Dead chickens being carted away in bags STORYLINE: Vietnam on Friday confirmed bird flu outbreaks among poultry in three northern villages, despite increased efforts to fight the disease, officials said. More than 3,000 poultry died or were culled this week in three villages in the province and the provincial government has banned the transport of poultry to or from the three affected villages, which have been disinfected, according to the statement. Further measures included disinfecting bordering villages and vaccination of their poultry to prevent the virus from spreading further, officials said. A sign which says "bird flu infected area" was erected on a barrier in Van Trung village in the province. On Friday, about a dozen local officials and animal health workers with canes and sticks in their hands went from house to house in the village beating to death any poultry in sight. Local animal health officials confirmed they have been ordered to cull all the birds in the village's two communes and farmers in the area complied with the orders. "I feel bad for my chickens" farmer Le Thi Hong said as officials came to her house and took away a hen and eight chicks, "It is to prevent the disease spread to human," she added. Local police are also involved in the culling operations with one saying that it was a task that needs to be done "urgently and completely". Health officials said they are expecting more outbreaks in other provinces as cooler weather made it easier for the virus to spread. November to March is when Vietnam has reported most of its bird flu cases and deaths. Bird flu has ravaged poultry farms in Asia since 2003, killing or forcing the cull of more than 100 million birds. It also jumped to humans, killing at least 62 in the region, the bulk of them in Vietnam.
