Most of Tajikistan's population belongs to the Persian-speakingTajik ethnic group, who share language, culture and history with Afghanistan and Iran. Once part of the Samanid Empire, Tajikistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in the 20th century, known as the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik SSR). Mountains cover over 90% of this Central Asian republic.
After independence, Tajikistan suffered from a devastating civil war which lasted from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Trade in commodities such as cotton, aluminium and uranium has contributed greatly to this steady improvement.

The starting points for the entrances are known Penjikent, Khujand and Dushanbe cities. Fan Mountains were sung by Yuri Vizbor, who was amazed by unusually beautiful scenery of this region. These mountains and countryside have become for him a very special place on the earth. The following lines are dedicated to Fan Mountains by Yuri Vizbor:

Lunch.
Drive to Kalai Hum. This region is much more strongly Muslim and this can be seen in the conservative dress and beards. Over a mountain pass to Kalaikhum and the scenery and people change again. Here the people are Pamirs, not Tajiks, a number of separate tribal groups with their own languages. Overnight in guesthouse.

Top things to do in Dushanbe
Statue of Ismoil Somoni
It is a must place to go if you visit Dushanbe. it is located in front of the Old Tajik Foreign Office building and has a huge park behind it. Its a good place to walk and take pictures.
Rudaki Park
Lovely trees. Great central location. A must visit in Dushanbe. You can also bike. Central in Dushanbe.
National Museum of Tajikistan
Well the museum is big and is also accessible for people with disability. That's great...
Large A/C museum, with good English signage.
Varzob gorge
This drive up into the mountains is quite a delight---gushing river, nice little restaurants along the side of the road to cater to locals wanting to escape the heat. Glaciers---goats being herded--roadside vegetable stands---all so very picturesque.
Hisor Fortress
5 km West of Dushanbe, Dushanbe, Tajikistan
This fortress looks quite impressive, in its time it had been demolished and rebuilt 23 times. It was not part of the Silk Road but it did have many traders coming there.

The Amazing Art of Bread Baking in Tajikistan
In Tajikistan, bread is still baked in a beautiful, traditional way at Shamsullo Dustov’s house in Kumsangir—just 30 miles from the Afghan border. Much of the surrounding land is nonarable, so the homemade bread makes up a large part of peoples’ average daily caloric intake. Watch the process unfold in John Wendle's short piece.

This was part of a cultural exchange program sponsored by the U.S. State Dept. and is one of many similar tours the band has done over the last dozen years. When this tour was made in 2005 Tajikistan had just opened up to allow foreign visitors and the band was the fist American musical group to visit the former Soviet Union Islamic country. Band members Doug Protsik, fiddle; John Gawler, banjo, Jeff Mckeen accordion, guitar; Bau Graves, guitar, mandolin. Filmed, edited and uploaded by Doug Portsik.

October 2013 Tajikistan Silk Road Trip
Khorog, Tajikistan to Osh, Kyrgyzstan on the Pamir Highway with three days in Murghab with a motorcycle trip up the river valley.
GoPro Hero3 Silver
(It's not easy to travel in Tajikistan. You need to know Russian or the local language. Also, it is much easier if you have your own very rugged vehicle. We could not find any cars or motorcycles to rent and drive. The only option available is to rent a car with a driver for like $.80/km which is expensive! Share the cost of the ride with others! - The scenery in the High Pamirs is unbelievable. Hopefully it will get easier and cheaper to see it all in the future! Hopefully Tajikistan will drop the visa requirement like Kyrgyzstan has done.)

TREKKING TOUR IN FAN MOUNTAINS
Tajikistan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and more than 93% of it is mountainous. Ninety-three percent of Tajikistan's territory is mountainous, and the mountain glaciers are the source of its rivers.
Fan Mountains – a popular tourism and mountain climbing area in Tajikistan. There are about 100 passes in height from 3200 to 5060 m (Mirali). The Fan Mountains are the highest part of Zeravshan range with 11 peaks above 5,000 m with sharp fantastical pointed forms. In the bosom of these mountains are about 30 lakes, the largest of which are Iskandarkul, and the most beautiful and picturesque, famous for the unique play of colors - Kulikalon. On the slopes of the mountains and upper valleys (altitude 3,000 m) – there are thickets of juniper forests, giving the appeal to the valleys of rivers Arg, Sarimat, Karakul and etc. You can see a birch, a poplar, a sea buckthorn in the valleys; well-spread shrubs - wild rose, barberry, currant, meadow-sweet; large areas of the slopes and valleys are covered with meadow, steppe, and semi-desert vegetation (Čair, Eremurus, astragalus, onion, sage, mint, thyme and etc.). Approaches to the passes of Fan Mountains are in the valleys of rivers Shing, Voru, Artuch, Pasrud (in the north) and Iskandar-river and Karakul (in the south).
I left my heart in the Fan Mountains,
And now heartless I’m walking across the plains.
And in the quiet talks and noisy feasts,
In silence I dream of the blue tops...

"On the Road to Tajikistan" Old Grey Goose International
"On the Road to Tajikistan", presented by Old Grey Goose International is a traditional musical travelog of the band's tour to the Central Asian country and performing at Tajikistan's first international folk festival held in their capital of Dushanbe. Scenes include performers many countries including India, Iran, Russia, Azerbiajan, Uzbekistan, Germany, and Tajikistan. Aspects of the band's philosophy includes collaborations with musicans and dancers both formally and informally as well as outreach concerts in schools and orphanages. A Tajik traditional musical instrument museum is visited, local markets, and various excursions throughout the country are presented.

The Amazing Art of Bread Baking in Tajikistan
The Amazing Art of Bread Baking in Tajikistan
In Tajikistan, bread is still baked in a beautiful, traditional way at Shamsullo Dustov’s house in Kumsangir—just 30 miles from the Afghan border. Much of the surrounding land is nonarable, so the homemade bread makes up a large part of peoples’ average daily caloric intake. Watch the process unfold in John Wendle's short piece.

Drugs Blight - Tajikistan
Nov 2007
Tajikistan is struggling to cope with an influx of cheap drugs from Afghanistan. The country has just one rehab clinic and on average, ten soldiers a year die in shoot outs with drug traffickers.
Last year, more than two billion dollars worth of heroin was smuggled from Afghanistan. "No matter how much effort we put into fighting the trafficking, the real problem is in Afghanistan", complains General Nazarov. Many are nostalgic of the days of the Taliban, when heroin was much harder to obtain.
