Just north of present-day Polonnaruwa town, 140km (90 miles) north of Kandy, are the ruins of ancient Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, which date from the late 10th century.
This was filmed in HD from my visit to Sri Lanka in April'10.

Throughout history in Sri Lanka, emperors of each dynasty deeply venerated Buddhism. We find in Polonnaruwa that different emperors built ornate palaces to enshrine the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and even housed the most precious Buddhist relics in one of the palaces. If you make a walk around the area, you will notice and appreciate that this is like an outdoor museum of Buddhist architecture.

Polonnaruwa
Poḷonnaruwa (Sinhalese Poḷonnaruwa or Puḷattipura, Tamil Polaṉṉaṟuvai or Puḷatti nakaram) is the main town of Polonnaruwa District in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. Kaduruwela area is the Polonnaruwa New Town and the other part of Polonnaruwa remains as the royal ancient city of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa.
The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the country once more under a local leader.
The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Currently the new Polonnaruwa is under going a major development project known as the "Awakening of Polonnaruwa" under the concept of President Maithripala Sirisena. It envisions the development of all sectors in Polonnaruwa including roads, electricity, agriculture, education, health and environment will be developed comprehensively.

Throughout history in Sri Lanka, emperors of each dynasty deeply venerated Buddhism. We find in Polonnaruwa that different emperors built ornate palaces to enshrine the Buddha, Bodhisattvas and even housed the most precious Buddhist relics in one of the palaces. If you make a walk around the area, you will notice and appreciate that this is like an outdoor museum of Buddhist architecture.

Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka - Travel - Video Blog - Driftwood Vlog
Driftwood VLOG Sri Lanka Polonnaruwa is one of the main cultural sights in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO world heritage site. The ancient city is like Anuradhapura und Dambulla/Sigiriya and part of the so called Golden Triangle in the middle of the country. We took a bus to Polo from Dambulla, which took us about 2.5 hours including a short break. We didn’t make a reservation for a hostel, but as always there were already people waiting to lead us to their accommodation. The town of Polonnaruwa is really small, but still has a good amount of guesthouses. For 20 Euros we stayed at Manel guesthouse, which was clean and had a fancy touch. Driftwood VLOG Sri Lanka
Polonnaruwa is one of the main cultural sights in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO world heritage site.
The ancient city is like Anuradhapura und Dambulla/Sigiriya and part of the so called Golden
Triangle in the middle of the country.
We took a bus to Polo from Dambulla, which took us about 2.5 hours including a short break.
We didn’t make a reservation for a hostel, but as always there were already people waiting to
lead us to their accommodation. The town of Polonnaruwa is really small, but still has a good
amount of guesthouses. For 20 Euros we stayed at Manel guesthouse, which was clean and had a
fancy touch.
After a good nights sleep we started our tour really early and entered the Holy City.
You can rent bikes everywhere, and it makes it really easy to get around: The compound is huge
and we wouldn’t recommend walking around there for hours, especially in the midday heat.
The entrance fee costs 25 Euros per person, they really know how to make some money with their
cultural sights, but the museum entrance is included and there is a lot to see.
You can definitely spend a whole day in the area if you want to explore every little ruin.
