An airline hub is an airport that an airline uses as a transfer point to get passengers to their intended destination.[citation needed] It is part of a hub and spoke model, where travelers moving between airports not served by direct flights change planes en route to their destinations.[citation needed] Many hubs of the airlines are also situated at airports in the cities of the respective head offices.[citation needed]
Some airlines may use only a single hub, while other airlines use multiple hubs. Hubs are used for both passenger flights as well as cargo flights.[citation needed]
Many airlines also use focus cities, which function much the same as hubs. Airlines may also use secondary hubs, a non-technical term for large focus cities.[citation needed]
A fortress hub is an airport where a single airline's share of flights is at or above the monopoly standard of 70 percent of flights in and out of the hub. For example, in 2010 US Airways occupied 85 (plus 1 shared with Lufthansa) out of 97 total gates and accounted for approximately 90% of passenger traffic at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Another example is at Detroit (DTW), a Delta Air Lines hub. New entrants, such as Spirit Airlines at Detroit (DTW), AirTran at Atlanta (ATL), and Vanguard at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), allege to have been the target of exclusionary practices by the dominant carrier. Some observers argue that the existence of such hubs can stifle competition; ProAir's battle with Northwest when it briefly flew out of Detroit City Airport is often cited as an example. Northwest was able to out compete the short-lived discount carrier by matching its fares and offering more frequent flights. Although these competitive measures have nothing to do with hub status per se, they are indicative of the measures a hub airline will take to defend its preferred position at a hub airport.

THE WORLD OF TWA TRANS WORLD AIRLINES ROUND THE WORLD TRIP 1970s 72812
Produced by Trans World Airlines in the 1970s, "The World of TWA" was a travelogue series that presented the many glamorous destinations served by the company. Accompanied by a fabulous theme song, the start of this film is a terrific music video that features jets, passengers, baggage, and "plane talk". The film follows (in droning voiceover) a typical American couple as they travel around the world on TWA, starting in London, England, and continuing to Paris, France, Rome and Pisa, Italy, the Holy Land including the Sea of Galilee, Greece, Egypt, India, Thailand and finally Hong Kong.
The film was made by Carl Dudley Productions.

Apart from two heritage aircraft, the only remaining America West branding on aircraft can be found on some seat covers and bulkheads. The merged airline uses America West's "CACTUS" callsign and ICAO code "AWE", but retained the US Airways name. In February 2013, American Airlines and US Airways announced plans to merge, creating the largest airline in the world.

United Airlines Flight 585 was a scheduled passenger flight from the now-decommissioned Stapleton International Airport in Denver to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
On March 3, 1991, the Boeing 737-291 operating the flight, registered N999UA[1] (previously N7356F with Frontier Airlines), carrying 20 passengers plus a flight crew of 5, crashed while on final approach to runway 35 at Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. There were no survivors
USAir Flight 427 was a scheduled flight from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Pittsburgh International Airport, with a final destination of West Palm Beach, Florida. The flight crashed on Thursday, September 8, 1994, killing all 132 on board. The Boeing 737-3B7 flying the route, registered N513AU, and previously registered as N382AU, was approaching runway 28R of Pittsburgh International Airport, located in Findlay Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, which was at the time the largest hub for the airline.
Eastwind Airlines Flight 517 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Trenton-Mercer Airport in Trenton, New Jersey to Richmond International Airport in Richmond, Virginia. On June 9, 1996 the crew of the Boeing 737-200 operating the flight lost rudder control but was able to land successfully. Only one flight attendant suffered minor injuries. No damage occurred to the aircraft as a result of the incident.
The flight crew of the Boeing 737-200, Captain Brian Bishop and First Officer Spencer Griffin, experienced loss of rudder control while on approach to Richmond. The airplane's airspeed was about 250 knots (460 km/h; 290 mph) and it was flying at an altitude of about 4,000 feet (1,200 m) MSL at the time of the incident. The crew experienced unexpected movement of the rudder, causing the airplane to roll to the right. They applied opposite aileron input to keep the plane from rolling over and thirty seconds later the plane righted itself back to leveled flight. As the crew performed the emergency checklist, the plane again rolled over to the right. After another thirty seconds, the plane snapped back to leveled flight. The crew declared an emergency and landed safely in Richmond. The resulting investigation of this incident would help to establish the cause of two earlier accidents involving 737's which had occurred several years prior, United Airlines Flight 585 (March 3, 1991) and USAir Flight 427 (September 8, 1994).
It was later reported that the airplane previously had problems with uncommanded rudder deflections. These reports consisted of "rudder bumps" during departure and a lack of proper trim.[1]

Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major American airline from 1925 until 2001. It was originally formed as Transcontinental & Western Air to operate a transcontinental route from New York City to Los Angeles via St. Louis and Kansas City. Along with American, United, and Eastern, it was one of the "Big Four" domestic airlines in the United States formed by the Spoils Conference of 1930.
Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939, and after World War II led the expansion of the airline to serve Europe, the Middle East and Asia, making TWA a second unofficial flag carrier of the United States after Pan Am. Hughes gave up control in the 1960s, and the new management of TWA acquired Hilton International and Century 21 in an attempt to diversify the company's business. As the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 led to a wave of airline failures, start-ups and takeovers in the United States, TWA was spun off from its holding company in 1984. Carl Icahn acquired control of TWA and took the company private in a leveraged buyout in 1988. TWA became saddled with debt, sold its London routes, underwent Chapter 11 restructuring in 1992 and 1995, and was further stressed by the explosion of TWA Flight 800 in 1996. In 2001, TWA filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks and closed its St. Louis hub in 2003.
TWA was headquartered at one time in Kansas City, Missouri and planned to make Kansas City International Airport its main domestic and international hub, but abandoned this plan in the 1970s. The airline later developed its largest hub at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, becoming the dominant carrier there by acquiring Ozark Air Lines in 1986.[8] Its main trans-Atlantic hub was the TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, an architectural icon designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1962.
