Gordon Granger
Gordon Granger (November 6, 1821 – January 10, 1876) was a career U.S. army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Chickamauga.
Early life & Mexico
Granger was born in Joy, Wayne County, New York, in 1821. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1845. During the Mexican-American War, he fought in Winfield Scott's army. Between wars, he served on the western frontier.
Civil War service
Granger first saw action in the Civil War at the Union defeat at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, in August 1861 serving as a staff officer to General Nathaniel Lyon. He was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on March 26, 1862, and commanded the Cavalry Division in the Army of the Mississippi during the Battle of New Madrid and the Siege of Corinth. He was promoted to major general of volunteers on September 17, 1862, and took command of the Army of Kentucky. He conducted cavalry operations in central Tennessee before his command was merged into the Army of the Cumberland, becoming the Reserve Corps.

On June 19, 2012, Houston Mayor Annise Parker formally announced the city's investment of $33 million into the historic park.

Juneteenth, a name coming from two words put toghether, June and the suffix, "teenth", as in "Nineteenth" Juneteenth is the celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, June 19th 1865. Two months earlier. The assassination of United States President Abraham Lincoln took place on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, as the American Civil War was drawing to a close. The assassination occurred five days after the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army of the Potomac, near DC & the White House. By the time Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, the South had surrendered to end the Civil War and Lincoln was dead, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. General Granger's regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. There are historical accounts that show some Texas blacks remained in bondage for months after Granger's announcement, but that act effectively ended slavery in America.
Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.
Masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."The reactions to this profound news ranged from pure shock to immediate jubilation. While many lingered to learn of this new employer to employee relationship ,& were asked to stay where they were, many left before these offers were completely off the lips of their former 'masters' -the desire to reach family members in neighboring states drove the some into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma & North.
