The late Manchester street photographer Shirley Baker captured scenes of family life in some of the poorest neighbourhoods during the 1960s. Rather than depicting sadness and deprivation, however, the images show a certain "joie de vivre." Anna Douglas, curator of a forthcoming exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery in London, explains how Shirley Baker celebrated life with her lens.

What drives die-hard fanatics of the American Civil War to bring some of its bloodiest battles to life? For the past four years photographer Sandy LeBrun-Evans has been documenting a curious subculture in the Southern United States -- Civil War re-enactment. Union and Confederate soldiers, their wives and children in full period costume, are seen dotting the hillsides near such crucial battlefields as Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg. What's behind this fascination?

Are these the best beards in the world? - BBC World Service
Photographer Brock Elbank invited dozens of bearded men - and one bearded woman (seen above) - to his studio to celebrate the enduring appeal of the beard across different countries. For him and his subjects it's not just to do with fashion but with self-expression, culture and - in one instance - illness. More than eighty of his pictures are being exhibited at Somerset House, London in March.

Diving for bombs in Cambodia's black waters - BBC World Service
A devastating legacy of Cambodia's civil war are the bombs that still lie at the bottom of the country's waterways. They kill and maim unsuspecting fishermen each year. The US-funded Golden West Humanitarian Foundation has been training Cambodians to retrieve unexploded ordnance from the river bottoms. Charles Fox has been documenting this remarkable programme. His work will be shown at London's Brunei Gallery starting in July.
