Joseon (Hangul: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮; July 1392 – October 1897) (also Chosŏn, Choson, Chosun), was a Korean state founded by Taejo Yi Seong-gye that lasted for approximately five centuries. It was founded in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Goryeo at what is today the city of Kaesong. Early on, Korea was retitled and the capital was relocated to modern-day Seoul. The kingdom's northernmost borders were expanded to the natural boundaries at the Amnok and Duman rivers through the subjugation of the Jurchens. Joseon was the last dynasty of Korean history and the longest-ruling Confucian dynasty.
During its reign, Joseon consolidated its absolute rule over Korea, encouraged the entrenchment of Korean Confucian ideals and doctrines in Korean society, imported and adapted Chinese culture, and saw the height of classical Korean culture, trade, science, literature, and technology. However, the dynasty was severely weakened during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, when invasions by the neighboring Japan and Qing nearly overran the peninsula, leading to an increasingly harsh isolationist policy for which the country became known as the Hermit Kingdom. After invasions from Manchuria, Joseon experienced a nearly 200-year period of peace.

Namisum is a tiny half-moon shaped island located in Chuncheon, South Korea, formed as it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River as the result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam (청평댐) in 1944. Its name originated from General Nami (남이장군),[1] who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused of treason during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Although his grave wasn't discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. It was believed that if someone took even one stone

Next time you visit downtown Seoul, Korea, make sure you pay a visit to Cheonggyecheon Stream.
You won’t have to look hard to find it, as this lovely waterway runs through just over 6 miles of Seoul. The stream has quite a history; it existed centuries ago during the Joseon Dynasty, but was concealed by infrastructure in the 1950s. In 2003, as part of Seoul’s ongoing beautification and upgrade efforts, the freeway that concealed the Cheonggyecheon Stream was removed.
Today, no matter what part of Seoul you tour, Cheonggyecheon Stream and the unique, burbling sound the rushing water makes is sure to play a part. The city has created several parks where you can sit and enjoy a picnic next to the stream; additionally, it passes under more than 20 bridges as it moves through the many skyscrapers of modern Seoul. There are also numerous sculptures and other art installations scattered around Cheonggsecheon Stream, making the perfect backdrop for your photographs.
Don’t forget to cross over Gwantonggyo Bridge, a prominent fixture of Cheonggyecheon Stream sightseeing tours. This legendary bridge was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty, but was buried underground for decades as Korea sought to modernize itself. Thanks to a recent restoration, residents and visitors can once again cross this ancient structure.
What was most fascinating to you as you walked along the Cheonggsecheon Stream?

Travel video about destination South-Korea.
South Korea is a land of ancient tradition and contemporary life, a fascinating world…with five thousand years of history. Seoul is the country’s economic and cultural centre, a metropolis of twelve million inhabitants who are proud of their ancient culture. The War Museum is a reminder of the Forgotten War when the United States of America and twenty other countries took part in a United Nations military operation to support South Korea against the forces North Korea and China. Thirty kilometres south of Seoul is the fortress town of Suwon where at the end of the eighteenth century the Hwaseong Fortress was built, now a World Heritage Sight. South Korea’s most famous monastery is located in the Gaya-San National Park. Today the complex and its ninety buildings have become one of the main Buddhist centres in the East.. Tumuli Park is situated in the centre of Kyong Ju, former capital of the Silla Kingdom and contains twenty three royal tombs that look from the outside like large green hills. A huge number of valuable finds were made here thus the National Museum was created in which more than a hundred and fifty thousand exhibits from prehistoric times right up to the Joseon Dynasty are on display. Jeju island is a unique holiday paradise, a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tea plantations and several leisure facilities. For Koreans as well as the Japanese, Jeju Island has, due to its tropical climate, become a very popular honeymoon destination. When during dinner a volcano erupts and laser gods battle against each other, the Korean people are reminded of the fact that they have withstood invasion by the Mongols, Chinese and Japanese. At the climax of the show a fiery dragon appears: his sole task to protect glorious South Korea!

South Korea Travel Video Guide: South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea is a country in East Asia. South Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea to the north, China across the sea to the west and Japan a short ferry ride to the southeast.
Archeological finds of prehistoric toolmaking on the Korean Peninsula date back to 70,000 BC, and the first pottery is found around 8000 BC. Comb-pattern pottery culture peaked around 3500-2000 BC.
Legend has it that Korea began with the founding of Gojoseon (also called Ancient Chosun) by the legendary Dangun in 2333 BC. Archeological and contemporaneous written records of Gojoseon as a kingdom date back to around 7th-4th century BC. Gojoseon was eventually defeated by the Chinese Han Dynasty and its territories were governed by four Chinese commanderies. The political chaos following the fall of the Han Dynasty in China allowed native tribes to regain control of Korea and led to the emergence of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Baekje. Despite repeated attempts by China, namely the Sui Dynasty and later the Tang Dynasty, to conquer the Korean Peninsula, northern-based Goguryeo managed to repel them. Eventually, Goguryeo fell to a Silla-Tang alliance, which had earlier defeated Baekje. This unified Korea under the Silla dynasty. Even though Tang later invaded, Silla forces managed to drive them out, thus maintaining Korea's independence.
Unified Silla was replaced by the Goryeo (also called Koryo) dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. One highlight of the Goryeo dynasty was that in 1234 the world's first metal movable type was invented by a Korean named Choe Yun-ui (200 years before Gutenberg's printing press). Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon (also called Chosun) dynasty, after a coup by one of its generals. The Joseon dynasty ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, being one of the longest actively ruling dynasties in world history. It was during the early part of the Joseon dynasty that Korean technological inventions such as the world's first water clock, ironclad ship, and other innovations took place. During the rule of King Sejong the Great, the world's first rain gauge was invented and the Korean alphabet known as hangul was created.

When you arrive in Deoksugung Palace, you’re leaving the busy streets of Seoul, Korea, and entering a tranquil world defined by ancient tradition. The palace has long been a fixture for locals and visitors alike, thanks to its extraordinary architecture, rich history, and colorful guardsmen.
A tour of Deoksugung Palace will reveal its origins. Built during the Joseon Dynasty, Deoksugung Palace did not actually start out as a proper palace. It was originally constructed as the residence of a royal relative, but in 1592 it became a haven for King Seonju after all his other palaces in Seoul were destroyed by the Japanese. Over the centuries, Deoksugung Palace has been inhabited sporadically; starting in the 1600s, it was largely abandoned until 1897, when it was again utilized full-time by the royal family.
A major part of Deoksugung Palace sightseeing is the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. Guards glad in brilliant gold and purple uniforms perform this ceremony as they switch shifts three times a day. This coincides with the opening and shutting of the Daehanmun Gate, and is also accompanied by performances on musical instruments. Once the Changing of the Guard Ceremony is complete, guards will often pose for photographs with visitors, so make sure you’ve got your camera handy.

Moments in Seoul: Travel and Shopping Guide (Petite France, Nami Island, Seoul)
Namisum is a tiny half-moon shaped island located in Chuncheon, South Korea, formed as it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River as the result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam (청평댐) in 1944. Its name originated from General Nami (남이장군),[1] who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused of treason during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Although his grave wasn't discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. It was believed that if someone took even one stone from there, it would bring misfortune to their house. A tour company arranged the grave with soil and then developed Namisum into an amusement park.
