Neil deGrasse Tyson (born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. He is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space and a research associate in the department of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. From 2006 to 2011, he hosted the educational science television show NOVA ScienceNow on PBS and has been a frequent guest on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Real Time with Bill Maher. Since 2009, he has hosted the weekly radio show Star Talk. I have formed a theory about the composition and origins of the Minecraft solar system using basic astrophysics from observations of the night sky and knowledge of the real solar system. (p.s. Like any theory, this one has holes. Can you spot them?). There's also a FAQ below: Q: Sun's don't turn into black dwarfs until after they explode. Wouldn't this wipe out all life? A: Indeed it would. However it's entirely possible for life to arise AFTER the explosion. In this case, intelligent life would have millions or billions of years to respond to this threat. Q: Doesn't the moon having phases negate your "second planet" theory? A: No. It's always roughly opposite the sun. There can be slight variations in orbit that affect its lighting. Q: Wouldn't the gravity of the sun crush anything in its atmosphere? A: Conventionally, yes. But we're assuming that a civilization has the technology to store energy and ignite their home planet, so it stands to reason that they would have the technology to negate that gravity. Maybe that's why there is a huge void under the bedrock. Q: You can't just blow up a planet and turn it into a sun. A: That's not a question. Anyways, this society had millions of years to adapt to a fading sun. This would likely lead to a plethora of creative ways to store and utilize energy, and I'm sure that given a million years to figure it out, they would come up with a solution. Maybe they ignited the atmosphere. Maybe they stripped the crust and exposed the core. Maybe they pulled energy from another dimension. A dying star gives you a long time to figure things out. Q: How do you transport an entire planet's worth of "stone, dirt, and life" A: Again, this isn't a fast process. Multiple trips over a few million years gives you enough time to get things done. NASA | Swift: A Decade of Game-changing Astrophysics

Over the past decade, NASA's Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer has proven itself to be one of the most versatile astrophysics missions ever flown. It remains the only satellite capable of precisely locating gamma-ray bursts -- the universe's most powerful explosions -- and monitoring them across a broad range of wavelengths using multiple instruments before they fade from view. "Swift" isn't just a name -- it's a core capability, a part of the spacecraft's DNA. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) typically last less than a minute and Swift detects one event about twice a week. Once Swift observes a GRB, it automatically determines the blast's location, broadcasts the position to the astronomical community, and then turns toward the site to investigate with its own sensitive telescopes. In addition to its studies of GRBs, Swift conducts a wide array of observations of other astrophysical phenomena. A flexible planning system enables astronomers to request Swift "target-of-opportunity" (TOO) observations, which can be commanded from the ground in as little as 10 minutes, or set up monitoring programs to observe specific sources at time intervals ranging from minutes to months. The system can schedule up to 75 independent targets a day. Earlier this year, Swift ranked highly in NASA's 2014 Senior Review of Operating Missions and will continue its enormously productive scientific work through at least 2016. Title: Choose Your Own Adventure: Multiplicity of Planets among the Smallest Stars Abstract: The Solar System furnishes the most familiar planetary architecture: many planets, orbiting nearly coplanar to one another. However, the most common planetary systems in the Milky Way orbit much smaller M dwarf stars, and these may present a very different blueprint. The Kepler data set has furnished more than 100 exoplanets orbiting stars half the mass of the sun and smaller. Half of these planets reside in systems with at least one additional planet. I investigate the proposition of self-similarity in this sample: whether a single architecture explains the multi-planet yield of Kepler. In fact, the data much prefer a model with two distinct modes of planet formation around M dwarfs, which occur in roughly equal measure. One mode is one very similar to the Solar System in terms of multiplicity and coplanarity, and the other is very dissimilar. I discuss whether stellar properties are predictive of one final architecture over the other, and describe implications in the search for life. Ultimately, the deluge of forthcoming exoplanet discoveries will require cheap observables to prioritize precious followup resources, and I'll describe how to leverage planet multiplicity to maximize science return.

One question that I have been asked a lot over the years is “what is the difference between astronomy and astrophysics?” More surprisingly I have frequently run into people who confuse the words astronomy and astrology. We will take a voyage through time and see how astronomy, astrophysics and yes even astrology are connected. We will explore how human understanding of the universe around us has evolved from an Earth centered view to our modern cosmology, of an expanding universe, where the Earth is just one world among many. About the speaker: Michael did his graduate work at the University of Calgary, where he worked on searching for extra-solar planets in globular clusters and converted a cold war era satellite tracking telescope to be used to search to asteroids and variable stars. Since completing his MSc, he has worked for various observatories writing telescope control software. Currently he works at the University of Toronto managing the telescopes and developing demonstration equipment used for undergrad classes.

Thursday, July 30, 2:00 pm ET: NSF-funded Physics Frontiers Centers (PFCs) are pushing the frontiers of science across the disciplines of physics. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics Center for Evolution of the Elements (JINA-CEE) studies unknown aspects of nuclear processes that naturally occur in the universe to explain the origin of the elements and to reveal the properties of dense matter in cosmic environments. At 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT on Thursday, July 30, the NSF Physics Division will host a live hour-long Google Hangout with JINA-CEE. We’ll talk with the JINA-CEE Director and other members about the exciting science going on there and its innovative activities. You’ll even be able to participate in the discussion by submitting a question on Twitter using #NSFLive. Facing costs of this magnitude, availability of engineering tools for prediction of performance and design optimization is imperative. Establishment of simulation models combining different technical disciplines such as Structural Dynamics, Control Engineering, Optics and Thermal Engineering is indispensable. Such models are normally called Integrated Models because they involve many different disciplines. The models will play an increasingly larger role for design of future interdisciplinary optical systems in space or on ground. The book concentrates on integrated modeling of optical and radio telescopes but the techniques presented will be applicable to a large variety of systems. Hence, the book will be of interest to optical and radio telescope designers, designers of spacecrafts that include optical systems, and to designers of various complex defense systems. The book may also find use as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses within the field. "Adaptive Optics" is an exciting and relatively new field, originally dedicated to correction for blurring when imaging through the atmosphere. Although this objective is still of high importance, the concept of Adaptive Optics has recently evolved further. Today, the objective is not only to correct for atmospheric turbulence effects but also for a range of static and dynamical telescope aberrations. The notion of adaptive optics has expanded to the field of "Wavefront Control", correcting for a variety of system aberrations. Wavefront control systems maintain form and position of optical elements with high precision under static and dynamical load. In many ways, such systems replace the steel structures of traditional optical systems, thereby providing much lighter systems with a performance not possible before. Integrated Modeling is the foremost tool for studies of Wavefront Control for telescopes and complex optics and is therefore now of high importance. Springer has recently published two books on telescopes, "Reflecting Telescope Optics" by R. Wilson, and "The Design and Construction of Large Optical Telescopes" by P. Bely. Noting that a new (and expensive) generation of Extremely Large Telescopes with apertures in the 30-100 m range is on the way, the present book on integrated modeling is a good match to the existing books and an appropriate specialization and continuation of some subjects dealt with in those books.
