http://www.cafwd.org Thanks to the open data movement, which really has gained momentum over the last few years, folks can now see what is going on, behind closed doors. Technology advances have brought citizens applications and tools to digest and sort through all of the data that is now out there. Publishing the data is only one part of the process, that's why many non-profits and for-profit companies are stepping in to make sure folks are not flooded and bogged down with the data. California Forward attended the CITRIS Data and Democracy Initiative and UC Berkley's Institute for Governmental Studies one day symposium. Showcase shines light on innovation in California higher ed

As March 20 approaches, 52 college campuses in California are waiting to see if they’ve won something. That’s the day the California Department of Finance may annouce which campuses will receive what will total $50 million in grants through the California Innovation in Higher Education program that was created by Governor Browns and the Legislature last year. Community Colleges, California State University and University of California campuses were all eligible to apply awards for programs that either helped increase the number of bachelor degrees awarded, helped more students graduate in four years and help improve the ability to transfer throughout the California higher education system. In a way, these campuses have already won. “The awards are important because they are innovative in themselves, spotlighting the kinds of changes needed to revitalize California’s long standing commitment to access to higher education while establishing an equal commitment to completion for all students,” said Jim Mayer, president and CEO of California Forward, which convened the Showcase with several other partners. On March 9 in Sacramento, a showcase featuring the importance of innovation in higher education was held attracting business, civic and education leaders from across California. CA Fwd’s Angel Cardenas filed this video report of the showcase.

Newly launched Voter's Edge is one-stop info resource for voters

Berkeley-based MapLight has partnered with the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (www.cavotes.org) to add all of the information found at the League's Smart Voter (www.smartvoter.org) website with all of the data MapLight has been adding to Voter's Edge (www.votersedge.org), creating the most robust single website for information concerning California elections, candidates and ballot measures. The newly launched site will also, for the first time, a ballot-sharing feature developed with the aid of California Forward that will allow voters to not only preview their ballot, but actually fill a virtual one out than can then be shared through email or any social media via a custom generated URL. The new site aims not only to inform voters, but to facilitate discussion that will hopefully spur high levels of civic participation at the ballot box than California has seen in recent years.

City of L.A. data chief talks about promise of open data

Governments around California and across the nation are releasing vast troves of public data, making government more transparent than ever before. As the open government movement gains momentum, advocates argue that open data has the potential to help governments do much more than increase transparency and accountability. At CA Fwd’s recent Long Beach Regional Data Forum, we spoke with Abhi Nemani, L.A.’s Chief Data Officer, about how governments can generate more value from the data they’re already releasing. Watch the video to hear Nemani explain how governments can realize the promise of Open Data. This Wednesday in Fresno, Nemani will share his experience with L.A.‘s open data efforts at the next regional data forum, a free workshop on civic data in local government hosted at the University of California, Merced’s Small Business Development Center, organized by CA Fwd and the Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. Workforce town halls brainstorm closing skills gap in California

Recently, five regional workforce town hall meetings were held across California—in Fresno, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and the Silicon Valley. Business leaders, community college leaders and others involved in the regional economies gathered in each of these town halls to express ideas about how to strengthen California’s workforce. Ed Coghlan of CA Fwd reports on what the results were and what the town halls were meant to accomplish as part of the goal of closing the skill gap in California. The Town Halls were part of the work of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors Task Force on Workforce, Job Creation and a Strong Economy, which holds its next meeting on Thursday April 2, in Sacramento. The Task Force is comprised of knowledgeable leaders from across the community college system, the business community, labor, public agencies involved in workforce training, community based organizations, K-12 policy, and other groups and is addressing how California regions can address the skills gap that exists in California’s economy today. The Task Force, which will report its recommendations to the Board of Governors this fall, has four objectives: -Prepare students for high-value jobs that currently exist in the State -Position California’s regions to attract high-value jobs in key industry sectors from other states and around the globe -Create more jobs through workforce training that enables small business development -Finance these initiatives by braiding existing state and federal resources. The California Community Colleges play an important role in boosting our state’s economy by serving more than 2.6 million students a year. In fact, one out of four community college students in the U.S. is enrolled in a California community college, making it the nation’s largest system of higher education.

A missing ingredient in California's manufacturing revival

The reports of manufacturing's demise in California are probably exaggerated. In Southern California, the largest manufacturing region in the country, there are still 360,000 workers in the industry. The problem for manufacturers is that number of skilled workers is not big enough. Superior Thread Rolling Company, Inc., in Arleta, is a prime example. This small manufacturing company has been doing business in Southern California for more than 60 years. The company, which once had a rocky relationship with California, is thriving and contributing significantly to the local and state economies and has doubled its business in the last 10 years. Despite its continued success, the company's owner says there continues to be some bumps along the road. California Forward's Cheryl Getuiza explains.
