Shiraz (
listen (help·info) Persian: شیراز Shīrāz Persian pronunciation: [ʃiːˈrɒːz]) is the sixth most populous city in Iran and is the capital of Fars Province, the city's 2009 population was 1,455,073. Shiraz is located in the southwest of Iran on the Roodkhaneye Khoshk (Dry river) seasonal river. Shiraz has a moderate climate and has been a regional trade center for more than one thousand years.
The earliest reference to the city, as Tiraziš, is on Elamite clay tablets dated to 2000 BC. In the 13th century, Shiraz became a leading center of the arts and letters, thanks to the encouragement of its ruler and the presence of many Persian scholars and artists. Shiraz was the capital of Persia during the Zand dynasty from 1750 until 1781, as well as briefly during the Saffarid period.
Shiraz is known as the city of poets, literature, wine and flowers. The word "shir" in Persian means "lion", but it could also mean "milk". It is also considered by many Iranians to be the city of gardens, due to the many gardens and fruit trees that can be seen in the city. Shiraz has had major Jewish and Christian communities. The crafts of Shiraz consist of inlaid mosaic work of triangular design; silver-ware; pile carpet-weaving and weaving of kilim, called gilim and jajim in the villages and among the tribes. In Shiraz industries such as cement production, sugar, fertilizers, textile products, wood products, metalwork and rugs dominate. Shirāz also has a major oil refinery and is also a major center for Iran's electronic industries: 53% of Iran's electronic investment has been centered in Shiraz. Shiraz is home to Iran's first solar power plant. Recently the city's first wind turbine has been installed above Babakoohi mountain near the city.

Hovhannes Shiraz (Armenian: Հովհաննես Շիրազ) (April 27, 1915, Alexandropol - March 14, 1984, Yerevan) was a notable Armenian poet.
He was born Hovhannes (Onik) Tadevosi Karapetyan in the city of Alexandropol, then part of the Russian Empire (now Gyumri, Armenia). His mother, Astghik was widowed by the Armenian Genocide shortly before his birth. Shiraz grew up in a considerable poverty. His first work called Beginning of Spring was published in 1935. Novelist Atrpet gave the talented poet the epithet "Shiraz", because "this youth's poems have the fragrance of roses, fresh and covered with dew, like the roses of Shiraz" (Shiraz being one of Iran's major cities, famous for its roses and poets). Another version of his pen name is "Shirak azn" - a child of Shirak, the region he was from.
Hovhannes Shiraz studied in Yerevan State University and Moscow Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. In 1958 Shiraz published the first volume of his Knar Hayastani (Lyre of Armenia). The second and third volumes were published in 1965 and 1974. These collections include the best examples of Shiraz's poetry.

"Reisenden wird grundsätzlich empfohlen, Kundgebungen oder Demonstrationen weiträumig zu meiden", ist nur eine von vielen Sicherheitshinweisen auf der Homepage des Auswärtigen Amtes. Ferner existiert eine "Krisenvorsorgeliste", auf die sich alle Deutschen die sich in Iran aufhalten, aufnehmen lassen sollten. Der Iran ist also nur etwas für die Touristen, die sich auf eine fremde Welt einlassen wollen, und die auch Alkoholverbot und andere kulturelle Vorgaben respektieren wollen. Obwohl das Land in der Krisenregion des Nahen und Mittleren Osten liegt, ist es für Touristen in den meisten Regionen recht sicher. So nimmt die Nachfrage nach Reisen in den Iran seit einiger Zeit stark zu.
Seit im Herbst 2013 der als toleranter geltende Präsident Rohani die Wahlen gewann, wird der Gottesstaat im Ausland zunehmend liberaler wahrgenommen. Immer mehr kulturinteressierte Touristen gehen auf Spurensuche nach dem alten Persien und machen sich ein Bild vom Iran der Gegenwart.
3.000 Jahre alt und zwei Millionen Einwohner
Vor allem Isfahan beeindruckt die Reisenden nachhaltig: Isfahan ist rund 3.000 Jahre alt und hat heute knapp zwei Millionen Einwohner. Schah Abbas I. aus der Dynastie der Safawiden erhob die Stadt im Jahr 1598 zu seiner Residenz. Er plante ein modernes Stadtbild, Vorbild war die Paradiesstädte des Koran. Auf einem Areal von einem halben Kilometer Länge entstand der "Meidān-e Schāh", der Platz des Königs. Er entwickelte sich zum Zentrum für Handel und als Gerichtsort.
Sein eigener Palast "Ali Kapu" steht alles überragend in der Mitte. Links befindet sich die große Moschee, die "Schahmoschee" und gleich gegenüber vom Palast das private Bethaus des Herrschers. Schah Abbas war ein Mensch mit Visionen und Fantasien. Ein europäischer Reisender, den die Faszination des Morgenlandes nach Isfahan führte, schreibt über den Königspalast: "Die Schönheit dieses Hauses besteht darin, dass alle Wände von oben bis unten an, mit Gold und köstlichen Gemälden gezieret seyn. Das Gewölb ist gleichfalls überall mit Gold und Farben überzogen, dass in Wahrheit nichts schöneres gesehen werden kann".
Isfahan war zu dieser Zeit nicht nur die prächtigste, sondern auch die reichste Stadt des Orients. Jeder Zunft, jedem Handwerk wurde ein eigener Bereich zugewiesen. Bedeutende Handelswege zwischen China und Europa verliefen über Isfahan.
Jahrhundertealte Religion des Zoroastrismus

Zu den Stationen zählen das verlassene Wüstendorf Kharanaq, die Ruinen des antiken Persepolis, alte Moscheen und quirlige Basare. Unterwegs gibt es immer wieder Begegnungen mit Menschen. Darunter Männer, die einen Jahrtausende alten Sport betreiben, ein Künstler, der mit Katzenhaar auf Kamelknochen winzige Bilder malt, oder junge Iraner, die von ihrem Alltag in dem islamischen Staat erzählen.

Iran truly was an amazing country. It blew our expectations away and one of the highlights of our trip was visiting Persepolis, the historic Capital of Persia over 2500 years ago. The craftsmanship has to be seen to be believed, and the scale is quite extraordinary. We then explored the city of Shiraz, visiting a local Mosque and a quick visit to the local Bazaar. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens.
Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens.
The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars.
ANCIENT SITES
Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs.
SCENERY
But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. Iran truly was an amazing country. It blew our expectations away and one of the highlights of our trip was visiting Persepolis, the historic Capital of Persia over 2500 years ago. The craftsmanship has to be seen to be believed, and the scale is quite extraordinary. We then explored the city of Shiraz, visiting a local Mosque and a quick visit to the local Bazaar. Such beautiful and friendly people, so grateful to have the chance to visit Iran and experience it first hand.

My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. CITIES The capital Tehran is most people's starting point, and in this busy city you can see ostentatious ornaments from the royal household in the crown jewels museum, and wander around the Shah's old residence, Golestan Palace. Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens. Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens. The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars. ANCIENT SITES Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs. SCENERY But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries.
