New Wave is a subgenre of rock music that emerged in the mid to late 1970s alongside punk rock. The term at first generally was synonymous with punk rock before being considered a genre in its own right that incorporated aspects of electronic and experimental music, mod subculture, disco and 1960s pop music. New Wave, as a term, has been used to describe all post-punk rock music, yet, it distances itself from other post-punk movements as it displays characteristics common to pop music, rather than the more "arty" post-punk.
As a genre, it incorporates much of the original punk rock sound and ethos, such as an emphasis on short and punchy songs, yet it is characterized by greater complexity in both music and lyrics. Common characteristics of New Wave music, aside from its punk influences, include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the importance of styling and the arts, as well as a great amount of diversity. As a term, New Wave is often used to describe music which was quirky and eccentric, yet also catchy and pop at heart, incorporating clear melodious hooks. In such a way, its style varies greatly, ranging from 1950s and 60s rock revivalism, ska and reggae-styled music, to synthpop-oriented dance.

Against Me! is an American punk rock band formed in Naples, Florida in 1997 by singer and guitarist Tom Gabel. Since 2002 the band's lineup has also included guitarist James Bowman and bassist Andrew Seward; current drummer Jay Weinberg joined in 2010. After releasing three studio albums through independent record labels, Against Me! moved to Sire Records for 2007's New Wave, which reached no. 57 on the Billboard 200. Their fifth and most recent album, 2010's White Crosses, was their most successful, reaching no. 34. In 2011 the band launched their own record label, Total Treble Music, through which they plan to release future albums. In 2012 Gabel publicly came out as transgender, with plans to begin a medical process to live as a woman and eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace while continuing to front Against Me!. The first album expected to feature Laura Jane Grace as frontwoman is Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
Against Me! was formed in 1997 by singer/guitarist Tom Gabel as a solo act, occasionally performing with backing musicians. The first Against Me! release was an eponymously-titled 1997 cassette demo. With the addition of drummer Kevin Mahon, a second demo, Vivida Vis! (1998), was released in limited numbers by Misanthrope Records. The band's first EP, Against Me!, was released in 2000 through Crasshole Records. Their first widely-distributed release was the EP Crime as Forgiven by Against Me! (2001), released by Plan-It-X Records and Gabel's own Sabot Productions. A third EP, an eponymously-titled acoustic recording by Gabel and bassist Dustin Fridkin, was released later that year.
[FATHER]
Where have I been?
How did we change,
Caught in this strange
New music?
Say,
Was I away too long?
[MOTHER]
Just like that tune,
Simple and clear,
I've come to hear
New music.
[FATHER]
New music.
Why,
Why can't you hear the song?
[YOUNGER BROTHER]
His fingers stoke those keys,
And every note says 'Please',
And every chord says 'Turn my way.'
[MOTHER, FATHER]
I thought I knew
What love was but these lovers play...
[MOTHER, FATHER, YOUNGER BROTHER]
New music!
Haunting me,
And somehow taunting me-
My love was never half as true.
[FATHER]
And I as myself,
Why can't I sing it too?
[WORKERS, NEIGHBORS]
His fingers stoke those keys,
And every note says 'Please',
And every chord says 'Turn my way.'
[WORKERS, NEIGHBORS, FAMILY]
I thought I knew
What love was
but these lovers play
New music!
[ALL]
Haunting me,
And somehow taunting me-
My love was
Never half as true.
[COALHOUSE]
Sarah, my life has changed.
Sarah, you've got to see.
Sarah, we got a son!
Sarah, come down to me...
[SARAH]
You and your music
Singing deep in me,
Making nice to me,
Saying something so new-
[COALHOUSE]
[SARAH]
Changing everything,
Meaning everything,
[COALHOUSE]
Music
[SARAH]
Calling my heart to you...
[COALHOUSE]
All for you, girl.
You, Sarah.
[SARAH]
Play that melody,
Your sweet melody,
Calling my heart to you.
[COALHOUSE]
You.
[ALL (except Coalhouse & Sarah)]
Just like that tune,
Simple and clear,
I've come to hear
New music-
Breaking my heart,
Op'ning a door,
Chamging the world!
New music!
I'll
Hear it forevermore!
You come from a different world
But one I'd like to get to know
But all the things I want you to see
Are not the things that tell you to show
This thing could be so easy
I don't know why I make it hard
Maybe you will understand me
With some help from my guitar
You're like new music to me
And I just wanna learn you in every key
You're like the perfect melody
And I just wanna learn you in every key
I come from a different world
But one you don't quite understand
But what you sees not always what you get
Don't wanna fight
Who I am, what I am
I'm a man but I'm scared of you
Cause I never met a girl so real
Such a good kind of frear that you're making me feel
When music makes me feel
You're like new music to me
And I just wanna learn you in every key
You're like the perfect melody
And I just wanna learn you in every key
