The city grew around São Jorge da Mina Castle, built by the PortugueseDiogo de Azambuja in 1482 on the site of a town or village called Amankwakurom or Amankwa. It was Portugal's West African headquarters for trade and exploitation of African wealth. The original Portuguese interest was gold but this later expanded to include tens of thousands of slaves channeled through the trading post of Elmina. The location of Elmina made it a significant site for reprovisioning ships headed south towards the Cape of Good Hope on their way to India. The Dutch West India Companycaptured it in 1637; in subsequent centuries it was mostly used for the slave trade. The British attacked the city in 1782, but it remained in Dutch hands until 1872, when the Dutch Gold Coast was sold to the British.

Ghana Travel
Ghana Travel - Ghana is a very friendly country, ideal for first time travellers to Africa, the people are generally very helpful and welcoming. While their laidback attitude and lack of organized Travelist sights/trips can be a little annoying to begin with, before you have been there for very long you realize that it is one of the delights of this country.
There is archaeological evidence which shows that humans have lived in what is present day Ghana from about 1500 BC. Oral tradition has it that many of Ghanas current ethnic groups such as the multi-ethnic Akan, the Ga and the Ewe arrived around the 13th Century AD.

GangStarrGirl.com founder Starrene Rhett Rocque got to explore Ghana for two weeks last August for AFKTravel.com. Check out some clips from her life changing experience.
Tripoli (Lebanese Arabic: طرابلس Ṭrāblos or Ṭrēblos, locally Ṭrōbles, Standard Arabic: Ṭarābulus; Greek: Τρίπολις Tripolis) is the second-largest city in Lebanon, located north of Batroun and Cape Lithoprosopon. Tripoli is the capital of the North Governorate and a qada of the same name. The city is located 85 km north of the capital Beirut and can be described as the Eastern-most port of Lebanon.
In ancient times, it was the center of a Phoenician confederation which included Tyre, Sidon and Arados, hence the name Tripoli, from the Greek meaning "triple city". Later, it was controlled successively by the Assyrian Empire, Persian Empire, Roman Empire, the Caliphate, the Seljuk Empire, Crusader States, the Mamluks, and the Ottoman Empire. The Crusaders established the County of Tripoli there in the twelfth century.
Today it is the second-largest city and second-largest port in Lebanon, with approximately 500,000 inhabitants, mainly Sunnis, along with smaller communities of Alawites and Christians. The city borders the city of El Mina which is the port outlet of Tripoli district. The two cities are geographically conjoined to form the Greater Tripoli.
Tripoli, auch Tripolis (arabisch: طرابلس, DMG Ṭarābulus bzw.

Globe Trekker Special - The Transatlantic Slave Trade
In this Globe Trekker Special - The Transatlantic Slave Trade - Zoe Palmer, Ian Wright, Justine Shapiro, and Megan McCormick, travel throughout Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and North and South America, discovering the terrible truth about this shameful episode of history, which saw 12 million slaves taken out of Africa, and 2 million killed.
All along the West African coast, from the 15th century onwards, dozens of European forts were built to house captured slaves, before they were shipped across the Atlantic to the Americas. Justine Shapiro is at Ouidah in Benin, Megan McCormick travels to Elmina in Ghana, whilst Zoe Palmer visits Goree Island in Senegal, as well as the Cape Verde islands just off the African coast.
The conditions in which the slaves were held in these forts were shocking, but even worse awaited them on board the ships that took an average of eight weeks to sail from Africa to the New World. All told, around 2 million slaves are estimated to have died on board the ships.
For those Africans who did survive the voyage, life in the Americas was no better. We visit sugar and cotton plantations formerly worked by slaves in the Caribbean, and the United States -- Ian Wright travels to Jamaica and the Turks & Caicos Islands, Zoe Palmer visits St. Lucia and Guadeloupe, whilst Megan McCormick and Justine Shapiro are at former slave plantations in the United States. The average life expectancy for enslaved Africans on plantations was a mere 7 years. Plantation owners did their sums and calculated that rather than looking after the slaves they "owned", it was cheaper to work them to death and then ship across fresh slaves from Africa.
Portugal and Spain were the first slaving nations, and today their cities abound with the fabulous wealth generated thanks to the countries' first explorers and slavers. Other leading European nations, such as France, and the Netherlands, were heavily involved, but by the end of the 18th century, it was Britain that had become the largest slaving nation in the world. Zoe Palmer discovers how many of London's most famous companies and institutions were founded and developed on the back of slavery.
Subsequently, the British MP William Wilberforce led a long campaign in Parliament to abolish the slave trade. Zoe Palmer explores the background to the successful campaign, including the influential contribution of freed slave and best-selling author Olaudah Equiano. Megan McCormick and Justine Shapiro, meanwhile, see how the Civil War in the United States American Civil War re-enactmentchanged the course of history and finally led to the freeing of slaves in the slave-owning south.
Finally, at the world's most dazzling carnivals, we celebrate the cultural legacy of slave culture. Ian Wright is at the world's most famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Justine Shapiro is at the Trinidad carnival, Megan McCormick visits the Notting Hill Carnival in London, whilst Zoe Palmer sambas the night away in Cape Verde, off the coast of Africa. It's a happy modern day ending, sadly not shared by the millions of enslaved Africans who died and were appallingly abused for hundreds of years prior to the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century.

Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana, with an estimated urban population of 2.269 million as of 2012. It is also the capital of the Greater Accra Region and of the Accra Metropolitan District, with which it is coterminous. Accra is furthermore the anchor of a larger metropolitan area, the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which is inhabited by about 4 million people, making it the second largest metropolitan conglomeration in Ghana by population, and the eleventh-largest metropolitan area in Africa.
Accra stretches along the Ghanaian Atlantic coast and extends north into Ghana's interior. Originally built around a port, it served as the capital of the British Gold Coast between 1877 and 1957. Once merely a 19th-century suburb of Victoriaborg, Accra has since transitioned into a modern metropolis; the city's architecture reflects this history, ranging from 19th-century architecture buildings to modern skyscrapers and apartment blocks.
Accra serves as the Greater Accra region's economic and administrative hub. It is furthermore a centre of a wide range of nightclubs, restaurants and hotels. Since the early 1990s, a number of new buildings have been built, including the multi-storey French-owned Novotel hotel. The city's National Theatre was built with Chinese assistance. In 2010, the GaWC designated Accra a Gamma-minus-level world city, indicating a growing level of international influence and connectedness.
The central business district of Accra contains the city's main banks and department stores, and an area known as the Ministries, where Ghana's government administration is concentrated. Economic activities in Accra include the financial and agricultural sectors, Atlantic fishing, and the manufacture of processed food, lumber, plywood, textiles, clothing and chemicals.

I thought I would share with you guys the exciting trip I went on this summer. During the months of June and July in 2014 I was lucky enough to travel to Ghana with an organisation called Dream Africa Care Foundation. During my time there I worked at the The Lord's Arm Foster Care in Accra with incredible children. I was also lucky enough to travel to the Volta region where I visited the Wli waterfalls which are the largest waterfalls in Western Africa and the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. I also travelled to the northern region of Ghana where I stayed in a village called Larabanga. While in the north I worked in a school and visited Mole national Park where I went on both a walking and a jeep safari. I was also there during the World Cup and helped the kids get creative in support of their countries team.

The Travel Industry in Ghana is growing very quickly, and more Travel operators are seeing increased requests for Ghana as a travel destination. Ghana is also rich in gold. This is a stable country with great potential for growth.
I hope you liked Your Ghana Travel!
