This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In life, we want it all. What happens when the opportunities of life overwhelm us? In this personal talk, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin shares the challenges of managing multiple projects and responsibilities, especially as a working mother. She then provides potential solutions for managing life’s many “fires."
Stephanie Herseth Sandlin serves as General Counsel & Vice President of Corporate Development for Raven Industries, Inc., a company that serves the world with technology that helps grow more food, protects natural resources and saves lives.
Prior to joining Raven, she was a Partner at a Washington, D.C., law firm, representing clients on legislative and regulatory matters concerning technology and innovation in agriculture, bioenergy, national security and food safety and nutrition.
Stephanie also served in the United States House of Representatives from 2004-2011 representing South Dakota’s At-Large District. She was the first woman in South Dakota to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and she was the youngest woman serving in Congress during her four terms in office.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. One topic I’ve been working on is “we need to stop pandering to working mothers”. Now don’t get me wrong – I have four kids myself – but my point is we need to make flexible working the norm for men and women, parents and non-parents, so we can stop feeling like working mums are getting special treatment. You’ll also end up with more engaged, satisfied and productive employees. Win-win for everyone.

Susan Redden Makatoa is an award-winning communications expert who has deep experience working with public and private companies, NGOs and government. In her role at Ogilvy PR, she provides strategic counsel on reputation building, advocacy, internal change and issues management. Known for her ‘nose for news’, Susan creates influential and effective campaigns closely aligned with business objectives. Susan also works with Palliative Care Australia and sits on the boards of Tresillian Family Care Centres, Together Let’s and the advisory panel of EWA.
Susan recognises that there is still work to be done in promoting opportunities for women in senior ranks. To this end, the provision of more networking and mentoring opportunities, flexible work practices and the inclusion of suitably-qualified women in shortlists for executive positions are among the suggestions she makes.
Susan also believes in the power of individuals to accelerate this process by changing their own work practices.

Find out all about breastfeeding as a working mom, including how often to pump, how to store breast milk for your bab
How often will I have to pump when I go back to work?
When you're preparing to return to work, it's hard to predict how often you'll need to pump your breasts to provide milk for your baby. Ideally, you will pump at work as often as you would have breastfed your baby at home. Realistically though, mothers often find that in an eight-hour workday they are able to pump during morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Since time is in such short supply, using a pump that allows access to both breasts at the same time is a real help. By double pumping, mothers keep their prolactin (an important lactation hormone) level up, and they may be able to pump in 10-15 minutes rather than 20 to 30 minutes. Many mothers find that double pumping, three times a day during the first few months, gives them enough milk to leave for their caregiver for the next day. As the baby gets older and begins eating solids they may not need to pump as frequently.

"As parents," Katie adds, "we can feel like such failures and experience so much guilt about the things we say and do to our children, and it's always a result of what we're thinking and believing."
Katie uses the example of asking a child to take out the trash to illustrate how we can better interact with our kids when it comes to these common requests for their help.
April, a working mother, joins Katie and Susan to question her upsetting thoughts about being away from her children all day. The most poignant example for her is when she drops her child off at daycare and he cries. She feels guilty that she is choosing work over him. “He should know that I care.” “He should understand that I’m doing something important.” As she questions these thoughts, April begins to be aware of what separates her from her son.
Another mother, Cynthia from Hawaii, does a Worksheet on “Asher the nighttime crasher.” She is frustrated with her son because he won’t go to sleep on his own. After doing The Work, she finds, to her embarrassment and laughter, that she won’t go to sleep on her own.

Many women wonder whether it is possible to balance career demands and family responsibilities. After all in certain sections of society, there is the expectation that to be good mothers, women have to stop working.
Based on the Diversity in the Workplace 2015 survey by TalentCorp and PwC Malaysia, 31% of companies surveyed had no women board member; 19% had no women in top management; and only 10% plan to enhance or implement Flexible Work Arrangements within a year. Does this reflect said cultural expectations, and highlight the need for family and employer support so women can return to work?
We spoke to three women and their families on their journey of returning to the workforce. Stephanie Caunter who heads the Marketing and Communications team at PwC Malaysia has the flexibility to work from home. “I want to be a role model to my children; it is possible to have a career and a family,” she says. Kala Govinthan, an administrator/front desk at Colgate-Palmolive decided to go back to work for financial independence. Fatim Hamimi, a Credit Manager at RHB Banking Group thinks that she has a lot more to contribute to the workforce.
TalentCorp’s Career Comeback Programme initiative was introduced to facilitate the return of women to the workforce. It aims to provide a platform for professional women to relaunch their career after a long hiatus.

In this personal talk, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin shares the challenges of managing multiple projects and responsibilities, especially as a working mother. She then provides potential solutions for managing life’s many “fires."
Stephanie Herseth Sandlin serves as General Counsel & Vice President of Corporate Development for Raven Industries, Inc., a company that serves the world with technology that helps grow more food, protects natural resources and saves lives.
Prior to joining Raven, she was a Partner at a Washington, D.C., law firm, representing clients on legislative and regulatory matters concerning technology and innovation in agriculture, bioenergy, national security and food safety and nutrition.
Stephanie also served in the United States House of Representatives from 2004-2011 representing South Dakota’s At-Large District. She was the first woman in South Dakota to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and she was the youngest woman serving in Congress during her four terms in office.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. One topic I’ve been working on is “we need to stop pandering to working mothers”. Now don’t get me wrong – I have four kids myself – but my point is we need to make flexible working the norm for men and women, parents and non-parents, so we can stop feeling like working mums are getting special treatment. You’ll also end up with more engaged, satisfied and productive employees. Win-win for everyone.

Susan Redden Makatoa is an award-winning communications expert who has deep experience working with public and private companies, NGOs and government. In her role at Ogilvy PR, she provides strategic counsel on reputation building, advocacy, internal change and issues management. Known for her ‘nose for news’, Susan creates influential and effective campaigns closely aligned with business objectives. Susan also works with Palliative Care Australia and sits on the boards of Tresillian Family Care Centres, Together Let’s and the advisory panel of EWA.
Susan recognises that there is still work to be done in promoting opportunities for women in senior ranks. To this end, the provision of more networking and mentoring opportunities, flexible work practices and the inclusion of suitably-qualified women in shortlists for executive positions are among the suggestions she makes.
Susan also believes in the power of individuals to accelerate this process by changing their own work practices.

How often will I have to pump when I go back to work?
When you're preparing to return to work, it's hard to predict how often you'll need to pump your breasts to provide milk for your baby. Ideally, you will pump at work as often as you would have breastfed your baby at home. Realistically though, mothers often find that in an eight-hour workday they are able to pump during morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Since time is in such short supply, using a pump that allows access to both breasts at the same time is a real help. By double pumping, mothers keep their prolactin (an important lactation hormone) level up, and they may be able to pump in 10-15 minutes rather than 20 to 30 minutes. Many mothers find that double pumping, three times a day during the first few months, gives them enough milk to leave for their caregiver for the next day. As the baby gets older and begins eating solids they may not need to pump as frequently.

"As parents," Katie adds, "we can feel like such failures and experience so much guilt about the things we say and do to our children, and it's always a result of what we're thinking and believing."
Katie uses the example of asking a child to take out the trash to illustrate how we can better interact with our kids when it comes to these common requests for their help.
April, a working mother, joins Katie and Susan to question her upsetting thoughts about being away from her children all day. The most poignant example for her is when she drops her child off at daycare and he cries. She feels guilty that she is choosing work over him. “He should know that I care.” “He should understand that I’m doing something important.” As she questions these thoughts, April begins to be aware of what separates her from her son.
Another mother, Cynthia from Hawaii, does a Worksheet on “Asher the nighttime crasher.” She is frustrated with her son because he won’t go to sleep on his own. After doing The Work, she finds, to her embarrassment and laughter, that she won’t go to sleep on her own.

Many women wonder whether it is possible to balance career demands and family responsibilities. After all in certain sections of society, there is the expectation that to be good mothers, women have to stop working.
Based on the Diversity in the Workplace 2015 survey by TalentCorp and PwC Malaysia, 31% of companies surveyed had no women board member; 19% had no women in top management; and only 10% plan to enhance or implement Flexible Work Arrangements within a year. Does this reflect said cultural expectations, and highlight the need for family and employer support so women can return to work?
We spoke to three women and their families on their journey of returning to the workforce. Stephanie Caunter who heads the Marketing and Communications team at PwC Malaysia has the flexibility to work from home. “I want to be a role model to my children; it is possible to have a career and a family,” she says. Kala Govinthan, an administrator/front desk at Colgate-Palmolive decided to go back to work for financial independence. Fatim Hamimi, a Credit Manager at RHB Banking Group thinks that she has a lot more to contribute to the workforce.
TalentCorp’s Career Comeback Programme initiative was introduced to facilitate the return of women to the workforce. It aims to provide a platform for professional women to relaunch their career after a long hiatus.
