Dumfries (
i/dʌmˈfriːs/ dum-FREESS; possibly from Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Phris) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth. Dumfries was the county town of the former county of Dumfriesshire. Dumfries is nicknamed Queen of the South. People from Dumfries are known colloquially as Doonhamers.
There are at least two theories on the etymology of the name. One is that the name Dumfries originates from the Scottish Gaelic name Dún Phris which means "Fort of the Thicket". According to another theory, the name is a corruption of two words which mean the Friars’ Hill; those who favour this idea allege the formation of a religious house near the head of what is now the Friars’ Vennel.
Located on the east side of the lowest crossing point of the River Nith, no positive information has been obtained of the era and circumstances in which the town of Dumfries was founded.

In this next route learning video, we take a Scotrail Class 156 from Carlisle to Dumfries along the Dumfries branch of the West Coast Main Line over Shap route. Although the journey is set in the present day, the route is modeled as it was in the late 1970s therefore Gretna Green station isn't there. Our only intermediate stop will be at Annan. In this next route learning video, we take a Scotrail Class 156 from Carlisle to Dumfries along the Dumfries branch of the West Coast Main Line over Shap route. Although the journey is set in the present day, the route is modeled as it was in the late 1970s therefore Gretna Green station isn't there. Our only intermediate stop will be at Annan.
I've included information about speed limits and braking points. Apologies for any lag or stutter.

We were commissioned to produce a short film to promote the Dumfries and Galloway tourism industry. Our aim was to showcase some of the wonderful attractions the county has to offer. Caerlaverock Castle is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south of Dumfries, on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve. Caerlaverock was a stronghold of the Maxwell family from the 13th century until the 17th century when the castle was abandoned. Caerlaverock Castle is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south of Dumfries, on the edge of the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve. Caerlaverock was a stronghold of the Maxwell family from the 13th century until the 17th century when the castle was abandoned. It was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and underwent several partial demolitions and reconstructions over the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 17th century, the Maxwells were created Earls of Nithsdale, and built a new lodging within the walls, described as among "the most ambitious early classical domestic architecture in Scotland". In 1640 the castle was besieged for the last time and was subsequently abandoned. Although demolished and rebuilt several times, the castle retains the distinctive triangular plan first laid out in the 13th century. Caerlaverock Castle was built to control trade in early times.[2]
Today, the castle is in the care of Historic Scotland and is a popular tourist attraction. It is protected as a scheduled monument, and as a category A listed building.

Bruizer | Destination Dumfries and Galloway
We were commissioned to produce a short film to promote the Dumfries and Galloway tourism industry. Our aim was to showcase some of the wonderful attractions the county has to offer. We used our ditto gear HDR time-lapse rig extensively in the shoot to produce the stunning moves in the film along with traditional filming, to capture the people and culture of the area. This included filming the local towns and villages, the beautiful vistas and rare wildlife, the many activities on offer in the area, and the vast history ready for visitors to discover as well as the events which take place throughout the year. http://www.bruizer.co.uk/- published: 18 Feb 2015

Pluto has a tail!. The path of New Horizons as it flew past Pluto on July 14 took it directly into the dwarf planet's shadow, and while this provided a fascinating opportunity to see its atmosphere lit up by the Sun, it also allowed the spacecraft to see the effects of solar wind on Pluto ... It is mostly composed of nitrogen ions, which form a plasma tail, although scientists aren’t yet sure what shape or size this tail is ... ....
