The Ohio River is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River. At the confluence, the Ohio is even bigger than the Mississippi (Ohio at Cairo: 281,500 cu ft/s (7,960 m3/s); Mississippi at Thebes: 208,200 cu ft/s (5,897 m3/s)) and, thus, is hydrologically the main stream of the whole river system, including the Allegheny River further upstream. It is approximately 981 miles (1,579 km) long and is located in the Eastern United States.
The river had great significance in the history of the Native Americans, as numerous civilizations formed along its valley. In the five centuries prior to European contact, the Mississippian culture built numerous regional chiefdoms and major earthwork mounds in the Ohio Valley, such as Angel Mounds near Evansville, Indiana, as well as in the Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. For thousands of years, Native Americans, like the European explorers and settlers who followed them, used the river as a major transportation and trading route. Its waters connected communities. The Osage, Omaha, Ponca and Kaw lived in the Ohio Valley, but under pressure from the Iroquois to the northeast, migrated west of the Mississippi River to Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma in the 1600s.
The name "Ohio" originated from Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river". The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree) and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes".

Scouting for Big Catfish on the Ohio River
In this video you will spend the day with me scouting the Ohio river for big catfish. I look in certain areas to pin point hot spot for catching catfish such as wing dams or wing dikes which provides several options to fish like current seams, scour holes and eddy's. I also look at mud banks that have deep water and wood cover to find some catfish. The river bed is full of contours that attract catfish but with river conditions these spots can sometimes change.

The Ohio River, which streams westward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cairo, Illinois, is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River in the United States.
The 981-mile (1,579 km) river flows through or along the border of six states, and its drainage basin includes parts of 14 states. Through its largest tributary, the Tennessee River, the basin includes many of the states of the southeastern U.S. It is the source of drinking water for three million people.
It is named in Iroquoian or Seneca: Ohi:yó, lit. "Good River" or Shawnee: Pelewathiipi and Spelewathiipi. The river had great significance in the history of the Native Americans, as numerous civilizations formed along its valley. For thousands of years, Native Americans used the river as a major transportation and trading route. Its waters connected communities. In the five centuries before European conquest, the Mississippian culture built numerous regional chiefdoms and major earthwork mounds in the Ohio Valley, such as Angel Mounds near Evansville, Indiana, as well as in the Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. The Osage, Omaha, Ponca and Kaw lived in the Ohio Valley, but under pressure from the Iroquois to the northeast, migrated west of the Mississippi River to Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma in the 1600s.
In 1669, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle led a French expedition to the Ohio River, becoming the first Europeans to see it. After European-American settlement, the river served as a border between present-day Kentucky and Indian Territories. It was a primary transportation route for pioneers during the westward expansion of the early U.S. In his Notes on the State of Virginia published in 1781–82, Thomas Jefferson stated: "The Ohio is the most beautiful river on earth. Its current gentle, waters clear, and bosom smooth and unbroken by rocks and rapids, a single instance only excepted."
During the 19th century, the river was the southern boundary of the Northwest Territory. It is sometimes considered as the western extension of the Mason–Dixon Line that divided Pennsylvania from Maryland, and thus part of the border between free and slave territory, and between the Northern and Southern United States or Upper South. Where the river was narrow, it was the way to freedom for thousands of slaves escaping to the North, many helped by free blacks and whites of the Underground Railroad resistance movement.
The Ohio River is a climatic transition area, as its water runs along the periphery of the humid subtropical and humid continental climate areas. It is inhabited by fauna and flora of both climates. In winter, it regularly freezes over at Pittsburgh but rarely further south toward Cincinnati and Louisville. At Paducah, Kentucky, in the south, near the Ohio’s confluence with the Mississippi, it is ice-free year-round. Paducah was founded there because it is the northernmost ice-free reach of the Ohio...

This clip was taken off Lower River Road. There is usually a hundred yards to the water from here. As you can see , the water is taking everything in its path along with it. I'll update with more footage on the J.KNIGHT Channel. 3/15/15

Scouting for Big Catfish on the Ohio River
Scouting for Big Catfish on the Ohio River
In this video you will spend the day with me scouting the Ohio river for big catfish. I look in certain areas to pin point hot spot for catching catfish such as wing dams or wing dikes which provides several options to fish like current seams, scour holes and eddy's. I also look at mud banks that have deep water and wood cover to find some catfish. The river bed is full of contours that attract catfish but with river conditions these spots can sometimes change.
This video is just a (laid back) Saturday morning spring day of catfishing. Nature is in full bloom, listen close and you will hear the sound of awesome. Times like these don't last long enough but these kind of days are where memories are made. Happy fishing everyone.

Ohio River Action:Fishing for Blue catfish around mussel beds
This was video was shot on the Cannelton pool just 20 miles down river from the McAlpine dam in Louisville KY.
http://monsterrodholders.com/ I was using frozen skip jack cut in small pieces. i was fishing in about 35 foot of water on the deep water flats using both a suspended and dragging methods. Catching catfish on both type of rigs.
In the summer months on rivers such as the Ohio river the deep flats provide a great food source that blue cats love. That food source is mussels.
Find a good mussel bed on the deep water flats and you will not have to go nowhere else the rest of the day as the cats of all sizes will roam these flats in good numbers scavenging through the gravel/sand/mud mixed bottom for these small hard shell morsels.
The bluecats will eat these mussels, absorb their flesh and later either regurgitate or evacuate the shells. It’s not uncommon to have loads of zebra mussel shells that the cats have left me in my live tank after a tournament.

Good film on the development of the Ohio River with locks and dams by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

The Ohio River, which streams westward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cairo, Illinois, is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River in the United States.

(butch walker & chrystina lloree) When I woke up in the morning my lover was gone. I had a voice in my head 20 feet long. Ohio river's where you need to go. That's where they took a jump to save their soul. The banks are sketchy and they're covered in clay. So be careful where you walk and be careful what you say. 'cause the people are listening to everything you do. And they wont think twice about sinking you. This is where we hide. Down on the bottom, down on the bottom. Well the water is kinda zoomy and my head is full of mud. And the skies are always gloomy forming rainy clouds. And the voices get closer with every step you take. Closer to the edge, that's where you'll break. Well your looks a little strange and you look a little red. Were you careful where you walked? And were you careful what you said? Back to the river is where you need to go.
