The Great Rann of Kutch, along with the Little Rann of Kutch and the Banni grasslands on its southern edge, is situated in the district of Kutch and comprises some 30,000 square kilometres (10,000 sq mi) between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. The marsh can be accessed from the village of Kharaghoda in Surendranagar District.
In India's summer monsoon, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, which average 15 meters above sea level, fills with standing water. In very wet years, the wetland extends from the Gulf of Kutch on the west through to the Gulf of Cambay on the east.
The area was a vast shallow of the Arabian Sea until continuing geological uplift closed off the connection with the sea, creating a vast lake that was still navigable during the time of Alexander the Great. The Ghaggar River, which presently empties into the desert of northern Rajasthan, formerly emptied into the Rann of Kutch, but the lower reaches of the river dried up as its upstream tributaries were captured by the Indus and Ganges thousands of years ago. Traces of the delta and its distributary channels on the northern boundary of the Rann of Kutch were documented by the Geological Survey of India in 2000.
The Luni River, which originates in Rajasthan, drains into the desert in the northeast corner of the Rann. Other rivers feeding into the marsh include the Rupen from the east and the West Banas River from the northeast.
There are sandy islets of thorny scrub, forming a wildlife sanctuary and a breeding ground for some of the largest flocks of greater and lesser flamingos. Wildlife, including the Indian wild ass, shelter on islands of higher ground, called bets, during the flooding.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today intercepted a dhow in the Gulf of Kutch off Gujarat coast with nine persons on board and seized a stock of foreign cigarettes worth Rs one crore.
All those onboard the dhow, named MSV Safina Al Meraj, were Indian nationals. The dhow was taken to Salaya harbour in Jamnagar district, said inspector general Kuldip Singh Sheoran, commander Coast Guard Region (North-West).
The ICG also recovered two Thuraya sets (satellite phones).
“On searching the vessel, the ICG personnel found two cartons of ‘David off’, each carton containing ten thousand cigarettes, and 50 cartons of Gudang Gadam, which contain 14,400 cigarettes each,” said Sheoran.
The search of the vessel was still on with officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and other agencies taking part.
According to a statement from Defence PRO, intelligence about a suspicious vessel which had sailed from Sharjah was received on June 18, following which the ICG boat ‘Sangram’ intercepted it today, despite the rough seas.
The dhow was damaged and water was leaking inside, so it was escorted to Salaya harbour.

View of a beautiful moonrise over Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India.
Rann of Kutch is a large area of salt marshes located in mostly in Gujarat, India and the southern tip of Sindh, Pakistan. It is divided into two main parts; Great Rann of Kutch and Little Rann of Kutch.
The Rann of Kutch is located in the Thar Desert bio-geographic area in the Indian state of Gujarat with some parts in Pakistani province of Sindh. It is a seasonally marshy region, the word Rann meaning "salt marsh", alternating with medaks, elevated pieces of land where vegetation grows.
Kutch is the name of the district in Gujarat where this region is situated. The marsh covers a huge area of around 10,000 square miles and is positioned between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. To the northeast corner of the Rann of Kutch lies the Luni River, originating in Rajasthan.
The Rann of Kutch is the only large flooded grasslands zone in the whole Indo-Malayan region of the planet. The fact that the area has desert on one side and the sea on the other provides the Rann of Kutch with a variety of ecosystems, including mangroves and desert vegetation. The grassland and deserts of the Rann of Kutch are home to forms of wildlife that have adapted to the often harsh conditions of this vast area. These include endemic and endangered animal and plant species.

Traveling to the salt desert known as Rann of Kutch in Kutch district of India's western state Gujarat.

All national park lands then encompassed a total 39,919 km2 (15,413 sq mi) km², comprising 1.21% of India's total surface area.

The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.
The name "Rann" comes from the Hindi word ran meaning "desert". The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata. As early as 325 BCE, Alexander the Great was aware of the area.

Train journey to salt desert of India - Kutch, Gujarat
Traveling to the salt desert known as Rann of Kutch in Kutch district of India's western state Gujarat.

National parks in India are IUCN category II protected areas. India's first national park was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, now known as Jim Corbett National Park. By 1970, India only had five national parks. In 1972, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act and Project Tiger to safeguard the habitats of conservation reliant species. Further federal legislation strengthening protections for wildlife was introduced in the 1980s. As of April 2012, there were 102 national parks. All national park lands then encompassed a total 39,919 km2 (15,413 sq mi) km², comprising 1.21% of India's total surface area.
A total of 166 national parks have been authorized. Plans are underway to establish the remaining scheduled parks. All of India's national parks are listed below alongside their home state or territory, area and the date that they were established. See Protected areas of India for an overview of all Indian
