The Vietnam People's Army (VPA; Vietnamese: Quân Đội Nhân Dân Việt Nam), also known as the Vietnamese People's Army and the People's Army of Vietnam, is the armed forces of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The VPA includes: Ground Force (including Strategic Rear Forces), Navy, Air Force, Border Defense Force, and Coast Guard. However, Vietnam does not have a specific separate Ground Forces or Army branch. All of the ground troops, army corps, military districts, and specialized arms belong to the Ministry of Defence (Vietnam), directly under command of the Central Military Commission, Minister of Defence, and General Staff (Vietnam People's Army).
The military flag of the Vietnam People's Army is the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam with the words Quyết thắng (Determination to Win) added in yellow at the top left.
During the French Indochina War (1946–1954), the VPA was often referred to as the Việt Minh. In the context of the Vietnam War (1959–1975), the army was referred to as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). This allowed writers, the U.S. military, and the general public, to distinguish northern communists from the southern communists, or Viet Cong. However, both groups ultimately worked under the same command structure. According to Hanoi's official history, the Vietcong was a branch of the VPA. In 2010 the Vietnam People's Army undertook the role of leading the 1,000th Anniversary Parade in Hanoi by performing their biggest parade in Vietnam's history.

North Vietnam is still ruled by communism but in the south the hammer and sickle fades into capitalism that is gradually beginning to dominate all. One country and two lifestyles, Vietnam has opened up its borders. It is a country of beautiful landscapes, amicable people and a great cultural heritage.Hanoi is North Vietnam’s lively capital city located in the north of the country and set amid the delta plains of the Red River. The Chua Mot Cot Pagoda is one of the oldest religious buildings in Hanoi and is a temple built upon a single column in the centre of a small lake. On the shores of the Song Huong

Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, on the southern tip of Vietnam, is one of South East Asia’s emerging boom cities. Still affectionately known by many as Saigon, this is Vietnam’s largest city and its economic engine room.
Ho Chi Minh City has an irrepressible soul and an entrepreneurial energy that hums day and night. Despite almost a century of colonialism and brutal conflict, today this city is renowned for its warm hospitality, which even extends to former foes. A youthful enthusiasm flows through this city, just like the stream of scooters, motorbikes and cars that flow endlessly through its chaotic streets.

Vietnam is an utter assault on the senses; at once dizzying, frenetic and fascinating. Conical-hatted street vendors sell their wares on the pavements outside gleaming high-rises and exquisite temples are surrounded by streets buzzing with thousands of motorbikes.
Wherever you travel you can't fail to be intrigued by this frenetic, fascinating country. The capital Hanoi is the focus for arts in Vietnam and has been since its foundation in the year 1010 while in Ho Chi Minh City busin

Things to do in Vietnam | Top Attractions Travel Guide
During the past decade I've traveled in Southeast Asia more than any other region in the world. If I were to recommend one country to visit my shortlist would certainly include Vietnam. From Hanoi to Saigon - or vice versa - there are few countries that offer as much diversity. The following top attractions travel guide outlines all of the best things to do while traveling in Vietnam:
1) I've honestly never met anyone who has regretted visiting Ha Long Bay. With stunning karst peaks and adventure sports aplenty it's the kind of place where you can relax on a boat for several days and not want to come back to land anytime soon.

Vietnam had its own share of wars, American and French conquerors and economic difficulties. So it is no wonder that the country appears only nowadays on the map of international tourism. More and more people are interested in the heritage of the 2700 years old country and its natural beauties. Beside the two large cities, Hanoi and Ho Shi Minh city, one can find the remnants of the imperial times and the beautiful pagodas in Hue. The ruins of My Son are similar to the ruins of the temples of Angkor. Beside the tribes living here, the mountains around Sapa are well known of the Silver Waterfall and the rice fields. HA NOI, Vietnam Travel Guide, Ha Noi's Old Quarter { Fascinating Destination} 1
There's an old Vietnamese saying, "Hanoi has thirty-six streets and guilds -- Jam Street, Sugar Street, Salt Street...". Inside a modern and dynamic city, there appears an antique quarter, the Hanoi's Old Quarter -- the represented eternal soul of the city. These days, most Vietnamese and Westerners are familiar with the phrase "Hà Nội - Ba mươi sáu phố phường" (translated as "Ha Noi - 36 districts" or "Hanoi -- 36 Old Streets"), or "Phố cổ Hà Nội" (translated as "Hanoi's Old Quarter"), the top special historical vestige and sight-seeing of the capital, luring international visitors thanks to their mostly original state.

Hey guys! Today we're taking you with us to Halong Bay. This is our last stop in Vietnam, before flying back to Bangkok and preparing for the next adventure... India.
This was our first time exploring Halong Bay, I imagine many years ago it was a pristine wonder of the world. The limestone cliffs rising out of the emerald waters are awe-inspiring. Unfortunately the breathtakingly beautiful waterscape has been tainted, with trash... lots of it. Some areas were cleaner than others, the area we kayaked through was especially gorgeous. In this video I'm going to show you places in Vietnam that you wouldn't even believe existed, especially not for the prices that you'll see.
The truth about travel is that the best experiences you'll ever have usually aren't at resorts you see advertised on TV because everybody else is also seeing those advertisements and planning trips there, AND those places charge a premium price.
But once you've traveled around the world you start to realize there are some absolutely unbelievable places that most tourists will NEVER find. In this course, I'm going to show you some of the places that I found in my five years living in Vietnam.

DA LAT, Vietnam today: What To Do, Where to Travel in 1 Day. 2015
There are many things to do in Da Lat. Here are some options for you in just one day. Of course you're going to stop for meals too, but I've omitted. Also note the rain showers and how that can affect your day. The first thing you should do is have breakfast at the Da Lat Market on the second level. A wide variety of noodle and rice dishes with drinks are available for order. Then, visit a strawberry farm to buy some gifts for friends. There's no need to visit any flower or plant stores unless you plan to buy some. There's not much to see. I do recommend visiting the mysterious spinning wooden table. It really does spin on its own when you sa

With its small canals and wide creeks, the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam is as multifaceted and contradictory as the country itself. Covering thirty nine thousand square kilometres it is the third largest delta in the world. My Tho is one of the delta’s most charming cities and an area with a long and colourful history. It was the Chinese who first settled in this area in 1697 and who were responsible for the subsequent historical development of My Tho. Most of the smaller islands in the Mekong Delta contain fertile soil thus over the years the delta has developed into an agricult

Vietnam Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Vietnam.
On the shores of the Song Huong, Giang in the heart of Vietnam is a former royal city and today’s provincial capital of Hué. Nine mighty canon are the symbolic guards of the historic citadel. Beyond its defences are five hundred hectares that contain the Imperial City and also the Forbidden Purple City. Da Nang’s Cham Museum contains a fine collection of Cham sculpture from the surrounding provinces. It boasts more than three hundred exhibits divided into ten rooms, with sandstone deities, monsters and heavenly dancers. With nearly six million inhabitants, Saigon is also known as Ho Chi Minh City. The Jade Pagoda, the Temple of the Jade Emperor, highlights the country’s religious faith. The interior features Daoism in all its splendour and it was here that it all began, at the junction of the Ben Nghe Canal on the slowly flowing Saigon River. Vietnam is a colourful land that still contains ancient tribes and exotic landscapes – a fascinating paradise located on the exotic edge of South East Asia!

Ho Chi Minh City Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
In Ho Chi Minh City, it feels as though the future has arrived… and yet the past is never far away. Wide boulevards built during the French colonial era are lined with cutting edge skyscrapers, while jasmine scented temples gently rub shoulders with chic rooftop bars
More than 9 million people call Ho Chi Minh City home and the dynamic energy of its streets is part of its charm. The city is divided into a series of numbered districts and District One is where almost all of the city’s main attractions can be found.
As the sun goes down, find yourself a seat at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s famous rooftop bars, a perfect way to soak up the buzz of the city.
Dynamic, chaotic and energizing. Ho Chi Minh city may have burst onto the world stage as a battle zone but today, there is no better destination to plug in to the pulse of 21st century Asia.

Vietnam Travel Guide and Tourism 2014 (HD)
Vietnam Tourism, Vietnam Cities, Vietnam Vacation 2014 (HD)
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube
The capital Hanoi is the focus for arts in Vietnam and has been since its foundation in the year 1010 while in Ho Chi Minh City business is king. Hue is steeped in imperial history, Hoi An the place to soak up the atmosphere and the largely undeveloped coastline is the place to kick back.
Life in urban Vietnam is conducted on the streets. In bia hois (pavement pubs) men sup ice-cold beer and odours from makeshift food stalls fill the nostrils: see steaming pho, a noodle soup with various unidentifiable chunks of meat, or grilled chicken feet. Along nearly all the moped-clogged streets produce is sold. Tubs wriggle with live sturgeon, crabs and frogs (still a delicacy from French colonial days), baskets are top heavy with colourful and bizarre fruit, and every possible piece of a pig is on sale.
Rural Vietnam is entirely different. Just a short distance from the cities, water buffalo wallow in green rice paddies and elegant women wearing traditional conical headwear cycle along dusty paths.
Vietnam things to see and do
======================
Beautiful beaches
-----------------------------
The beaches of Vietnam are superb. Nha Trang is the perfect combination of a long sandy beach for relaxing days under the palm trees and a town with restaurants and bars to pass the balmy evenings. Boat trips take you out to nearby islands and divers can explore the nearby coral reefs. Alternatively, try Vung Tau, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City for some superb snorkelling around the many offshore islands or head east of Phan Thiet to the sand dunes of Mui Ne, which stretch for miles. Whatever your budget there'll be a resort to suit you. Relax on the white-sand beaches or have a go at many of the water sports on offer.
Cao Dai Temple
-------------------------
Head out to Tay Ninh to view the colourful midday service of the intriguing Cao Dai sect held in a large temple almost Disney-esque in style. The followers wear red, blue and yellow robes and chant to the accompaniment of a traditional orchestra. En route, scramble through the tunnels at Cu Chi, from where the Viet Cong successfully launched attacks against US forces.
Central Highlands
--------------------------
Dalat is as far as most people go into the Central Highlands but head further into the mountains for stunning views and waterfalls. You are assured of a warm welcome in Buon Ma Thuot, a coffee growing region and home to the Montagnards. The Ho Chi Minh trail is easily reached from Kontum.
Cooking lessons
Learn the subtleties of Vietnamese cookery at a class in ancient Hoi An. Submerge into the hustle and bustle of the market to buy provisions before retreating to the calm of the kitchen. The best part of the day -- you get to eat what you have helped prepare!
Dalat
-----------
To escape the heat of the plains, head for Dalat, a former colonial hill station, reminiscent of a French town, with faded, elegant villas evocative of another era. Colonists from Saigon headed to its cool climes as well as the emperor and his entourage. The romantic lakes and alpine scenery are magnets for Vietnamese honeymooners.
Halong Bay
---------------
Sure it is touristy, and if you take a boat trip you'll be among a flotilla of dozens of old converted junks, but Halong Bay still remains one of the most impressive sights in the world. Take the opportunity to borrow a kayak (all boats should do this) and paddle through the limestone karsts dramatically rising up out of the sea. Or spend the night on one of those junks and explore the caves hidden deep in the islands, pass floating villages and at night enjoy a sundowner on the top deck and look out for shooting stars.
Hanoi
---------
Hanoi is a city of contrasts with the wide, leafy boulevards lined by beautiful colonial buildings in the French quarter, the maze of narrow streets of the Old Quarter and the tranquil lakes. Wherever you are, the background noise is the buzzing of the motorbikes that crowd the streets of the capital.
Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City by train
--------------------------------------------
A trip on the Reunification Express is a must. However, the trains between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are certainly not express. It can take between 30 and 40 hours to travel between the two cities so best to do one section only. Popular is the 18-hour journey between Hanoi and Hue.

2) When based in Hoi An there are a plethora of attractions and landmarks worth visiting. Whether on foot - or on a bike - make sure to check out the Japanese covered bridge, Quang Dong Assembly hall and the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese.
3) I've heard of people who literally fly to Vietnam to have an entire wardrobe made. No place in Vietnam is more famous for its custom made tailors than Hoi An. From dresses to shirts and shoes to purses you can get just about anything made here for less than what you'd likely pay back home.
4) Feasting on Vietnamese local delights should be a top priority for anyone visiting the country and what better way to do it than by visiting a local organic farm. Nestled just outside of Hoi An we visited Tra Que for some amazing Vietnamese cuisine.
5) For those with an adventurous streak having the opportunity to cruise down the Mekong Delta on a boat is an experience you'll never forget. To avoid getting a sunburn be sure to put on a conical hat - it only costs about a dollar!
6) If you've ever wondered what it is like to be in a dynamic and chaotic city look no further than Saigon. With plenty of attractions ranging from shopping to museums, there is never a shortage of things to do in the city.
7) Taking the bus in Vietnam is a bit of a nightmare considering the road conditions, traffic congestion and liberal use of the horns. The alternative? Taking a train. Our of our favorite train trips in Vietnam was traveling from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) to Nha Trang.
8) For the adventure sports junky the opportunity to go sea kayaking in Ha Long Bay is not to be missed. If you take a boat tour around Ha Long Bay for 2 to 3 days it should almost certainly be included on your itinerary.
9) Eating authentic and cheap Vietnamese cuisine is one of the things I miss the most about traveling in Vietnam. If you head over to the Bale Wel in Hoi An you can make yourself special rolls with country pancakes, spring rolls, satay, kimchi and other ingredients.
10) If there is one place in Vietnam I'd recommend more than anywhere else it is hands down Sapa. With breathtaking scenery, rolling hills and rice terraces it is worth exploring either on a one day hike or a several day trekking expedition. In this section we show you our first leg of the journey heading from Sapa to Lao Chai village.
11) If you have the opportunity be sure to listen to a live performance of traditional Vietnamese music.
12) The floating markets in the Mekong Delta region are fascinating. Bustling with activity you'll have a chance to purchase iced coffee and other refreshments.
13) Checking out the Central market in Hoi An allows you to experience what a local market is like versus one aimed towards a tourist.
14) Having the chance to learn how to cook and prepare Vietnamese cuisine is inexpensive and fun. There are plenty of cooking schools to choose from but we decided to go with Green Moss.
15) I've already waxed on and marveled about Sapa but it is worth mentioning again that if you have the opportunity to linger be sure to get a hotel room with a view.
16) Finally, we prefer the trains but taking a night bus - at least once - in Vietnam is certainly an experience you'll never forget. With all of the swerving and honking don't expect to get much sleep.
This is part of our Travel in Vietnam series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese arts, Vietnamese foods, Vietnamese religion and Vietnamese people.

Vietnam Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
The most well known sight of the country is the wild Bay of the Descending Dragon. The exotic Mekong delta is famous of the water city of My Tho, the canals, and the swimming market.

Vietnam Tourism, Vietnam Cities, Vietnam Vacation 2014 (HD)
Vietnam is an utter assault on the senses; at once dizzying, frenetic and fascinating. Conical-hatted street vendors sell their wares on the pavements outside gleaming high-rises and exquisite temples are surrounded by streets buzzing with thousands of motorbikes.
Wherever you travel you can't fail to be intrigued by this frenetic, fascinating country.

How old are the streets? It would be a big surprise should you know that Hanoi's Old Quarter came into being at the time King Ly Thai To selected Thang Long as the country's capital in 1010, that is, the streets have a nearly 1,000-year old history and became crowded & lively in 15th century. What makes them unique is that many of them remain in their very ancient architecture of the 15th century. Up to now, it has been the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam.
What are their names' origins? Due to their long-lasting age, they are called "Old Quarter" or "36 Old Streets" (as consisting of 36 member streets). Similarly to the Guilded age of Europe, "Ha Noi's 36 districts" is Vietnam's version of the guild concept. In the past, as artisans moved to the capital city to do business, they gathered together in this area to share the resources. As a result, many of the streets were named after the crafts sold at that individual street. Pho Hang Bun (Vermicelli), Pho Hang Ma (Paper Product), Pho Hang Bac (Silver), etc. are examples of the streets carrying the name of the products sold there.
The phrase "36 pho phuong" often causes much confusion for most people; "Phố" means a street or a place for merchants to gather to do business, while "Phường", a district or a guild of artisans specializing in a particular trade (phuong cheo, phuong tho, etc.). Yet, in any case, both are right to some extent.
Specialized craft streets and guilds: Most tourists are eager for exploring the old streets well-known for each one's specialized A corner of Hang Gai Street
A corner of Hang Gai Street
industry. Hang Gai Street offers silk clothing ready-made and tailored, embroidery, and silver products. Hang Quat, the street that formerly sold silk and feather fans, now stuns the visitor by its brilliantly colored funeral and festival flags and religious objects and clothing. To Tich Street connects the above two and is still the wood turner's street. Hang Ma glimmers with shiny paper products, such as gift wrappings, wedding decorations and miniature paper objects to burn for the dead. Lan Ong Street is a sensual delight of textures and smells emanating from the sacks of herbal medicinal products: leaves, roots, barks, and powders, etc. Coming here, you may feel as if you were in a classical-styled area in terms of both architecture and product types!
36 old streets or more? Although the old section of Hanoi is often called the "36 Old Streets," there are more than 36 actual streets. Some researchers believe that the number 36 came from the 15th century when there might have been 36 guild locations, which were workshop areas, not streets. When streets were later developed, the guild names were applied to the streets. Others attribute the 36 to a more abstract concept. The number nine in Asia represents the concept of "plenty." Nine times the four directions makes 36, which simply means "many". In fact, there are now more than 70 streets in the area.
Although many of the streets no longer sell the products after which they were named, some still do. Today, the Old Quarter has become the unique classical feature of Hanoi, and the inspiration of numerous writers, poets, and painters, and one of the desired tourist destinations in Hanoi.
To fully explore the Old Quarter in Hanoi, prepare your feet for a day of walking street to street and taking in the locals' daily life, the old-style narrow streets and houses, the colorful souvenir shops, and of course trying some of the most tasty traditional foods of Hanoians. Many agree that joining a Hanoi walking tour or food tour offered by travel agencies will give foreign visitors a full experience of Hanoi Old Quarter, including the daily lifestyle, the history lesson and the feast for their tummies. Those who would like to walk around the area might want to check out this Hanoi Old Quarter walking tour, while those who look to explore the tasty traditional food in the area are recommended to take a look at this.

Traveling Vietnam: Hanoi to Halong Bay
Traveling Vietnam: Hanoi to Halong Bay.
Ti Top island had a nice viewpoint, however, the beach itself was over crowded, and while there were many people swimming there, we opted to skip the swimming. One of highlights of the trip was exploring the cave.
While it was worth experiencing Halong Bay, it was our first and last time. Thanks for coming on the adventure with us!
xoxo,
Christine

But once you've traveled around the world you start to realize there are some absolutely unbelievable places that most tourists will NEVER find. In this course, I'm going to show you some of the places that I found in my five years living in Vietnam.
I'll show you the best beaches (some of them totally secret to this day), the best restaurants and night clubs in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), and many more destinations that other tourists and backpackers will never find in a guidebook or other travel literature.
A desire about Vietnam
An interest in Vietnamese culture
An adventurous spirit
the best places to travel in Vietnam
places to avoid in Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam
about the best restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City
about secret beaches in Vietnam that nobody knows about
secrets to saving money in Vietnam
People planning a trip to Vietnam
People planning to move to Vietnam to live
People planning a trip through Southeast Asia planning to stop in HCMC

It really does spin on its own when you say or think a direction. The crazy house is worth exploring for a few hours, unfortunately it was raining so hard and we didn't want to get the camera wet. The train station is a few minutes away and worth checking out if you like train stations. And lastly check out the Truc Lam Pagoda and ride the cable car. There's also a big lake nearby that might be worth checking out, unfortunately the rain made us lazy and so we just went back to the hotel and relaxed.

Mekong Delta Vietnam Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Mekong Delta Vietnam in Vietnam.
Most of the smaller islands in the Mekong Delta contain fertile soil thus over the years the delta has developed into an agricultural area Today around twenty two million people live in Nam Bo of which the huge Mekong Delta is at the very heart. In the wider sections of the Mekong, that is also known as The Nine-Headed Dragon Of Cuu Long, ferries operate from bank to bank. Large ferries cross the Song Hau Giang, the most southern creek of the Mekong whose source is in Tibet, some four thousand kilometres distant. Situated at the central junction of seven canals is the floating market of Phung Hiep, an intriguing experience. The colourful antics of the various market traders is particularly Fascinating and it is not surprising that this market is one of the most photographed locations in South Vietnam. In search of hungry customers, tiny floating restaurants make their way between the various busy market traders. The Mekong Delta – colourful, exotic, fascinating – and always a surprise!

Son Doong Cave Vietnam- A Wonderful Cave || Travel Guide Documentary
Son Doong Cave- The World's Biggest Cave || Travel Guide Documentary
Son Doong Cave is in the heart of the Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in the Quang Binh province of Central Vietnam. Only recently explored in 2009-2010 by the British Cave Research Association, the cave has only been open to the public since 2013.
Less people have seen the inside of Hang Son Doong than have stood on the summit of Mount Everest. Join us on this otherworldly expedition and become one of the lucky few who have had the life changing experience of exploring the world’s largest cave.
Imagine trekking straight into the depths of the world’s largest cave on an expedition unlike any other. A cave so massive that a 747 could fly through its largest cavern. A space so mesmerising that it forces you to question whether you are still on this planet at all. Foreign landscapes found nowhere else, enormous stalagmites rising from the ground and statuesque stalactites hanging from the ceiling like an alien species. Jungles emerge from inside the cave itself, a scene so surreal that you have to see it to believe it. Misty clouds envelop the whole scene, a result of the cave’s own localised weather system. Passages adorned with ancient fossils offer evidence of the millions of years that have passed on this Earth.
As you approach the jungle just outside the entrance, the rush of cool wind that cascades out brings to life everything inside of you. Hazy, cold and exhilarating, it is apparent that there’s something magical waiting just beyond the opening to the cave.

'This film examines how the Vietnam War differed from previous wars in which the United States engaged. Scenes explore how a conflict with no conventional battle line (a guerrilla war) had its unique difficulties, and how our mission in Vietnam was to win "the hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people.'

The Vietnam War (Vietnamese: Chiến tranh Việt Nam), also known as the Second Indochina War, and also known in Vietnam as Resistance War Against America (Vietnamese: Kháng chiến chống Mỹ) or simply the American War, was a Cold War-era proxy war that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War (1946–54) and was fought between North Vietnam—supported by the Soviet Union, China and other communist allies—and the government of South Vietnam—supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies. The Viet Cong (also known as the National Liberation Front, or NLF), a South Vietnamese communist common front aided by the North, fought a guerrilla war against anti-communist forces in the region. The People's Army of Vietnam (also known as the North Vietnamese Army) engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large units to battle.
As the war continued, the part of the Viet Cong in the fighting decreased as the role of the NVA grew. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery, and airstrikes. In the course of the war, the U.S. conducted a large-scale strategic bombing campaign against North Vietnam, and over time the North Vietnamese airspace became the most heavily defended in the world.
The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a Communist takeover of South Vietnam. This was part of a wider containment policy, with the stated aim of stopping the spread of communism. The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule. They viewed the conflict as a colonial war, fought initially against forces from France and then America, and later against South Vietnam.
Beginning in 1950, American military advisors arrived in what was then French Indochina. U.S. involvement escalated in the early 1960s, with troop levels tripling in 1961 and again in 1962. U.S. involvement escalated further following the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, in which a U.S. destroyer clashed with North Vietnamese fast attack craft, which was followed by the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which gave the U.S. president authorization to increase U.S. military presence. Regular U.S. combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Operations crossed international borders: bordering areas of Laos and Cambodia were heavily bombed by U.S. forces as American involvement in the war peaked in 1968, the same year that the communist side launched the Tet Offensive. The Tet Offensive failed in its goal of overthrowing the South Vietnamese government but became the turning point in the war...
Gradual withdrawal of U.S. ground forces began as part of as "Vietnamization", which aimed to end American involvement in the war while transferring the task of fighting the Communists to the South Vietnamese themselves...
Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973. The capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese Army in April 1975 marked the end of the war, and North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of fatalities (see Vietnam War casualties). Estimates of the number of Vietnamese service members and civilians killed vary from 800,000 to 3.1 million. Some 200,000–300,000 Cambodians, 20,000–200,000 Laotians, and 58,220 U.S. service members also died in the conflict...

The tunnel rats were American soldiers who performed underground search and destroy missions during the Vietnam War. This US Army Training film shows how tunnel rats destroy enemy earthen tunnels employing CS gas, grenades, conventional military explosives, special Purpose charges, and the XM242 liquid explosive demolition kit.

About the tunnel Rats:
During the Vietnam War "tunnel rat" became a more or less official specialty for volunteer infantrymen, primarily from the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Their motto was the Latin phrase "Non Gratum Anus Rodentum" – "not worth a rat's ass". Since the 1940s, during the war against the French colonial forces, the Viet Cong had created an extensive underground system of complexes. By the 1960s, there were underground hospitals, training grounds, storage facilities, headquarters and more. The Viet Cong, who were crack forces highly skilled at guerrilla warfare, might stay underground for several months at a time. The tunnels were their territory.
Whenever troops would uncover a tunnel, tunnel rats were sent in to kill any hiding enemy soldiers and to plant explosives to destroy the tunnels. Tunnel rats were generally, but not exclusively, men of smaller stature (5'6" and under) in order to fit in the narrow tunnels. A tunnel rat was equipped with only a standard issue .45 caliber pistol, a bayonet and a flashlight, although most tunnel rats were allowed to choose another pistol with which to arm themselves. The tunnels were very dangerous, with numerous booby traps and enemies lying in wait. Underground, gas could be a very deadly weapon, and a tunnel rat might choose to go into the tunnels wearing a gas mask as it would be impossible to put one on in a narrow tunnel. More often than not, however, a tunnel rat would take his chances without a gas mask, as it made even harder to see, hear and breathe in the narrow, dark tunnels.
Such tactics came to prominence following their successful application in January 1966 during a combined US – Australian action against the Cu Chi tunnels in Binh Duong Province, known as Operation Crimp.

Vietnam War Helicopter Door Gunners - The Shotgun Riders | US Army Documentary film
About the helicopter door gunners in the Vietnam War:
A helicopter door gunner is a crewman tasked with firing and maintaining manually directed armament aboard a helicopter. The actual role will vary depending on the task given on a particular mission.
The concept of the door gunner originated during the Vietnam War, when helicopters were first used in combat in large numbers. The personnel who served as early door gunners aboard CH-21, UH-34, and UH-1 helicopters in Vietnam, were enlisted men, serving as both the aircraft's maintenance manager and a door gunner. Normally, a second enlisted soldier served as a second door gunner (such as on a UH-1, and UH-34 helicopters, which both used two gunners – one on each side of the aircraft). Later, the helicopter door gunner position sometimes used a non-aviation trained soldier or marine, that volunteered for door gunner duties.
The principal weapon of the helicopter door gunner was a medium machine gun (MG), initially, the M-1919A4 .30 caliber MG, and soon thereafter, the M-60 7.62mm MG became the standard helicopter door armament system. Initially however not all helicopters were armed with a machine gun for door armament. The helicopter door gunners sometimes used an M1 Carbine, an M14 rifle, or an M16 rifle, as their only weapon.
The door gunner position was not a popular one in the Vietnam War, due to the exposed position of manning a machine gun in the open door of a helicopter. According to popular legend, the helicopter door gunner on a Vietnam era UH-1 Huey gunship had a life-span of 5 minutes. This was exaggerated but displays the hazards of this military job at the time. The UH-1 helicopter (still in use by the U.S. Marine Corps, as the UH-1Y helicopter) is still manned as it was in the Vietnam War, with the gunner firing from the open cabin door.

Vietnam War: Why America Lost - Amazing Documentary Film
The Vietnam War, additionally known as the 2nd Indochina Battle, as well as known in Vietnam as Resistance Battle Against America just the American Battle, was a Cold War-era proxy war that happened in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 Nov 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This battle adhered to the First Indochina Battle (1946-- 54) and was combated between North Vietnam-- supported by the Soviet Union, China and various other communist allies-- and also the government of South Vietnam-- sustained by the Usa and various other anti-communist allies. The Viet Cong (likewise called the National Liberation Front, or NLF), a South Vietnamese communist typical front helped by the North, combated a guerrilla war versus anti-communist forces in the region. The People's Army of Vietnam (also called the North Vietnamese Military) engaged in a more standard war, sometimes committing big systems to fight.

Who Won in Vietnam? The Career of Vo Nguyen Giap - Military Leader, Guerrilla Warfare (199
Who Won in Vietnam? The Career of Vo Nguyen Giap - Military Leader, Guerrilla Warfare (1993) Võ Nguyên Giáp (25 August 1911 -- 4 October 2013) was a General in the Vietnam People's Army and a politician. He first grew to prominence during World War II, where he served as the military leader of the Viet Minh resistance against the Japanese occupation of Vietnam. Giáp was a principal commander in two wars: the First Indochina War (1946--1954) and the Vietnam War (1960--1975). He participated in the following historically significant battles: Lạng Sơn (1950), Hòa Bình (1951--1952), Điện Biên Phủ (1954), the Tết Offensive (1968), the Easter Offensive (1972), and the final Hồ Chí Minh Campaign (1975). Giáp was also a journalist, an interior minister in President Hồ Chí Minh's Việt Minh government, the military commander of the Việt Minh, the commander of the Vietnam People's Army (PAVN), and defense minister. He also served as a member of the Politburo of the Vietnam Workers' Party, which in 1976 became the Communist Party of Vietnam. He was the most prominent military commander, beside Ho Chi Minh, during the Vietnam War, and was responsible for major operations and leadership until the war ended. Giáp remained commander in chief of the People's Army of Vietnam throughout the war against the United States. During the conflict, he oversaw the expansion of the PAVN from a small self-defense force into a large conventional army, equipped by its communist allies with considerable amounts of relatively sophisticated weaponry, although this did not in general match the weaponry of the Americans. Giáp has often been assumed to have been the planner of the Tết Offensive of 1968, but this appears not to have been the case. The best evidence indicates that he disliked the plan, and when it became apparent that Lê Duẩn and Văn Tiến Dũng were going to push it through despite his doubts, he left Vietnam for medical treatment in Hungary, and did not return until after the offensive had begun. Although this attempt to spark a general uprising against the southern government failed militarily, it turned into a significant political victory by convincing the American politicians and public that their commitment to South Vietnam could no longer be open-ended. Giáp later argued that the Tết Offensive was not a purely military strategy but rather part of a general strategy, an integrated one, at once military, political and diplomatic. Peace talks between representatives from the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the NLF began in Paris in January 1969. President Richard Nixon, like President Lyndon B. Johnson before him, was convinced that a U.S. withdrawal was necessary, but five years would pass before the last American troops left South Vietnam. In October 1972, the negotiators came close to agreeing to a formula to end the conflict. The plan was that the last U.S. troops would withdraw from Vietnam in exchange for a cease-fire and the return of American prisoners held by Hà Nội. It was also agreed that the governments in North and South Vietnam would remain in power until new elections could be arranged to unite the whole country. Although the casualty rate in the Nguyễn Huệ Offensive during the spring of 1972 was high, PAVN was able to gain a foothold in territorial Southern Vietnam from which to launch future offensives. Although U.S. troops would leave the country, PAVN troops could remain in their positions in the south. In an effort to put pressure on both North and South Vietnam during the negotiations, President Nixon ordered a new series of air raids on Hà Nội and Hải Phòng, codenamed Operation Linebacker II. The operation ended in success in 27 January 1973, after 12 days with heavy casualty and destruction of both sides. Both U.S and North Vietnam agreed to sign the Paris Peace Accords that had been proposed in October. This time, the advantage was in the hand of Hanoi. The last U.S. combat troops left in March 1973. Despite the treaty, there was no let-up in fighting. South Vietnamese massive advances against the Viet Cong controlled territory inspired their opponents to change their strategy. In March, communist leaders met in Hanoi for a series of meetings to hammer out plans for a massive offensive against the South. In June 1973, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment to prohibit further U.S. military involvement, so the PAVN supply routes were able to operate normally without fear of U.S. bombing.

The 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles")—is a modular light infantry division of the United States Army trained for air assault operations. During World War II, it was renowned for its role in Operation Overlord (the D-Day landings and airborne landings on June 6 1944, in Normandy, France), Operation Market Garden, the liberation of the Netherlands and, perhaps most famously, its action during the Battle of the Bulge around the city of Bastogne, Belgium. During the Vietnam War, the 101st Airborne Division fought in several major campaigns and battles including the fight for Hamburger Hill in May 1969.
In mid-1968 it was reorganized and redesignated as an airmobile division, then in 1974 as an air assault division. These titles reflect the division's shift from airplanes as the primary method of delivering troops into combat, to the use of helicopters. Many current members of the 101st are graduates of the U.S. Army Air Assault School. Division headquarters is at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In recent years, the division has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The division is one of the most highly decorated units in the United States Army and has been featured prominently in military fiction...
Vietnam War
In mid-1965, the 1st Brigade and support troops were deployed to the Republic of Vietnam, followed by the rest of the division in late 1967. The 101st was deployed in the northern I Corps region operating against the Vietnam People's Army (NVA) infiltration routes through Laos and the A Shau Valley for most of the war. In almost seven years of combat in Vietnam, elements of the 101st participated in 15 campaigns. Notable among these were the Battle of Hamburger Hill in 1969 and Firebase Ripcord in 1970.
Within the United States, the 101st, along with the 82nd Airborne Division, was sent in to quell the large and violent 1967 Detroit riot.
Firebase Ripcord
On 12 March 1970, the 3rd Brigade of 101st began rebuilding abandoned Fire Support Base Ripcord which relied, as with most remote bases at the time, on a helicopter lifeline to get supplies in and the personnel out. The firebase was to be used for a planned offensive by the 101st to destroy NVA supply bases in the mountains overlooking the A Shau Valley. Located on the eastern edge of the valley, and taking place at the same time as the Cambodian Incursion, the operation was considered covert.
As the 101st Airborne planned the attack on the NVA supply bases, the North Vietnamese Army was secretly observing their activities. From 12 March until 30 June, the NVA was sporadically attacking the Firebase. After weeks of reconnaissance by the NVA, on the morning of 1 July 1970 the North Vietnamese Army launched a surprise mortar attack on the firebase. The resulting 23-day battle between the 101st Airborne and the North Vietnamese Army was the last major confrontation between United States ground forces and North Vietnam of the Vietnam War.
During the 23-day siege, 75 U.S. servicemen were killed in action, including 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry commanding officer Colonel Andre Lucas, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, and 1st Lt. Bob Kalsu, one of the few American professional athletes to be killed during the war. During the entire battle (including the siege), 250 members of the division were killed.
Fighting from four hilltops, surrounded, and outnumbered nearly ten to one, the division's forces were defeated but managed to inflict heavy losses on the enemy before an aerial withdrawal was ordered on 23 July 1970 while under heavy mortar, anti-aircraft, and small arms fire, ending the siege. After the division withdrew from the firebase, USAF B-52 heavy bombers were sent in to carpet bomb the area...

Battle of Ia Drang (documentary)- Operation Silver Bayonet
In 1965, General William Westmoreland, commander of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, began utilizing American troops for combat operations in Vietnam rather than solely relying on the forces of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. With National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces operating in the Central Highlands northeast of Saigon, Westmoreland elected to debut the new air mobile 1st Cavalry Division as he believed its helicopters would allow it to overcome the region's rugged terrain.
Following a failed North Vietnamese attack on the Special Forces camp at Plei Me in October, the commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Colonel Thomas Brown, was instructed to move from Pleiku to seek and destroy the enemy. Arriving in the area, the 3rd Brigade was unable to find the attackers. Encouraged by Westmoreland to press towards the Cambodian border, Brown soon learned of an enemy concentration near Chu Pong Mountain. Acting on this intelligence, he directed the 1st Battalion/7th Cavalry, led by Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, to conduct a reconnaissance in force in the area of Chu Pong.
wn.com/Battle Of Ia Drang (Documentary) Operation Silver Bayonet

The Vietnam War (Vietnamese: Chiến tranh Việt Nam), also known as the Second Indochina War and also known in Vietnam as Resistance War Against America (Vietnamese: Kháng chiến chống Mỹ) or simply the American War, was a Cold War-era proxy war that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was the decisive engagement in the first Indochina War (1946–54). After French forces occupied the Dien Bien Phu valley in late 1953, Viet Minh commander Vo Nguyen Giap amassed troops and placed heavy artillery in caves of the mountains overlooking the French camp. Boosted by Chinese aid, Giap mounted assaults on the opposition’s strong points beginning in March 1954, eliminating use of the French airfield. Viet Minh forces overran the base in early May, prompting the French government to seek an end to the fighting with the signing of the Geneva Accords of 1954.Vietnam war documentary
The battle that settled the fate of French Indochina was initiated in November 1953, when Viet Minh forces at Chinese insistence moved to attack Lai Chau, the capital of the T’ai Federation (in Upper Tonkin), which was loyal to the French. As Peking had hoped, the French commander in chief in Indochina, General Henri Navarre, came out to defend his allies because he believed the T’ai “maquis” formed a significant threat in the Viet Minh “rear” (the T’ai supplied the French with opium that was sold to finance French special operations) and wanted to prevent a Viet Minh sweep into Laos. Because he considered Lai Chau impossible to defend, on November 20, Navarre launched Operation Castor with a paratroop drop on the broad valley of Dien Bien Phu, which was rapidly transformed into a defensive perimeter of eight strong points organized around an airstrip. When, in December 1953, the T’ais attempted to march out of Lai Chau for Dien Bien Phu, they were badly mauled by Viet Minh forces.war of vietnam
Viet Minh commander Vo Nguyen Giap, with considerable Chinese aide, massed troops and placed heavy artillery in caves in the mountains overlooking the French camp. On March 13, 1954, Giap launched a massive assault on strong point Beatrice, which fell in a matter of hours. Strong points Gabrielle and Anne-Marie were overrun during the next two days, which denied the French use of the airfield, the key to the French defense. Reduced to airdrops for supplies and reinforcement, unable to evacuate their wounded, under constant artillery bombardment, and at the extreme limit of air range, the French camp’s morale began to fray. As the monsoons transformed the camp from a dust bowl into a morass of mud, an increasing number of soldiers–almost four thousand by the end of the siege in May–deserted to caves along the Nam Yum River, which traversed the camp; they emerged only to seize supplies dropped for the defenders. war of vietnam
Despite these early successes, Giap’s offensives sputtered out before the tenacious resistance of French paratroops and legionnaires. On April 6, horrific losses and low morale among the attackers caused Giap to suspend his offensives. Some of his commanders, fearing U.S. air intervention, began to speak of withdrawal. Again, the Chinese, in search of a spectacular victory to carry to the Geneva talks scheduled for the summer, intervened to stiffen Viet Minh resolve: reinforcements were brought in, as were Katyusha multitube rocket launchers, while Chinese military engineers retrained the Viet Minh in siege tactics. When Giap resumed his attacks, human wave assaults were abandoned in favor of siege techniques that pushed forward webs of trenches to isolate French strong points.war of vietnam

The Degar, also known as the Montagnard, are the indigenous peoples of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The term Montagnard means "mountain people" in French and is a carryover from the French colonial period in Vietnam. In Vietnamese, they are known by the term người Thượng (Highlanders) — this term now can also be applied to other minority ethnic groups in Vietnam or Người dân tộc thiếu số (literally, "minority people"). Earlier they were referred to pejoratively as the mọi...
Before the Vietnam War, the population of the Central Highlands, estimated at between three and three-and-a-half million, was almost exclusively Degar. Today, the population is approximately four million, of whom about one million are Degars. The 30 or so Degar tribes in the Central Highlands comprise more than six different ethnic groups who speak languages drawn primarily from the Malayo-Polynesian, Tai, and Mon--Khmer language families. The main tribes, in order of population, are the Jarai, Rhade, Bahnar, Koho, Mnong, and Stieng.
Originally inhabitants of the coastal areas of the region, they were driven to the uninhabited mountainous areas by invading Vietnamese and Cambodians beginning prior to the 9th century...
As the Vietnam War began to loom on the horizon, both South Vietnamese and American policy makers sought to begin training troops from minority groups in the Vietnamese populace. The U.S. Mission to Saigon sponsored the training of the Degar in unconventional warfare by American Special Forces. These newly trained Degar were seen as a potential ally in the Central Highlands area to stop Viet Cong activity in the region and a means of preventing further spread of Viet Cong sympathy. Later, their participation would become much more important as the Ho Chi Minh trail, the North Vietnamese supply line for Viet Cong forces in the south, grew. The U.S. military, particularly the U.S. Army's Special Forces, developed base camps in the area and recruited the Degar, roughly 40,000 of whom fought alongside American soldiers and became a major part of the U.S. military effort in the Highlands. In 1967, the Viet Cong slaughtered 252 Degar in the village of Dak Son, home to 2000 Highlanders, known as the Dak Son Massacre, in revenge for the Degar's support and allegiance with the Republic of Vietnam.
Thousands of Degar fled to Cambodia after the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese Army, fearing that the new government would launch reprisals against them because they had aided the U.S. Army. The U.S. military resettled some Degar in the United States, primarily in North Carolina, but these evacuees numbered less than two thousand. In addition, the Vietnamese government has steadily displaced thousands of villagers from Vietnam's central highlands, to use the fertile land for coffee plantations.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team ("Sky Soldiers") is an airborne infantry brigade combat team of the United States Army. Activated in 1915, as the 173rd Infantry Brigade, the unit saw service in World War I, but is best known for its actions during the Vietnam War.
The lead element of the 173rd Airborne Brigade ("Sky Soldiers"), stationed in Okinawa, was departed for South Vietnam on 1965. It was the first U.S. Army ground combat unit committed to the war. Combat elements of the 173rd Airborne Brigade included the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Battalions, 503rd Infantry; the 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Artillery; Company D, 16th Armor; Troop E, 17th Cavalry; and the 335th Aviation company.
Headquartered at Bien Hoa Air Base near Saigon, the Brigade conducted operations to keep communist forces away from the Saigon-Bien Hoa complex. In February 1967, the Brigade conducted a combat parachute jump into a major communist base area to the north of Saigon near the Cambodian border. In November 1967, the Brigade was ordered to the Central Highlands, where they fought a major battle at Dak To against an entrenched North Vietnamese Army regiment on Hill 875. In some of the most brutal fighting of the war, the paratroopers captured the hill on Thanksgiving Day, winning the Presidential Unit Citation for bravery in action.
After more than six years on the battlefield, the Brigade was withdrawn from Vietnam in August 1971. During combat service, they suffered 1,606 killed in action and 8,435 wounded in action. Twelve paratroopers of the 173rd won the Medal of Honor for conspicuous bravery in battle.

About the Vietnam War:
The Vietnam War (aka the Second Indochina War) was a Cold War-era military conflict that occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam - supported by the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China - and the government of South Vietnam - supported by the United States and other anti-communist countries. The communist Viet Cong, a South Vietnamese political organization and army aided by North Vietnam, fought a guerrilla war against the United States and the South Vietnamese forces. The Vietnam People's Army (North Vietnamese Army) engaged in a more conventional war, at times committing large units into battle. The U.S. and South Vietnamese forces relied on air superiority and overwhelming firepower to conduct search and destroy operations, involving ground forces, artillery, and airstrikes. The U.S. conducted a large-scale strategic bombing campaign against North Vietnam.
The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam under communist rule. The U.S. government viewed American involvement in the Vietnam War as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam with the aim of stopping the spread of communism.
American military advisors arrived in South Vietnam in 1950. U.S. combat units were deployed in 1965. Operations crossed international borders: Laos and Cambodia were heavily bombed by the U.S forces as American involvement in the war peaked in 1968, at the time of the communist Tet Offensive. After it the U.S. ground forces were gradually withdrawn as part of the Vietnamization policy, which aimed to end American involvement in the Vietnam War while transferring the task of fighting the Communists to the South Vietnamese themselves. In the United States a large anti-Vietnam War movement developed during the 1960s. Despite the Paris Peace, signed in 1973, fighting continued between North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
Direct U.S. military involvement ended on 15 August 1973 as a result of the Case-Church Amendment passed by the U.S. Congress. The capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese Army in April 1975 marked the end of the war. North and South Vietnam were reunified.
