Lost is a short film from Boomarang Entertainment in which a guy (Beaumont) returning to Los Angeles from touring Europe struggles to reconnect to his home life. Frustrated with the various situations that happen throughout the day he begins to psychotically lash out against them before he violently finally snaps. This film is basically about how much can go wrong in a person's life all at once. It starts out with his luggage being lost, and then ultimately ends up with every good thing in his life being lost as well. The film itself is interspersed with quick edits of what he's actually thinking rather than what he's saying, which gives an interesting insight into the character. The film itself is just a short, but manages to tell the story quite well. While there are a few amusing aspects to the film, it's mostly a serious story and leaves you really kind of feeling for the guy whose life has just spiraled out of control through no fault of his own.

Mitchel ('Colin Farrell') just got out of jail and wants to stay legitimate but his friends involved in the messy London underground fear him and wants him to join them again but Mitchel tries his best to stay away. He gets himself a job as a bodyguard for a retired actress Charlotte ('Keira Knightley' (qv)) who is still hot news for the paparazzi. Mitchell, through his friend Billy eventually meets the underground Don by the name of Gant ('Ray Winstone (I)' (qv)) who wants Mitch to work for him because of Mitch's reputations. While working together Mitch and Charlotte fall in love. Gant asks Billy to get the guy who sent Mitch to jail but it turns out to be the wrong one, Gant kills the guy in front of Mitch and lets Mitch know that he has to work for him now that Mitch has seen him commit the murder but Mitch refuses. Gant keeps trying to force Mitch to his side promising him good ranks and positions but he has to let go of Charlotte but Mitch turns him down even threatens him to stop trying making Gant really angry. Now Mitch has to suffer the consequences.

While they're on vacation in the Southwest, Rae finds out her man Michael spent their house money on a classic car, so she dumps him, hitching a ride to Vegas for a flight home. A kid promptly steals Michael's car, leaving him at the Zip & Sip, a convenience store. Three bumbling robbers promptly stage a hold up. Two take off with the cash stranding the third, with a mysterious crate, just as the cops arrive. The robber takes the store hostage. As incompetent cops bring in a SWAT team and try a by-the-book rescue, Michael has to keep the robber calm, find out what's in the crate, aid the negotiations, and get back to Rae. The Stockholm Syndrome asserts its effect.

Chubunka is the self-made head of the rackets in the sleazy boardwalk community of Neptune City, a low-rent version of Coney Island. He has become infatuated with a sultry nightclub chanteuse and lavishes her with gifts and attention, spending money on her that might better go to maintaining his hold on his operation. His obsession with her, as well as his pride, clouds his judgment as Cornell, a much more ruthless hoodlum, moves in on Chubunka's territory, bribes and threatens his associates, and compromises his operation. As if in a Greek tragedy, the petty gangster's weaknesses conspire to cause his downfall.

United States Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, was joined by business, labor and municipal officials, who spoke about the positive impact the Keystone Pipeline System has had on the local and state economies. “I guess this is probably the most studied pipeline in American history. It’s really kind of bizarre that this one pipeline has gotten so much attention and has become almost a symbol, or political symbol, and we’ve sort of forgotten what the facts are,” explains U.S. Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas, while visiting Beaumont, Texas. “People don’t often recognize that an outsource of refining and a whole lot of other stuff, chemicals that are made that go into things like a cell phone, and it all starts with a barrel of oil and natural gas as the building blocks. So nine million manufacturing jobs in the United States might all be dependent on something being refined that is made into something else,” explains Beaumont Chamber of Commerce President Jim Rich. “We’d like to see this pipeline approved. I think doing business with Canada is a much better option than the other options that we have with other countries around the world” says Greg Gentry, Vice-President and General Manager of the Valero Port Arthur Refinery. “I think people need to understand that if there is a breach anywhere along that pipeline that these satellite monitors they can immediately shut it off. I’m in a unique position because I represent a city that sits on pipelines and it’s not a very comfortable feeling. But at the same time I realize that if we are going to continue to improve on the economy of the nation, on the economy of our local entities, that we have got to continue doing the things that are necessary to make that happen.” explains Port Arthur Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince. “The time has come and passed. It’s time for the president to support this as he’s frequently spoken about the U.S. needing to improve its infrastructure. BEAUMONT-By Jennifer Gordy A leader credited with changing the Beaumont skyline, healing labor and management relations in the 70's and re-couping millions of lost dollars for the city has died. Former Mayor Maury Meyers died yesterday after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 82 Former Mayor Pro Tem and friend, Calvin Williams, says, "You couldn't find anyone who was born in Beaumont, such as myself, who had a greater passion than Maury Meyers. I mean he was really genuine and wanted it to be the best it could be." Meyers served two terms as Mayor of Beaumont from 1978 to 1982 and again from 1986 to 1990. One of his major accomplishments: Improving labor/management relations. Business leader and friend, Jim Yarbrough says, "Back in those days our construction costs were high. We had violence on the picket lines. We had strikes almost continuously. And the labor management situation was not good and we had a bad reputation of being a bad place to do business." Meyers worked closely with labor and Gulf States Utilities to bring its headquarters to downtown Beaumont, proving to management that labor in Beaumont could finish a project on time and under budget. Edison Plaza was built under Meyers' watch and remains the focal point of the downtown Beaumont skyline. Meyers believed in a progressive Beaumont. Yarbrough says, "He saw the opportunity that existed for opening up Liberty and Laurel as one way streets which took a tremendous traffic load off of Calder." And the city named the bridge after him. He was also credited with bridging the gap in race relations. Williams says, "I thought that he was coming in from the establishment and I had my defenses up and everything because we had had so much turmoil on the council. And, come to find out he was the most genuine person you would ever want to meet, as nice as he could be, a perfect gentleman and I really did enjoy our relationship and it extended far beyond our time on the council." A man with big dreams for Beaumont.. He organized a nationally recognized Economic Summit. Economic development was the 'centerpiece' of his administration, not just bringing in new business. but, keeping exisiting companies in town. Yarbrough says, "He was very active in telling people already in Beaumont, thank you for having a plant in Beaumont and thank you for your financial contribution you make." Williams adds, "Maury never lost his passion for a better Beaumont. He always wanted Beaumont to be the very best." MEMORIAL SERVICE: A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014, 3:30 p.m., at Temple Emanuel, 1120 Broadway Street, Beaumont, Texas 77701. BEAUMONT - by Lauren Huet One and a half million people have moved to Texas in the past four years, and the Texas Department of Transportation is now preparing for a lot of people to move to Southeast Texas. Wednesday, TXDOT held a transportation summit in Beaumont to help the region keep pace with the growth. Sheri Arnold is the president of a local commercial real estate brokerage. She came to the TXDOT transportation summit at the Elegante Hotel to keep her business up to date. "For me always needing to know where the transportation modes are going to be, how can we best serve our clients by knowing exactly where things are going to be headed," said Arnold. Recently her business has seen a large increase in demand. The project to deepen the Sabine-Neches ship channel is a big reason. "Right now what we're seeing," said Arnold, "the changes that are going on with the deepening project, and with so much influx of energy related projects, we're seeing a tremendous change in demand." TXDOT says Southeast Texas is expecting 100 billion dollars in industrial growth within 10 years, and needs to prepare for more people moving into the area. "A byproduct of a robust economy is increased traffic, so it's a good thing," said TXDOT's District Engineer of the Beaumont District, Tucker Ferguson, "but we're trying to do whatever we can to minimize the slow downs and congestion of traffic and work towards that end." The Texas Department of Transportation says traffic on the highways, waterways, and railroads is all connected. The summit addresses Southeast Texas's transportation needs so it's not caught off guard by a large increase in traffic. "This is a collaboration of transportation in general, rail and road and water, and it takes all three points of the triangle to work," said Clayton Henderson with the Sabine Neches Navigation District. Henderson says projects like the Sabine Neches Waterway Deepening and Widening Project are causing industry to expand. He says it's important for local leaders to work together. "We can bring something in on a ship, but if it just has to sit on the ship and can't get on rail, and can't get on the highway to go be delivered to that grocery store, then it's not doing much good. Same thing goes for what we do mostly in this area, which is crude refining, so that product has to get to market," said Henderson. Meeting, planning, and preparing for growth. "It brings a real excitement in the air," said Arnold, "it reminds you of boomtown, maybe in 1901, in Spindletop." This was TXDOT's first transportation summit in Beaumont. It hopes to make it an annual event.

BEAUMONT - by Kara Dixon Douget's Rice Mill has been operating in Southeast Texas for more than three decades. Vice president Greg Devillier said the rice industry has been profitable for for the past few years. "The past year, the price of rice has dropped pretty good," said Devillier. On Wednesday, President Obama announced steps the White House will take to establish a relationship with Cuba. One of them is to lessen restrictions that would allow commercial travel and business between the countries. Devillier said that lifted embargo will help the rice industry. "We get another buyer of U.S. grown rice. It always helps the price of rice," Devillier said. The embargo was put in place by Congress in 1960 shortly after the Cuban Revolution and influx of Cuban Exiles to the U.S. Devillier said the embargo was not a great idea because Cuba was the rice industry's top customer. "My understanding of the embargo is that we can't sell products to Cuba. That doesn't make business sense at all because at the time the embargo came, they were our top customer," said Devillier. Retired Lamar University professor Dr. Bruce Drury does not think the embargo has been effective. If lifted, he said it may take time for anyone to feel the effects. "They don't have any money right now," said Dr.Drury. "They've got to change the economy and generate some money." President Obama's statements on Cuba have received mixed reaction on Capitol Hill. Texas District 1U.S. House Republican Representative Randy Weber released a statement. Weber said there was no communication between the President Obama and Congress regarding the numerous policy changes. "The President needs to come to Congress moving forward with anymore policy changes that greatly affect this nation's economy and well-being," said Weber. "These policy changes will have a direct impact on Southeast Texas, including economic ones. I will stay active in the debate particularly through my role on the foreign affairs committee to ensure that what's done, is in the best interests of Texas District 14," Weber said. Drury said since Congress voted to put the embargo in place, they also have to lift it. He thinks it will pass. He also said the Cuban government needs to do its part. "It all depends on President Castro and his government turning things around allowing people to express ideas, establishing businesses and allowing foreign capital into the country," Drury said. If the Cuban economy makes money, he said rice isn't the only industry that would prosper. "They'll not only buy rice, they'll buy automobiles, heavy equipment...all sorts of things. It will be a win win for everybody," Drury said. While it is not certain what the outcome may be if the embargo is lifted, he believes the humanitarian effects may outweigh the economic effect. "It will be much better for the Cubans. It will be much better for the Cuban-Americans and much better for Americans," Drury said. Music is just one of the many things at the Crockett Street Cinco De Mayo celebration. The celebration was hosted by the beaumont chapter of Lulac and La Voz, a hispanic radio. People enjoyed a live mariachi band from Houston and traditional folkloriko dances from the Mexican heritage society of Port Arthur. Organizers say although the day was a rather small victory for Mexico, it's more of a day to celebrate all hispanic cultures coming together.

Bill proposes to enforce sexual assault policies

BEAUMONT-by Kara Dixon Texas House Representative Poncho Nevarez filed a bill in January that would require higher education institutions to have sexual assault policies. House Bill 699 would require colleges and universities to review and approve sexual assault policies every two years. Lamar University is using education to combat sexual assault on their campuses. Lamar University Police Corporal Monica Ryan said she covers the assault cases at the university. "It's going to happen It happens on every campus. We just want the students to know they can come to us or any faculty...staff and report it if they've been sexually assaulted," Ryan said. Ryan said in 2013 and 2014, there were three to four reported cases of sexual assault. This past fall, the school implemented "Think About It", an online course required for new students. "It tells them about sexual assault...harassment...different types of things that can be reported. It's the educational thing for them when they're coming into college," she said. Ryan said the number of sexual assaults are under reported nationwide. When cases are reported, the department investigates the report, then sends it to the Title IX office, and it's then given to the District Attorney's Office. Ryan said there are many resources to help victims of sexual assault. Many of them include anonymous submissions. She wants students to know the department and school can help them in their time of need. "Everything that makes you feel uncomfortable, if you're life is in danger, or maybe an assault that's about to happen....unwanted gestures then, it needs to be reported," Ryan said.

BEAUMONT - Jessica Crawford A Texas senate bill could change the price of tuition for many Texas students. If the bill becomes law, it could repeal the Dream Act, which allows undocumented students in the state to pay in-state tuition for college. "A lot of people that come from all over the world, you know, different countries they come to America to have a better life," says Javier Flores, a member of the only Latino interest fraternity at Lamar University. "One Of those is to get that education." Through the Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc., Flores knows a lot of "dreamers" or undocumented students from other countries who are able to pay in-state tuition because of the Dream Act. "You get a better job opportunity, a better salary," says Flores. "That's why my dad since I was little pushed me forward to go to college and what not." Some people who want to repeal the Dream Act says it rewards illegal immigration. "A lot of folks feel that those types of bills encourage the influx of undocumented individuals," says Joe Evans, the executive director of the Republican Party of Jefferson County. "Especially minors." Opponents of the Dream Act also say it costs the state too much money. "At some point, we're going to reach a point where we can't continue to fund those types of intiatives and we lose out on fundiong for Texas students," says Evans. Vernice Monroe, who works to promote multiculturalism at Lamar University, works closely with students. She says students who get college degrees can give back to Texas. "Education is linked to occupation which is linked to income," says Monroe. "And so everyone preaches 'go get a college degree.'" There are about two months left in the Texas legislative session. Flores says his friends can't take their minds off the bill. "It puts weight on their shoulders," says Flores. "Finals are coming up. We're trying to get good grades and now my friend that are dreamers have this in mind." Flores says he can't imagine the consequences of Texas repealing the Dream Act. "Just thinking about it breaks my heart," he says.
