STORYLINE:
On his second day in Washington DC, the president of the Dominican Republic continued to promote his case for a trade agreement with the United States.
President Hipolito Mejia said he is hoping to further his efforts to negotiate a free-trade agreement between the Dominican Republic and the US.
Mejia held talks with US President George W. Bush on Tuesday on the subject.
In an interview with Associated Press, Mejia said he hoped his country would be part of the free trade agreement by the end of the year.
The Dominican president met Bush in July 2002 to discuss his country's possible inclusion in free-trade negotiations between Central American countries and the United States.
Since then, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador have supported the Dominican Republic's inclusion and officials said earlier this year that the US would consider including Dominican Republic in negotiations of what is better know as the CAFTA deal.
The Dominican Republic is the US' largest Caribbean trading partner and the fifth in Latin America, after Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia, according to the Dominican Industry and Commerce Ministry.
Bilateral trade exceeded eight point six (b) billion US dollars (202 (b) billion Dominican pesos) in 2001.
The Dominican Republic was part of Bush's "coalition of the willing" against Iraq, with Mejia's government expressing support for the US after the first strikes on Baghdad.
Bush has made a point recently of saluting partners who stood with him on the war in Iraq, especially those who met with opposition at home.

Adrienne Clarkson profiles Roosevelt ‘Rosie’ Douglas, the Canadian-educated black political activist from Dominica who was deported for his involvement in 1969 student riots at Sir George Williams (now Concordia) University in Montreal. Douglas was the son of a wealthy plantation owner and continued his activism once he returned to Dominica, encouraging the workers on his father’s plantation to unionize and demand wage increases. Douglas organized the Dominica-Cuba friendship coalition and was monitored because of his socialist views. On February 3 2000 he became prime minister of Dominica. He held the office until his sudden death eight months later on October 1, 2000.

Political leaders in the Dominican Republic have pleaded for an end to the violence that has plagued the country's current electoral campaign.
The election, which takes place in 10 days time, has sparked confrontations between rival supporters of the main political parties.
At least five people have been killed in recent clashes.
Rival political supporters exchange gunfire in the backstreets of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
Violence has escalated as the country gears up to presidential elections on May 18th.
The elections are for the Chamber of Deputies, Senators and various positions within local government.
Leaders of all political parties in the Dominican Republic called for a end to the violence during the electoral campaign.
At least five people have been killed.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"We would like to call on the Dominican people, all sectors and political parties: violence does not lead to anything. These kind of actions cause grief to Dominican families, they do not add anything to the debate of the solutions to the country's problems and things like these should not take place."
SUPER CAPTION: Francisco Dominguez, prosecutor
The funeral of a police commander this week killed in the street battles has brought condemnation from all parties.
The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and the Dominican Liberal Party (PLD) are the two main parties in the country.
All five people killed were members of one of the two main parties.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"The PLD (Dominican Liberation Party) must make a strong public call on those who accompany the military to stop this wave of blood caused by the culture of violence."
SUPER CAPTION: Hatuey de Camps, Secretary General Dominican Revolutionary Party
On Tuesday, the president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, called for the conflicts to be ended.
Fernandez said those responsible for the crimes could not justify their actions with political excuses.
But the leader of the opposition party, PRD, Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, has accused the government of promoting intolerance and inciting the violence.
In the meantime the street battles continue.
