2007. Young Waters (Child #94) – Traditional Scottish
Child collected only one version of this ballad.
When the queen sees Young Waters riding to court, one of the lords asks her who the best-looking man is. When she answers that it is Young Waters, the king is angry that she did not choose him. Despite her efforts to appease him, the king throws Young Waters in prison and has him executed.
It is thought by some that the jealous king may have been James I of Scotland. In a Scandinavian version, "Folke Lovmandson", the hero is favoured by many ladies of the Swedish court, especially Queen Helvig. King Magnus 1 kills the innocent knight by having him rolled downhill in a barrel set with knives.

Child considered this to be one of the finest ballads in the language. The earliest publication is in Percy's "Reliques of Ancient English Poetry" (1765). It was widely known in Scotland well into the nineteenth century with versions and there are closely related ballads in Scandinavian tradition.
It has been recorded by Ewan MacColl, Katherine Campbell, Gordeanna McCulloch, Maddy Prior and Frankie Armstrong. The melody is based on the singing of Alexander Robb of New Deer, Aberdeenshire.

Edinburgh, a city that is often mispronounced by first time visitors, was the first city we visited on our adventure tour around Scotland. Flying in all the way from Bangkok to visit Edinburgh for the New Year's Celebration of Hogmany was a fitting way for us to end 2013 and celebrate 2014. Having had a taste of Europe earlier on in the year in the form of visiting Finland, Estonia and Bulgaria we were thrilled to have the opportunity to come and visit Scotland's culture capital (Edinburgh) for the first time during the most festive time of the year. Portfolio Questions - Scottish Parliament: 7th May 2014
Edinburgh, a city that is often mispronounced by first time visitors, was the first city we visited on our adventure tour around Scotland. Arriving a few days before Hogmanay, we spent our mornings, afternoons and evenings trying to explore as much of Edinburgh as we possibly could. As a very pedestrian friendly city – with most of its main attractions located in the downtown core – we found ourselves wandering around aimlessly for hours on end marveling at the magnificent castles, old architecture and Christmas themed markets. To escape the winter chills we'd often pop into local pops to down some warm drinks and devour a plate of savory Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. To satisfy our sweet tooth, we tried eating a deep-fried Mars bar for the first time. For those unacquainted, basically it is just a chocolate bar dipped in batter and then deep fried in a chipper. It comes out all melted and gooey, which actually enhances its tastes considerably; however, at the cost of taking something already unhealthy and making it far less nutritionally viable. As a side trip we checked out the Looney Dook, where a bunch of mad men, women and children dash like crazy – wearing ridiculous costumes – into the freezing cold waters of the Firth of Forth. Finally, for a bit of downtime, we relaxed in our hotel room and gave ourselves the challenge of eating all kinds of different Scottish food and cuisine for the first time. Some of the most distinct things we tried included Irn Bru, Tablet and Scottish Whisky. Overall, our time in Edinburgh was brilliant and the following is a top attractions travel guide offering a snapshot of the best things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland during your next vacation to this world class city that is home to some of the most fascinating and quirky festivals.

ʬ Scotland, Scottish Gaelic: Alba [ˈal̪ˠapə] ( listen)) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a border with England to the south, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the east and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. In addition to the mainland, the country is made up of more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
The Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707. Having entered into a personal union with the kingdoms of England (which included what is now England and Wales) and Ireland following James VI's succession to the English and Irish thrones in 1603, Scotland subsequently entered into a political union with England on 1 May 1707 to create a single Kingdom of Great Britain. This union resulted from the Treaty of Union agreed in 1706 and enacted by the twin Acts of Union passed by the Parliaments of both countries, despite popular opposition and anti-union riots in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and elsewhere. Great Britain itself subsequently entered into a political union with Ireland on 1 January 1801 to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Scotland's legal system has remained separate from those of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in public and private law. The continued existence of legal, educational and religious institutions distinct from those in the remainder of the UK have all contributed to the continuation of Scottish culture and national identity since the 1707 union. In 1999, a devolved legislature, the Scottish Parliament, was reconvened with authority over many areas of home affairs following a referendum in 1997. In May 2011, the Scottish National Party won an overall majority in the Scottish Parliament; as a result a referendum on Scottish independence took place on 18 September 2014, which was rejected by a majority of the Scottish population.
Scotland is a member nation of the British–Irish Council, and the British–Irish Parliamentary Assembly. Scotland is represented in the European Union and the European Parliament with six MEPs.
"Scotland" comes from Scoti, the Latin name for the Gaels. The Late Latin word Scotia ("land of the Gaels") was initially used to refer to Ireland. By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to (Gaelic-speaking) Scotland north of the river Forth, alongside Albania or Albany, both derived from the Gaelic Alba. The use of the words Scots and Scotland to encompass all of what is now Scotland became common in the Late Middle Ages.
History
Early history
Repeated glaciations, which covered the entire land mass of modern Scotland, destroyed any traces of human habitation that may have existed before the Mesolithic period. It is believed the first post-glacial groups of hunter-gatherers arrived in Scotland around 12,800 years ago, as the ice sheet retreated after the last glaciation.
Groups of settlers began building the first known permanent houses on Scottish soil around 9,500 years ago, and the first villages around 6,000 years ago. The well-preserved village of Skara Brae on the mainland of Orkney dates from this period. Neolithic habitation, burial and ritual sites are particularly common and well preserved in the Northern Isles and Western Isles, where a lack of trees led to most structures being built of local stone.
The discovery in Scotland of a 4000-year-old tomb with burial treasures at Forteviot, near Perth, the capital of a Pictish Kingdom in the 8th and 9th centuries AD, is unrivalled anywhere in Britain. It contains the remains of an early Bronze Age ruler laid out on white quartz pebbles and birch bark. It was also discovered for the first time early Bronze Age people placed flowers in their graves.
Scotland may have been part of a Late Bronze Age maritime trading culture called the Atlantic Bronze Age, which included other Celtic nations, and the areas that became England, France, Spain, and Portugal.

Throughout the referendum campaign the economy has been a political football.
Those who favour independence say Scotland would be richer on its own, while unionists argue its economic future is safeguarded by remaining part of the United Kingdom.
Many Scottish business people have kept their opinions to themselves not wanted to risk offending customers, investors or even politicians.
In overall gross domestic product terms, Scotland accounts for 9.2 percent of the entire United Kingdom, however GDP per person is higher point out the yes campaigners.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION: This is yet another gorgeous melody from Scotland! My arrangement for chorus a cappella seeks to remain simple, while still being an effective and moving piece.
The arrangement opens with a tenor solo (which may be sung by the tenor section, if desired), and ends on a low, quiet chord, perfectly ending the phrase “My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream, Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PERFORMANCE: This piece was performed by Matthew Curtis of Choral Tracks. Matthew is a professional singer and recently sang with the Grammy Award-winning group Chanticleer. You can visit his website at http://choraltracks.com/.

LYRICS (Traditional Scottish)
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise.
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Thou stock-dove, whose echo resounds through the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forbear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where wild in the woodlands the primroses grow.
There oft, as mild evening sweeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides.
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As gath'ring sweet flow'rets she stems thy clear wave.
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my days.
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Peak Oil: Scottish oil Revenues the terrible truth!
Originally Published on Sep 6, 2014

1952. Child Waters (Child #63) – (Traditional English / Scottish)
Fair Ellen (or Burd Helen or Lady Margaret) is pregnant by her lover Child Waters (or Lord John or Lord William). She insists on accompanying him to the north disguised as a pageboy, and is treated as such by him. They have to cross a body of water, sometimes the river Clyde, and she struggles to swim. When they come to his castle they are welcomed in for food, drink and a rest, but she is seated with the servants. When Child Waters sends Ellen to feed his horse she goes into labour at the stable. Waters relents and, going against the traditions of his class, says today will be both her wedding and her son's christening.
Lyrics and chords of this song can be found here: http://www.raymondfolk.com/page/Child+Waters+%28Child+%2363%29

Scotland hinglands haven is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and also covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a border with England to the south, and also is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the eastern as well as the North Channel as well as Irish Sea to the south-west. In addition to the landmass, the country is composed of greater than 790 islands, consisting of the Northern Isles and also the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the nation's resources as well as second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which changed Scotland into among the commercial, intellectual, as well as industrial giants of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city, was as soon as one of the globe's leading commercial cities and also now exists at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters include a big industry of the North Atlantic as well as the North Sea, containing the biggest oil reserves in the European Union. This has actually given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil resources.....Read More Here: http://worldgeographicchannel.com/sco...

Things to do in Edinburgh Scotland Travel Guide and Top Attractions
Edinburgh, a city that is often mispronounced by first time visitors, was the first city we visited on our adventure tour around Scotland. Flying in all the way from Bangkok to visit Edinburgh for the New Year's Celebration of Hogmany was a fitting way for us to end 2013 and celebrate 2014. Having had a taste of Europe earlier on in the year in the form of visiting Finland, Estonia and Bulgaria we were thrilled to have the opportunity to come and visit Scotland's culture capital (Edinburgh) for the first time during the most festive time of the year.
Things to do in Edinburgh Scotland Travel Guide and Top Attractions travel playlist in no particular order:

the water is wide (waly waly love be bonny)
the water is wide (waly waly love be bonny)
Scottish Folk Song [1600's] (traditional):
"The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I
A ship there is and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim
I leaned my back against an oak
Thinking it was a trusty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me
I reached my finger into some soft bush
Thinking the fairest flower to find
I pricked my finger to the bone
And left the fairest flower behind
Oh love be handsome and love be kind
Gay as a jewel when first it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew
Must I go bound while you go free
Must I love a man who doesn't love me
Must I be born with so little art
As to love a man who'll break my heart
When cockle shells turn silver bells
Then will my love come back to me
When roses bloom in winter's gloom
Then will my love return to me"

NOTE: Almost all of the panoramic photos I used for this music video are actually of Scotland.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCORING: SATB chorus a cappella
