The border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti functions as a free trade zone. Twice a week, the gates open and people from both sides congregate to buy goods to bring back to their respective countries. The Dajabon border crossing is one of the main border crossings where this commerce occurs, and also acts as a point of passage where Haitian migrants frequently enter and exit the Dominican Republic. In recent days, thousands of Dominican Haitians have been scrambling to complete a "regularization" process in order to avoid deportation after a court ruling effectively rendered them stateless. There were reports of small-scale initial deportations occurring Thursday, June 18, the day after the deadline to complete the process. On a larger scale, many families at risk of detainment and deportation are voluntarily self-deporting in order to avoid run-ins with authorities. In the latest dispatch, VICE News rides across Dajabon border crossing with two families self-deporting back to Haiti after they failed to apply for residency, and gets an up-close look at the new detention centers set up by Dominican immigration authorities to enforce the new law. http://democracynow.org - The Dominican Republic is set to begin what some are calling "ethnic purging," placing the fate of hundreds of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent into limbo. Half a million legally stateless people could be sent to Haiti this week, including those who have never stepped foot in Haiti and don’t speak the language. In 2013, a Dominican constitutional court ruling stripped the citizenship of children born to Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic as far back as 1929, retroactively leaving tens of thousands without citizenship. Today marks the deadline for undocumented workers to register their presence in the Dominican Republic or risk mass deportation. However, only 300 of the 250,000 Dominican Haitians applying for permits have reportedly received them. Many have actively resisted registering as foreigners, saying they are Dominican by birth and deserve full rights. Dominican authorities have apparently organized a fleet of buses and set up processing centers on the border with Haiti, creating widespread fears of mass roundups. The Dominican Republic’s decision to denationalize hundreds of thousands of people has sparked international outcry. We are joined by the acclaimed Haitian-American novelist Edwidge Danticat. Spanish/Nat Political leaders in the Dominican Republic have pleaded for an end to the violence that has plagued the country's current electoral campaign. The election, which takes place in 10 days time, has sparked confrontations between rival supporters of the main political parties. At least five people have been killed in recent clashes. Rival political supporters exchange gunfire in the backstreets of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. Violence has escalated as the country gears up to presidential elections on May 18th. The elections are for the Chamber of Deputies, Senators and various positions within local government. Leaders of all political parties in the Dominican Republic called for a end to the violence during the electoral campaign. At least five people have been killed. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We would like to call on the Dominican people, all sectors and political parties: violence does not lead to anything. These kind of actions cause grief to Dominican families, they do not add anything to the debate of the solutions to the country's problems and things like these should not take place." SUPER CAPTION: Francisco Dominguez, prosecutor The funeral of a police commander this week killed in the street battles has brought condemnation from all parties. The Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and the Dominican Liberal Party (PLD) are the two main parties in the country. All five people killed were members of one of the two main parties. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The PLD (Dominican Liberation Party) must make a strong public call on those who accompany the military to stop this wave of blood caused by the culture of violence." SUPER CAPTION: Hatuey de Camps, Secretary General Dominican Revolutionary Party On Tuesday, the president of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, called for the conflicts to be ended. Fernandez said those responsible for the crimes could not justify their actions with political excuses. But the leader of the opposition party, PRD, Jose Francisco Pena Gomez, has accused the government of promoting intolerance and inciting the violence. In the meantime the street battles continue. So Mr. Skerrit said at a rally not too long ago, in St. Joseph, that he wants to give the kids tablets. Now correct me if I am wrong but 15 years has passed(10 years since he is in prime minister) and no tablet has been given to the kids. Now I find it fishy that the vatican persons came down and anointed the brother and now there is the allocation of tablets for kids since, according to the people, they can't afford it(This was said in Trafalga). Thomson Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight review to Puetro Plata in the Dominican Republic - G-TUIA

This is a flight review of our Thomson Airways Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight to Puetro Plata (Gregorio Luperón International Airport) in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. We flew in economy class called "Dreamliner Class" on the Dreamliner. All footage of the journey is filmed from the economy class cabin. Our flight crew was mainly British with a Scandinavian stewardess on board too. Our Thomson Airways Dreamliner (Boeing 787-8) had registration number G-TUIA and was named "Living the Dream". Our flight started at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark and the aircraft passengers where mainly Scandinavians (Swedish and Danish nationality). Our charter holiday trips where booked via Star Tour (name for TUI in Denmark) (Fritidsresor as TUI are called in Swedish) which is the same as TUI travel in the UK and Germany. I believe TUI is called ARKE in the Netherlands, is that correct? Our Dreamliner flight review begins at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark. The viewer can follow our arrival at the airport (Terminal 3) before we walk down to Terminal 2 where out Thomson Airways check-in desk is located. We then check-in at the self check-in counters and the drop our luggage at the Thomson Airways Baggage Drop Off area. We then make our way up to the departures area via the tax free shopping area. Once through the tax free shopping area we walk over to the windows where there is a little snow storm outside, the first aircraft we see is the Qatar Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner being towed away. We walk around the airport for awhile before we again pass another passport control (2 x passport control because we are leaving the European Union). We then arrive at our departure gate area (our gate was C29) where we get our first glimpse of our Thomson Airways Dreamliner passenger aircraft which is rather covered in snow. It is here at the gate that we are told that the flight is delayed as there is a problem with the aircraft's water supply system which means that there is no water for the lavatories or tea and coffee. We eventually board the plane just over 1 hour delayed. As we pushback and start taxiing we get some nice views of the Thai Airways and Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft also standing at the C area gates, We also get some nice views of the terminal building construction project (I believe that the terminal is being upgraded to be able to handle the giant Airbus A380 aircraft, which currently do not fly to Copenhagen Airport. The aircraft then makes it´s way for de-icing where the viewer gets a cabin view at the deicing process of a Dreamliner Boeing 787 aircraft. After de-icing we taxi over to our runway for take off (Runway 04R), from this point our journey begins. Watch out for economy class cabin views where you can see the 3-3-3 seat arrangements, view the in flight entertainment system (IES) a touchscreen used mainly for movies, TV shows and the route and speed of the aircraft (also the reading light and stewardess calling button are found on the touch screen). We also visit the galley and lavatory. Inflight meals which we have prepaid also feature in the footage. We had one main meal and then one complimentary snack box just before landing.Also watch out for the famous Dreamliner mood lights, the fancy new self dimming windows the huge General Electric e ith their characteristic noise reducing chevrons (or saw teeth) and much more. Dominica was first discovered by the Spanish, then colonized by the French and British before finally obtaining independence in 1978. Dominica has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean"[5] for its unspoiled natural beauty. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world's second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. The island features lush mountainous rainforests, home of many rare plant, animal, and bird species. There are xeric areas in some of the western coastal regions, but heavy rainfall occurs inland. The island has 365 rivers. The Sisserou parrot (also known as the imperial amazon), is found only on Dominica and is the island's national bird. It is featured on the national flag. Dominica's economy is heavily dependent on tourism and agriculture. Christopher Columbus named the island after the day of the week on which he spotted it, a Sunday (dies Dominica in Latin), 3 November 1493. In the hundred years after Columbus's landing, Dominica remained isolated. At the time it was inhabited by the Island Caribs, or Kalinago people, and over time more settled there after being driven from surrounding islands, as European powers entered the region. The people of Spain left the island due to isolation and the fierce Island Carib warriors that inhabited the island at the moment. France had a colony for several years, importing African slaves to work on its plantations. In this period, the Antillean Creole language developed. France formally ceded possession of Dominica to Great Britain in 1763. Great Britain established a small colony on the island in 1805. Britain abolished slavery throughout the British Empire in 1834. By 1838, Dominica became the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by an ethnic African majority. In 1896, the United Kingdom took governmental control of Dominica, turning it into a Crown colony. Half a century later, from 1958 to 1962, Dominica became a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation. On 3 November 1978, Dominica became an independent nation.

Spanish/Nat Government austerity measures have prompted protests in the Dominican Republic. President Leonel Fernandez' decision to devalue the peso and raise petrol prices has sent the cost of basic goods soaring. Protestors have mounted barricades in poor neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo and striking transport workers have brought the capital to a virtual standstill. The barricades continue to blaze in Santo Domingo. Youths armed with Molotov cocktails show their fury at the country's tight fiscal policies. Anger has grown since the new measures begun to bite, deepening the poverty of the inhabitants of marginal neighbourhoods like this one. Dominicans have been asked to tighten their belts as the government tackles a 2-point-one (b) billion peso deficit, equal to 140 (m) million dollars. The economic adjustment programme was drawn up by a group of modernising economists brought in by President Leonel Fernandez to resuscitate the country's failing economy. A three per cent rise in petrol prices have left a nation hooked on cheap fuel in a state of shock. The Dominican Republic's largest bus company went on strike Wednesday, leaving 40 per cent of the more than two (m) million inhabitants without transportation. Transport unionists leaders accuse the government of intransigence. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) What this is an action in support of our demands and intransigence on the part of the government, an irresponsible attitude. They don't want to comply with their agreements, instead they want to carry on increasing and becoming ever more corrupt. SUPER CAPTION: Juan Hubieres, road transport workers union leader More serious for people's buying power was a move to devalue the peso by 14 per cent. It's sent the price of staple foods soaring out of the reach of may modest pockets. Even those well off enough to shop in the relatively costly and luxurious supermarkets are feeling the pinch. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Well, whereas before you needed a thousand or two thousand pesos to buy what you needed, now you need about five hundred pesos more. SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop But the measures are hurting the poor most of all. Many Dominicans could only just make ends meet before the rises. Now many of them say they just don't know how they'll be able to feed and clothe their families. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) I don't think they should put the price of food up for poor families. President Hipolito Mejia, who has presided over the worst economic crisis in decades, is trailing in polls behind former President Leonel Fernandez, who has campaigned under the slogan: "Progress is coming back." It is a welcome message in a nation where inflation has soared to 43 percent in the past year and the value of the peso has sunk to new lows. An estimated 16 percent are unemployed, while many others search for work week by week. Dominicans have grown impatient with years of steady blackouts, sometimes sparking violent protests in the country of 8.8 (m) million. Mejia has blamed the economic troubles on a world recession and a fraud scandal that toppled the country's second-largest bank last year, costing the treasury 2.2 (b) billion U.S. dollars. Mejia's aid programmes for single mothers and rural housing have won him loyal followers, but others blame him for the downturn in an economy that is a major market for U.S. goods and a producer of textiles and agricultural products. Fernandez, an articulate technocrat, has promised a return to tight fiscal policies, cutting spending while renegotiating much of the 7.6 (b) billion U.S. dollars foreign debt. Mejia, an affluent farmer-turned-president, says Fernandez is out to protect the rich and treats the poor like criminals. The latest poll shows Fernandez with 54 percent to Mejia's 30 percent, followed by Eduardo Estrella with 10 percent. The Gallup survey questioned 1,200 people during the first week of May and has a 3 percentage point error margin. No campaigning was allowed on Saturday following days of rallies with booming music and busloads of party loyalists riding through the streets waving party flags. While the Dominican Republic hasn't seen armed struggles recently like those in neighbouring Haiti, fraud has seriously tainted voting as recently as 1994. This year, some 200 international observers are on hand from the Organisation of American States and other groups. Amid complaints of suspected rigging attempts, the Electoral Board allowed parties to cross-check their voter lists with a master list on Saturday, then announced no irregularities were found. St. Vincent belongs to the Windward-Islands and it is located in the north of Trinidad and Tobago. The volcanic island lies north of the small island Bequia, which is strongly influenced by whaling. Because of its diverse flora and fauna, the Caribbean Island Dominica is also known as the nature island. Diseases are cured traditionally by herbs growing here. St Vincent and the Grenadines are in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. The natives are the descendants of the caribs, which immigrated from Venezuela. St. Vincent is a volcanic Island and forms with forty other islands the island state St. Vincent and the Grenadines. 1498 Christopher Columbus arrived in St. Vincent where the Caribs lived. It remained very long uncolonised It was occupied by the British in the 18th century. Whale hunting was an important part of the local economy. Today there is an agreement with greenpeace to hunt four Humpback whales a year for the own consumption. Life in Crusoe, the capital of Domenica, is much more hectic. It has the unofficial name “The Nature Island”. Domenica is very mountainous and has a lot of rivers and waterfalls. Chistopher Columbus did not set a food on the island, but gave her its name from “Domingo”, Sunday, Domenica was the last island colonised by the Europeans because of the resistance of the caribs. Herbs are used for healing, the very traditional medical knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation. Canoes are constructed from a single treetrunk, St Vincent and Domenica have the only Carib reservations in the whole Caribbean. It is here that the descendants of the people who gave the name to the region continued to live.They are the last reminents who long resisted the colonial ambition of the European and never allowed to be enslaved by Hannes Naderhirn, 2010, future production&promotion; ------- Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean. This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs. In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago. The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

The two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre form the French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe like two butterfly wings, separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery. Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes. When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1463, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848. The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean. The history of the Dominican Republic is the result of an unlikely mixture of influences; nowhere else will you find a blending of European, African, and native Taíno Indian cultures. These distinct cultures still drive the social identity of the people today. Every aspect of their food, music, art, sports and religion provides a unique insight into the development of their country. In a single day you can experience both ancient and modern cultures from around the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food. As a former Spanish Colony, many of its dishes carry a familiar Latin American feel. Lots of rice, beans, meat and seafood can be found in their cuisine. However, strong influences from its heritage give the meals a unique twist. Traditional Taíno dishes are still made featuring yucca, plantains, and potatoes; as well as African recipes using similar native ingredients. The most common food on the Island is called La Bandera, or "The Flag." It is made with meat, rice, and red beans. Making the dish distinctly Dominican, many will also serve it with friend plantains called "tostones." As a culture that loves to eat, the meal will often continue beyond this first course. Be prepared to try boiled green plantain known as "mangú," "pasteles en hojas," which are wrapped turnovers cooked in banana leaves; and various casseroles, stews, and meat dishes featuring braised goat, pork and chicken rinds. In addition to their rich culinary history, Dominicans also demonstrate their unmistakable heritage through art. The island is filled with many different types of bright and colorful artwork. Jewelry made out of amber, bone, horn and coconut husk can be found at local markets and shops, where the native Taíno influence can still be seen. In addition to jewelry, Dominican artists also use clay, porcelain, hemp, and guano to make both decorative and religious figurines. Many of these figurines point to the religious history of the island. Its inhabitants are mostly Catholic, followed by other denominations of Christianity. Although food and art are important parts of Dominican culture, the true life of the culture is baseball. Much more than a national pastime, baseball is a major source of national pride and identity. In fact, almost 40 percent of players in the U.S. Major League Baseball and minor leagues come from Latin America- with most of those coming from the Dominican Republic. Some of their most famous Dominican players include Pedro Martinez, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Sammy Sosa. As the first city founded in the Americas, the Dominican Republic's capital city of Santo Domingo boasts an incredible collection of museums, historic sites, art and music. The Colonial City, located inside Santo Domingo, is the first city of the America's; it features the first street, hospital, university and cathedral in the Americas. It is believed that the body of Christopher Columbus still resides on this island that he landed on hundreds of years ago. There are many historic museums and buildings that take a unique look into Dominican culture. Among them are the Alcázar de Colon (Fortress of Colon), the Reloj de Sol (the Sun Clock) and the monasterio de los Padres Dominicos (the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers). Much of the Dominican culture can be experienced through its inspiring museums, food, and music. However, to truly understand the depth of the Dominican People, you must experience Carnival. This annual celebration of independence spans the entire country, with each city putting on their own unique version of the festival. They fill the streets with colorful masks, music, and of course, dancing. However, Carnival didn't always look this way. It is actually the culmination of all three cultures; native Taíno, Spanish and African. Brought together, they create a swirl of energy and culture that you can't find anywhere else. Carnival lasts throughout the month of February. Other Dominican Holidays include January 26th, the day of the patriarch Juan Pablo Duarte; March 9, the day of the patriarch Francisco del Rosario Sánchez; August 16, the Restoration of the Republic; and Constitution Day on November 6. The Caribbean island of Dominica is often confused with the Dominican Republic or simply forgotten about altogether, but it is a place that has its own unique charm. Its known as the Nature Island because of its amazing environment, but its also home to one of the last groups of Carib Indians, the Caribbeans indigenous people. The Caribs lived here before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. Since then, their numbers have dwindled to almost zero in much of the region because of years of brutal treatment from the Spanish, French and British - but in Dominica, hope remains. In the early 20th century, when only about 500 Caribs were left, a 3700 acre territory was established for them on the islands east coast. Now they number around 3000. This video looks at the effect tourism has on Carib culture.

Prime Minister of Dominica, the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit addressed a number of issues in his monthly Press Briefing for May 2015. Among the matters raised included the upcoming 2015/2016 Budget which is slated for Parliament sometime in July. Stakeholders in the Tourism sector will begin benefiting even before the new Budget is passed into law, from decisions made by the Cabinet. As many as fourteen (14) decisions were recently taken by the Cabinet. Most of the decisions were made as a result of requests submitted to us by the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA). Some of the changes require changes to be made to existing legislation and some require the introduction of new legislation. Some examples of the decisions made include: the complete removal of VAT applied to complimentary hotel rooms; the complete removal of VAT applied to meals provided to staff. Our family got tired of the mess going on in the United States and moved to the Caribbean island of Dominica (West Indies) aka Nature Island.
