The app delivers you the Latest News from Hong Kong, China, Asia and World plus Business, Lifestyle, Sport, Property and Magazines content including Post Magazine and 48Hours. The app also gives you access to the hottest trending stories from the South China Morning Post. You can filter your news based on Most Viewed, Most Commented or Most Shared and you can also select which type of news you would like to read for example Business news or Hong Kong news. The app also contains our latest Multimedia content including Videos and Photo Galleries (rotate your phone to landscape to access). The also have includes iScoop, which allows you to submit your news stories, photographs and videos at the touch of a button. Its built-in social media functionality means you can tweet us anytime, anywhere. How much does the SCMP Mobile Edition cost?

You can download the iPhone or Android app for free. You can view the index pages, Multimedia content (Video and Photo Galleries) and submit iScoop stories for free. You can also read up to 8 articles per month for free.

The SCMP Mobile Edition like SCMP.com has a metered paywall, this means that you can view a certain number of articles (eight) free every month. What devices does the app work on?

The iPhone application is designed specifically to work on all Apple iPhones 3GS, 4, 4S and 5 as long as your iOS is 5 or above. The Android application has been designed to work on Samsung Galaxy S (OS 2.3.5), S2 (OS 4.0.3), S3 (OS 4.0), S4 (OS 4.0) Samsung Note (OS 2.3)m Samsung Note 2 (OS 4.1), HTC Sensation (OS 2.3.6), HTC The One X (OS 4.0), HTC Desire HD (OS 2.2) and Sony Neo (OS 2.3). ↑ top

How do I get the application onto my phone?

iPhone: On your phone use your account details to log in to the App Store, search for 'South China Morning Post' or ‘SCMP Mobile Edition’, find the app and download it directly to your device. On your computer use your account details to log in to the iTunes store, search for 'South China Morning Post' or ‘SCMP Mobile Edition’, find the app and download the app to iTunes. You can then sync the app with your iPhone.

Android: Use your account details to log in to the App Store, search for 'South China Morning Post' or ‘SCMP Mobile Edition’, find the app and download the app directly to your device. ↑ top

How do I remove the application from my phone?

To remove the app, follow the same procedure that you use for any other iPhone or Android applications. Press and hold the SCMP Mobile Edition icon on your homescreen until it begins to wobble. Press the "X" in the corner of the icon and then tap delete to remove the icon. You can also remove the icon directly via iTunes. If you are using an Android Phone, Navigate to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications (or on devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Settings > Apps), then scroll through the list of apps to find ‘SCMP Mobile Edition’ and tap to uninstall. ↑ top

Do I have to be online to read the content?

Yes, you will need an internet connection in order to use the app so it can pull in the latest news and articles that are trending on the site. ↑ top

I cannot find the content I am looking for?

Most of the content from SCMP.com is available in the SCMP Mobile Edition, but we have streamlined the content to optimise the experience on a mobile device. What is the SCMP Tablet Edition?

The SCMP Tablet Edition is a purpose-built web based application for your iOS or Android tablet and allows users to quickly and easily access the latest news from the South China Morning Post and SCMP.com. ↑ top

How much does the SCMP Tablet Edition cost?

You can install the app for free. Once installed you will be able to access the homepage and other index pages without any charge. The app has a metered paywall, this means that you can view a certain number of articles (eight) free every month. To have unlimited access to the app, you must be a paid subscriber. To become a Digital Subscriber, Digital Premium Subscriber, Print Plus Subscriber or a Corporate Subscriber, visit our subscription packages section↑ top

I have a SCMP Print Plus (Print + Digital) subscription, will this entitle me to free access on the SCMP Tablet Edition?

How do I get the application onto my iPad?

From your iPad: Open your Safari browser and type: http://app.scmp.com. After the app has loaded, tap the 'Share' button in the Safari menu bar, then click 'Add to Home Screen'. This will then install the app.  ↑ top

From your Android Tablet: Open the Google Play app store and search for 'South China Morning Post'. Then click and install the SCMP Tablet Edition.  ↑ top

How do I remove the application from my iPad?

How do I remove the application from my Android Tablet?

To remove the app, follow the same procedure that you use for any other Android applications. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > SCMP Web App and click uninstall. Please note that the uninstallation process may vary slightly on different Android devices. ↑ top

Do I have to be online to read the content?

Yes. Because the updates in real-time pulling the latest news from SCMP.com you need to be online in order to read the content. Once the app has retrieved the latest news, some content will be cached for offline reading. ↑ top

Will the SCMP Tablet Edition have new content every day?

Yes. The SCMP Tablet Edition will updated 7 days-a-week multiple times a day. The app will download new content when it is opened. You can also tap the refresh button to download any new content that may be available. ↑ top

How do I login?

Within the menu bar, there is are three buttons; Content, Settings and Profile. Tap the profile button and login using your SCMP.com account.  ↑ top

How do I navigate through the app?

There are a few ways to navigate your way through the app. You can swipe from right to left to move through the pages of a section, from section to section or from article to article. You can also tap the Content button to open a list of available sections. By tapping on a category you will jump to that section. ↑ top

Can I personalize the app?

Yes. There are a few ways you can personalize the app to ensure the best reading experience for your particular needs. Tap the settings button in the Menu bar. From here you can tap a section to see a list of sub-categories. You can add/remove sub-categories in a section and tap 'Save' to confirm your changes. You can also re-order the sections in the app by tapping and holding a section block and then dragging it to the left or the right. When you’re happy with your order tap the 'Save' button to confirm your changes. Any changes you make in your Settings (to add/remove sub-categories or change ordering) will automatically be reflected in your Content list.

Finally, depending on whether you're left or right handed you can toggle the Menu bar from left to right. ↑ top

Can I share articles from the SCMP Tablet Edition?

Yes. You can share articles within the app on both Facebook and Twitter. You can also email a link to an article to a friend.  ↑ top

Can I comment on articles within the SCMP Tablet Edition?

Yes. You if you have an SCMP.com account or you are a Registered User you can comment on articles which have comments enabled.  ↑ top

Can I change the font size within the app?

Yes. Within articles you can increase/decrease the font size. On the left hand side of the article there is a font increase/decrease icon, tap this and select the font size that suits you best.  ↑ top

After upgrading my iPad to iOS7 I'm having trouble accessing the app using my Chrome Browser

Please delete your browser cache and try again. To clear your cache using Chrome, open your Chrome browser, tap the menu icon, then tap Settings > Privacy > Clear all. Once removed please go to app.scmp.com to reopen the app.  ↑ top

After upgrading my iPad to iOS7 I'm having trouble accessing the app using my Safari Browser

If you have already added the app to your homescreen, please delete this first then clear your browser cache and try again. To delete the app, press and hold the SCMP icon on your homescreen until it begins to wobble. Press the "X" in the corner of the icon and then tap delete to remove the icon. Then clear your by opening Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data. Once removed please go to app.scmp.com to re-open the app. Then to reinstall the homescreen icon click on the 'Share' button in the Safari menu bar, then click 'Add to Home Screen'. This will then install the app.  ↑ top

The app stalls during loading and I encounter the error message: 'We are unable to update the SCMP Web App'

Please make sure your your browser is not set for 'Private Browsing' as this will prevent the app from launching. To check if Private browsing has been enabled on an iPad:

  • iOS5, iOS6: Open Settings > Safari and make sure 'Private Browsing' is set to 'OFF'.
  • iOS7:Open Safari, close all tabs by clicking on the small 'x' in the top left hand corner of your screen, you should then see a 'Private' button in the bottom left hand corner of the app, if this is enabled it will be highlighted, please tap to disable.

I am unable to load the app, Private Browsing is disabled and I encounter the error message: 'We are unable to update the SCMP Web App'

If you see this message and rebooting your device does not resolve your issue, please follow these steps to remove the app and reinstall. If you have already added the app to your homescreen, please delete this first then clear your browser cache and try again. To delete the app, press and hold the SCMP icon on your homescreen until it begins to wobble. Press the "X" in the corner of the icon and then tap delete to remove the icon. Then clear your by opening Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data. Once removed please go to app.scmp.com to re-open the app. Then to reinstall the homescreen icon click on the 'Share' button in the Safari menu bar, then click 'Add to Home Screen'. When I install the app I'm asked if I want to 'increase the database size'. What does this mean?

When you first open or install the app, we may need to ask for a little extra space than a normal website would need in order to allow the SCMP Tablet Edition app to function properly and to facilitate offline reading. By agreeing to the message, your device will allocate a little additional space for the app to function properly.  ↑ top

What is the South China Morning Post ePaper Edition?

The South China Morning Post ePaper Edition is a replica of the South China Morning Post containing the same content as that which appears in the print edition. ↑ top

How much does the ePaper edition cost?

In order to access ePaper edition you must have a Digital Premium Subscription. You can find out more about this subscription at: https://www.scmp.com/subscribe. Only overseas subscribers are eligible to subscribe. For HK subscribers, ePaper edition is only available with daily packages (Mon-Sun; Mon-Fri) of Print Plus subscription.  ↑ top

If you have a SCMP Digital Premium subscription you are entitled to access the SCMP ePaper edition. Using your account details you can login to the ePaper edition and access all content. ↑ top

Do I have to be online to read the content?

No. You can choose to read the edition online or you can download a copy as a PDF to read offline. When you download a copy your details will be watermarked onto the issue.  ↑ top

Will I be able to access old issues of the ePaper edition?

How do I register/subscribe?

To subscribe to scmp.com, please visit our SCMP Subscription Packages page and choose a package that suits your interests. First-time subscribers will be requested to create a unique username and password, and provide general profile information. We suggest you record these for future reference. Previous scmp.com registered users who opt to subscribe may have to update their information and additional services preferences.

To subscribe:

  • Select one of the subscription offers in " Subscription Packages" and complete the payment details before submitting the form.
  • Should any of the required information be missing or incorrect upon submission, the Subscription Form will load again, indicating the missing/incorrect field(s).
  • A Check Out page, with the summary of your purchase, will be presented. Please note that upon accepting this Check Out page, your credit card will be charged with the corresponding amount. This action will be confirmed with a Thank You/Confirmation page, and allow you to choose your preference of e-newsletters.

Should you opt for our "All-In-One" subscription package of the South China Morning Post print edition and scmp.com, you will need to provide your delivery information before reaching the Check Out page. ↑ top

When is my subscription with scmp.com activated?

Payments by cheque will be processed offline. Therefore please allow three working days for payment to be processed and your account to be activated. Users paying with Visa, MasterCard or American Express will have immediate access to their scmp.com account. ↑ top

Because we need to provide you a unique username and password, therefore you will need to create an online account only if you are a first-time visitor to scmp.com, or have not yet completed the Online Registration Form. Login and Password

I have forgotten my password and/or username. What should I do?

There is no need to worry. Submit the e-mail address you registered with using our “Forgot password” form. You will shortly receive an e-mail from us with a link to reset your password. We suggest taking note of your password and username for future reference. Alternatively you can also send us an e-mail to digitalsupport@scmp.com, or contact our Customer Relationship team at (852) 2680 8822, Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat, Sun & Public Holidays 7am-3pm to provide us with your information. I have registered, and I know my login and password. But when I log in, my password is not accepted. What is wrong?

We suspect your browser is unable or has not been activated to accept cookies. If you are using the office computer, we suggest you contact your IT administrator. If you are using your home computer, you can check or adjust your browser preferences as instructed below.

For Internet Explorer:

From the menu bar, click on "Tools"; and select "Internet Options". Click on "Privacy" tab (the third tab). then click on "Advanced" button. In the pop-up, cehck the boxes for "Override automatic cookie handling" "Accept Third-party cookies", and "Always allow session cookies". 

For Firefox:

From the menu bar, click on "Tools" and select "Options". Click on "Privacy" and check "Accept cookies from sites", and click "OK". Your browser will now be able to accept cookies.

For Chrome:

Click the “Tools” menu and select “Options”. Click the “Under the Hood” tab and then “Content settings” which is under the “Privacy” section. Select “Allow local data to be set”. Your browser will now be able to accept cookies. ↑ top

Do I have to log in every time I visit scmp.com?

Yes, for security reasons as some members of our subscriber community prefer to access their accounts across many different computers at different times. By requiring you to log in every time you access scmp.com, we are ensuring your information remains private. ↑ top

How do I access my scmp.com account from different computers?

Accessing scmp.com from different computers will require you to log in, provide your username and password at the start of every visit. Please remember to close your browser or log out after your session, to ensure that others are unable to access your account. ↑ top

If I log on to scmp.com on different computers, how do I keep others from using my access?

To prevent others from using your access to scmp.com, you need to log out after your visit. To do this, please use the “Logout” button on the navigation bar. Clicking this button will result in a complete log out of scmp.com. Alternatively, close your browser. What authentication measures does scmp.com offer for logged on users?

All users must successfully enter their login and password. The logon and password is encrypted with SSL transmission. Incorrect username and/or password, or a failed login, will bring up an error page. ↑ top

I am having problems accessing scmp.com using my Mac. What do you recommend?

Using our Forms

Subscription Form

For unlimited access to scmp.com content you will need to register for a subscription package which will require you to complete the Online Registration Form. This form requests general personal information. Completing the Registration Form involves three easy steps.

Step one: Select your subscription package

Simple choose the duration and the number of supplementary accounts you would like.

Step two: Account Information

You will be required to create a unique username and password. Your unique username needs to be at least 6 characters long. We recommend not using the same name for both username and password. Please note that all password fields ARE CASE SENSITIVE. This means that you can use numbers, small case, and capital letters within your password. (example: pasSWorD2). You can automatically check the availability of your username on registration. 

To check the correct composition of your password, you are required to fill in the confirmation field. We recommend keeping note of your unique username and password, for future reference.

As well as your preferred start date, you’ll be asked for some personal information. Fields indicated with an "*" are required and need to contain the correct information. Should any of the required information be missing or be incorrect upon submission, the Registration Form will load again, indicating the missing field(s).

Lastly, you can choose to receive regular email newsletter updates to keep you up to date with the latest news. You can also register to receive scmp.com promotional e-mails with exclusive offers from scmp.com or from our partners and advertisers. Receiving these e-mails is optional and free-of-charge. 

Step three: Checkout (subscription only)

The final step of the process requires you to submit your preferred payment details. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or Amex online. We will accept cheque payments, if you wish to pay this way please select ‘Cheque’ and a member of our Customer Relationship Team will contact you shortly. 

The Login Page

To enter pages that hold personal data (such as your “My Account” page), or to read more scmp.com content than the metered paywall allows, you will be asked to provide your username and/or password.
