Central Asia is the core region of the Asiancontinent and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from Afghanistan in the south to Russia in the north. It is also sometimes referred to as Middle Asia, and, colloquially, "the 'stans" (as the five countries generally considered to be within the region all have names ending with that suffix) and is within the scope of the wider Eurasian continent.
In modern contexts, all definitions of Central Asia include these five republics of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan (pop. 16.6 million), Kyrgyzstan (5.5 million), Tajikistan (7.6 million), Turkmenistan (5.1 million), and Uzbekistan (29.5 million), for a total population of 64.7 million as of 2012. Other areas included are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, and sometimes Xinjiang and Tibet in western China and southern Siberia in eastern Russia.
Various definitions of its exact composition exist, and no one definition is universally accepted. Despite this uncertainty in defining borders, it does have some important overall characteristics. For one, Central Asia has historically been closely tied to its nomadic peoples and the Silk Road. As a result, it has acted as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods, and ideas between Europe, West Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.

Central Asian Militants Join 'Islamic State' In Syria
Hundreds of Islamist fighters have traveled from Central Asia to Syria to swell the ranks of Islamic State militants. Many are recruited while working as migrant laborers in Russia. Governments which have been fighting home-grown militant movements since the fall of the Soviet Union now fear the return of battle-hardened veterans will pose a new threat to their own security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's eight-day visit to five Central Asian countries and Russia has boosted India's multi-directional strategy. Modi's energetic diplomacy last week demonstrated that India can be the fourth seeker of influence there. The reason why Central Asians are eagerly letting India in is because of their widely perceived need for diversification away from the big two China and Russia. India would like to project that it is not replaying the harmful 'Great Game' but providing greater freedom to Central Asia, which treasures its independence. As a relatively declining power in Central Asia vis-a-vis ascendant China, Russia deems a growing Indian footprint there as desirable. During this marathon six-nation tour, Modi invoked India's heritage of moderate Islam and its complementarity with the Sovietised Islam of Central Asia. The real challenge for Indian diplomacy after the PM has done the spade work is to ensure that the SCO and BRICS, whose members issue communiques denouncing religious extremism, walk the talk.

Pyrrho of Elis went with Alexander the Great to Central Asia and India during the Greek invasion and conquest of the Persian Empire in 334–324 BC. There he met with early Buddhist masters. Greek Buddha shows how their Early Buddhism shaped the philosophy of Pyrrho, the famous founder of Pyrrhonian scepticism in ancient Greece. Christopher I. Beckwith traces the origins of a major tradition in Western philosophy to Gandhara, a country in Central Asia and northwestern India. He systematicall

What Is The Chagatai language?
Chagatai (جغتای Jağatāy) is an extinct Turkic language which was once widely spoken in Central Asia, and remained the shared literary language there until the early 20th century. It was also spoken by the early Mughal rulers in the Indian subcontinent, where it influenced the development of Hindustani. Ali-Shir Nava'i was the greatest representative of Chagatai literature.
As part of the preparation for the 1924 establishment of the Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan, Chagatai was officially renamed "Old Uzbek", which Edward A. Allworth argued "badly distorted the literary history of the region" and was used to give authors such as the 15th-centu

Assume that there are three different species living on earth, Red, Green and Blue. All three of them originate from fertile regions in Asia, however, with different techology values, Blue has more than Green and Green is stronger than Red. This is the starting condition. Now we propagate in time - accounting for population migration, oppression, political tensions and wars. We find that the three species have the tendency to extend their region of living in different directions, usually away from where opponents are already in the majority. Blue explores SouthEast Asia, Green moves towards India, while Red stays in the North and on the Pacif

The apple tree (Malus domestica) is a deciduous tree in the rose family best known for its sweet, pomaceous fruit, the apple. It is cultivated worldwide as a fruit tree, and is the most widely grown species in the genus Malus. The tree originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found today. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and were brought to North America by European colonists. Apples have religious and mythological significance in many cultures, including Norse, Greek and European Christian traditions.

The "Bactrian camel" is a large, even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of Central Asia. Of the two species of camel, it is by far the rarer. The Bactrian camel has two humps on its back, in contrast to the single-humped dromedary camel. Its population of two million exists mainly in the domesticated form. Some authorities, notably the International Union for Conservation of Nature , use the binomial name "Camelus ferus" for the wild Bactrian camel and reserve "Camelus bactrianus" for the domesticated Bactrian camel. Their name comes from the ancient historical region of Bactria.
The domesticated Bactrian camel has served as a pack a

Greek Buddha shows how their Early Buddhism shaped the philosophy of Pyrrho, the famous founder of Pyrrhonian scepticism in ancient Greece. Christopher I. Beckwith traces the origins of a major tradition in Western philosophy to Gandhara, a country in Central Asia and northwestern India. He systematically examines the teachings and practices of Pyrrho and of Early Buddhism, including those preserved in testimonies by and about Pyrrho, in the report on Indian philosophy two decades later by the Seleucid ambassador Megasthenes, in the first-person edicts by the Indian king Devanampriya Priyadarsi referring to a popular variety of the Dharma in the early third century BC, and in Taoist echoes of Gautama’s Dharma in Warring States China. Beckwith demonstrates how the teachings of Pyrrho agree closely with those of the Buddha Sakyamuni, “the Scythian Sage.” In the process, he identifies eight distinct philosophical schools in ancient northwestern India and Central Asia, including Early Zoroastrianism, Early Brahmanism, and several forms of Early Buddhism. He then shows the influence that Pyrrho’s brand of scepticism had on the evolution of Western thought, first in Antiquity, and later, during the Enlightenment, on the great philosopher and self-proclaimed Pyrrhonian, David Hume. Greek Buddha demonstrates that through Pyrrho, Early Buddhist thought had a major impact on Western philosophy.

Allworth argued "badly distorted the literary history of the region" and was used to give authors such as the 15th-century author Ali-Shir Nava'i an Uzbek identity. Early development of the language is sometime known as Middle Turkic, or even simply Turki.
The word Chagatai relates to the Chagatai Khanate (1225 –1680s), a descendant empire of the Mongol Empire left to Genghis Khan's second son, Chagatai Khan. Many of the Chagatai Turks and Tatars, who were the speakers of this language, claimed descent from Chagatai Khan.
History
Chagatai belongs to the Karluk branch of the Turkic language family. It is descended from the Old Turkic language that served as a lingua franca in Central Asia, with a strong infusion of Arabic and Persian words and turns of phrase. Its literary form was based on two earlier literary Middle Turkic languages, Karakhanid and Khorezmian. It can be divided into three periods:
Pre-classical Chagatai (1400–1465)
Classical Chagatai (1465–1600)
Post-classical Chagatai (1600–1921)
The first period is a transitional phase characterized by the retention of archaic forms; the second phase starts with the publication of Ali-Shir Nava'i's first Divan and is the highpoint of Chagatai literature, followed by the third phase, which is characterized by two bifurcating developments. One is the preservation of the classical Chagatai language of Nava'i, the other trend is the increasing influence of the dialects of the local spoken languages.
The Chagatai Turkic language lived its heyday under the Timurid dynasty. Chagatai remained the universal literary language of Central Asia until the Soviet reforms of the early 20th century, and had a marked influence on the development of the Hindustani language.
Influence on later Turkic languages
Uzbek and Uyghur are the two modern languages most closely related to Chagatai. Uzbeks regard Chagatai as the origin of their own language and claim Chagatai literature as their own. In 1921 in Uzbekistan, then a part of the Soviet Union, Chagatai was replaced by a literary language based on a local Uzbek dialect. The so-called Berendei, a 12th-century nomadic Turkic people possibly related to the Cumans, seem also to have spoken Chagatai.
Ethnologue records the use of the word "Chagatai" in Afghanistan to describe the "Tekke" dialect of Turkmen. Up to and including the eighteenth century, Chagatai was the main literary language in Turkmenistan as elsewhere in Central Asia. While it had some influence on Turkmen, the two languages belong to different branches of the Turkic language family.
Literature
The most famous of the Chagatai poets is Ali-Shir Nava'i, who – among his other works – wrote Muhakamat al-Lughatayn, a detailed comparison of the Chagatai and Persian languages, in which he argued for the superiority of the former. His fame is attested by the fact that Chagatai is sometimes called "Nava'i's language". Among prose works, Timur's biography is written in Chagatai Turkic, as is also the famous Baburnama (or Tuska Babure) of Babur, the Timurid founding the Mughal Empire.
Important works continued to be written in the Chagatai language into the early twentieth century. Among them are Musa Sayrami's Tārīkh-i amniyya (completed 1903) and its revised version Tārīkh-i ḥamīdi (completed 1908), representing the best sources on the Dungan Revolt (1862–77) in Xinjiang.
Chagatai literature is still studied in modern Turkey and regarded as part of the Turkic heritage.

50 Years of European Manichaeism, by Prof. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
Leading article first published by the distinguished Prof. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis on 25th March 2007 in the potrtals: Afroarticles, American Chronicle, and Buzzle
Note on the pictorial documentation
Several pictures will remind Buddhism and Buddhist Art in Central Asia and China to many viewers; this is only normal because, across Central Asia and parts of China, in the same locations, cities, towns and villages, Manichaeans, Buddhists and Nestorians lived together in either peace or persecuted by different Turkic, Mongol, Iranian, Sogdian or Chinese rulers. In addition, Central Asiatic and Chinese Manichaeans incorporated Buddha and elements of Buddhism in their religion, and by them Mani (Moni in Chinese - 摩尼) was called the Buddha of Light (光佛).
Note on the musical accompaniment
As the ancestors of the Modern Uighur Nation (who are all Muslims) were Manichaean in their entirety before 900-1200 years, we selected a few good examples of Uighur traditional instrumental music.

Europa Universalis IV is developed by Paradox Development Studios, and published by Paradox Interactive, both of which are pretty cool.

Blue explores SouthEast Asia, Green moves towards India, while Red stays in the North and on the Pacific Islands. Green rapidly extends its reign towards Central Asia, the Middle East, Europe and all of Africa. Then, Blue makes use of its strength to conquer all of China, India and the middle East, regions into which Green had moved before. Red is repelled from the Asian continent by Green and Blue and can only be found in Australia and Papua. However, some Red and some Green tribes have reached TerraNova, the two Americas starting to seddle there. After a short period, both Americas are divided into Red and Green countries with sharp borders which are - if at all - moved only relatively slowly. In the meantime, Green tribes in Central Asian Central Asian push back the Blue and invade India from the North. Also South China and SouthEast Asia are conquered by Green. Interestingly, the Red tribes in North China experience a renaissance, repelling Blue also from Korea, Japan and Mongolia. At the same time, Green takes over Indonesia. Despite the defeats in Asia, Blue enclaves close to the Black Sea and on the Arab Peninsula win against the surrounding Green. In the final stage of this video, the populations seem to vanish. The reason for this are still to be anlaysed.

Independence day of Kyrgyz Republic / День Независимости Кыргызской Республики
Kyrgyzstan (/kɜrɡɪˈstɑːn/ kur-gi-stahn;[6] Kyrgyz: Кыргызстан Kyrgyzstan (IPA: [qɯrʁɯsˈstɑn]); Russian: Киргизия or Кыргызстан), officially the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyz: Кыргыз Республикасы Kyrgyz Respublikasy; Russian: Кыргызская Республика Kyrgyzskaya Respublika), formerly known as Kirghizia, is a country located in Central Asia.[7] Landlocked and mountainous, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.
Kyrgyzstan's history spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain – which has helped preserve its ancient culture – Kyrgyzstan has historically been at the crossroads of several great civilizations, namely as part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes. Though long inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans, Kyrgyzstan has periodically come under foreign domination due to its strategic location, attaining sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Since independence, Kyrgyzstan has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic, although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts,[8][9] revolts,[10] economic troubles,[11][12] transitional governments,[13] and political party conflicts.[14] Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the TÜRKSOY community and the United Nations.
Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's 5.7 million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. The official language, Kyrgyz, is closely related to the other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken, a legacy of a century-long policy of Russification. The majority of the population (64 percent) are nondenominational Muslims.[15] In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence.

The domesticated Bactrian camel has served as a pack animal in inner Asia since ancient times. With its tolerance for cold, drought, and high altitudes, it enabled travel such as the caravans of the Silk Road. The wild form has dwindled to a population estimated at 800 in October 2002 and has been classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its range in the wild is restricted to remote regions of the Gobi and Taklamakan Deserts of Mongolia and China, migrating from the desert to rivers in Siberia during winter. A small number of wild Bactrian camels still roam the Mangystau Province of southwest Kazakhstan and the Kashmir valley in India. Feral herds of Bactrian camels are found in Australia.
The wild Bactrian camel was first described by Nikolai Przhevalsky in the late 19th century. Zoological opinion nowadays tends to favour the idea that "C. bactrianus" and "dromedarius" are descendants of two different sub-species of "C. ferus" and there is no evidence to suggest that the original range of "C. ferus" included those parts of Central Asia and Iran where some of the earliest Bactrian remains have been found. In particular, a population of wild Bactrian camel has been discovered to live within a part of the Gashun Gobi region of the Gobi Desert. This population is distinct from domesticated herds both in genetic makeup and in behavior.

SABO Dance Folklore Ensenble Uzbekistan at Festival du Houblon France
Full Dance Performance of the National Dance Ensemble »Sabo«, Tashkent from Uzbekistan at Frestival du Houblon on 21/8/2015.
I played at the beginning and at the end during a Photo Show on a vietnamese Jaw Harp (Dan Moi) an improvisation based on an Uzbek rhythm.
The music of Uzbekistan has reflected the diverse influences that have shaped the country. It is very similar to the music of the Middle East and is characterized by complicated rhythms and meters. Because of the long history of music in the country and the large number of different music styles and musical instruments, Uzbekistan is often regarded as one of the most musically diverse countries in Central Asia
Uzbekistan, also known as “the pearl, surrounded by sand”, is one of the oldest countries in Central Asia with a remarkable history. For centuries, Uzbekistan was influenced by the cultures of China, India, Middle East and Europe. The people of Uzbekistan are known for their friendliness and hospitality.
“When we travel the world, we teach people about our unique and rich Uzbek culture and welcome all who want to visit our beautiful country!”

The world is shocked with a picture. A child. Dead on a beach.
Who killed him?
Did the U.S. caused the current crisis through its nearly 13 years of dropping bombs and firing missiles from Central Asia to Africa and countless places in between?
Mike has some things to say about this.

Xinjiang and China's Central Asia Strategy
How do China's concerns over the Uyghurs of Xinjiang affect its strategy in Central Asia? Arguing that China's turn to land routes to the West arise from its desire to escape from US control of sea lanes, Ben Chang suggests ways in which China's approach to former Soviet parts of Central Asia may mirror its strategy in Xinjiang.
This presentation will offer insights of importance to anyone following Central Asia, China, energy, development, and western strategies in Central Asia.

Simon Reeve travels through Central Asia in this four-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters internationally. The adventure took Simon from the far north-west of Kazakhstan, by the Russian border, east to the Chinese border, south through Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the edge of Afghanistan, and west to Uzbekistan and the legendary Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.
The Guardian said it was 'a thrilling postcard from the edge'
The Times said: 'Simon Reeve's journey through Kazakhstan is a first-class Boys Own adventure on film and illuminating too. I can't imagine anyone switching off who stays for the first five minutes.'

Sweaty, itchy beards. Pounding 45°C desert heat. Lung-implodingly high mountain passes. Cows in lime-green Ladas. More friendly kids than an extremely enthusiastic baseball coach could high-five in the busiest of baseball seasons, and so much more vodka than even the most serious Russian alcoholic could ever hope to consume. This film is the result of months of adventure whittled down to minutes of digital moving-image-magic for your armchair entertainment. Kick back with a nice cup of tea and enjoy some snippets of our bike ride through Central Asia.
Huge thanks to our friends for the fun and adventure along the way, and of course for the amazing footage! Good luck with the rest of your adventures!

Silk Road IV: Central and West Asia (2007)
Episode 4 of 5 - From Wasteland to Motherland - Central Asia
From Kazakhstan, this episode cuts through the steppe regions of Central Asia to Russia and the Ukraine. We meet ethnic Kazakhs in China seeking to return to their homeland and displaced Chechens deciding whether to return to their war-torn homeland or stay where it is peaceful. And Cossacks, many of whom are now reviving their proud heritage of military service in Imperial Russia, asserting themselves as bastions of support for the Putin government. As we continue our journey through Central Asia, we listen to the songs and stories of these people who are longing to return to the homelands of their distant memories.
Launched in 1980, NHK's renowned Silk Road series was the first foreign TV program allowed to film Silk Road inside communist China. The series sparked enormous interest. A quarter of a century later, NHK re-visits Silk Road with high-definition cameras, and continues further through Central and West Asia.
