Originally a supporter of Mikhail Gorbachev, Yeltsin emerged under the perestroika reforms as one of Gorbachev's most powerful political opponents. On 29 May 1990 he was elected the chairman of the Russian Supreme Soviet. On 12 June 1991 he was elected by popular vote to the newly created post of President of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (SFSR), at that time one of the 15 constituent republics of the Soviet Union. He won 57% of the vote in a six-candidate contest and became the second democratically elected leader of Russia in history. Upon the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev and the final dissolution of the Soviet Union on 25 December 1991, Yeltsin remained in office as the President of the Russian Federation, the USSR's successor state. Yeltsin was reelected in the 1996 election; in the second round of the election Yeltsin defeated Gennady Zyuganov from the revived Communist Party by a margin of 13%. However, Yeltsin never recovered his early popularity after a series of economic and political crises in Russia in the 1990s.

"I understand that it's hard for everyone, but one cannot give in to emotions... we'll have to draw lessons from the current crisis and now we'll have to work on overcoming it,"
"We will solve this problem."
"We can be proud that this is being done peacefully, without revolutions and coups."
"A man must live like a great brilliant flame and burn as brightly as he can. In the end he burns out. But this is far better than [being] a mean little flame."
"There are numerous bugbears in the profession of a politician. First, ordinary life suffers. Second, there are many temptations to ruin you and those around you. And I suppose third, and this is rarely discussed, people at the top generally have no friends."
"It is especially important to encourage unorthodox thinking when the situation is critical: At such moments every new word and fresh thought is more precious than gold. Indeed, people must not be deprived of the right to think their own thoughts."
"Let's not talk about Communism. Communism was just an idea, just pie in the sky."
"Today is the last day of an era past."
"You can make a throne of bayonets, but you can't sit on it for long."

"I would like to stress here that a lasting peace in the Chechen republic and so-called peace talks with the bandits are not the same thing, and I would ask everyone to make no mistake about that."
"International terrorism is throwing down a challenge, and not just to Russia."
"We, Russia, are prepared to work with others. I am convinced that stability and security in Europe cannot be considered without taking Russia into account."

This documentary is not a historical or journalistic film in the sense that it does not relate the entire career of Boris Yeltsin from start to finish and it does not collect all the points of view. The film rather supports openly the point of view shared by both authors: Alante Alfanderi, a Lithuanian director, who owes in part her freedom to the decisive action of Boris Yeltsin in the independence process of her country; Daniel Leconte who has attentively observed the Russian regime for more than twenty years. The film starts in Sverdlovsk in the 1930s and ends in 1989 when Eltsine won the first democratic elections of post-communist Russia. Through a search of Yeltsin’s background this film discovers the sources of a historical destiny and outlines the keys to an uncommon political behavior. In short, this film looks for an answer to the enigmatic nature of Eltsine. For better or worse, how did Eltsine become the founding father of Russian democracy? Based on the evidence of Boris Yeltsin’s close circle Naïma his wife, Gorbatchev, etc., the film takes us through Eltsine’s career from his native Sverdlovsk to Moscow.

RUSSIA: MIKHAIL GORBACHEV'S RESPONSE TO BORIS YELTSIN'S ILLNESS
Russian/Nat
Boris Yeltsin is incapable of fulfilling his duties and should step down immediately, according to Mikhail Gorbachev.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with APTV, the former Soviet president had
few friendly words for his old political sparring partner.
Boris Yeltsin's opponents are renewing their call for his resignation.
That's after the Kremlin confirmed today that the Russian president has pneumonia.
The 65-year-old president was hospitalised yesterday, two weeks after he returned
to work.
Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev is one of Yeltsin's critics - he says the Russian leader is a sick man and should quit.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Our president is physically unable to work. Politically, he has outlived himself, too. We've had the elections, but, as a matter of fact, still have no president. We just don't have a president!"
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president
Gorbachev said Yeltsin today reminded him of his days in the politburo under the ailing Leonid Brezhnev and other geriatric Soviet leaders.
Yeltsin's speech, gait and inability to address the problems facing Russia bear striking similarities, Gorbachev said, to the old Soviet Kremlin bosses.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"There are many similarities between Brezhnev and Yeltsin: the way they walk the same way , the same difficulty in speaking, the same pretence of working two or three hours a day when actually no real work is done... I took part in just this kind of sham when I was a politburo member under Brezhnev. Such were the rules of the game."
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president
While calling on Yeltsin to resign his office for the good of the country, Gorbachev admitted that he held out little hope that the Russian president would heed his plea.
Gorbachev believes the ailing Russian leader will do everything possible to stay in power.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"Knowing Boris Nikolayevich the way I do, I doubt very much he will make this wise and responsible step of resigning. I've followed his political career since the fall of the Soviet Union, and my conclusion is Yeltsin is not the kind of person to resign. He doesn't have it in him . He will do everything possible to keep the country in political turmoil, will continue to divide and rule and do his utmost to remain in power."
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president
But doctors who've treated the 65-year-old president say otherwise.
The president's heart surgeon says Yeltsin's condition is good and that his current
illness is unrelated to recent heart surgery.
And he isn't alone in his illness.
Moscow health officials estimate that 64-thousand people in the Russian capital have
contracted the flu -- or something like it -- since New Year's Day.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin remains in a Moscow hospital Wednesday, where he is recovering after a quiet night.
The Kremlin is trying to paint an encouraging picture of Yeltsin's health, and stressed that he remains in charge.
In a rare interview, a presidential aide told APTV that the nuclear button is with the Russian leader at the hospital.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin today is still hidden away behind these hospital gates. Doctors say he is fine, but not even Yeltsin's official photographer has been allowed to take a picture of the supposedly active President.
Yeltsin is scheduled to stay under observation by government doctors through the end of the week. While unwilling to provide the media with any pictures to illustrate their words, officials today said the President is back at work.
SOUNDBITE Russian:
"His blood pressure is normal, his electrocardiogram is normal, now he is following the course of recovery prescribed by his doctors, and he is working. He signed a few documents today."
SUPERCAPTION: Sergei Medvedev, Presidential Press Secretary
While Yeltsin's actual status remains a mystery, government handling of the affair is a sharp contrast to the news blackouts imposed on the
illnesses of Soviet leaders in the past.
Today's Russian newspapers commented that such a once earth-shaking event was causing relatively few ripples in the political and financial arenas. A year ago, a hospital visit for Yeltsin would have stunned Moscow - but today the President's health was not on the main agenda at the Russian Duma.
SOUNDBITE Russian:
"The process used to be unjustifiably concentrated in the person of the President. Today the situation has changed - I see this as a positive development.
SUPER CAPTION: Gennadi Burbulis, Russian Deputy, former Presidential Aide
But Yeltsin spokesman Sergei Medvedev is quick to point out that this does not mean the President has become irrelevant. Russia, he said, including its nuclear arsenal, is still very much under Yeltsin's control.
SOUNDBITE:
"As far as the nuclear button which everyone is asking about - the nuclear button is there with him at the Central Clinical Hospital. The President is in complete control of the situation."
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Medvedev, Presidential Press Secretary
Even if Yeltsin does recover quickly and return to the Kremlin, Western observers say it doesn't believe his political health will improve.
SOUNDBITE:
"Even before this health crisis there was a public perception, and it shows in the polls, that many people already perceive President Yeltsin as a lame duck President. This only adds to that, it gives hard evidence to the rumours of his ill health, and I think it'll make it very difficult for him to sustain a Presidential electoral campaign in the coming year."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael McFaul, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
Yeltsin was scheduled to your this massive construction project in the center of Moscow Wednesday. Manezh Square will become a modern underground shopping mall, a symbol of Moscow's new status as a capitalist power.
But whether Yeltsin will see Manezh Square as a pensioner or a president when it is completed in a few years is in question-- since his political future is looking more and more difficult to rebuild.

A whole epoch in Russian history is inseparably linked with his name. It was the time when Russia was changing drastically. Tough, positive and ambiguous years that we will never forget. When the time comes to define the place of this epoch in history the most important thing is to be fully objective.
