The Iraq War, or the War in Iraq (also referred to as the Occupation of Iraq, the Second Gulf War, or Operation Iraqi Freedom by the United States military), was a conflict that occurred in Iraq from March 20, 2003 to December 15, 2011, though sectarian violence continues since and has caused hundreds of fatalities.
Prior to the war, the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom claimed that Iraq's alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) posed a threat to their security and that of their coalition/regional allies. In 2002, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1441 which called for Iraq to completely cooperate with UN weapon inspectors to verify that Iraq was not in possession of WMD and cruise missiles. The United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) found no evidence of WMD, but could not verify the accuracy of Iraq's declarations regarding what weapons it possessed. Lead weapons inspector Hans Blix advised the UN Security Council that while Iraq was cooperating in terms of access, Iraq's declarations with regards to WMD still could not be verified.
Iraq borders Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Jordan to the southwest and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad is in the center-east of the country.
Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run through the center of Iraq, flowing from northwest to southeast. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrast with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Forcecaptain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada. She has one older brother, David. Her father is of Russian and Dutch descent and her mother is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow's mother was raised a strict Roman Catholic, and Maddow herself grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and played three sports in high school. Referencing John Hughes films, she describes herself in high school as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl."

A great documentary of the Iran Air Force F-14 tomcat shooting down Russian made aircraft during the Iran Iraq war. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. Iraqi soldiers faced a a huge blast caused by the massive explosion of an IS Vbied right in front their position in Baiji Iraq. The soldiers were aware of the approaching vehicle and took cover behind a mound just moments before the detonation and following shockwave. The attack was filmed from an overwatch position behind the Iraqi line and gives a good overview of the happenings. The attack seems to have apparently failed since the Iraqi soldiers targeted by the SVBIED seem mostly unharmed after the explosion.

US made F-14 Aircraft SHOOTS DOWN Russian made aircraft in Iran-Iraq war Documentary
A great documentary of the Iran Air Force F-14 tomcat shooting down Russian made aircraft during the Iran Iraq war. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the collapse of the F-111B project. The F-14 was the first of the American teen-series fighters, which were designed incorporating the experience of air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first flew in December 1970 and made its first deployment in 1974 with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served as the U.S. Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical aerial reconnaissance platform. In the 1990s, it added the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system and began performing precision ground-attack missions.[1]
The Tomcat was retired from the U.S. Navy's active fleet on 22 September 2006, having been supplanted by the Boeing F/A-18E and F Super Hornets.[2] The F-14 remains in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, having been exported to Iran in 1976, when the U.S. had amicable diplomatic relations with Iran.
Iran
The sole foreign customer for the Tomcat was the Imperial Iranian Air Force, during the reign of the last Shah (King) of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In the early 1970s, the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) was searching for an advanced fighter, specifically one capable of intercepting Soviet MiG-25 reconnaissance flights. After a visit of U.S. President Richard Nixon to Iran in 1972, during which Iran was offered the latest in American military technology, the IIAF narrowed its choice between the F-14 Tomcat or the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. Grumman Corporation arranged a competitive demonstration of the Eagle against the Tomcat before the Shah, and in January 1974, Iran ordered 30 F-14s and 424 AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, initiating Project Persian King, worth US$300 million. A few months later, this order was increased to a total of 80 Tomcats and 714 Phoenix missiles as well as spare parts and replacement engines for 10 years, complete armament package, and support infrastructure (including construction of the Khatami Air Base near Esfahan).
The first F-14 arrived in January 1976, modified only by the removal of classified avionics components, but fitted with the TF-30-414 engines. The following year 12 more were delivered. Meanwhile, training of the first groups of Iranian crews by the U.S. Navy, was underway in the USA; and one of these conducted a successful shoot-down with a Phoenix missile of a target drone flying at 50,000 ft (15 km).
Following the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, the air force was renamed the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) and the post-revolution interim government of Iran canceled most Western arms orders. In 1980, an Iranian F-14 shot down an Iraqi Mil Mi-25 helicopter for its first air-to-air kill during the Iran–Iraq War.[56]
According to research by Tom Cooper, within the first six months of the war Iranian F-14s scored over 50 air-to-air victories, mainly against Iraqi MiG-21s and MiG-23s, but some also against Su-20s/22s. In exchange, one F-14A was lost to a MiG-21.[56]
Between 1982 and 1986 Iranian Tomcats were to see use in a series of slowly developing campaigns: mainly tasked with patrolling the skies over objects vital for the survival of Iranian regime and economy, like Tehran or Kharg Island. Most of these patrols were supported by Boeing 707-3J9C tankers, and some lasted as long as 10 hours with up to four in-flight refuelings. Time and again, they were involved in new air battles, and performed well but their main role was intimidating the Iraqi Air Force. Cognizant of previous heavy losses in battles against Iranian F-14s, the Iraqis avoided any engagement with them, so that the sole presence of a Tomcat over the target area was enough to force Iraqi formations to abort their attacks. Because of this, and because of the precision and effectiveness of the Tomcat's AWG-9 weapons system and AIM-54A Phoenix long-range air-to-air missiles, the F-14 maintained air control over a lengthy period of time.[citation needed]
By 1987, the Iraqis had suffered such heavy losses to Iranian Tomcats that they were forced to find a solution with which they could engage them under equal circumstances.
Overall, Tom Cooper claims that Iranian F-14s shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft during the Iran-Iraq War, which include 58 MiG-23s, 23 MiG-21s, nine MiG-25s, 33 Dassault Mirage F1s, 23 Su-17s, one Mil Mi-24, five Tu-22s, two MiG-27s, one Dassault Mirage 5, one B-6D, one Aérospatiale Super Frelon, and two unknown aircraft.

THE WAR TAPES
(2006 Iraq War Documentary)
The War Tapes is the first documentary film of the 2003 invasion of Iraq to be produced by the soldiers themselves. The film (released commercially in 2006) follows three New Hampshire National Guard soldiers before, during, and after their deployment to Iraq about a year after the invasion. Their unit was Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain), which deployed from March 2004 to February 2005.
The three soldiers with cameras featured in the film are SPC Michael Moriarty who signed up in a burst of patriotism after 9/11 and asked to be shipped to Iraq. His colleagues are SGT Stephen Pink, who joined the National Guard to help pay for college, and SGT Zack Bazzi. Two other soldiers, SGT Duncan Domey and SPC Brandon Wilkins, also filmed their entire deployments for the film. In all, 17 soldiers were given cameras and recorded 800 hours of tape in Iraq. Stateside interviews with the soldiers and their families made up an additional 200 hours of tape. The "cast" was narrowed to three soldiers for the final feature length film. They were chosen in part because they were seen by the director and producers as the "main characters".
The film won the prize for Best International Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in May 2006 and also Best International Documentary at BRITDOC in July 2006. The documentary was released for sale on DVD May 15, 2007. Moreover, it is possibly the most innovative result of the embedded reporter program. In this case the reporter did not go to Iraq, but provided cameras to the soldiers, and provided direction on filming to them via instant messaging and email.

MP David Davis wants legal support curb in Iraq war inquiry
A limit should be placed on the taxpayer-funded legal support available to individuals criticised by the Iraq war inquiry to speed up the publication of the final report, a Conservative MP said.
David Davis, a leading critic of the failure to publish the conclusions of Sir John Chilcot's probe six years after it was commissioned, said the cost to the public was ridiculous.
Families of those who died in the controversial 2003 military action are preparing legal action over the failure to set any timetable for the release of the conclusions.
Sir John said this week that the last responses to the "Maxwellisation" process - a consultation of all

The Comment - How US uses Daesh to engage Iraq, Syria
The US and its allies claim they are fighting against terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria such as Daesh.
However, many analysts argue that the US is using Daesh to create constant regional fear, instability and therefore susceptibility to occupation and control. Meanwhile, many reports claim that Western-backed air raids mostly kill Kurdish militants who are fighting Daesh.
In this episode of Comment, we are going to ask our viewers about the alleged US war on Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (abbreviated ISIL or ISIS, , also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or the Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham,or simply Islamic State (IS), is a Salafi jihadist extremist militant group and self-proclaimed Islamic state and caliphate led by Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of March 2015, it has control over territory occupied by ten million people in Iraq and Syria, as well as limited territorial control in Libya and Nigeria. The group also operates or has affiliates in other parts of the world including South Asia.
The group is known in Arabic as ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī 'l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām, leading to the acronym Da'ish, Da'eesh, or DAESH (داعش, Arabic pronunciation: the Arabic equivalent of "ISIL" On 29 June 2014, the group proclaimed itself to be a worldwide caliphate, with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi being named its caliph, and renamed itself "Islamic State" (الدولة الإسلامية, ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah). As a caliphate, it claims religious, political and military authority over all Muslims worldwide, and that "the legality of all emirates, groups, states, and organisations, becomes null by the expansion of the khilāfah's [caliphate's] authority and arrival of its troops to their areas".
The United Nations has held ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes, and Amnesty International has reported ethnic cleansing by the group on a "historic scale". The group has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the United Nations, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other governments. Over 60 countries are directly or indirectly waging war against ISIL.
The group originated as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, which pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda in 2004. The group participated in the Iraqi insurgency, which had followed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by Western forces. In January 2006, it joined other Sunni insurgent groups to form the Mujahideen Shura Council, which proclaimed the formation of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in October 2006. After the Syrian Civil War began in March 2011, the ISI, under the leadership of al-Baghdadi, sent delegates into Syria in August 2011. These fighters named themselves Jabhat an-Nuṣrah li-Ahli ash-Shām—al-Nusra Front—and established a large presence in Sunni-majority areas of Syria, within the governorates of Ar-Raqqah, Idlib, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo. In April 2013, al-Baghdadi announced the merger of the ISI with al-Nusra Front and that the name of the reunited group was now the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). However, Abu Mohammad al-Julani and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leaders of al-Nusra and al-Qaeda respectively, rejected the merger. After an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIL on 3 February 2014, citing its failure to consult and "notorious intransigence". In Syria, the group has conducted ground attacks on both government forces and rebel factions in the Syrian Civil War. The group gained prominence after it drove Iraqi government forces out of key cities in western Iraq in an offensive initiated in early 2014. Iraq's territorial loss almost caused a collapse of the Iraqi government and prompted renewal of US military action in Iraq.
ISIL is known for its well-funded web and social media propaganda, which includes Internet videos of beheadings of soldiers, civilians, journalists and aid workers, and for its destruction of cultural heritage sites. Muslim leaders around the world have condemned ISIL's ideology and actions, arguing that the group has swayed from the path of true Islam and that its actions do not reflect the religion's true teachings or virtues. The group's adoption of the name "Islamic State" and idea of a caliphate have been widely criticised, with the United Nations, various governments, and mainstream Muslim groups rejecting both.
The military of ISIL is the fighting force of the rebel group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The total force size has been estimated from tens of thousands to over two hundred thousand. ISIL's armed forces grew quickly during 2014. The ISIL military, including groups incorporated into it in 2014, openly operates and controls territory in Iraq, Syria, multiple cities in Libya, and Nigeria. It also has made border clashes and incursions into Lebanon, Iran, and Jordan. ISIL-linked groups operate in Algeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and in West Africa (Cameroon, Niger, and Chad). In January 2015, ISIL was also confirmed to have a military presence in Afghanistan and in Yemen.
Sir John said this week that the last responses to the "Maxwellisation" process - a consultation of all those facing criticism - were due "shortly" but defied pressure to set a date.
The chairman said he understood the "anguish" of those who lost loved ones in the conflict but argued that the probe was "unprecedented" in its scope.
Crispin Blunt, who chairs the Commons foreign affairs select committee, has warned that setting a deadline could "wreck" the inquiry.

Corbyn Will Apologise For Iraq War If He Wins 360p
The US and its allies claim they are fighting against terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria such as Daesh.
However, many analysts argue that the US is using Daesh to create constant regional fear, instability and therefore susceptibility to occupation and control. Meanwhile, many reports claim that Western-backed air raids mostly kill Kurdish militants who are fighting Daesh.
In this episode of Comment, we are going to ask our viewers about the alleged US war on Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

The protracted war between these neighboring Middle Eastern countries resulted in at least half a million casualties and several billion dollars' worth of damages, but no real gains by other side. Started by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980, the war was marked by indiscriminate ballistic-missile attacks, extensive use of chemical weapons and attacks on third-country oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Although Iraq was forced on the strategic defensive, Iran was unable to reconstitute effective armored formations for its air force and could not penetrate Iraq's borders deeply enough to achieve decisive results. The end came in July

The Iraq Battle was a protracted armed conflict that began with the 2003 infiltration of Iraq led by the Usa. The invasion fell the federal government of Saddam Hussein. The problem, nevertheless, proceeded for much of the next decade as a revolt surfaced to resist the occupying pressures as well as the post-invasion Iraqi government. The United States officially withdrew from the country in 2011, yet the insurgency and different measurements of the civil armed dispute proceed.

The end came in July 1988 with the acceptance UN Resolution 598.
During the eight years between Iraq's formal declaration of war on September 22, 1980, and Iran's acceptance of a cease-fire with effect on July 20, 1988, at the very least half a million and possibly twice as many troops were killed on both sides, at least half a million became permanent invalids, some 228 billion dollars were directly expended, and more than 400 billion dollars of damage (mostly to oil facilities, but also to cities) was inflicted, mostly by artillery barrages. Aside from that, the war was inconsequential: having won Iranian recognition of exclusive Iraqi sovereignty over the Shatt-el-Arab River (into which the Tigris and Euphrates combine, forming Iraq's best outlet to the sea), in 1988 Saddam Hussein surrendered that gain when in need of Iran's neutrality in anticipation of the 1991 Gulf War.
Three things distinguish the Iran-Iraq War. First, it was inordinately protracted, lasting longer than either world war, essentially because Iran did not want to end it, while Iraq could not. Second, it was sharply asymmetrical in the means employed by each side, because though both sides exported oil and purchased military imports throughout, Iraq was further subsidized and supported by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, allowing it to acquire advanced weapons and expertise on a much larger scale than Iran. Third, it included three modes of warfare absent in all previous wars since 1945: indiscriminate ballistic-missile attacks on cities by both sides, but mostly by Iraq; the extensive use of chemical weapons (mostly by Iraq); and some 520 attacks on third-country oil tankers in the Persian Gulf-for which Iraq employed mostly manned aircraft with antishipping missiles against tankers lifting oil from Iran's terminals, while Iran used mines, gunboats, shore-launched missiles, and helicopters against tankers lifting oil from the terminals of Iraq's Arab backers.
When Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq, quite deliberately started the war, he miscalculated on two counts: first, in attacking a country greatly disorganized by revolution but also greatly energized by it-and whose regime could be consolidated only by a long "patriotic" war, as with all revolutionary regimes; and second, at the level of theater strategy, in launching a surprise invasion against a very large country whose strategic depth he was not even trying to penetrate. Had Iran been given ample warning, it would have mobilized its forces to defend its borderlands; that would have made the Iraqi invasion much more difficult, but in the process the bulk of Iranian forces might have been defeated, possibly forcing Iran to accept a cease-fire on Iraqi terms. As it was, the initial Iraqi offensive thrusts landed in the void, encountering only weak border units before reaching their logistical limits. At that point, Iran had only just started to mobilize in earnest.

Dessert Storm Tools of War | Iraq War Ground Assault | Military Documentary Film.
The intrusion started on 20 March 2003. The united state, signed up with by the Uk as well as numerous coalition allies, introduced a "shock and also admiration" surprise attack without proclaiming war. Iraqi pressures were promptly bewildered as UNITED STATE pressures swept through the nation. The intrusion led to the failure of the Ba'athist federal government; Saddam was captured in December 2003 and executed by a military court 3 years later on. Nevertheless, the operate vacuum complying with Saddam's demise and the mismanagement of the line of work caused prevalent sectarian violence between Shias as well as Sunnis as well as a prolonged revolt versus U.S. and union forces. The United States responded with a troop rise in 2007, identified as the COIN approach; the hefty American safety and security visibility and also offers made in between the occupying forces and Sunni militias decreased the level of violence. The united state began withdrawing its soldiers in the winter season of 2007-- 2008. The winding down of U.S. participation in Iraq sped up under Head of state Barack Obama. The united state formally took out all battle soldiers from Iraq by December 2011.
The Bush Management based its rationale for war mostly on the assertion that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and that Saddam's government presented a prompt hazard to the Usa as well as its coalition allies. Select UNITED STATE officials charged Saddam of harboring as well as assisting al-Qaeda, while others mentioned the desire to finish a repressive tyranny and also bring democracy to the people of Iraq. After the intrusion, no substantial evidence was located to validate the initial cases concerning WMDs. The rationale and also misrepresentation of pre-war intelligence encountered heavy criticism within the united state as well as globally.
As a result of the battle, Iraq held multi-party elections in 2005. Nouri al-Maliki came to be Prime Minister in 2006 and also continued to be in office till 2014. The Maliki federal government passed plans that were commonly viewed as having the impact of estranging the nation's Sunni minority, getting worse sectarian strains. In the summertime of 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) introduced a military aggression in Northern Iraq and also declared a worldwide Islamic caliphate, generating one more army feedback from the Usa and also its allies. The Iraq War induced hundreds of hundreds of civilian and army casualties (see price quotes here). Most of victims took place as a result of the insurgency and also civil disputes between 2004 as well as 2007.

Seven months after war was declared over, journalist Sean Langan arrived in Iraq. He spent three months living in the notorious Sunni triangle, deftly moving between resistance fighters and the American troops. Travelling where few journalists dare to go and filming alone, the producer has captured a rare grassroots view of the war still raging across Iraq.

UN Security Council condemns use of sexual violence in Iraq, Syria
The United Nations Security Council has condemned the use of sexual violence as a war tactic in Syria and Iraq.
In a statement, Council members have stated that all forms of sexual violence in armed conflict are war crimes and constitute grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions. The Council urged all parties to armed conflict to take all feasible steps to protect civilians from such abhorrent acts. Thousands of women and girls have been raped, forced into marriage or sold as sex slaves by Daesh Takfiri terrorists in Iraq and Syria. Daesh runs frequent sex slave markets in areas under its control. Many of its victims are from the Izadi Kurdish community.

The War Between Iran and Iraq
The War Between Iran and Iraq
