The Alps (German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; French: Alpes; Occitan: Aups/Alps; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, France and Monaco in the west.
The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,810.45 m (15,782 ft), on the Italian–French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.
The English name Alps was taken via French from Latin Alpes, which formerly was believed to be ultimately cognate with Latin albus ("white"). Few scholars share this opinion today. The German Albe, Alpe or Alp (f., Old High German alpâ, plural alpûn), the Occitan Alp/Aup and the French Alpage or Alpe in the singular mean "alpine pasture", and only in the plural may also refer to the mountain range as a whole.
Another theory says that Lat. Alpes is a name of non-Indo-European origin (which is common for prominent mountains and mountain ranges in the Mediterranean region). According to the OED, Lat. Alpes might possibly derive from a pre-Indo-European word *alb "hill", with Albania being a related derivation. Interestingly, Albania (which is a foreign name for modern Albanians) has been used as a name for a number of mountainous areas across Europe. In Roman times, Albania was a name for the eastern Caucasus, while in the English language Albania (or Albany) was occasionally used as a name for Scotland.

If Heidi is alive, she's in this sky-high corner of the Swiss Alps, with cowbells ringing on breathtaking ridges. After settling into a traditional village where locals scythe hay by hand, we hike and bike. We blast an alphorn, get sprayed by waterfalls raging deep inside a mountain, and munch muesli for breakfast at 10,000 feet. For a finale, we ride Europe's highest railway up the mighty Jungfrau for hot cocoa, glacier sledding, and oh-wow views.

The History of the Alps Mountains

Important geological concepts were established as naturalists began studying the rock formations of the Alps in the 18th century. In the mid-19th century the now defunct theory of geosynclines was used to explain the presence of "folded" mountain chains but by the mid-20th century the theory of plate tectonics became widely accepted.
The formation of the Alps (the Alpine orogeny) was an episodic process that began about 300 million years ago.[18] In the Paleozoic Era the Pangaean supercontinent consisted of a single tectonic plate; it broke into separate plates during the Mesozoic Era and the Tethys sea developed between Laurasia and Gondwana during the Jurassic Period. The Tethys was later squeezed between colliding plates causing the formation of mountain ranges called the Alpide belt, from Gibraltar through the Himalayas to Indonesia—a process that began at the end of the Mesozoic and continues into the present. The formation of the Alps was a segment of this orogenic process, caused by the collision between the African and the Eurasian plates that began in the late Cretaceous Period.
Under extreme compressive stresses and pressure, marine sedimentary rocks were uplifted, creating characteristic recumbent folds, or nappes, and thrust faults. As the rising peaks underwent erosion, a layer of marine flysch sediments was deposited in the foreland basin, and the sediments became involved in younger nappes (folds) as the orogeny progressed. Coarse sediments from the continual uplift and erosion were later deposited in foreland areas as molasse. The molasse regions in Switzerland and Bavaria were well-developed and saw further upthrusting of flysch.

Without question, one of the biggest discoveries on https://www.triplejunearthed.com this year has been Vallis Alps.
In January 2015, the duo, then based in Canberra and Seattle, uploaded their tracks ‘Young’ and ‘Thru’ to triple j Unearthed. We were blown away by both the maturity of their songwriting and the rich textures of production, and they quickly became a triple j Unearthed Feature Artist.
Since then they’ve become one of the most streamed and downloaded artists on Unearthed this year, as well as tallying up more than 10 million plays of their debut EP online.
Then came the tricky part… they were booked for their first ever show and had to work out how to take their transcontinental partnership out of their bedrooms on opposite sides of the world, and onto the big stage for Splendour in the Grass.
5 weeks ago, David flew in from Seattle and Parissa drove up from Canberra to start their life as a ‘proper band’ in Sydney. Those early rehearsals, captured by triple j Unearthed, were the first time the pair had been in the same room together since November 2013.

The Alpine Zoo in Innsbruck is unique in many ways. Situated at 750 metres above sea level, it is regarded as Europe’s highest-altitude zoo. It covers approximately 4 hectares and, with 150 different species, is home to the world’s most complete collection of alpine animals. This makes it purely a themed zoo, where only animals from the alpine area are kept and displayed – there are no lions, elephants or giraffes here. The film concentrates above all on the zoo’s dedicated and highly specialised breeding and resettlement projects. Absolute rarities that worldwide are only kept in the Tyrolean alpine zoo are also presented. The documentary shows in an entertaining way how fascinating Austria’s nature, its exploration and preservation area.

It's still there because of its adaptability; when hunters intruded into their habitat and pushed them further back in the forest, the reed deer survived. This film will focus on the difference between the commonly confused red deer and roe and portrays the surrounding animal world of the red deer. It will also show dangers the deer is exposed to due to the reappearance of wolves and bears and an overbearing human presence.

The History of the Alps Mountains
The History of the Alps Mountains
Important geological concepts were established as naturalists began studying the rock formations of the Alps in the 18th century. In the mid-19th century the now defunct theory of geosynclines was used to explain the presence of "folded" mountain chains but by the mid-20th century the theory of plate tectonics became widely accepted. The formation of the Alps (the Alpine orogeny) was an episodic process that began about 300 million years ago.[18] In the Paleozoic Era the Pangaean supercontinent consisted of a single tectonic plate; it broke into separate plates during the Mesozoic Era and the Tethys sea developed between Laurasia and Gondwana during the Jurassic Period. The Tethys was later squeezed between colliding plates causing the formation of mountain ranges called the Alpide belt, from Gibraltar through the Himalayas to Indonesia—a process that began at the end of the Mesozoic and continues into the present. The formation of the Alps was a segment of this orogenic process, caused by the collision between the African and the Eurasian plates that began in the late Cretaceous Period. Under extreme compressive stresses and pressure, marine sedimentary rocks were uplifted, creating characteristic recumbent folds, or nappes, and thrust faults. As the rising peaks underwent erosion, a layer of marine flysch sediments was deposited in the foreland basin, and the sediments became involved in younger nappes (folds) as the orogeny progressed. Coarse sediments from the continual uplift and erosion were later deposited in foreland areas as molasse. The molasse regions in Switzerland and Bavaria were well-developed and saw further upthrusting of flysch.- published: 15 Feb 2015
