Wide of leaders on stage STORYLINE: The leaders of ten Asian nations convened in Thailand on Saturday for the official opening of the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Preceded by two days of preliminary meetings, the summit officially opened in the resort town of Cha-Am, 120 miles (200 kilometres) south of the capital Bangkok, with a ceremony marked by the international debut of ASEAN's new anthem, "The ASEAN Way." In his opening address Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, stressed that "ASEAN will put people first - in its vision, in its policies, and in its action plans." But two hours earlier, civil society representatives from Myanmar and Cambodia were barred from a scheduled meeting with the bloc's leaders, delegates said. Khin Ohnmar, one of the Myanmar representatives, is a prominent activist who was awarded Sweden's Anna Lindh human rights prize last year. The activist said she was informed that if any Myanmar representative attended the meeting it would be cancelled. The rare, 30-minute interface between other civil society representatives and the ASEAN leaders went ahead without the Myanmar and Cambodian delegates who were invited to meet later with the Thai prime minister. Speaking outside after the meeting, Debbie Stothard, a representative of ALTSEAN (Alternative Asean Network) Burma, said that if those governments could not "bear to be in the same room as civil society from their countries, it's a very clear indication of what they are doing to their own people in their own countries."
