Rapid environmental changes typically cause mass extinctions. One estimate is that less than 1% of the species that have existed on Earth are extant.
Since life began on Earth, five major mass extinctions and several minor events have led to large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The Phanerozoic eon (the last 540 million years) marked a rapid growth in biodiversity via the Cambrian explosion—a period during which the majority of multicellularphyla first appeared. The next 400 million years included repeated, massive biodiversity losses classified as mass extinction events. In the Carboniferous, rainforest collapse led to a great loss of plant and animal life. The Permian–Triassic extinction event, 251 million years ago, was the worst; vertebrate recovery took 30 million years. The most recent, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago, and has often attracted more attention than others because it resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.

However, in the Vanni region of Northwest Sri Lanka, bird diversity flourished to extraordinary heights after citizens fled the area during the war. Direct effects on wildlife aside, one thing war definitely does is make conservation, especially international collaboration, very difficult: The last small mammal survey in Sri Lanka was in 1935.

Class X Science Management of Natural Resources Biodiversity Hotspot
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Kingdom of the Lion.
The reserve is only 21 km from east to west, and a maximum of 7 km from north to south, but it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Because of the dense vegetation, wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry-zone national parks such as Yala. There are about 3 elephants and the 15 or so leopards are rarely seen. The most common larger mammal is the endemic purple-faced langur.
An interesting phenomenon is that birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless greater racket-tailed drongo and the noisy orange-billed babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie.
Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic common birdwing butterfly and the inevitable leeches.

The basin is home to the classics of African wildlife – chimpanzees, elephants, gorillas – along with thousands of other less well-known species.

Funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Alliance is an international partnership of scientists, students and policy makers working to build a framework to conserve biodiversity in Central Africa. The partnership spans three continents, and includes researchers from the U.S., Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Germany and the United Kingdom.
To build a conservation framework, they are using genomic tools and environmental modeling to identify areas worth conserving: sweet spots that both maximize the pattern of biodiversity and the processes that produce and maintain it.

Seminar: Interactions between climate change and biological invasions – Franck Courchamp
Abstract: Biological invasion and climate change are increasingly recognized as being among the greatest threats to biodiversity. There is general consensus that the distributions of invasive species are likely to expand with climate change; however this common assumption remains untested. Here we model suitable area globally for two large samples of some of the worst invasive species, both currently and with predicted climate change (in 2080), globally, regionally and within the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots. Our first sample is taxonomically and ecology very large, and serves to provide an overall pattern of relationships between these t

This documentary features the Western Ghats, known locally as the Sahyadri Hills, which are made up of the Malabar Plains and a continuous chain of mountains.
The Western Ghats are a mountain range that runs almost parallel to the western coast of Indian peninsula. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity in the world. It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India. The range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separates the plateau from a narrow coastal plain, called Konkan, along the Arabian Sea. A total of thirty nine properties including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests were designated as world heritage sites - twenty in Kerala, ten in Karnataka, five in Tamil Nadu and four in Maharashtra.
The range starts near the border of Gujarat and Maharashtra, south of the Tapti river, and runs approximately 1,600 km (990 mi) through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala ending at Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of India. These hills cover 160,000 km2 (62,000 sq mi) and form the catchment area for complex riverine drainage systems that drain almost 40% of India. The Western Ghats block southwest monsoon winds from reaching the Deccan Plateau. The average elevation is around 1,200 m (3,900 ft).
The area is one of the world's ten "Hottest biodiversity hotspots" and has over 7,400 species of flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species, 179 amphibian species and 288 freshwater fish species; it is likely that many undiscovered species live in the Western Ghats. At least 325 globally threatened species occur in the Western Ghats.
The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Hills, are well known for their rich and unique assemblage of flora and fauna. Norman Myers included the Western Ghats amongst the 25 biodiversity hot-spots identified in the world.
The Western Ghats extend from the Satpura Range in the north, go south past Goa, through Karnataka and into Kerala and Tamil Nadu end at Kanyakumari embracing Indian ocean. The major hill range starting from the north is the Sahyadhri (the benevolent mountains) range. This range is home to many hill stations like Matheran,Lonavala-Khandala, Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani,Amboli Ghat, Kudremukh and Kodagu. The range is called Sahyadri in northern Maharashtra and Sahya Parvatam in Kerala. The Biligiri ranges southeast of Mysore in Karnataka, meet the Shevaroys (Servarayan range) and Tirumala range farther east, linking the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats. In the south the range is known as the Nilagiri malai in Tamil Nadu.
The northern portion of the narrow coastal plain between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea is known as the Konkan Coast or simply Konkan, the central portion is called Kanara and the southern portion is called Malabar region or the Malabar Coast. The foothill region east of the Ghats in Maharashtra is known as Desh, while the eastern foothills of central Karnataka state is known as Malanadu. The Biligirirangan Hills lies at the confluence of the Western and Eastern Ghats. WAPCO region under western Ghats covers twelve administrative districts of Kerala State.

Mathias Geiger, Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, Germany, gave a lecture on "The FREDIE project – different lessons from a large scale DNA barcoding campaign".
Abstract: In my talk I will first give an overview about the aims and structure of the FREDIE project, and will then focus on findings and highlights from the freshwater fish diversity of the Western Palearctic. Special emphasize will be put on the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot, as one of the most important temperate biodiversity areas, with a remarkable diversity of freshwater fishes. Actually, 397 out of 526 species are recognized as endemic. In order to assess their diversity, and to construct a molecular identification system supporting conservation, we constructed a DNA barcode library for 498 Mediterranean freshwater fish species (98% extant species coverage) based on 3171 individuals. The congruence of clusters with morphological species ranged from 45 – 85% of species and was highly dependent on the method used to delineate clusters. Genetic discontinuities suggest the existence of up to 64 candidate species, potentially increasing fish diversity by less than 12%. Shared haplotypes among species highlight the limits of a barcoding approach, although mismatches tended to occur in recent (Pleistocene- or Holocene-evolved) lineages. We found reduced reliability of DNA barcoding to identify species unambiguously in a highly biogeographically structured area, but much greater accuracy when applied at the catchment scale. This scale effect has important implications for barcoding assessments, and our results suggest that fairly simple identification pipelines can be applied in local freshwater fish monitoring. Inventorying and management of large-scale diversity requires higher analytical and conceptual efforts. The barcoding of 98% of freshwater fish species of the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot represents a success story for biodiversity research in the geopolitically complex region. The database will enable the recognition of conservation units within the Hotspot and will strongly support the ongoing exploration of the global freshwater fish diversity.

Our first sample is taxonomically and ecology very large, and serves to provide an overall pattern of relationships between these two global drivers: all the species of the infamous “100 of the world’s worst alien invasive species” IUCN list. Our second sample is focused on 15 species of one single family with homogeneous ecological traits, ants, and serves to show that our findings hold even within a relatively small set of similar species. Using ensemble forecasts from species distribution models to project future suitable areas of invasive species, we show that climate change will likely cause drastic shifts of potential range of invasive species. Looking at potential spatial aggregation of invasive species, we also identify several future hotspots of invasion. Surprisingly, we also show that, in both cases, the potential distribution of only some species is predicted to increase with climate change, with many others declining. Similarly, some regions will gain invasive species, but others will lose some, and the changes will not simply amount to a shift poleward. Contrarily to general expectations, climate change and biological invasions will not systematically act synergistically. However, alien invasions will likely remain a major global problem, especially where invasion hotspots coincide with biodiversity hotspots.

Sri Lanka is home to a wealth of incredible life, one of the world’s 25 Biodiversity Hotspots as defined by the United Nations. Among the mammals, Sri Lanka is home to an endangered population of Asian elephant and over 50 species of bat and three endemic species of small mammals (shrews).
The country has experienced internal difficulties since 1983 when a civil war erupted. The Sri Lankan Civil War ravaged the country’s trees, exacerbating an already stressful situation and leaving less than 20% of its pre-colonial forest left.
The ROM Biodiversity trip to Sri Lanka is one of the country’s first international collaborations, which is both exciting and intimidating, but we are extremely thrilled to invite you along for the (likely bumpy) ride.
Join us for this hangout from the field where we'll talk to ROM scientists on the ground in Sri Lanka!

The picturesque Ameenpur lake system is evolving as an acknowledged eco heritage site. The arrival of tens of colourful species of birds, countless butterflies of distinct hues, snakes and reptiles that thrive here epitomize the rich biodiversity of an urban sphere very much in Hyderabad.
Sadly it is under threat and could transform as a biodiversity hotspot if the degradation of its water and vegetation sources is not checked. Linking the lakes and conserving them is the first firm step forward.
This video is put together by using various photographs from birders and wildlife photo enthusiasts around Hyderabad.
Thanks to Tejdeep Kaur Menon, IPS for her valuable inputs.

Botany Pond is host to a remarkable variety of animals given its tiny size and location in Hull Court-a biodiversity hotspot in the middle of campus. Ducks, four species of turtles, a dozen species of dragonflies and damselflies, and a variety of other animals and plants all live with the rhythm of their lives (and their reproduction) intimately tied to this tiny speck of water and its changes over the seasons. Botany Pond has been part of the educational, social, and contemplative life on campus for the past century. This multimedia presentation celebrates the denizens of Botany Pond and the moments of tranquility, tenderness, and drama that punctuate its days.

Presented by Dr. Debra Ayres
Pine Hill lies near the center of a volcanically-derived gabbro intrusion in the foothills of the Sierras in western El Dorado County containing fire-prone chaparral, oak woodland, and grassland communities. Over 10% (741 plants) of the flora of the entire state of California, including seven rare plant species, occurs within this 30,000 acre gabbro island. Dr. Debra Ayres has been studying the rare plants in this area for over 20 years. She will present new analyses showing that two chaparral communities are present here. Recognition and preservation of both types of chaparral will be necessary to conserve this diverse flora.

With support from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) through its investment in the Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot, the Centre for Forest Studies and Consulting (AlbaForest) is working with four villages to prevent erosion in the catchment of the Drini River, a key biodiversity area that provides multiple services to inhabitants of northern Albania. This involve adapting activities to the local context, including reforestation of 60,000 trees, small anti-erosive infrastructures and improved pasture and grazing management. The pilots developed in the four villages will inform Integrated River Basin Management for the entire catchment.
This projects workshop activity video was transmitted by the "Voice of America TV-Tirana-Albania," following a workshop on August 29, 2014 that was held in Shkodra, Albania, on project objectives and planned activities for critical ecosystems rehabilitation.

The Congo basin is an unruly ribbon of tropical forest, over a million square miles spanning six countries in Central Africa. It is the second-largest contiguous tropical forest in the world. The basin is home to the classics of African wildlife – chimpanzees, elephants, gorillas – along with thousands of other less well-known species.
This wealth of flora and fauna, much of it native to the region, is enough to qualify the Congo basin as a biodiversity hotspot: a biologically rich area threatened by outside forces. In Central Africa, those forces include deforestation, climate change, hunting and more.
The region is “so enriched with life,” says Mary “Katy” Gonder, a Drexel University biologist and one of the lead researchers on the Central African Biodiversity Alliance (CABA). “And that life is precarious right now.”

India is an exotic land of iconic wildlife, secret locations, epic terrains and colourful beauty. From the snow-capped Himalayas and mighty Ganges to the lost world of the north-east.

This video is about a Rapid Biodiversity Assessment Survey (BIORAP) carried out in the upland cloud forests of the Samoan island of Savaii, the largest contiguous area of tropical forest in Polynesia. Savaii lies within the Polynesia-Micronesia Biodiversity Hotspot and includes all the islands of Micronesia, Polynesia and Fiji. The purpose of the BIORAP was to improve the state of knowledge of this important area and to provide a basis for the conservation and management of nationally, regionally and globally important ecosystems, biodiversity and threatened species. A particular focus of the survey was to gain a better understanding of Samoa’s endemic, rare and endangered plants and animals.

The Lembeh strait in the northern part of the Idonesian island of Sulawesi is a unique hotspot of marine biodiversity. Countless amazing creatures thrive in the underwater landscape surrounding Lembeh island. During four years a wildlife filmmaker couple spent many months in the region capturing hundreds of hours of behavior, lots of it never filmed before. Among other unique behavior the filmmakers were able to shoot an Anglerfish swallowing a Lionfish, a scene resembling Godzilla gulping down Dracula. Elegant seahorses, thumb-splitting Mantis shrimp, and deadly mini-octopuses are just some of the remarkable creatures traditional underwater films tend to overlook. As most of the underwater drama is hidden from plain sight only the groundbreaking macro photography in this film can reveal the awe and beauty of life in the Reef of Little Monsters.

Sri Lanka is one of the 25 Biodiversity hot spots of the world. The country has the highest Biodiversity per 10,000 square km in Asia.
Sinharaja world heritage Forest is a unique rain forest on the island which apart from very limited use by local people has been left largely undisturbed.
Fifteen (15) distinct bio regions in an area of 62,500 square km each offering different landscapes and wildlife opportunities - with an ancient civilization contemporary to that of the Greeks and Romans and numerous cultural sites of antiquity, including six world heritage sites - Sri Lanka has an exotic and vibrant resource base of Ecotourism.
Sri Lanka's contains about 24 wildlife reserves, these are home to a wide range of native species such as elephants, leopard, sloth bear, the unique small loris, a verity of deer, the purple faced leaf monkey, the endangered wild boar, porcupines and ant-eaters. Reptiles include vipers and marsh and estuarine crocodiles. Among many amphibians endemic to the country are the Nanophyrys frogs in the hills. Most of the fish are river or marsh dwelling- the trout, introduced by the British are found in the cool streams of the Horton plains.

FishBase is the world's largest encyclopedia of fish, freely available on the net. The Swedish office every year holds an annual public symposium on a current theme related to fish biology, fish systematics and fish ecology. FishBase Symposium 2014 was held in Stockholm, Monday 20th October, in the Main Auditorium of the Swedish Museum of Natural History, and the theme was "Fishes and Genes". Molecular biology is increasingly a vital part of the study and management of fish, and seven invited experts gave talks different facets of Fishes and Genes.
