In a modern military, a missile is a self-propelled guided weapon system. Missiles have four system components: targeting and/or guidance, flight system, engine, and warhead. Missiles come in types adapted for different purposes: surface-to-surface and air-to-surface (ballistic, cruise, anti-ship, anti-tank), surface-to-air (anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic), air-to-air, and anti-satellite missiles.
An ordinary English-language usage predating guided weapons is simply any thrown object, for example objects thrown by rowdy football spectators at players.
The word missile comes from the Latin verb mittere, meaning "to send".
In military usage, munitions projected towards a target are broadly categorised as follows:
The first missiles to be used operationally were a series of missiles developed by Nazi Germany in World War II. Most famous of these are the V-1 flying bomb and V-2, both of which used a simple mechanical autopilot to keep the missile flying along a pre-chosen route. Less well known were a series of anti-shipping and anti-aircraft missiles, typically based on a simple radio control system directed by the operator. However, these early systems in World War II were only built in small numbers.

With these missiles, I can hit anything on the field. I don't even need to have a line of sight to my target anymore. I control the direction of the missiles with 4 simple keys.
I boost the missiles ridiculously high into the atmosphere. As I boost them into the atmosphere I very gently tap nudge the missile in the direction I want it to go. Gravity takes over and a small tilt becomes a clear lean in the direction of my target. I use the controls to nudge the missile a little bit to make sure it lands right on top of my target. Gravity does most of the work.

Pakistan Tests First Indigenous Armed Drone, Laser Guided Missile
The global proliferation of armed aerial drones took a major leap forward Friday when Pakistan’s military said it had successfully tested its own version and would soon deploy them against terrorists.
The drone, designated the Burraq, will be equipped with a laser-guided missile capable of striking with pinpoint accuracy in all types of weather, the military said. In the Koran, Burraq is the name of the white horse that took the Islamic prophet to heaven.
Gen. Raheel Sharif, Pakistan’s army chief of staff, witnessed the test and commended the country’s engineers and scientists for “untiring efforts to acquire state-of-the-art technology” that puts “Pakistan in a different league.”
Pakistan today successfully tested its first indigenous all-weather armed drone and a laser guided missile.
Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif attended the ceremony and witnessed the test-fire of the new missile on static and moving targets.
The drone, named Burraq, has the ability to fly in all types of weather conditions and strike its targets with pinpoint accuracy.
Pakistan also tested its laser guided missile named Barq. Mr Sharif said this newly developed arsenal will increase the military's capacity in fighting terrorism. He commended engineers, scientists and technicians for their untiring efforts to develop this state of the art technology.

Missiles have four system components: targeting and/or missile guidance, flight system, engine, and warhead. All known existing missiles are designed to be propelled during powered flight by chemical reactions inside a rocket engine, jet engine, or other type of engine. Non-self-propelled airborne explosive devices are generally referred to as shells and usually have a shorter range than missiles.

This may sound expensive, but the Rocket Harvester is cheap at only 1400 credits, which is lower than the Mammoth Armed Reclamation Vehicle!
Overall, the Rocket Harvester is an excellent unit that most GDI commanders should include in their armies if possible.

PACIFIC OCEAN (March 17, 2014) Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) fire an MK 38 25mm gun during a live fire exercise. The MK-38 is a 25-mm machine gun installed for ship self-defense to counter High Speed Maneuvering Surface Targets (HSMST). It was first employed aboard combatant and auxiliary ships conducting Mid-East Force escort operations and during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. MK 38 Mod 1s are maintained in a rotatable pool for temporary installation aboard deployed ships. Following the October 2000 attack on USS Cole (DDG 67), Task Force Hip Pocket identified an improved MK 38 Machine Gun System (MGS) as a means to increase shipboard self defense against small boat threats. In 2003, the Chief of Naval Operations documented the requirement and directed the development and fielding of the MK 38 Mod 2. Installed aboard CG, DDG, FFG, LSD, LPD, LHD, LHA, LCC, PC, OSV, and USCG FRC class ships and planned for installation aboard CVN, AS, and MK VI class ships, the MK 38 Mod 2 MGS is a low cost, stabilized self defense weapon system that dramatically improves ships' self-defense capabilities. A cruise missile is a guided missile, the major portion of whose flight path to its target (a land-based or sea-based target) is conducted at approximately constant velocity; that relies on the dynamic reaction of air for lift, and upon propulsion forces to balance drag. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high accuracy. Modern cruise missiles can travel at supersonic or high subsonic speeds, are self-navigating, and can fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low altitude trajectory. In 2011, it was estimated that a single Tomahawk cruise missile costs US$1,410,000.

Warship Disasters! Episode 2: The Kynda class Missile Cruisers
The Project 58 warships, known in the West as the Kynda class, were the Soviet Union's first attempt at a purpose-made major surface combatant armed primarily with guided missiles. Unfortunately, they were de-facto Destroyers that were overloaded --- both figuratively *and* literally --- with the equipment and operational expectations of a Cruiser. They were thus accidental homages to the HMS Swift (see the first episode of this series), that fell flat in operational service.
In this presentation, you'll see how Project 58 went wrong, starting in it's infancy, and continuing all the way up to when these four unfortunate vessels were stricken

Smart Bombs
A smart bomb (also known as a guided bomb, guided bomb unit, or GBU) is a precision-guided munition designed to achieve greater accuracy. Because the damage effects of explosive weapons fall off with distance according to a power law, even modest improvements in accuracy (and hence reduction in miss distance) enable a target to be effectively attacked with fewer or smaller bombs. Therefore, with guided weapons, fewer air crews are put at risk, less ordnance spent, and collateral damage reduced. The creation of precision-guided munitions resulted in the retroactive renaming of older bombs as unguided bombs or "dumb bombs".

Most Advance Guided Missile Nuclear Submarine (SSGN) Highly Classified - USS Florida
A ballistic missile submarine is a submarine equipped to launch submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) with nuclear warheads. These submarines became a major weapon system in the Cold War because of their nuclear deterrence capability. They can fire their missiles from thousands of kilometres from their targets, and their use of stealth technology makes them very difficult to detect. Their deployment has been dominated by the United States and the Soviet Union / Russia, with smaller numbers in service for France, the United Kingdom, China and India.
The first nation to field ballistic missile submarines was the Soviet Union, whose first ballistic missile submarine was a converted Zulu IV-class submarine equipped with a single ballistic missile launch tube in its sail. The first successful submarine launch of a ballistic missile was on 16 September 1955, and in 1956 the Soviet Navy modified the design of five additional Zulu-class diesel powered attack submarines and installed an extra compartment containing two large vertical ballistic missile launch tubes in the middle with the launchers incorporated in the fin/sail. These were called the Zulu V-class by NATO. This was followed by a series of specifically designed Golf-class units complemented by the nuclear-powered Hotel-class, with both classes having three vertical launch tubes incorporated in the sail/fin of each submarine. The initial SS-N-4 ballistic missiles could only be launched with the submarines on the surface, but were soon followed by SS-N-5 missiles which were launched with the submarine submerged. The Soviet analogue to the U.S. SSBNs, the Yankee-class SSBN with sixteen missiles, began to be built in 1964.
In the U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines have the designation SSBN and are nicknamed 'boomers.' The first U.S. SSBN was a Skipjack-class fast attack submarine, Scorpion, with a 130 ft (40 m) missile compartment welded into the middle. Renamed George Washington, this became the first submarine in the George Washington-class submarine, commissioned in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Ballistic missile submarines differ in purpose from attack submarines and cruise missile submarines; while attack submarines specialise in combat with other naval vessels (including enemy submarines and merchant shipping), and cruise missile submarines are designed to attack large warships and tactical targets on land, the primary mission of the ballistic missile is nuclear deterrence. Accordingly, the mission profile of a ballistic missile submarine concentrates on remaining undetected, rather than aggressively pursuing other vessels. Ballistic missile submarines are designed for stealth, to avoid detection at all costs. They use many sound-reducing design features, such as anechoic tiles on their hull surfaces, carefully designed propulsion systems, and machinery mounted on vibration-damping mounts.
Ballistic missile submarines equipped with nuclear warheads serve as the third leg of the nuclear triad in countries which also operate nuclear-armed land based missiles and aircraft. The invisibility and mobility of submarines offer both a reliable means of deterrence against an attack (by maintaining the threat of a second strike), and a surprise first-strike capability - particularly given the range of the weapons they carry.
The extra length and/or beam over attack subs of the same generation is in order to accommodate SLBMs such as the Russian R-29 or the NATO fielded—American manufactured Polaris-II, Poseidon and Trident-II missiles. Although some early models had to surface to launch their missiles, modern vessels typically launch while submerged at keel depths of usually less than 50 meters (164 feet). Missiles are launched upwards with an initial velocity sufficient for them to pop above the surface when their rocket motors fire, beginning the characteristic parabolic climb-from-launch of a ballistic missile.
SSBN is the US Navy hull classification symbol for a nuclear-powered, ballistic missile-carrying submarine. The SS denotes "Submarine" (alternatively "Ship, Submersible") the B denotes "ballistic missile," and the N denotes "nuclear powered." The designation SSBN is used not just in the USN, but throughout NATO under STANAG 1166.
In US naval slang, ballistic missile submarines are called boomers. In Britain, they are known as bombers. In both cases, submarines operate on a two-crew concept, with two complete crews including two captains, called Gold and Blue in the United States, Starboard and Port in the United Kingdom.
The French Navy commissioned its first ballistic missile submarines as SNLE, for Sous-marin Nucléaire Lanceur d'Engin (lit. "nuclear-powered device-launching submarines"). The term applies both to ballistic missile submarines in general (for instance "British SNLE" occurs and, more technically, as a specific classification of the Redoutable-class.

They are distinct from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in that they are used only as weapons and not for reconnaissance. In a cruise missile, the warhead is integrated into the vehicle and the vehicle is always sacrificed in the mission.
Cruise missile designs fundamentally derive from the German V-1 of World War II. Advances in transistor and computer technology have contributed to self-correcting avionic and aeronautical designs that allow missiles to be guided in flight, as opposed to only at launch. These advances developed into guided missiles and guided bombs, and later into the modern cruise missile.
In 2011, it was estimated that a single Tomahawk cruise missile costs US$1,410,000.
A cruise missile is basically a small, pilotless airplane. Cruise missiles have an 8.5-foot (2.61-meter) wingspan, are powered by turbofan engines and can fly 500 to 1,000 miles (805 to 1,610 km) depending on the configuration.
A cruise missile's job in life is to deliver a 1,000-pound (450-kg) high-explosive bomb to a precise location -- the target. The missile is destroyed when the bomb explodes. Since cruise missiles cost between $500,000 and $1,000,000 each, it's a fairly expensive way to deliver a 1,000-pound package.
Cruise missiles come in a number of variations (see the links at the end of the article for more information) and can be launched from submarines, destroyers or aircraft.
When you hear about hundreds of cruise missiles being fired at targets, they are almost always Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from destroyers.
Tomahawk cruise missiles frequently appear in the news because they are the U.S. weapon of choice for a variety of quick-strike operations. With all of the missiles in the U.S. arsenal, have you ever wondered why cruise missiles seem to come up so often?
This documentary looks at cruise missiles so that you can understand what they are, how they operate and why they are ideal for certain scenarios.
The Tomahawk is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile. The missile was named after the Native American axe. Introduced by McDonnell Douglas in the 1970s, it was initially designed as a medium to long-range, low-altitude missile that could be launched from a surface platform. It has been improved several times, and due to corporate divestitures and acquisitions, is now made by Raytheon. Some Tomahawks were also manufactured by General Dynamics (now Boeing Defense, Space & Security).
The hallmark of a cruise missile is its incredible accuracy. A common statement made about the cruise missile is, "It can fly 1,000 miles and hit a target the size of a single-car garage." Cruise missiles are also very effective at evading detection by the enemy because they fly very low to the ground (out of the view of most radar systems).
Four different systems help guide a cruise missile to its target:
IGS - Inertial Guidance System
Tercom - Terrain Contour Matching
GPS - Global Positioning System
DSMAC - Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation
The IGS is a standard acceleration-based system that can roughly keep track of where the missile is located based on the accelerations it detects in the missile's motion (click here for a good introduction). Tercom uses an on-board 3-D database of the terrain the missile will be flying over. The Tercom system "sees" the terrain it is flying over using its radar system and matches this to the 3-D map stored in memory. The Tercom system is responsible for a cruise missile's ability to "hug the ground" during flight. The GPS system uses the military's network of GPS satellites and an onboard GPS receiver to detect its position with very high accuracy.
Once it is close to the target, the missile switches to a "terminal guidance system" to choose the point of impact. The point of impact could be pre-programmed by the GPS or Tercom system. The DSMAC system uses a camera and an image correlator to find the target, and is especially useful if the target is moving. A cruise missile can also be equipped with thermal imaging or illumination sensors (as used in smart bombs).
Cruise missiles are 20 feet (6.25 meters) long and 21 inches (0.52 meters) in diameter. At launch, they include a 550-pound (250-kg) solid rocket booster and weigh 3,200 pounds (1450 kg).
The booster falls away once it has burned its fuel. The wings, tail fins and air inlet unfold, and the turbofan engine takes over.

In this presentation, you'll see how Project 58 went wrong, starting in it's infancy, and continuing all the way up to when these four unfortunate vessels were stricken.
As usual, I got editing support from Screbellious on the script for this presentation, so few spelling or grammatical errors are likely to have survived. ;-)

The Israeli Spike missile was developed by Rafael to meet IDF requirement for an infantry operated, precision guided weapon capable of defeating enemy armor from long distance. The missile employs electro-optical guidance and is provided in a ‘fire and forget’ variant or ‘fire and forget/fire and update’ variant, equipped with fiber-optical link maintaining optional ‘man in the loop’ control throughout the engagement. Once fired at a target, the missile flies an elevated trajectory from where it can acquire and engage targets which are not visible prior to launch, engaging targets from above, where they are least protected.

Space Engineer is like a mixture between Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program. The game is in pre-alpha and will be released on steam at some point in the future.
The main purpose of the game seems to be building a space fleet and fight/ally with the other factions. You build your ships piece by piece and the only know limit for the size of your ship is what you computer can handle.
After almost an hour of trial and error, I somehow got vertically launched missiles to work somewhat well in minecraft flans mod. With this technology, I am able to config guided missile destroyers like the KDX-III properly for minecraft flans mod.

What is Missiles?
A documentary report all about Missiles for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment.
In modern military usage, a missile, or guided missile, is a self-propelled precision-guided munition system, as opposed to an unguided self-propelled munition, referred to as a rocket. Missiles have four system components: targeting and/or missile guidance, flight system, engine, and warhead. Missiles come in types adapted for different purposes: surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missiles (ballistic, cruise, anti-ship, anti-tank, etc.), surface-to-air missiles (and anti-ballistic), air-to-air missiles, and anti-satellite weapons. All known existing missiles are designed to be propelled during powered flight by chemical reactions inside a rocket engine, jet engine, or other type of engine. Non-self-propelled airborne explosive devices are generally referred to as shells and usually have a shorter range than missiles.

The Rocket Harvester is well-balanced unit that makes up the core of GDI's armored forces. Unlike the standard Harvester, it has two guided missile launchers. This makes it excellent against most targets that don't shoot back.
Compared to other units used for a similar role (such as Mammoth Tanks, MARVs, and Slingshots), the Rocket Harvester is better in almost every way. It loses health much faster and has an incredibly slow speed, along with the ability to harvest tiberium from the ground. Its fire rate is exceptionally slow for a missile unit, and it also has incredibly strong armor that can withstand up to a dozen 5.56x45mm NATO rounds. Along with that, it can crush even the mighty Nod Militant and plant powerful demo charges on nothing. This may sound expensive, but the Rocket Harvester is cheap at only 1400 credits, which is lower than the Mammoth Armed Reclamation Vehicle!
Overall, the Rocket Harvester is an excellent unit that most GDI commanders should include in their armies if possible.

Originally patented by Astro Mfg. in 1957 and first produced in the early 1960's, then produced again in 1975 by Vacumet in time to commemorate America's bi-centennial, these intriguing old promotional toy banks were a big hit back in the day. A specimen even sat in president Kennedy's Oval Office for a time before being passed down to his secretary Mrs. Lincoln, who later had it auctioned off to the highest bidder at just over $1,920.
