“The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past” is the adaptation of the Super Nintendo game by the creator of “Cyborg 009”, Shotaro Ishinomori. Link is an ordinary villager, but when his uncle is kill at the hands of the sorcerer Agahim; Link is determined to avenge him. He is entrusted with the mission to save Zelda. His quest will take him to the Dark World, where you’ll turn into a best if you let your negative emotions rule your heart. Can he rescue Princess Zelda and defeat Agahim and Ganon?
The story is a justifiable loose adaptation of the video game, because a more faithful one would have put the audience to sleep due to its repetitive nature. It’s relatively light hearted compared to Ishinomori’s other works, since he’s adapting somebody else’s story. The artwork is reminiscent of his early manga, being more cartoony and goofy. The most striking aspect is that Roam looks exactly like Jet Link, A.K.A. Cyborg 002. It’s a shame that Ishinomori killed him off near the end of the story. Roam would’ve made for a pretty interesting canon immigrant to the “Legend of Zelda” games. Some readers might be put off by Link’s personality in this story. But he does mature during his journey, to his credit. It’s amazing that Viz doesn’t print out English versions of the rest of Shotaro Ishinomori’s work. It deserves a lot more exposure and love in North America. Honolulu Nintendo fans should at least give this manga a look.
