Suharto (help·info) (8 June 1921 – 27 January 2008) was the second President of Indonesia, having held the office for 31 years from 1967 following Sukarno's removal until his resignation in 1998.
Suharto was born in a small village, Kemusuk, in the Godean area near Yogyakarta, during the Dutch colonial era. He grew up in humble circumstances. His Javanese peasant parents divorced not long after his birth, and he was passed between foster parents for much of his childhood. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, Suharto served in Japanese-organised Indonesian security forces. Indonesia's independence struggle saw him joining the newly formed Indonesian army. Suharto rose to the rank of Major General following Indonesian independence. An attempted coup on 30 September 1965 was countered by Suharto-led troops and was blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party. The army subsequently led an anti-communist purge, and Suharto wrested power from Indonesia's founding president, Sukarno. He was appointed acting president in 1967 and President the following year. Support for Suharto's presidency was strong throughout the 1970s and 1980s but eroded following a severe financial crisis that led to widespread unrest and his resignation in May 1998. Suharto died in 2008.

A strong film on the anti-Suharto protests and the army’s support for him in the days before he stepped down.
After devastating and deadly riots in Indonesia the question on everybody’s lips is whether the people can convince the army to join them. We have an exclusive interview with one of the country’s most powerful military men, General Prabowo, who has been linked with the Muslim ‘Green’ faction which wants to seize power for itself. Amien Rais, leader of the 28 million strong opposition Muhammadiyah party, talks of the strength of his supporters to force Suharto to clean up his act. The head of the IMF in Jakarta tells of his frustrations in dealing with Suharto. The IMF demanded that some of the nepotism and cronyism stop, but Suharto has clearly been consolidating his family’s position. His daughter Titiek rebuts questions with a regal air. Her multi-billion plan to build the world’s longest bridge was blocked by the IMF. In a multi-story car park the military prepare for another food riot. Mothers are arrested as they protest about the soaring cost of baby milk. They hand the soldiers flowers as a symbol of ‘People’s Power’, the Philippines movement where the army sided with the people to topple the President.

Indonesian President Suharto held talks with Bosnian government leaders today (Monday), then left on a plane which was shot at as it landed to pick him up.
Suharto left the Bosnian capital unharmed, but the incident ended an otherwise morale-boosting visit on a sorry note.
Indonesian President Suharto arrived in Sarajevo today in the full knowledge that when UN envoy Yasushi Akashi did the same thing the day before, he was shot at.
Safety guarantees were obtained and peacekeepers surrounded the plane to ensure that today's arrival could pass without incident.
Akashi welcomed the Indonesian president at Sarajevo's closely guarded airport before his own scheduled meeting with officials in the Bosnian Serb stronghold of Pale.
UN soldiers remained on high alert as Serbs have scuttled previous visits to the Bosnian capital by threatening to shoot at their planes.
The Indonesian president's exposed motorcade route was now deserted as a result of a sudden upsurge in violence which has killed six people and wounded at least seven over the last two days.
Suharto arrived for talks with Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic at the capital's presidency building. Indonesia and other Moslem nations are strong backers of the Bosnian government in its quest to recover land lost to the breakaway Serbs since fighting began in April 1992. Suharto had intended this visit as an indication of his continued support.

Indonesian President Suharto resigned on Thursday (21/05) and handed over power to Vice President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, asking the nation to forgive any of his failings. Habibie, 61, immediately took the presidential oath of office before Supreme Court justices, a Koran held over his head. The 76-year-old Suharto, who had ruled since 1966, had been under escalating domestic and foreign pressure to step down amid the country's worst political and economic crisis since he came to power. The events capped a dramatic week of political turmoil including protests and riots last week which left 500 people dead.

Former Indonesian dictator Suharto responded well to kidney dialysis and his vital signs improved on Sunday after he was hospitalised in critical condition, doctors said.
Suharto, 86, quickly showed signs of improvement after being put on a dialysis machine on Saturday evening, said a hospital spokesman.
Suharto was admitted to Pertamina Hospital on Friday with swollen organs, a dangerously low heart rate and anaemia.
"He's still generally weak but awake. His blood pressure is 100 over 50. His heart and lungs have shown improvements compared to their condition yesterday. The build up of liquids in his body has been reduced," said Joko Sanyoto.
Suharto was also receiving a blood transfusion and needs a second pacemaker, doctors said.
Suharto, accused of overseeing a brutal purge of more than half a (m) million left-wing opponents at the outset of his 32-year reign, was conscious but drowsy from medication, several Cabinet members said after visiting him.
Sanyoto said doctors were "still putting Suharto under intensive care and strict monitoring."
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urged Indonesians to pray for Suharto's recovery.
A dialysis machine and other equipment was rushed to Suharto's bedside and 40 specialists assembled to diagnose and treat the former strongman, who was toppled by a pro-democracy uprising during the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis.
Doctor Joko Raharjo, a member of the medical team treating Suharto, said on Saturday that the former dictator's general condition was worse than when he was treated for intestinal bleeding and heart problems in 2006.
Raharjo said Suharto had been treated at home for around a week before being admitted to hospital.
Since his ouster, Suharto has lived a secluded life on a leafy lane in Jakarta and is rarely seen in public. Two years after his ouster, prosecutors filed charges that he embezzled 600 (m) million US dollar in public funds, but legal proceedings were suspended because of his poor health.
As an army general, he seized power in a 1965 coup and over the following three decades hundreds of thousands of perceived communists and separatist sympathisers were murdered or imprisoned across this vast island nation of 235 (m) million people. No one has ever been punished for the crimes.
Suharto is said to have suffered permanent brain damage and some speech loss from his ailments, but during recent Islamic holidays he received a stream of high-profile guests and gave a rare media interview in November after winning a defamation lawsuit against Time magazine.
Time published allegations that Suharto and his family had amassed up to 15 (b) billion US dollar in stolen state funds.
Transparency International has said the Suharto family robbed the nation of more than twice that amount.

STORYLINE:
Tommy Suharto, the multi-millionaire fugitive son of Indonesia's former dictator, wants to surrender to police, his sister said on Friday.
Siti Hardiyanti "Tutut" Rukmana made the surprise revelation as a top police general announced security forces were gearing up for a major operation to apprehend Tommy.
He has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with authorities since he was convicted for corruption last year and sentenced to 18 months in jail.
In an interview with privately owned El Shinta radio, Tutut said her brother Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra had telephoned her earlier in the week.
He denied accusations that he had ordered the assassination of the judge who sentenced him or that he had masterminded a bombing campaign in the capital, she said.
Tommy, the 38-year old youngest son of ex-President Suharto, was convicted for his part in a multimillion land scam, a role he denies.
He is the only member of the former strongman's family to be found guilty of corruption so far.
Tommy told his sister that he wanted a chance to refute all the allegations against him.
She said she had passed this message on to the police who then summoned her for questioning on Friday, along with another sister, Siti Hediyati Prabowo, and Tommy's wife, Tata.
Tutut said that although Tommy had contacted her, she and other Suharto family members did not know how to contact him.
But a Jakarta police spokesman said police had evidence that Tommy was in regular touch with his family and had visited Tutut's Jakarta home on his birthday on July 15.
President Megawati Sukarnoputri has ordered the police to apprehend Tommy.
He has also been implicated in the bombing of the Jakarta Stock Exchange in which 15 people died.
This week, police said they uncovered a cache of arms and bombs at a house belonging to Tommy.
They later arrested two suspects who allegedly confessed that they had killed the judge on Tommy's orders.

Ketujuh jenazah yang selanjutnya dianugerahi gelar Pahlawan Revolusi ini merupakan korban pemicu yang menimbulkan rentetan aksi kekerasan lainnya.
