Phillips Hughes, a 26-year-old cricket player who was considered a rising star, died on Thursday despite extensive surgery to save his life.
The Australian cricketer was hit by a cricket ball, which can go as fast as 90 miles per hour, in the side of the neck at the Sydney Cricket Ground during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.
Hughes fell into a coma after the ball severed his vertebral artery, one of the main arteries leading to the brain, according to Australian team doctor Peter Brukner.
The rare condition known as vertebral artery dissection leads to subarachnoid brain haemorrhage.
Surgeons removed part of Hughes’ skull to relieve pressure and give more room for his swollen brain. However, Hughes never regained consciousness and died in a Sydney hospital on Thursday.
Even though Hughes wore a helmet, the fast-flying cricket ball hit the base of his skull behind the ear just below his helmet.
Brukner said only 100 cases of vertebral artery dissection have ever been reported, and only one of them was related to cricket.

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players each on a field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings.
The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the ball with his bat away from the fielders so he can run to the other end of the pitch (which is counted as one run) without getting run out (the event in which the fielder throws the ball directly onto wickets or to a player who is near to wickets so he can dislodge them from the ground before the batsman or the non-striker has reached the crease). Each batsman (the other is called non-striker) continues batting until he is out. The batting team continues batting until ten batsmen are out or specified number of overs (6 countable balls bowled is 1 over) have been bowled, at which point the teams switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.
In professional cricket the length of a game ranges from 20 overs of six bowling deliveries per side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.[1]
Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed to be the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international match was held. ICC, the game's governing body, has 10 full members.[2] The game is most popular in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies and Southern Africa.

Australian Test batsman Adam Voges has been helped from the field after being hit on the head while batting in Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania at the Waca in Perth. Shortly after 4pm on Thursday the Western Australian Cricket Association confirmed via Twitter that Voges had been concussed and would take no further part in the game, but was OK. “Voges has been diagnosed with concussion,” the team said via the official Waca Twitter account. “He is OK, naturally a bit groggy. Being monitored by medicos. Ruled out of rest of game.”

Phillip Joel Hughes (30 November 1988 – 27 November 2014) was an Australian Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricketer who played domestic cricket for South Australia and Worcestershire. He was a left-handed opening batsman who played for two seasons with New South Wales before making his Test debut in 2009 at the age of 20.[2]
During the 2009 Ashes series in England, he was dropped from the team due to perceived weakness against the short ball, and replaced by Shane Watson.[3] He was selected to play against Pakistan in January 2010, and against New Zealand in March 2010, when he made 86 not out in a second-innings run-chase.[4]
In the 2010/11 Ashes series, Hughes was initially omitted from a 17-man Test squad but was selected in the third Test in Perth following an injury to Simon Katich.[ Hughes performed relatively poorly in the series but was retained for Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in August/September 2011 following some good end of season form in 2010/11 for New South Wales. Hughes scored 126 in the third and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka and scored 88 in the subsequent Australian tour of South Africa.[4] However, in the New Zealand Tour of Australia in 2011–12, Hughes was caught Guptill, bowled Martin four successive times and he was dropped in favour of Ed Cowan.[8]
After his axing, Hughes opted to skip the Big Bash League to work on his technique. Hughes signed a contract with Worcestershire and enjoyed a fruitful season primarily at No.3 in the order averaging 35 in first class cricket, 100 in T20 cricket, and 83 in ODI cricket.[9] Hughes backed up his strong season for Worcestershire with fine form for South Australia after moving states from New South Wales. John Inverarity, then chairman of the national selection panel of cricket Australia, noted that Hughes was considered an important part of Australia's future.[10]
Hughes was rewarded for good form in 2012 by being selected, first in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour of Australia in 2012–13, then in the Australian ODI squad for the first two ODIs in the same tour. On 11 January 2013, Hughes became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban, 2009 against South Africa.
On 25 November 2014, Hughes was knocked unconscious by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), causing vertebral artery dissection that led to a brain hemorrhage. The Australian team doctor Peter Brukner noted that only 100 such cases had ever been reported, of which "only one case reported as a result of a cricket ball".[11] He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he underwent surgery, was placed into an induced coma and was in intensive care in a critical condition.[12] He died on 27 November 2014, having failed to regain consciousness.[

Adam Voges
Adam Charles Voges (/ˈvoʊdʒᵻz/, born 4 October 1979) is an Australian cricketer who has played for the Australian national team at Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) level, and is the current captain of Western Australia and Perth Scorchers in domestic cricket. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in June 2015.
From Perth, Western Australia, Voges excelled at cricket from an early age, attending the Western Australian Institute of Sport and playing for the Australian under-19 team. He made his first-class debut for Western Australia in the 2002–03 Sheffield Shield, and had established himself in the side by the middle of the decade, playing as a middle-order batsman and part-time left-arm orthodox bowler. Voges debuted for Australia during the 2006–07 Chappell–Hadlee Trophy, and played irregularly at both ODI and T20I level throughout the remainder of the decade, also appearing occasionally for Australia A. He was made vice-captain of Western Australia for the 2007–08 season.

Sheffield Shield
The Sheffield Shield is the domestic first-class cricket competition of Australia. The tournament is contested between teams from the six states of Australia. Prior to the Shield being established, a number of intercolonial matches were played. The Shield, donated by Lord Sheffield, was first contested during the 1892–93 season, between New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. Queensland was admitted for the 1926–27 season, Western Australia for the 1947–48 season and Tasmania for the 1977–78 season.
The competition is contested in a double-round robin format, with each team playing every other team in two home-and-away matches. Points are awarded based on wins, losses, draws and ties, with the top two teams playing a final at the end of the season. Regular matches last for four days; the final lasts for five days. New South Wales have won the most titles, with 45 overall.
History
In 1891–92 the Earl of Sheffield was in Australia as the promoter of the English team led by W. G. Grace. The tour included three Tests played in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

The West Indies is a region of the Caribbean Basin and North Atlantic Ocean that includes the many islands and island nations of the Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago.

In 1916, Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to the United States for US $25 million in gold, as per the Treaty of the Danish West Indies. The Danish West Indies became an insular area of the US, called the United States Virgin Islands.
Between 1958 and 1962, the United Kingdom reorganised all their West Indies island territories (except the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas) into the West Indies Federation. They hoped that the Federation would coalesce into a single, independent nation. However, the Federation had limited powers, numerous practical problems, and a lack of popular support; consequently, it was dissolved by the British in 1963, with nine provinces becoming independent sovereign states and four becoming British Overseas Territories.

The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.[1] Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed to be the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international match was held. ICC, the game's governing body, has 10 full members.[2] The game is most popular in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies and Southern Africa. -

Shortly after 4pm on Thursday the Western Australian Cricket Association confirmed via Twitter that Voges had been concussed and would take no further part in the game, but was OK. “Voges has been diagnosed with concussion,” the team said via the official Waca Twitter account. “He is OK, naturally a bit groggy. Hughes scored 126 in the third and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka and scored 88 in the subsequent Australian tour of South Africa.[4] However, in the New Zealand Tour of Australia in 2011–12, Hughes was caught Guptill, bowled Martin four successive times and he was dropped in favour of Ed Cowan.[8] After his axing, Hughes opted to skip the Big Bash League to work on his technique. Hughes signed a contract with Worcestershire and enjoyed a fruitful season primarily at No.3 in the order averaging 35 in first class cricket, 100 in T20 cricket, and 83 in ODI cricket.[9] Hughes backed up his strong season for Worcestershire with fine form for South Australia after moving states from New South Wales. John Inverarity, then chairman of the national selection panel of cricket Australia, noted that Hughes was considered an important part of Australia's future.[10] Hughes was rewarded for good form in 2012 by being selected, first in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour of Australia in 2012–13, then in the Australian ODI squad for the first two ODIs in the same tour. On 11 January 2013, Hughes became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban, 2009 against South Africa. On 25 November 2014, Hughes was knocked unconscious by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), causing vertebral artery dissection that led to a brain hemorrhage. Phillip Joel Hughes (30 November 1988 – 27 November 2014) was an Australian Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricketer who played domestic cricket for South Australia and Worcestershire. He was a left-handed opening batsman who played for two seasons with New South Wales before making his Test debut in 2009 at the age of 20.[2]
During the 2009 Ashes series in England, he was dropped from the team due to perceived weakness against the short ball, and replaced by Shane Watson.[3] He was selected to play against Pakistan in January 2010, and against New Zealand in March 2010, when he made 86 not out in a second-innings run-chase.[4]
In the 2010/11 Ashes series, Hughes was initially omitted from a 17-man Test squad but was selected in the third Test in Perth following an injury to Simon Katich.[ Hughes performed relatively poorly in the series but was retained for Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in August/September 2011 following some good end of season form in 2010/11 for New South Wales. Hughes scored 126 in the third and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka and scored 88 in the subsequent Australian tour of South Africa.[4] However, in the New Zealand Tour of Australia in 2011–12, Hughes was caught Guptill, bowled Martin four successive times and he was dropped in favour of Ed Cowan.[8]
After his axing, Hughes opted to skip the Big Bash League to work on his technique. Hughes signed a contract with Worcestershire and enjoyed a fruitful season primarily at No.3 in the order averaging 35 in first class cricket, 100 in T20 cricket, and 83 in ODI cricket.[9] Hughes backed up his strong season for Worcestershire with fine form for South Australia after moving states from New South Wales. John Inverarity, then chairman of the national selection panel of cricket Australia, noted that Hughes was considered an important part of Australia's future.[10]
Hughes was rewarded for good form in 2012 by being selected, first in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour of Australia in 2012–13, then in the Australian ODI squad for the first two ODIs in the same tour. On 11 January 2013, Hughes became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban, 2009 against South Africa.
On 25 November 2014, Hughes was knocked unconscious by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), causing vertebral artery dissection that led to a brain hemorrhage. The Australian team doctor Peter Brukner noted that only 100 such cases had ever been reported, of which "only one case reported as a result of a cricket ball".[11] He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he underwent surgery, was placed into an induced coma and was in intensive care in a critical condition.[12] He died on 27 November 2014, having failed to regain consciousness.[

Phillips Hughes, a 26-year-old cricket player who was considered a rising star, died on Thursday despite extensive surgery to save his life.
The Australian cricketer was hit by a cricket ball, which can go as fast as 90 miles per hour, in the side of the neck at the Sydney Cricket Ground during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.
Hughes fell into a coma after the ball severed his vertebral artery, one of the main arteries leading to the brain, according to Australian team doctor Peter Brukner.
The rare condition known as vertebral artery dissection leads to subarachnoid brain haemorrhage.
Surgeons removed part of Hughes’ skull to relieve pressure and give more room for his swollen brain. However, Hughes never regained consciousness and died in a Sydney hospital on Thursday.
Even though Hughes wore a helmet, the fast-flying cricket ball hit the base of his skull behind the ear just below his helmet.
Brukner said only 100 cases of vertebral artery dissection have ever been reported, and only one of them was related to cricket.

Cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed to be the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international match was held. ICC, the game's governing body, has 10 full members.[2] The game is most popular in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West Indies and Southern Africa.

Phillip Joel Hughes (30 November 1988 – 27 November 2014) was an Australian Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricketer who played domestic cricket for South Australia and Worcestershire. He was a left-handed opening batsman who played for two seasons with New South Wales before making his Test debut in 2009 at the age of 20.[2]
During the 2009 Ashes series in England, he was dropped from the team due to perceived weakness against the short ball, and replaced by Shane Watson.[3] He was selected to play against Pakistan in January 2010, and against New Zealand in March 2010, when he made 86 not out in a second-innings run-chase.[4]
In the 2010/11 Ashes series, Hughes was initially omitted from a 17-man Test squad but was selected in the third Test in Perth following an injury to Simon Katich.[ Hughes performed relatively poorly in the series but was retained for Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in August/September 2011 following some good end of season form in 2010/11 for New South Wales. Hughes scored 126 in the third and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka and scored 88 in the subsequent Australian tour of South Africa.[4] However, in the New Zealand Tour of Australia in 2011–12, Hughes was caught Guptill, bowled Martin four successive times and he was dropped in favour of Ed Cowan.[8]
After his axing, Hughes opted to skip the Big Bash League to work on his technique. Hughes signed a contract with Worcestershire and enjoyed a fruitful season primarily at No.3 in the order averaging 35 in first class cricket, 100 in T20 cricket, and 83 in ODI cricket.[9] Hughes backed up his strong season for Worcestershire with fine form for South Australia after moving states from New South Wales. John Inverarity, then chairman of the national selection panel of cricket Australia, noted that Hughes was considered an important part of Australia's future.[10]
Hughes was rewarded for good form in 2012 by being selected, first in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour of Australia in 2012–13, then in the Australian ODI squad for the first two ODIs in the same tour. On 11 January 2013, Hughes became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban, 2009 against South Africa.
On 25 November 2014, Hughes was knocked unconscious by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), causing vertebral artery dissection that led to a brain hemorrhage. The Australian team doctor Peter Brukner noted that only 100 such cases had ever been reported, of which "only one case reported as a result of a cricket ball".[11] He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he underwent surgery, was placed into an induced coma and was in intensive care in a critical condition.[12] He died on 27 November 2014, having failed to regain consciousness.[

Hughes was rewarded for good form in 2012 by being selected, first in Australia's Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour of Australia in 2012–13, then in the Australian ODI squad for the first two ODIs in the same tour. On 11 January 2013, Hughes became the first Australian batsman in the history of ODI cricket to score a century on debut, a feat which he achieved against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. Hughes was also the youngest cricketer ever to score back-to-back centuries in a test match, a feat which he achieved in Durban, 2009 against South Africa.
On 25 November 2014, Hughes was knocked unconscious by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), causing vertebral artery dissection that led to a brain hemorrhage. The Australian team doctor Peter Brukner noted that only 100 such cases had ever been reported, of which "only one case reported as a result of a cricket ball".[11] He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he underwent surgery, was placed into an induced coma and was in intensive care in a critical condition.[12] He died on 27 November 2014, having failed to regain consciousness.[

AFTERBUZZ TV -- Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D edition, is a weekly "after show" for fans of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. In this episode hosts Zach Wilson, Jesse Klein, and Joyce Ajouri discuss episodes 21 and 22 of season 3! Afterwards they discuss the latest MCU film: Captain America: Civil War!
ABOUT AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.:
Based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D. and developed by Joss Whedon, Agent Phil Coulson puts together a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to handle strange new cases.
The first season sees S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson putting together a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to handle strange new cases. They investigate Project Centipede and its leader, "The Clairvoyant", eventually uncovering that the organization is backed by Hydra, which has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. In the second season, following the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D., now-Director Coulson and his team look to restore trust from the government and public while dealing with Hydra, a faction of anti-superhuman S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and the newly revealed Inhumans (who possess special abilities). During the third season, Coulson begins a secret mission to assemble the Secret Warriors, a team of Inhumans, as Hydra restores its ancient Inhuman leader Hive to power.
