Alton Towers is a theme park and resort located in Staffordshire, England. It attracts around 2.7 million visitors per year making it the most visited theme park in the United Kingdom. Alton Towers is also the 9th most visited theme park in Europe. It is based north of the village of Alton in Staffordshire (approximately 16 miles (26 km) east of Stoke-on-Trent, and not to be confused with the town of Alton in Hampshire), in the grounds of Alton Towers, a semi-ruined gothic revival country house. The estate was a former seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury.
The resort includes the theme park as well as Alton Towers Hotel, Splash Landings Hotel, Waterpark, Spa, Extraordinary Golf and Conference Centre. It is the flagship attraction of Merlin Entertainments in the United Kingdom. Major attractions at Alton Towers include Nemesis, Oblivion, Air, Rita and Th13teen.
The park's promotional music is In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg.
An Iron Age fort was built on Bunbury Hill (c.1st-century BC) which is now occupied by the Alton Towers estate. In about 700 AD, the Saxon king Ceolred of Mercia built a fortress on the hill. But King Ine of Wessex besieged the site in 716 AD. The ensuing battle, which ended in stalemate, caused such a loss of life the place was called Slain Hollow (which later became the estate's oriental water garden).

Footage has emerged from the seconds immediately after a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers, where screaming passengers can be heard pleading for the ride to stop. In the video, the 16 people on board The Smiler ride are seen rocking backwards and forwards, after the carriage they were travelling in collided with a stationary carriage. A voice in the recording is heard saying how the victims' car had "come round full speed into the back" of the empty carriage on a low section of the track. Video WATCH Smiler Crash At Alton Towers - 2 Carriages Collide 16 People Injured (VIDEO) Alton Towers Roller Coaster Crash: Witnesses Describe Accident as 2 Carriages Collide at Smiler Ride
Sixteen people were riding in one carriage on the attraction when the crash happened just after 2pm, according to West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS).
It is believed the passengers crashed into an empty stationary carriage, with those hurt still stuck on the ride, 25ft in the air, at a 45 degree angle.
The Smiler in numbers
WMAS spokesman Steve Parry said the four most severely injured teenagers included two male and two female casualties, "who suffered serious leg injuries in the incident and are receiving treatment as we speak."
"The other twelve occupants of the ride are not thought to be seriously injured," he said.

Footage has emerged from the seconds immediately after a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers, where screaming passengers can be heard pleading for the ride to stop.
In the video, the 16 people on board The Smiler ride are seen rocking backwards and forwards, after the carriage they were travelling in collided with a stationary carriage.
A voice in the recording is heard saying how the victims' car had "come round full speed into the back" of the empty carriage on a low section of the track.
The two carriages appeared to be locked together in the aftermath of the crash, as the passengers swung from side to side.
Alton Towers staff were quick to evacuate the area following the accident, which left four people with "significant lower limb injuries" - and the amusement park is closed today as an investigation continues.

Tree Top Quest High Ropes Course POV - Alton Towers

After a full safety briefing, the adventure begins as you zipwire and swing from the trees as you navigate your way around the course. A dizzying 8m up in the trees of the Enchanted Forest, the High Ropes consists of 19 obstacles to challenge the thrillseekers who take on the course.
Daredevils will make their way up the spiral staircase to start from the turret of the central tower to then navigate their way across transverse nets, swing tyres, stepping stones and ziplines to complete the challenging course. This video shows the highlights from each of the 17 obstacles and 4 zip wires.
The High Ropes experience lasts around 45-60 minutes but could last longer or shorter depending on how fast you want to complete the course. Anyone participating in the High Ropes course must be at least 1.4m tall and over 11 years.

After a full safety briefing, the adventure begins as you zipwire and swing from the trees as you navigate your way around the course. A dizzying 8m up in the trees of the Enchanted Forest, the High Ropes consists of 19 obstacles to challenge the thrillseekers who take on the course.
Daredevils will make their way up the spiral staircase to start from the turret of the central tower to then navigate their way across transverse nets, swing tyres, stepping stones and ziplines to complete the challenging course. This video shows the highlights from each of the 17 obstacles and 4 zip wires.
The High Ropes experience lasts around 45-60 minutes but could last longer or shorter depending on how fast you want to complete the course. Anyone participating in the High Ropes course must be at least 1.4m tall and over 11 years.

A 17-year-old girl injured in a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers has had her leg amputated, it has emerged. Leah Washington was on the front row of the Smiler ride, which crashed into an empty carriage in front of it. Three other people who were also in the front row sustained serious leg injuries, while a fifth person is being treated for internal injuries. The theme park reopened earlier on Monday, six days after the crash, but the ride remains closed. -

Thousands of people have signed a petition to have Sky News anchor Kay Burley SACKED after her bruising interview with the boss of Alton Towers.
A staggering 35,000 people have so far added their names to a petition that is calling on bosses at Sky News to give Burley the boot over her confrontational interview with Merlin Entertainment chief executive Nick Varney.
On the Change.org page, a statement reads: "Kay Burley should be sacked after the awful way she conducted her interview of Alton Towers CEO Nick Varney.
"This interviewing is an embarrassment to Sky News, she was rude and patronising not giving him chance to explain and when he did get chance to explain she continued to dismiss his comments and further trying to damage the company thinking that she was clever.
"She also tried to get him to give highly confidential private information on the casualties.
"He didn't try to shift responsibility he knew enormously what this event did, shut the park and is fully investigating the incident working with authorities.
"What happened at Alton Towers was awful and it shouldn't have happened but what happened at your Sky studio was awful too and shouldn't of happened, now you need to put this right, act professional like the CEO did, issue an apology and sack Kay Burley."
The Sky News veteran was grilling Mr Varney over the horrific accident that left a 17-year-old girl needing her left leg amputated above the knee.

A 17-year-old girl injured in a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers has had her leg amputated, it has emerged.
Leah Washington was on the front row of the Smiler ride, which crashed into an empty carriage in front of it.
Three other people who were also in the front row sustained serious leg injuries, while a fifth person is being treated for internal injuries.
The theme park reopened earlier on Monday, six days after the crash, but the ride remains closed.

Alton Towers accident: Kay Burley interview anger leads thousands to sign petition to sack her he Sky News grilling has caused fury with more than 1,000 complaints to regulators. Thousands of people have signed a petition to have Sky News anchor Kay Burley SACKED after her bruising interview with the boss of Alton Towers. A staggering 35,000 people have so far added their names to a petition that is calling on bosses at Sky News to give Burley the boot over her confrontational interview with Merlin Entertainment chief executive Nick Varney. On the Change.org page, a statement reads: "Kay Burley should be sacked after the awful way she conducted her interview of Alton Towers CEO Nick Varney. "This interviewing is an embarrassment to Sky News, she was rude and patronising not giving him chance to explain and when he did get chance to explain she continued to dismiss his comments and further trying to damage the company thinking that she was clever. "She also tried to get him to give highly confidential private information on the casualties. "He didn't try to shift responsibility he knew enormously what this event did, shut the park and is fully investigating the incident working with authorities. "What happened at Alton Towers was awful and it shouldn't have happened but what happened at your Sky studio was awful too and shouldn't of happened, now you need to put this right, act professional like the CEO did, issue an apology and sack Kay Burley." The Sky News veteran was grilling Mr Varney over the horrific accident that left a 17-year-old girl needing her left leg amputated above the knee. Two of the four people seriously injured in the Alton Towers rollercoaster crash are a teenage couple from Yorkshire. University of Huddersfield student Joe Pugh, 18, and 17-year-old girlfriend Leah Washington were at the theme park with flatmates when their carriage on The Smiler ride collided with a stationary carriage. Four people including the pair were left with "significant lower limb injuries" - and the amusement park is closed today as an investigation continues. It comes after a video emerged showing the seconds after the accident.
