talks Film, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker)—who recently signed on as an executive producer of the film—sat down with filmmaker Matthew Heineman to discuss his fearless process in capturing this harrowing story and the ever-evolving world of the cartel's stranglehold on communities north and south of the border.

The Gangs That Inherited Pablo Escobar's Drug Empire: Cooking with Cocaine

In Colombia, the heirs to Pablo Escobar's drug empire are conducting business as usual — though with a somewhat lower profile. Today's Medellin drug cartels are highly structured and run much like multinational corporations. But violent gangs operating in the city's slums provide the muscle; known as combos, they’ve carved Medellin into fiefdoms, imposing invisible borders between gang territory — borders that, when ignored, often get people killed.
VICE News travelled to Medellin to meet gang members — along with top cartel leaders and assassins — who revealed the inner workings of the city's modern-day cocaine industry.

USA: MEXICAN AMBASSADOR INTERVIEW ON DRUG TRAFFICKING
Spanish/Nat
The U-S decision to recertify Mexico's scandal-ridden anti-drug programme on Friday will smooth relations between the neighbouring countries on the contentious issue according to the Mexican ambassador to the U-S.
U-S President Clinton recertified Mexico as a fully cooperating ally deserving of aid in the struggle against narcotics smuggling.
Jesus Silva Herzog said the decision was a recognition that no country, regardless of its importance or power, can act alone to fight the drug war.
The Mexican Ambassador to the U-S, Jesus Silva Herzog, welcomed the announcement by the Clinton administration to recertify Mexico's anti-drug programme.
The decision will earn Mexico another year of U-S anti-drug aid and support in international forums.
Herzog told Associated Press Television that it was recognition of the international effort needed to fight drug trafficking.
SOUNDBITE:(Spanish)
"I believe we can say that it represents a recognition of an effort that Mexico has been making for years, but particularly in the last 12 months. It is also a recognition of President Zedillo's political conviction to combat the traffic of drugs and for confronting the phenomenon of corruption which has been affecting Mexico for a long time. It is also a recognition that no country, regardless of its importance or power, can act alone to fight this phenomenon. It is precisely cooperation what we need among nations."
SUPER CAPTION: Jesus Silva Herzog, Mexico's Ambassador to the U-S
However, the Mexican Ambassador reiterated his government's concern with the process of certification.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
" We have expressed our opinion in public on several occasions. It seems to us that it is difficult to understand how the most important consuming nation in the world stands up as a judge to evaluate the actions that other countries carry out in the war on drugs. It seems to us also that in essence we need to find mechanisms which stimulate, not hold back, cooperation. It is therefore that we think we can find formulas to try to work closer and in more coordination to face a problem with global dimensions and which affect all the nations involved equally; producing nations, transit nations and consuming nations. We are facing a Mafia which each day designs new methods of distribution and invents new kinds of drugs such as the ones now being made from chemical derivatives. We need to work more and better for the only way to succeed is by doing it together. "
SUPER CAPTION: Jesus Silva Herzog, Mexico's Ambassador to the U-S
Herzog also said the recertification by the White House showed Mexico's efforts to crack down on drugs were being appreciated.
SOUNDBITE:(Spanish)
"The relations between Mexico and the United States are very complex, extensive and diversified. I think that the fact that Mexico's efforts have been recognized is simply, or are based on the facts, on what Mexico did during the last year in its war on drugs. The establishment of a high-level contact group, the advances in eradication, in arrests, in the passing of new laws to combat money laundering and to combat organized crime are deeds very fundamental, upon which great advances were achieved last year and I think that the judgement and the recognition expressed this afternoon by the White House through the State Department are fundamentally based on those facts."
SUPER CAPTION: Jesus Silva Herzog, Mexico's Ambassador to the U-S
The recertification also benefits the United States in its war on drugs - statistics from the Drug Enforcement Administration show that an estimated 70 percent of all cocaine entering the United States comes from Mexico.

All that, and a man whose idea of national security involves simply putting a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, thinks he could probably go toe-to-to with El Chapo.

Mexico Loses US Drug War Money Over Appalling Human Rights
The US State Department has cut off millions of dollars in anti-drug funds to Mexico after deciding that it failed to reach some human rights goals. This development comes amid several cases of alleged abuses by Mexican security forces, including the disappearance of 43 students in the southern state of Guerrero last year. How does this move affect Mexico’s drug war? Watch it on the Lip News with Jo Ankier and Margaret Howell.
