In celebration of the WI's centenary, Lucy Worsley goes beyond the stereotypes of jam and Jerusalem to reveal the surprisingly radical side of this Great British Institution. Beginning on the Welsh island of Anglesey, where the WI's first meeting was held in a garden shed in 1915, Lucy discovers that its humble origins were no bar to the movement's grand ambitions. Some of the institute's founding members were suffragettes and it saw itself as a campaigning organisation, engaged in the fight for women's rights. Lucy explores some of the WI's most important campaigns, like its 1918 crusade for decent housing and its remarkably radical fight for equal pay in 1943. Lucy uncovers the crucial role the WI played on the home front during both world wars. In the Second World War, the institute's 350,000 members took a leading role in feeding a hungry nation. With the help of some modern WI ladies, Lucy recreates a wartime institute jam factory, thousands of which were set up by branches up and down the country to produce hundreds of tonnes of jam. When she traces the story of the WI into the post-war period, Lucy discovers that membership began to decline as the institute struggled to cope with the social revolution of the 1960s. To find out how the WI reinvented itself for the 21st century, Lucy meets some of the members who combatted the WI's staid and stodgy image by stripping naked for a charity calendar in 2000. She also joins a protest alongside the Shoreditch Sisters, one of a number of recently formed new-wave WIs whose proudly feminist stance is attracting a new generation of younger members.

Thirteen competitors were challenged to make chocolate creations on the theme 'New York meets Vienna". The overall winner of the contest received the title ' Austrian Chocolate Master". They will represent Austria at the World Chocolate Masters in Paris in May. The Contest started at the 9am and ended at 2pm. Competitors had to ensemble chocolate elements that they had already prepared in their workshops, into one piece of work. The number of vehicles on China's roads is soaring, bringing a growing reliance on imported oil and worsening already severe air pollution. Foreign car makers, perhaps sensing an opportunity, are beginning to test some of their environmentally friendly vehicles in China. Recently they held a rally in Shanghai so manufacturers could show off their wares. VOICE-OVER: Michelin have held their Challenge Bibendum three times in Europe and twice in America. It's an acknowledgement of China's growing contribution to the world economy - and its increasing levels of pollution - that the tyre company chose to hold its clean car rally in Shanghai, on the city's new Formula One race track. Each manufacturer brought along its latest clean machine. There were hybrid vehicles which use a conventional engine and an electric motor, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that don't use any petrol at all, even cars that run on plant extracts. Some are concept vehicles, others ready for the road. But this is a challenge when more than 80 percent of all toys sold in the U.S. are made in China. STORYLINE: Arrowcopter is an iconic American toy. Invented by Richard Evanoff, it was first presented at the 1968 Toy Fair. Today, after 40 years, Arrowcopter is still being made. Now it is Richard Evanoff's daughter Debbie who owns and runs the company. She says that a lot of parents remember playing with the Arrowcopter as children and they are now introducing it to their children. All the components to the Arrowcopter are made in the U.S. Debbie explains how each part of the toy is made in a different state in the country. Another all-American toy is the Twinkle baby Bonding Doll. Lara Pebbles, owner of the Twinkle Baby company explains that this is also entirely made in the US. She says its non-toxic, and the cotton is organic. Both these companies are having to compete with the Chinese market. She says there are a lot of less than adequate toys being imported. Not yet given an English language title, the film's Mandarin title literally translates as 'Storm of Wiretapping.' It marks the latest collaboration for Alan Mak and Felix Chong - the director/screenwriter and screenwriter behind the smash hit 'Infernal Affairs' series, which inspired Hollywood remake 'The Departed'. Four top Hong Kong actors will star - Louis Koo, Daniel Wu, Lau Ching-wan, Alex Fung Chung-sun - along with one lone actress, Zhang Jing-chu. All the stars were at the press conference. Louis Koo, Daniel Wu and Zhang Jing-chu first worked together in drug dealer film "Protege", directed by Derek Yi. Various of models on stage wearing tiaras STORYLINE CROWNING A MILLION DOLLAR BRIDE A Tokyo jewellery store is not letting the recession take the glamour out of weddings this spring by unveiling two gold tiaras on Wednesday, each worth 100 (m) million yen (1,120,000 US dollars). The tiaras were designed by Yumi Katsura in collaboration with Jewelry-maker Ginza Tanaka with an eye to the bridal market. In Japan, brides often change their costumes two or three times during a wedding and wear different colours. Usually the bride will change from a conventional white gown to a Japanese Kimono, and then possibly to a western style dress of another colour such as red or blue. Noboru Tanaka, President of Ginza Tanaka, believes that along with the attraction of bringing a new colour to the wedding ceremonies, the tiaras are a good investment as investors flee towards precious metals in the current uncertain economic times. The tiaras were modelled on Wednesday (04 JAN 2009) by women wearing dresses encrusted with gold, one designed by Katsura recently, the other designed over 20 years ago. Each dress is worth approximately 60 (m) million yen (675-thousand US dollars). After designing the gown, Katsura hooked up with gold jewellery maker Ginza Tanaka to make the tiaras. The "Golden Tiara Collection" was unveiled at Tokyo's downtown Imperial Hotel. Designers hope to see them in churches and wedding parlours soon.
