Today was supposed to be a meeting of EU Finance ministers to push through the bailout of Papademos' technocrat led government in Greece.
This decision cam after the Greek parliament already passed brutal new austerity measures and privatization plans while their people were outside rioting and burning the center of the ancient city to ashes, including the historic Attikon theater to the ground. The violence perpetrated against the protestors as well as the violence perpetrated by the protestors was extreme, and Papademos stated in Parliament that such violence "has no place in a democracy."
Unfortunately, Greece has ceased to be a democracy according to Nigel Farage.
Farage gave a speech before the European Parliament this morning, where he took the TROIKA to task for acting like an imperial power, pressing its boot on the throat of the Greek people. The TROIKA meanwhile, has told Greek "leaders" that it needs more assurances from them. Antonis Samaras for one, has been backpedaling ever since the referendum call made by George Papandreou late last year, and his latest attempt to straddle the lines of public opinion and troika financing ruffled some feathers with his creditors.
He was forced afterwards to write a letter to them committing himself to the recent memorandum after alarming eurozone leaders when he said he may seek to renegotiate the terms of the bailout after the next elections in the spring.
Adding insult to injury, German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble said in a radio interview that nothing short of a technocratic government like that of Monti's may be required to stem the crisis in Greece.
So what is going on here? What are these Greek politicians doing? What are they thinking?
We have been so used to politicians always doing what is in their electoral interests -- making sure, first and foremost, that they get reelected -- but now they are doing the opposite of this, and all this in the face of INTENSE political and physical pressure: literally.
An angry mob recently chucked molotov cocktails at the residence of the Greek president, and as recently as this Sunday night, a mob of Greeks amassed beneath the apartment building of Kostas Simitis, the former Greek prime minister from the late 90's and early 2000's chanting traitor and urging him to come out and face their ire.
This social unrest has political consequences that go further than just the daily electoral grind. Recent polls in Greece show that not only are the major parties losing support, but the minor, fringe parties are gaining steam, including a far right-wing party known as New Dawn (ΧΡΥΣΗ ΑΥΓΗ) which is a hairs away from getting enough support to receive seats in parliament.
Is there a risk that greek politics could indeed become radicalized in ways that will make a eurzone exit seem the least of the countries worries? And what about the possibility that all this rage towards the political class could lead to assassinations of leaders? Assassinations of politicians as we have seen not only in Europe before, but in Greece as well?

Ultra-nationalist political parties scored unprecedented victories at the European elections, making the rise of the far-right in Europe impossible to ignore. Many of these groups, some of which are openly neo-Nazi, are gaining strength everywhere.
In Sweden, there's been a sharp rise in political violence in the country, with crimes carried out by radical groups making headlines. However, what's unusual is that one of the most violent extremist organizations in Sweden aligns itself not with Nazism and the far-right, but with anti-fascism and the far-left.
Known as the Revolutionary Front, this group of militant socialists aim to crush fascism by any means necessary. VICE News set out to try and find the Revolutionary Front, and to understand the unlikely rise of the militant far-left in Sweden.

The nature and means of the rise of fascism in pre-war Europe and Japan. This is from a film commissioned by the US War Dept in c.1942 entitled "Why We Fight". It is an interesting look at how the rise of fascism was received by most Americans contemporary to the period. It should also serve as a warning not to reach for desperate measures during desperate times, as people often want to do. Edited down for runtime as well as to focus on the methods fascism employed to enjoy such a meteoric (if brief) rise in world history.

Today was supposed to be a meeting of EU Finance ministers to push through the bailout of Papademos' technocrat led government in Greece.
This decision cam after the Greek parliament already passed brutal new austerity measures and privatization plans while their people were outside rioting and burning the center of the ancient city to ashes, including the historic Attikon theater to the ground. The violence perpetrated against the protestors as well as the violence perpetrated by the protestors was extreme, and Papademos stated in Parliament that such violence "has no place in a democracy."
Unfortunately, Greece has ceased to be a democracy according to Nigel Farage.
Farage gave a speech before the European Parliament this morning, where he took the TROIKA to task for acting like an imperial power, pressing its boot on the throat of the Greek people. The TROIKA meanwhile, has told Greek "leaders" that it needs more assurances from them. Antonis Samaras for one, has been backpedaling ever since the referendum call made by George Papandreou late last year, and his latest attempt to straddle the lines of public opinion and troika financing ruffled some feathers with his creditors.
He was forced afterwards to write a letter to them committing himself to the recent memorandum after alarming eurozone leaders when he said he may seek to renegotiate the terms of the bailout after the next elections in the spring.
Adding insult to injury, German finance minister Wolfgang Schauble said in a radio interview that nothing short of a technocratic government like that of Monti's may be required to stem the crisis in Greece.
So what is going on here? What are these Greek politicians doing? What are they thinking?
We have been so used to politicians always doing what is in their electoral interests -- making sure, first and foremost, that they get reelected -- but now they are doing the opposite of this, and all this in the face of INTENSE political and physical pressure: literally.
An angry mob recently chucked molotov cocktails at the residence of the Greek president, and as recently as this Sunday night, a mob of Greeks amassed beneath the apartment building of Kostas Simitis, the former Greek prime minister from the late 90's and early 2000's chanting traitor and urging him to come out and face their ire.
This social unrest has political consequences that go further than just the daily electoral grind. Recent polls in Greece show that not only are the major parties losing support, but the minor, fringe parties are gaining steam, including a far right-wing party known as New Dawn (ΧΡΥΣΗ ΑΥΓΗ) which is a hairs away from getting enough support to receive seats in parliament.
Is there a risk that greek politics could indeed become radicalized in ways that will make a eurzone exit seem the least of the countries worries? And what about the possibility that all this rage towards the political class could lead to assassinations of leaders? Assassinations of politicians as we have seen not only in Europe before, but in Greece as well?

In Sweden, there's been a sharp rise in political violence in the country, with crimes carried out by radical groups making headlines. However, what's unusual is that one of the most violent extremist organizations in Sweden aligns itself not with Nazism and the far-right, but with anti-fascism and the far-left.
Known as the Revolutionary Front, this group of militant socialists aim to crush fascism by any means necessary. VICE News set out to try and find the Revolutionary Front, and to understand the unlikely rise of the militant far-left in Sweden.

The Malcolm X Movement and partners are organising a 40years death anniversary event for Paul Robeson.
Robeson was a pioneering Black academic student, American Football player, singer, actor and anti-imperialist and socialist revolutionary. A towering man both phsyical stature and in what he stood for against white supremacy racism, his work in respect towards African liberation and his committment to struggle with and for all those across the world who are exploited and oppressed by global capitalism, colonialism and imperialism. Paul Robeson was a forerunner of the Black radicalism of the 1960s, with Huey Newton and many other leading Black Liberation revolutionaries crediting Robeson as a inspiration. Robeson's work in support of the USSR, the Chinese revolutionaries and then Socialist China, his support for African liberation and the struggle against fascism in Spain as well as his achievements against racism and imperialism in the USA are enormous accomplishments which are relatively little known amongst current generations.

He died in Cuba in January 2008.

Published on May 10, 2014 Preparations are underway for elections in Ukraine's self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk scheduled for May 11. The vote will be held in Donetsk and a number of towns and cities in the neighboring region of Luhansk. Sunday's referendum will ask people if the industrial region of Donetsk should become independent from Ukraine. The region is home to 7.3 million, of Ukraine's total 46 million population. The head of pro-Russian activists in Donetsk, Denis Pushilin says the referendum will be held in 90 percent of the towns in the region and that the turnout is expected to be 60 percent. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier called for the vote to be delayed in order to create better conditions for talks.

An idle youth, of seemingly mediocre talents, his political career and passionate hatreds were formed by the experience of World War I. The rise of fascism in Germany, as elsewhere, must be understood in the context of a postwar climate of resentment and instability. Germany's economic crisis, in particular, led the middle classes to support National Socialism well before any other group. This resentment would find a ready outlet in the form of increasingly persecuted minority populations, above all the Jews. In considering Nazism against the backdrop of a more general wave of extreme rightwing and fascist political sentiment, it is important to note that the policies of the Third Reich were not only known to but also endorsed by the majority of the German population.

DESCRIPTION: Seventy years after World War II and the defeat of fascism, Europe is facing the challenge of a racist far-right on the rise. In times of economic crisis and of harsh attack against workers' and peoples' rights, from France to Ukraine (with the nazis in power) and from Norway to Greece, xenophobic and intolerant parties and groups start having influence on the society, even on poor and excluded popular classes all over Europe. They have begun to play a part in formulating political developments and getting involved in societies, schools, the streets, working-class neighborhoods, as well as national parliaments and state devices, most of all the police.
The rise of the racist far-right did not come out of the blue. This was triggered by European governments' anti-immigration policies, by the rise of islamophobia, by the concept of a Europe-fortress, by the mainstream media's terror-hysteria and xenophobia; it is fueled by the development of various nationalisms, as a misguided answer to capitalist globalization, to the unaccountability of imperialism and the demonization of cultural differences; it is accelerated by the upsurge in state repression, the cancellation of the rights of large parts of the working class and the outbreak of unemployment; it is encouraged by the social fragmentation and identity crisis of large parts of the population, by the backdrop to traditional values (homeland, faith, family etc), the strengthening of sexist and patriarchal patterns, militarist and macho social models and behaviors; it is legitimated by the corruption and unreliability of the political system in power, by the lack of radical anti-systemic political action in the past few decades and by the ideological confusion of large parts of the working class.
In Greece, that is at the heart of the Eurozone-crisis, the third biggest political party in Greece right now, the fascist Golden Dawn, has seen its popularity soar mainly due to the desperation caused by austerity measures. The party is accused of using violence and is held responsible for hundreds of attacks on immigrants in the three years since the debt-stricken country plunged into crisis.
With these thoughts in mind, GCAS Interventions on the day against fascism is holding the first installment of its series of Interventions on the rise of fascism, starting with Greece, the first country where Nazis became members of government. Through this, there will be an exploration on what drives fascism to come to the surface, what are the conditions which nurture it, how we can resist the rising fascism across Europe and the world. There will be other Interventions from GCAS to be held on the rise of fascism in other countries as well, but the case of Greece is an essential part of the creation of an antifascist understanding. The Centre for Labour Studies invites you to the lecture "Liberalism, Fascism, and the Conundrum of Mass Society" by Ishay Landa, organized as part of this years programme - dedicated to the theory of the capitalist state:
In this talk I will re-visit the standard notion of fascism as “mass politics” or even “mass hysteria.” Defended through the decades by countless scholars and observers from different disciplines and perspectives, this approach draws upon and perpetuates the deeply ingrained image of cheering crowds and mass spectacles, in which a dark symbiosis occurs between the demagogue and the mass. This image is taken to be the quintessential expression of fascism. Departing from such an analysis, I will propose to understand interwar European fascism as a comprehensive attempt to defuse the challenge posed by modern mass society to the traditional loci of power and to the upper social strata.
Fascism is better seen a radical negation of the modern phenomenon known as “mass society” and its diverse aspects: social, political, economic, and cultural. Such negation had harnessed and incorporated past ideological developments and impetuses, conservative, elitist and not least, liberal. The latter point, concerning the liberal pedigree of fascism, is of special importance for assessing the nature of the fascist intervention. It allows us to critically confront the liberal analysis of fascism as a fundamentally massified political form, a product of a takeover of the state by the mob. Such a view was (and is) often accompanied by the idea that resisting the immanent danger of fascism means to limit in various ways the political influence of the masses and safely keeping the state under the control of qualified elites. This view of history implies a total break in the passage from the liberal to the fascist state, overlooking the elective affinities between these two political traditions, and the considerable continuity in ultimate aims. The alternative view I will outline suggests, on the contrary, that the best antidote to fascism lies rather in the full fruition of what will be called “the mass project.”
