Karelia (Karelian and Finnish Karjala; Russian: Карелия, Kareliya; Swedish: Karelen), the land of the Karelian peoples, is an area in Northern Europe of historical significance for Finland, Russia, and Sweden. It is currently divided between the Russian Republic of Karelia, the Russian Leningrad Oblast, and Finland (the regions of South Karelia and North Karelia).
Various subdivisions may be called Karelia. Finnish Karelia was a historical province of Finland, now divided between Finland and Russia, often called just Karjala in Finnish. The eastern part of this chiefly Lutheran area was ceded to Russia after the Winter War of 1939-40. This area is the "Karelia" of the Karelian question in Finnish politics.
The Republic of Karelia is a Russian federal subject, including the so-called "East Karelia" with a chiefly Russian Orthodox population.
Within present-day Finland, Karjala refers to regions of South and North Karelia.
Karelia was bitterly fought over by the Swedes and the Novgorod Republic for a period starting in the 13th-century Swedish-Novgorodian Wars. The Treaty of Nöteborg (Finnish: Pähkinäsaaren rauha) in 1323 divided Karelia between the two. Viborg (Finnish: Viipuri) became the capital of the new Swedish province.

Jean Sibelius (
pronunciation (help·info); 8 December 1865 – 20 September 1957) was a Finnish composer of the later Romantic period. His music played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity. His mastery of the orchestra has been described as "prodigious."
The core of Sibelius's oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies. Like Beethoven, Sibelius used each successive work to further develop his own personal compositional style. His works continue to be performed frequently in the concert hall and are often recorded.
In addition to the symphonies, Sibelius's best-known compositions include Finlandia, the Karelia Suite, Valse triste, the Violin Concerto in D minor and The Swan of Tuonela (one of the four movements of the Lemminkäinen Suite). Other works include pieces inspired by the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala; over 100 songs for voice and piano; incidental music for 13 plays; the opera Jungfrun i tornet (The Maiden in the Tower); chamber music; piano music; Masonic ritual music; and 21 separate publications of choral music.

Republic of Karelia is located in the northwest of Russia, taking intervening position between the basins of White and Baltic Seas. It's population in is 634,402. It's capital is the city of Petrozavodsk, which population is 272,101.
There are about 27,000 rivers and 60,000 lakes in Karelia. Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega are the largest lakes in Europe.
The most part of the republic's territory (148,000 km², or 85%) is composed of state forest stock.
Average temperature in January is −8.0 °C (17.6 °F) and +16.4 °C (61.5 °F) in July.

One half of the double temple belonged to the crocodile-headed deity, Sobek, the son of Hathor. Today’s Kom Ombo Temple was divided into two asymmetric parts by its Ptolemaic builders. Within the right section of the building, Sobek was worshipped, while the left half was dedicated to Haroeris. The external surrounding wall of the temple contains several strange pictures and reliefs including portrayals of early medical instruments. A kind of medicine cupboard was carved into the stone. It shows highly developed medical implements, among them a variety of surgical instruments and even forceps. The profession of doctor was popular and widespread throughout ancient Egypt. However, the Gods were also called upon as soon as there was illness as it was believed that medicine alone could not provide a cure. Images of numerous Egyptian rulers adorn the walls. Queen Cleopatra, the legendary last Ptolemaic sovereign, was also immortalized here. Outside the temple there is a “Birth House” next to the small Hathor Chapel. The Mammisi contains the remarkable portrayal of a nursing mother. During the Ptolemaic period each temple contained a Mammisi that was decorated with portrayals and hieroglyphs. Here, the birth of the children of the gods was celebrated. Due to the ancient relics and the double temple of Kom Ombo we have been able to gain an even greater understanding of Egypt’s fascinating past.

King Charles The Fifth deliberately built his palace at this location as it had once been the last bastion of Muslim power in Spain. It thus symbolised the triumph of the Christian world. In addition to the external splendour of the Christian palace the full beauty of its Moorish architecture is only fully revealed by exploring its glorious interior. Thus the despair of the last Nasrides ruler strikes a poignant chord today for, according to legend, when he was forced to abandon his palace to the Christian armies without a fight, his eyed filled with tears as he glanced back at his beloved Alhambra.

Only a few marks in the sand indicate the presence of Man.The Kalahari is often mistakenly described as a desert as in this region in the heart of Botswana it is more like an arid savannah and most visitors are surprised by the exceptionally large biodiversity of the local flora and fauna. On the border of the Central Kalahari Wild Reserve is the luxurious Deception Valley Lodge with first class accommodation and even a swimming pool. It is not only an ideal starting point for various safaris, it is also an ideal place in which to relax after an exhausting tour of the surrounding wilderness. Suddenly, two men appear. They are Bushmen, one of the most legendary ethnic groups in Africa. The Kalahari Bushmen have for more than twenty five thousand years lived in harmony with nature in this semi-desert that is also a hostile environment. However, they have managed to survive without disrupting the ecology of their surroundings. Within the branches of a tree our two guides discover the remains of a dead creature that a lion has left in order that it can retrieve it later in the day. As the tree is surrounded by bones it appears that the lion appears to favour this particular location. We continue our walkabout through the dry savannah while the two bushmen provide us with a very welcome sense of security. Despite its desert-like appearance, the Kalahari contains around two hundred and fifty edible plants. The gathering of plants is one of the main duties of the women while hunting has always been a male domain. Only here in this relatively small area of the Kalahari is there still a home for the legendary Bushmen. Desperate, but far from defeated, they attempt to preserve their cultural heritage for future generations to come.
