Contemporary dance emerged in the 1950s as the dance form that is combining the modern dance elements and the classical ballet elements. It can use elements from non-western dance cultures, such as African dancing with bent knees as a characteristic trait, and Butoh, Japanese contemporary dancing that developed in the 1950s.
It used to describe also the dance which is not classical jazz nor traditional folk/cultural dance.[citation needed] Sub-genres include non-dance, conceptual dance and pedestrian contemporary.[citation needed]
Whereas Postmodern dance was a direct and opposite response to Modern dance, Contemporary dance draws on both modern and postmodern dance as a source of inspiration. The concern with social problems and the condition of human spirit is still expressed, but the issues that are presented would have appalled many early modern dancers.
In April 1944, Merce Cunningham accompanied his dance with music that was composed and performed by John Cage who said that Cunningham's dance "no longer relies on linear elements (...) nor does it rely on a movement towards and away from climax. As in abstract painting, it is assumed that an element (a movement, a sound, a change of light) is in an of itself expressive; what it communicates is in large part determined by the observer himself.” Cunningham continued to showcase his work until 1953, when he formed Merce Cunningham Dance Company the Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Initially a student of Martha Graham and a soloist in her company, he is considered the first choreographer to “develop an independent attitude towards modern dance” and defy the ideas that were established by it. Cunningham made over one hundred and fifty works for his dance company.

Tie it is the second part of the full evening dance performance Urban Tales. Tie takes its inspiration from the novel "I called him Necktie", written by Milena Michiko Flašar.
A thought of Ivan Cankar "a man must be alone in order to know others", in the urban society it makes difficulty to find its place. Even in the shelter of their own rooms, an individual it is faced with memories, dreams, frustrations, relationships pieces, fragments of happiness. Solitude gets overflow with loneliness, fantasy replaces real contact. Random meeting in the park confronts individual with the society, with multitude of pressures, system, authority, where at the same time the society gives the individual the opportunity to find friendships, love and living new stories.
