The Guinness Book of World Records has a new listing for oldest pet cat: 26 years and 15 days.
Since kittenhood, Corduroy has lived with owner Ashley Reed Okura, who was only seven years old when the cat entered her life, Guinness officials said.
“The secret has been allowing him to be a cat – hunting and getting plenty of love,” Reed Okura said in a statement.
Aside from chasing mice, the cat also likes to eat cheddar cheese, according to Guinness officials.

I’ve been reading David Halberstam’s “The Fifties” and listening to Haynes Johnson’s “The Age of Anxiety”. Both have long, detailed histories of the rise and fall of Joe McCarthy.
I’m struck by how much McCarthy and Trump are alike. Both are really “all about ME”. Their hobbyhorses, communists for McCarthy and illegal Mexican rapists for Trump, are just ways of getting attention, especially from the press. No covert dog whistles for them, they just came right out and said it, because they knew it would get them the attention they covet.
Fortunately, McCarthy never had the money or back room Republican support to run for President. On the other hand, billionaire Trump has his own money, and as long as he keeps the Tea Party base, is happy to crush established Republican politicians who get in his way.

Somewhere in cyberland, I recently saw an article that the rise of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump reflect the fact that a large part of the population recognizes that the wheels have come off our society and its political processes. This should not come as a surprise to anyone paying attention to the faltering of America and the world in general. Both Bernie and Donald are essentially populists – they just disagree about causes and cures.
One type of populism is based on recognition of one’s humanity and the humanity of others, a brotherhood-of-Man feeling. The other type is based on recognizing only one’s own self and group. For one, power means the ability to benefit everyone. Fo the other, it means the ability to benefit one’s self. One type founded the utopian communities in the 1800s; suffered and died for other peoples’ rights, safety and quality of life; union organizers, civil rights supporters, etc. And National Socialism was a populist movement of the second type.
