The meeting was intended mainly to discuss the re-establishment of the nations of war-torn Europe. Within a few years, with the Cold War dividing the continent, Yalta became a subject of intense controversy. To some extent, it has remained controversial.
Yalta was the second of three wartime conferences among the Big Three (Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin). It had been preceded by the Tehran Conference in 1943, and it was followed by the Potsdam Conference in July 1945, which was attended by Harry S Truman, who replaced the late Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill, who was replaced mid-point by the newly elected British Prime Minister Clement Attlee.
Yalta (Ukrainian and Russian: Я́лта, Crimean Tatar: Yalta) is a city in Crimea, southern Ukraine, on the north coast of the Black Sea. The city is located on the site of an ancient Greek colony, said to have been founded by Greek sailors who were looking for a safe shore (γιαλός – yalos in Greek) on which to land. It is situated on a deep bay facing south towards the Black Sea, surrounded by wooded mountains. It enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with many vineyards and orchards in the vicinity.
The term "The Greater Yalta" is used to designate a part of the Crimean southern coast spanning from Foros in the west to Gurzuf in the east and including the city of Yalta and multiple adjacent urban settlements (the area of the Greater Yalta is marked dark blue on the map).
The existence of Yalta was first recorded in the 12th century by an Arab geographer, who described it as a Byzantine port and fishing settlement. It became part of a network of Genoese trading colonies on the Crimean coast in the 14th century, when it was known as Etalita or Galita. Crimea was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1475, which made it a semi-independent subject territory under the rule of the Crimean Khanate but the southern coast with Yalta was under direct ottoman rule forming the Eyalet of Kefe (Feodosiya). Yalta was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1783, along with the rest of Crimea, sparking the Russo-Turkish War, 1787-1792. Prior to the annexation of the Crimea, the Crimean Greeks were moved to Mariupol in 1778; one of the villages they established nearby is also called Yalta.
Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, PC, DL, FRS, Hon. RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British Conservative politician and statesman known for his leadership of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the century, he served as Prime Minister twice (1940–45 and 1951–55). A noted statesman and orator, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and an artist. He is the only British prime minister to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

The Yalta Conference, sometimes called the Crimea Conference and codenamed the Argonaut Conference, held February 4–11, 1945, was the World War II meeting of the heads of government of the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, represented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin, respectively, for the purpose of discussing Europe's post-war reorganization. The conference convened in the Livadia Palace near Yalta in Crimea.
The meeting was intended mainly to discuss the re-establishment of the nations of war-torn Europe. Within a few years, with the Cold War dividing the continent, Yalta became a subject of intense controversy. To some extent, it has remained controversial.
Yalta was the second of three wartime conferences among the Big Three. It had been preceded by the Tehran Conference in 1943, and was followed by the Potsdam Conference in July 1945, which was attended by Stalin, Churchill (who was replaced midpoint by the newly elected British Prime Minister Clement Attlee) and Harry S. Truman, Roosevelt's successor.

Like most trips to Georgia the tour starts in the country’s capital, Tbilisi. Tbilisi is a place with a pretty old town, echoing the cultural and religious crossroads on which it sits. Over the centuries most regional powers – Turks, Arabs, Persians, Crusader knights and Cossack warriors – have ventured this way and all have left their mark. Did you know Tbilisi has been sacked 27 times. But today it’s a lovely, peaceful place to start and end your trip, with ancient churches, mosques, the old sulphur baths for which the town is famed, great restaurants and very good accommodation.
From Tbilisi the tour heads north out of the capital taking a first stop at the UNESCO World Heritage town of Mtskheta. As one of the oldest inhabited towns on earth, Mtskheta is home to one of the country’s most important churches where Christianity was officially adopted as the states religion back in 337AD.
From here we head north up what is known as the Russian Military Highway, passed the Ananuri Cathedral Complex – where, if the weather is right, you might like a swim in the adjoining lake – and on into the mountains. And it’s the mountains that form the real highlight of the trip.
The journey doesn’t take long as we drive over the Pass of the Cross and on to Kazbegi, a pretty little town sitting in the lee of the imposing 5,000m peak that goes by the same name. From here, staying at a recently converted luxury hotel, we walk up to the spectacularly positioned St Gregory’s church to have a look around and admire the views. But its after this that the adventure really begins as we head into the hills for two days walking a camping.
The first day we drive out of Kazbegi in 4x4s and head to the tiny village of Juta. Here we load up the pack horses and walk to the first night’s camping spot, gloriously positioned beneath a might cliff. After an initial climb out the village, the walk is relatively flat and takes about 2 hours meaning we arrive in time for lunch and have the rest of the day free to relax or go on more walks around the camp.
The next morning we leave camp around 8.30, carrying our lunch with us, and head on towards the 3,300 metre high Abudlari Pass. It’s a beautiful walk, across the high meadows, and not that challenging. It takes between 2 to 3 hours to complete and once at the top, the feeling is sensational.
From here we walk along the high ridge, surrounded by the mighty Caucasus Mountains, before walking down the other side. After lunch and a brief detour via the small but stunning Abudulari Lakes we should arrive into our second camp at around four in the afternoon. Another great days walking done.
The following morning we walk for another hour and a half in a stunning valley to the little village of Roshka before picking up the boats for one of the highlights of the trip, white water rafting on the Aragvi River.
Next stop is the pretty town of Gori, birthplace to Georgia’s most infamous sons, Joseph Stalin. Here there is an excellent museum, with all manner of memorabilia, and the train carriage in which Stalin travelled to the Yalta Conference in 1945.
And just outside town is the amazing 1st millennia BC troglodyte cave town of Uplistsike; a conurbation used in times of invasion and to avoid religious persecution.
And finally – and check if this is included on your tour – is a day in the east, in a region known as Kakheti that is reputedly the home of wine making.
According to the wine historian Hugh Johnston, Georgia has a pretty good claim to be the birthplace of wine making, with evidence of viniculture dating back more than 7,000 years. Indeed the place I am at now, Kinzmauruli, claims to have been making wine since 1533. Needless to say with experience like that Georgian wine can be pretty darn good.
In this region we’ll also visit some cultural highlights, taste wine and have lunch with a charming family in their garden.
In my opinion, this is a wonderful trip perfectly balancing the historical highs of one of Europe’s most fascinating counties with the remote and wild mountains she possesses. It is suitable for anyone in a good state of health that enjoys walking, history, cuisine and of course wine. On the three times I’ve run this trip I’ve taken clients aged from 25 to 75 – and all have loved enjoyed it. Georgia is one of those countries that is likely to get under your skin. The history, culture, cuisine, wine – and above all sociability of the locals – is sure to have you coming back again and again. So be warned, your first trip to Georgia is unlikely to be your last!

July 1945 - two month after the end of the war in Europe and the allied victory over the German Reich the three allied leaders have come to Germany to work out a piece treaty - these 16 days, where the fate of post-war Europe was decided, go down in history as the Potsdam Conference (Jul 17, 1945 - Aug 2, 1945)
The outcome was intended as a peace treaty for Europe, but it turned out to be the beginning of 45 years of cold war.
It was at Cecilienhof in Potsdam, where the big three met: Harry S. Truman, President of the Unites States of America, the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin, the Russian Communist Party General Secretary
The main topics to negotiate were how to divide the control over Germany (division into occupation zones), to agree on German reparations, to agree on the German borders, but also on borders of Poland, the dimantling of German war industry and the punishment of war criminals (trials, held some month later in Nuremberg).
Truman's intent was also to end the war in Japan as soon as possible. He mentioned a "powerful new weapon". In the last days of the conference, the US, Britain and China gave Japan an ultimatum to surrender or otherwise threatened with "prompt and utter destruction" without mentioning a new bomb.
Some days after the Potsdam Conference, Trum gave the order to drop off the first atomic bomb on Japan (Aug 6, 1945)
The documentation also shows pictures from the Berlin directly after the war, the destroyed city, the Führerbunker (Hitler's bunker), women clearing away the rubble, etc.
Cecilienhof in Potsdam is nowaday a memorial commemorating the Conference and negotiations for peace.

NTHS V-E Day Film Fest: Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam Conference's P13 World Studies
The present crisis is as serious as the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, said Professor Richard Sakwa, keynote speaker at the Russia in Global Politics - Driving Values and Interests conference. “While the Yalta Conference of 1945 acknowledged the power of Soviet Russia, and accepted a geopolitical and ideological pluralism, Western politics have not regarded Russia as an equal after 1989,” said Sakwa, who is professor of Russian and European politics at the University of Kent and associate fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs. The West has lived in a “fool’s paradise” in the last 25 years, but it is not the resurfacing differences of the two sides that pose the biggest threat to stability, but the lack of ways of reconciliation and communication, he said.

Lesson 9 The Yalta Conference and The Potsdam Conference US Diplomacy
Yalta (Ukrainian and Russian: Я́лта Crimean Tatar: Yalta is a resort city on the north coast of the Black Sea in the Crimean peninsula. It serves as the administrative center of Yalta Municipality, one of the regions Crimea is divided into. Its population is 78,115
The city is located on the site of an ancient Greek colony, said to have been founded by Greek sailors who were looking for a safe shore (γιαλός – yalos in Greek) on which to land. It is situated on a deep bay facing south towards the Black Sea, surrounded by wooded mountains. It has a warm humid subtropical climate with many vineyards and orchards in the vicinity.
Livadia Palace (Russian: Ливадийский дворец, Ukrainian: Лівадійський палац) was a summer retreat of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and his family in Livadiya, Crimea. The Yalta Conference was held there in 1945, when the palace housed the apartments of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and other members of the American delegation. Today the palace houses a museum, but it is sometimes used for international summits.
The Swallow's Nest (Russian: Ласточкино гнездo, Lastochkino gnezdo, Ukrainian: Ластівчине гніздо, Lastivchyne hnizdo) is a decorative castle located at Gaspra, a small spa town between Yalta and Alupka, on the Crimean Peninsula. It was built between 1911 and 1912, on top of the 40-metre (130 ft) high Aurora Cliff, in a Neo-Gothic design by the Russian architect Leonid Sherwood for the Baltic German oil millionaire Baron von Steingel.
The castle overlooks the Cape of Ai-Todor on the Black Sea coast and is located near the remains of the Roman castrum of Charax. The Swallow's Nest is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Crimea, having become the symbol of Crimea's southern coastline.

Ole Dammegård is an author, international speaker, investigator, former journalist, artist and creator of the website Light On Conspiracies. He returns to Red Ice Radio for a special extended segment to speak about his research and thoughts on an extremely controversial subject, the Jewish holocaust. Ole has spent at least 25 years investigating a multitude of conspiracies, and this area of history involves such an incredibly sinister agenda that it is now illegal in some European countries to question the official story or even attempt to investigate the facts. We discuss the sad fact that in the west, where we have a strong tradition of phi

We discuss the sad fact that in the west, where we have a strong tradition of philosophizing and discussion, this story involves so much horror, misery and bloodshed that most will not even dare entertain the notion of a massive cover-up at play. Ole stresses the importance of really looking at the 6 million number, a figure that has popped up repeatedly beginning in the late 19th century, and has been discounted just as many times. We consider the role of Hollywood in perpetuating the extremely emotional images of horrific crimes the Germans allegedly committed against the Jews, and we take into account the very inconsistent, baffling stories of evil that make absolutely no sense. Ole picks apart some of the gruesome details of the concentration camp gas chambers, where the monumental task of exterminating millions of people was purportedly carried out, and he details clear evidence that shows these accounts do not compute. Then, we take an even closer look at the programming we have been subjected to and the sheer magnitude of the lie, along with the anti-Semitic wall of defense that keeps people from unlearning and awakening to the Holocaust hoax. We also talk about the Soviets’ function in producing the death toll number and gas chamber narrative, players who were involved in the Yalta Conference held two months before the end of WWII, and the policy that was decided upon to be used against Germany. Later, we examine the ways in which the Jewish holocaust and other events like 9/11 and the Charlie Hebdo massacre have resulted in a war against critical thinking. We attempt to unravel Israel’s part in this dark agenda and why America is so wrapped up in the mayhem created by its foreign policy. At the end, we mull over the real reasons Germany had for mounting this horrible conflict and we take into account who has been pulling the strings behind the war machine.

...On 16 December 1944, Germany attempted its last desperate measure for success on the Western Front by using most of its remaining reserves to launch a massive counter-offensive in the Ardennes to attempt to split the Western Allies, encircle large portions of Western Allied troops and capture their primary supply port at Antwerp to prompt a political settlement. By January, the offensive had been repulsed with no strategic objectives fulfilled. In Italy, the Western Allies remained stalemated at the German defensive line. In mid-January 1945, the Soviets and Poles attacked in Poland, pushing from the Vistula to the Oder river in Germany, and overran East Prussia. On 4 February, US, British, and Soviet leaders met for the Yalta Conference. They agreed on the occupation of post-war Germany, and on when the Soviet Union would join the war against Japan.
In February, the Soviets entered Silesia and Pomerania, while Western Allies entered western Germany and closed to the Rhine river. By March, the Western Allies crossed the Rhine north and south of the Ruhr, encircling the German Army Group B, while the Soviets advanced to Vienna. In early April, the Western Allies finally pushed forward in Italy and swept across western Germany, while Soviet and Polish forces stormed Berlin in late April. The American and Soviet forces linked up on Elbe river on 25 April. On 30 April 1945, the Reichstag was captured, signalling the military defeat of the Third Reich.
Several changes in leadership occurred during this period. On 12 April, President Roosevelt died and was succeeded by Harry Truman. Benito Mussolini was killed by Italian partisans on 28 April. Two days later, Hitler committed suicide, and was succeeded by Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz.
German forces surrendered in Italy on 29 April. Total and unconditional surrender was signed on 7 May...
In the Pacific theatre, American forces accompanied by the forces of the Philippine Commonwealth advanced in the Philippines, clearing Leyte by the end of April 1945. They landed on Luzon in January 1945 and captured Manila in March following a battle which reduced the city to ruins. Fighting continued on Luzon, Mindanao, and other islands of the Philippines until the end of the war. On the night of 9–10 March, B-29 bombers of the US Army Air Forces struck Tokyo with incendiary bombs, which killed 100,000 people within a few hours. Over the next five months, American bombers firebombed 66 other Japanese cities, causing the destruction of untold numbers of buildings and the deaths of between 350,000–500,000 Japanese civilians.
...Chinese forces started to counterattack in Battle of West Hunan that occurred between 6 April and 7 June 1945. American forces also moved towards Japan, taking Iwo Jima by March, and Okinawa by the end of June. At the same time American bombers were destroying Japanese cities, American submarines cut off Japanese imports, drastically reducing Japan's ability to supply its overseas forces.
On 11 July, Allied leaders met in Potsdam, Germany....
The Allies called for unconditional Japanese surrender in the Potsdam declaration of 27 July, but the Japanese government was internally divided on whether to make peace and did not respond. In early August the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Like the Japanese cities previously bombed by American airmen, the US and its allies justified the atomic bombings as military necessity to avoid invading the Japanese home islands which would cost the lives of between 250,000–500,000 Allied troops and millions of Japanese troops and civilians.[271] Between the two bombings, the Soviets, pursuant to the Yalta agreement, invaded Japanese-held Manchuria, and quickly defeated the Kwantung Army, which was the largest Japanese fighting force.[272][273] The Red Army also captured Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands. On 15 August 1945, Japan surrendered, with the surrender documents finally signed aboard the deck of the American battleship USS Missouri on 2 September 1945, ending the war...

Seventy years ago the ‘Big Three’ – Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin – met at Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula. Their mission was to map out a peace plan after the final destruction of Nazi Germany. Since then the word Yalta has taken on a variety of historical meanings…even in 2015.

The Livadia Palace is one of Yalta's must-sees. The seat of the Yalta Conference, which took place there in February 1945. Home of the American delegation and F.D. Roosevelt during the Big Three meet. The walls of the palace saw Stalin, Churchill & F.D. Roosevelt. The after-war Europe was divided there. Stalin and Roosevelt held secret talks over the Asia-Pacific region in one of its rooms.
The Livadia palace has left footprint in the World and Russian history. Built as the summer residence for the family of the last Russian Tsar Nikolai ll, it boasts marvelous exterior, splendid gardens and breath-taking views.
Take the tour of the palace to follow the Yalta Conference events and sneak a peek at the Tsar's family life in Yalta.
