Joe Miller sued the state over the way write-in ballots for his GOP rival have been counted. (Nov. 23) Alaska's bitterly contested Senate election may be far from over. Republican Joe Miller sued the state Monday, contesting the way write-in ballots for his rival have been counted. Currently, Senator Lisa Murkowski has a more than ten thousand vote lead over Miller. Last week, the Associated Press called the race for Murkowski -- who had to stage a write-in campaign after losing the Republican primary to the Tea-Party-backed Miller. Miller is attempting to stop the state from using discretion in determining voter intent on write-in ballots cast for Murkowski. State law says that the candidates last name must appear on the ballot as it appears on their declaration of candidacy. However, Lieutenant Governor Craig Campbell -- who is overseeing the election -- is allowing ballots count toward Murkowski, even if her name is misspelt or those phonetic to her name. Campbell defends the procedure saying he doesn't want to disenfranchise any voters. The target date for certifying the election is November 29th. A re-count can then be requested by December 4th. The Alaska Republican Party has urged Miller to concede. The Brown family said they had faith in the pending decision of a grand jury and called to refrain from violence. Police are ready to respond to any possible outbreak of violence in or around the St. Louis suburb Ferguson, where weeks of heated protests followed the killing in August. Mary MacCarthy reports: Historic comet landing attempt underway The European Space Agency has released a probe from its Rosetta satellite to attempt a historic landing on a comet. If successful, the probe would provide the closest look mankind has ever had at a comet. Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin. Russian bomber patrols to reach Gulf of Mexico The military says Russia's long-range bombers will go from the Arctic Ocean to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico on regular patrol missions, in a show of muscle reflecting tensions with the West over Ukraine. Ted Stevens and ex-NASA chief Sean O'Keefe crashed near a remote fishing village in Alaska, killing the longtime senator and at least four others, authorities said Tuesday. (Aug. 10) Former Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens was killed in a plane crash in the state he has long represented. A spokesman for his family tells The Associated Press that the 86-year-old Republican was among the five who died. The plane went down Monday in a remote part of southwestern Alaska. Former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe was also said to be aboard, his fate, though, isn't clear yet. Officials say four people did survive and crews now on the scene have been tending to them. Stevens served in the Senate from 1968 until 2009. He was beloved as a tireless advocate for Alaska's economic interests and championed the logging industry and pushed for stronger measures to combat climate change. His career though ended in controversy amid allegations that he accepted home renovations and fancy trimmings from a powerful oil field services contractor, and then lied about it on congressional disclosure documents. He was convicted just before the 2008 election, a vote he lost, but five months later federal officials dismissed the charges against him. Bear attacks jogger at Alaska Air Force base

A woman jogging at an Air Force base in Alaska on Sunday survived an attack by a brown bear sow defending its two cubs, the military said. The victim, who is the wife of a man stationed at the base and declined to be identified, walked a mile after she was mauled before a good Samaritan spotted her and took her to a hospital at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The woman was listed in stable condition on Monday at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.According to CNN affiliate KTUU, the bear clawed the woman's arms, legs, neck and torso before leaving the site. The station reported the woman had the presence of mind to walk toward a populated part of the base even though it was uphill. Maj. Angela Webb, a spokeswoman for the Air Force, said the area is popular with runners and bicyclists, who are warned to bring bear spray. "In this particular case, the runner turned the corner at the wrong time and wrong place," Webb said. The bear took a defensive pose, Webb said, before it went after the jogger. The woman had been jogging with her husband, but he had run ahead of her. It was the first bear encounter since 2010, when a bear went after four girls, three of whom played dead. The fourth ran to get help as the bear wandered away, Webb said. The Air Force Times reported that bears, moose and wolves are not rare at the base, which spreads across more than 74,000 acres. It is adjacent to Anchorage. Alaska trip photos taken was with as few people in the photos as possible. 3 of 13 days July 2012 on the Volendam. Some more detailed info about the ship click on "show more" below. MS Volendam is an R-Class cruise ship belonging to Holland America Line. There are 10 decks, with passenger cabins spread across 5 of them. The ship contains 8 bars, 2 swimming pools, 2 hot tubs, a spa, and a show lounge. Holland company conducts cruises of the Inside Passage traversing British Columbia and Alaska. Volendam is an mid-sized cruise ship operated by Holland America Line as a subsidiary company of Carnival Cruise Lines. She has three sister ships in the fleet, Zaandam, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The ship's theme is flowers, and she features floral designs throughout. The atrium contains a sculpture spanning three decks which was created by Luciano Vistosi. Cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TV's and DVD players. She also contains other standard elements such as the Explorations Café and children's clubs. The Website $ became the Explorations Cafe, which includes 10 desktop computers with Internet access, a well-stocked library, areas for board games and puzzles, and a cafe that offers free finger sandwiches and pastries, as well as for-fee coffee drinks. Dining options include the Rotterdam Dining Lounge, and the Pinnacle Grill, which is the ship's signature restaurant and features evenings recreating New York's Le Cirque restaurant. The Lido restaurant has different sections for different cultural cuisine, such as Filipino, Indonesian, Moroccan, Italian, Swiss, and more. Each and every night, the Lido Restaurant offers different kinds of cultural foods, each specified in a menu before entering. The Lido Restaurant also features the Canaletto Italian Cuisine for those who wish to have their own sectioned off area to eat. The Greenhouse Spa and Salon is a place to pamper yourself for the day - enjoy a hot stone massage, a facial, or get your hair and your nails done. Walk around the ship and take in the breathtaking collection of art and antiques. For the kids, there is Club HAL - a dedicated youth area for kids aged 3-12 that has supervised activities, and also The Loft and The Oasis for the teenagers. Holland America Line automatically adds $11.50 per person, per day, to onboard accounts ($12 per person, per day, for passengers in suites). This is then shared among waiters, stewards and other service personnel. That amount can be adjusted in either direction by visiting the front desk. A 15 percent gratuity is tacked on to bar bills. Note that gratuities are not automatically included on bills for spa treatments. There are typically two formal nights on seven-night cruises, three on 10-night cruises. What It's Like To Live In Alaska

Fun fact: it's not cold all the time. I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, which means my non-Alaska-born peers often find this fascinating. (Understandable. It's a pretty dope state.) Caitlin, who's been my close friend since college, once humorously noted how she has heard people ask me this question dozens and dozens of times: "What's it like to live in ALASKA??" So while visiting my homeland of Fairbanks, Alaska last year, my friend Caitlin Cowie and my sister Julie Barsi and I decided to make this video. Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas Mount McKinley, or Denali "The High One" is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm. Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears. Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage. The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer. One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries. A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products. It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design. The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months. About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643" of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult. Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k) The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival. Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long. The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America. Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear. Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943. Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions. In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America) generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.
