"Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)" is a dance song by British production duo M&S as part of their musical project The Girl Next Door. Released on London Records in April 2001, the song peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart and number 21 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Background

M&S, using the name M&S Presents The Girl Next Door, collaborated on "Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)" with Natasha Bryce, who provided vocals on the track. Bryce, a former model who was later cast in the 1997 film The Fifth Element, was recruited by M&S because, according to Daily Record writer John Dingwall, the duo "decided to get a female singer along to give the track a commercial edge." The song contains samples of Double Exposure's "Everyman" and Loleatta Holloway's "Hit and Run".

Release and reception

"Salsoul Nugget (If U Wanna)" was a white label hit in early 2000; the single was re-released on London Records in 2001. It peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance Chart. It also reached number 47 in Italy and number 21 on the U.S. dance chart.Music Week called the track "infectious" and that it was "boosted" by Bryce's vocals. Emily Sheffield of the London Evening Standard compared the song to "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)", a 2000 hit by Spiller featuring Sophie Ellis-Bextor. "It's the same set-up - two guys with a nice tune (Ricky Morrison and Fran Sidoli) hook up with model/singer (Natasha) - and it works." An April 2001 Billboard article also noted the similarity to "Groovejet" while adding that Bryce "effortlessly wraps her lips around Ricky Morrison and Fran Sidoli's bubbly yet rugged Double Exposure-sampling production."

Salsoul Records is a New York City based record label, founded by three brothers, Joseph Cayre, Kenneth Cayre, and Stanley Cayre (the Cayre brothers). Salsoul issued about 300 singles, including many disco 12-inch releases, and a string of albums in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The label started in business in 1974, went defunct in 1985 and was relaunched in 1992. Artists such as The Salsoul Orchestra (led by Vincent Montana Jr), Instant Funk, Loleatta Holloway, Double Exposure, First Choice, Joe Bataan, Skyy, Carol Williams, Jocelyn Brown, Inner Life and Charo were at one time part of their roster.

Bethlehem Music Company's catalogs, which included Salsoul Records, Bethlehem Records (a jazz label) and others, were licensed by Verse music group from 2010 for five years, before Verse's catalogs were bought out by BMG's rights division in 2015.

History

The Cayre family had been involved in many entrepreneurial ventures before they stumbled upon manufacturing and distribution of 8-track tapes, which included Bethlehem Records, in the early 1970s. They had purchased some catalogs of Mexican music (mostly in the Mericana genre) to distribute, and inadvertently infringed the copyrights of CBS Records and RCA Records by selling them in the United States. They mended fences with the major labels, and even acquired a sole license for North American distribution for some of CBS Latino catalog. This led to recording sessions, involving Bataan, that were distributed by CBS. When the major label was unable to further market the music profitably, the rights reverted to the Cayres and they were up and running in the record business proper.

Australian Gold Nugget

The Australian Gold Nugget is a gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint. The coins have been minted in denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg of 24 carat gold. They have legal tender status in Australia and are one of few legal tender bullion gold coins to change their design every year, another being the Chinese Gold Panda. This and their limited annual mintage may, unlike for many other bullion coins, raise their numismatic value over the value of gold used.

The Gold Nugget series was introduced in 1986 by Gold Corporation, a company wholly owned by the government of Western Australia, more commonly known by its trading name The Perth Mint. This issue of coins had two unique features: a "two-tone" frosted design effect, and individual hard plastic encapsulation of each coin. These features were unusual for a standard bullion coin and gave the Nugget a unique market niche.

From 1986 to 1989, the reverse of these coins pictured various Australian gold nuggets. With the 1989 proof edition, the design was changed to feature different kangaroos, a more world-recognised symbol of Australia. The coins are today sometimes referred to as "gold kangaroos".

Shakugan no Shana

Shakugan no Shana (灼眼のシャナ, lit. Burning-Eyed Shana), also known simply as Shana (シャナ), is a Japanese light novel series written by Yashichiro Takahashi with illustrations by Noizi Ito. ASCII Media Works published 26 novels from November 2002 to November 2012 under their Dengeki Bunko imprint. The story focuses on Yuji Sakai, a high school boy who inadvertently becomes involved in an age-old conflict between forces of balance and imbalance in existence. In the process, he befriends a fighter for the balancing force and names her "Shana". The series incorporates fantasy and slice of life elements into its tale.

Two manga adaptations were published by ASCII Media Works in Dengeki Daioh and Dengeki Maoh. Between 2005 and 2012, the series was adapted by J.C.Staff into three 24-episode anime television series, a four-episode original video animation (OVA) series, an animated film and an additional stand alone OVA episode. A PlayStation 2 video game was released in March 2006, and it was ported to the Nintendo DS in March 2007. Viz Media licensed the novels and the first manga series for release in North America, but stopped publishing both prematurely. Geneon originally licensed the first television series for release in North America, but the license later transferred to Funimation, who also licensed the remaining anime properties. Critics praised the series for its execution of typical story elements and how it continuously becomes better over time. However, the series is described as having issues with pacing.

The Legend of Dragoon

The Legend of Dragoon is a role-playing video game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It was released in Japan on December 2, 1999, in North America on June 11, 2000, and on January 19, 2001 in Europe.

Despite mixed critical reception, the game has amassed a very large fanbase following, including several online petitions for a remake or prequel/sequel. The game was rereleased on PlayStation Network in Japan on December 22, 2010 and in North America on May 1, 2012.

Gameplay

The Legend of Dragoon features three modes of play: the field map, a battle mode, and an overworld map. The field map is used whenever the player enters a town, dungeon, or landmark. It consists of a pre-rendered background image overlaid with real-time 3D character models and animated effects, such as the movement of water or light shafts. Battle mode is a real-time 3D environment that resembles the current field map. Turn-based battles occur between playable characters and CPU-controlled enemies. Standard actions such as attack, defend, item and escape are present. The world map is used when the player moves between towns or other geographical locations. The World Map doesn't allow for free movement, and instead the player follows a guided path between destinations.
