Machynlleth (pronounced [maˈxənɬɛθ] (
listen); sometimes referred to colloquially as Mach) is a market town in Powys, Wales. It is in the Dyfi Valley at the intersection of the A487 and the A489 roads.
Machynlleth was the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404, and as such claims to be the "ancient capital of Wales". However, it has never held any official recognition as a capital. From 1536 to 1974 it lay in the historic county of Montgomeryshire (Sir Drefaldwyn). It applied for city status in 2000 and 2002, but was unsuccessful. It is the sister town of Belleville, Michigan.
Machynlleth hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1937 and 1981.
There is a long history of human activity in the Machynlleth area. In the late-1990s, radiocarbon dating showed that copper mining was taking place in the Early Bronze Age (ca. 2750 years ago), within a mile of the town centre. But there are legends of a once fertile plain, the Cantre'r Gwaelod, now lost beneath the waves of Cardigan Bay.
The Romans settled in the area to an extent. They built a small Roman fort at Pennal (Cefn Caer) four miles west of Machynlleth, and are reputed to have had two look-out posts above the town at Bryn-y-gog and Wylfa. But one of the earliest written references to Machynlleth is the Royal charter granted in 1291 by Edward I to Owen de la Pole, Lord of Powys. This gave him the right to hold "a market at Machynlleth every Wednesday for ever and two fairs every year". The Wednesday market is still a busy and popular day in Machynlleth 700 years on.

This film is from day 2 of a laning trip in Wales and exclusively covers the Machynlleth Horse Shoe lane driven in both directions. The lane is also commonly known as the bastard lane due to a couple of tricky obstacles along the way. It's certainly one of my all time favorite lanes and a real test of you and your vehicle. I've used a few different tracks for this film. Of my own making there is Sucker Punching. From my fav YouTube artist , TeknoAxe, I've used Cutting Through the Madness and Qelric Dear Wolf. These tracks are all licence free under the creative commons licence. -

We have driven this lane a few times before but it was a bit different on this trip. Firstly, it had tipped it down the night before and although it was nice and clear for the drive, the ground was soaked. Secondly, we had a nice well kept Discovery TD5 with us and that was going to require a fair bit of coaxing to get it through undamaged. In my opinion this is probably one of the greatest lanes left in the UK for sheer variety of terrain, challenges and because of it's length. If you are laning in Wales it's not to be missed. This film is from day 2 of a laning trip in Wales and exclusively covers the Machynlleth Horse Shoe lane driven in both directions. The lane is also commonly known as the bastard lane due to a couple of tricky obstacles along the way.
It's certainly one of my all time favorite lanes and a real test of you and your vehicle.
I've used a few different tracks for this film. Of my own making there is Sucker Punching. From my fav YouTube artist , TeknoAxe, I've used Cutting Through the Madness and Qelric Dear Wolf. These tracks are all licence free under the creative commons licence.

We have driven this lane a few times before but it was a bit different on this trip. Firstly, it had tipped it down the night before and although it was nice and clear for the drive, the ground was soaked. Secondly, we had a nice well kept Discovery TD5 with us and that was going to require a fair bit of coaxing to get it through undamaged.
In my opinion this is probably one of the greatest lanes left in the UK for sheer variety of terrain, challenges and because of it's length.
If you are laning in Wales it's not to be missed.
Embarrassingly, this does also show me having to get my baby brother to drive my own Landy over a section I couldn't! Oh the shame!!!

The landscape is outstanding a good place to walk, bikeriding etc. It is a great place to visit and i hope after this you will agree. The places i went to are Aberystwyth, Tywyn and Machynlleth. I will be going again so look out for my next batch if you enjoyed this one.
