Macedonia is a young Balkan republic that is a combination of both Orient and Occident. Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the Vardar River Valley. It has a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years and forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unite both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia and in the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in the city. Ottoman rule began in 1392 and lasted for more than five hundred years. Near the village of Glumovo is the Bogorodica Monastery that was founded in the fourteenth century and is active again today. The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

A large fertile plain of about 2,000 square kilometers makes up the Tikveš district (part of Povardarie region), located in central Macedonia and enclosed by mountain highlands on three sides. It consists of gentle undulating hills at an average of 300 meters above sea-level. Its climate is characterized by long, hot summers and mild and rainy sub-mediterranean winters with an average of 460 mm of rainfall each year. Spring is shorter, some say fresher here and autumn is a bit longer and warmer.
Its altitude varies between 110 and 650 meters. The Vardar River, the country’s principal river, cuts the valley into western and eastern sections. These two sections are very different in their relief, climate, surface waters, soil quality and flora and fauna. The valley’s eastern section is arid and sparsely populated, while the western section is fertile and, compared to that of the east, much more densely populated. This area is also rich in forests, minerals and pastureland and resembles an oasis with a virtual Valhalla of vineyards and orchards.
District's wine growing characteristics
average sum of active temperatures during vegetation 42.84°C
absolute maximum temperature 44.8°C
absolute minimum temperature -23.2°C
average air temperature during the vegetation period 19.3°C
average late spring frosts occur to 23.03, early autumn frosts from 04.11
average rainfall per year 483 mm
average rainfall in the period of vegetation 262 mm
sum of sunny hours during vegetation 1750.8
Varieties
As a result of a harmonious climatic and geographic convergence, the Tikveš region is a perfect place for the cultivation of wine (which is locally popular). The region has produced wine for over 2,500 years.
Today, there are predominantly 20 different grape varieties grown in the Tikveš region. The local Smederevka, Vranec and Temjanika comprise 80% of the total grape production. As wine consumers' preferences change globally, the region keep paces with current trends and adjusts its vine varieties accordingly.

Macedonia, is a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991.
It became a member of the United Nations in 1993 but, as a result of a dispute with Greece over its name, it was admitted under the provisional reference of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, sometimes abbreviated as FYROM.
A landlocked country, the Republic of Macedonia is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south and Albania to the west.
It constitutes approximately the northwestern half of the larger geographical region of Macedonia, which also comprises parts of Greece and Bulgaria. The country's capital is Skopje, with 506,926 inhabitants according to the 2002 census. Other cities include Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, Tetovo, Ohrid, Veles, Štip, Kočani, Gostivar, Kavadarci and Strumica. It has more than 50 lakes and sixteen mountains higher than 2,000 m (6,562 ft). Macedonia is a member of the UN and the Council of Europe. Since December 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

Greece is a country in Southern Europe, on the southernmost tip of the Balkan peninsula, with extensive coastlines and islands in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. It shares borders in the north with Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Bulgaria, and Turkey. It has an ancient culture that has had a significant influence on the arts, language, philosophy, politics, and sports of western society, including the genres of comedy and drama, western alphabets, Platonic ideals and the Socratic method, democracies and republics, and the Olympics. Furthermore it's a geographically appealing place to visit, with a mountainous mainland and idyllic island beaches.

Few countries can pride themselves on a heritage as important to Western civilization as Greece. A range of first class historic landmarks remind one of the days when the great Greek emperors and writers made their mark on the development of science, literature and democracy. No less than 17 of those monuments are listed as World Heritage Sites. However, the many charming little islands, sandy beaches and picturesque whitewashed coastal towns are at least as much a reason to come for the millions of tourists that this Mediterranean country receives each year.
Islands in Greece
==================
When it comes to Greece's famously gorgeous islands, it's hard to take your pick out of the 6000 options you have, 227 of them being inhabited. Their rocky coast lines, sandy beaches, charming villages, sheltered bays and many yacht harbours make them extremely popular among all kinds of travellers. The large island of Crete is a highly popular tourist destination, with landscapes varying from great sandy palm beaches to snow-covered high peaks and stunning river gorges and a good deal of night life in its main tourist towns. If you're looking to party at night, lovely Mykonos or Ios are good options too. The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most romantic picks and offers some spectacular views. Its whitewashed capital of Fira is dramatically situated on the edge of a 400m high cliff, overlooking a beautiful blue lagoon. Other popular ones are Lesbos, Paros, Lefkada and Kos. The National Marine Park on Zakynthos is the primary nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. The rugged, green hills and valleys of Kefalonia boast a number of vineyards, and the island's cliffs and beautiful beaches make it a tourist hotspot. For a slightly more authentic and less touristy experience, try Syros, Amorgos or any of the other small and less developed islands.

Robin Lane Fox on Macedonia - Professor Robin Lane Fox, University of Oxford, states the historical truth and stands against FYROM's (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) propaganda."I think there is a message that is historical but still politically has to be said: Macedon is a Greek-Speaking kingdom in Northern Greece, populated by people using Greek names, Greek months and worshipping Greek Gods. Those who live in Skopje [FYROM's capital], and say that is Macedon and Alexander’s homeland, are as ignorant and outrageous as if someone was to say that Oxford University was really in Belarus and Oxford was Minsk!"

The Ancient Macedonians were of Greek origin and spoke a broader rougher dialect of Greek."

Those who live in Skopje [FYROM's capital], and say that is Macedon and Alexander’s homeland, are as ignorant and outrageous as if someone was to say that Oxford University was really in Belarus and Oxford was Minsk!"
...............................................................
The “Macedonia name issue” (the disagreement over the use of the name "Macedonia" between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) is not simply a dispute over historical facts and symbols. It is a problem with regional and international dimensions, given that FYROM is exercising a policy of irredentism and territorial claims fuelled by the falsification of history and the usurpation of Greece's historical and national heritage.
In its current form, the FYROM name issue arose in 1991, when FYROM declared its independence from Yugoslavia under the name Republic of Macedonia. Historically, the Greek name Macedonia refers to the state and civilisation of the ancient Macedonians, a Greek people, and bears no relation whatsoever with the residents of FYROM who identify themselves as “ethnic Macedonians” but are of Slavic (Bulgarian and Serbian) origin and arrived in the region of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, more than 1,000 years after the demise of the Macedonian kingdom.
The modern geographical term “Macedonia” refers to the Ottoman lands in Balknas that became identified as "Macedonia", a broader region that emerged in the late Ottoman era and includes portions of the territories of various countries (mainly Greece, FYROM and Bulgaria). However, the greater part of the modern geographical Macedonia corresponds to the area covered by the ancient Greek Macedonia, which lies within the boundaries of modern Greece and coincides with Macedonia, Greece, the biggest and second most populous Greek region. On the contrary, the modern state of the FYROM (which borders with Macedonia, Greece), coincides with the ancient kingdom of Paeonia, an enemy of Macedonia.
Some 2.5 million Greek citizens currently live in the Greek part of Macedonia, whose inhabitants have called and considered themselves Macedonians since time immemorial, and are unrelated to the Slavic people who are associated with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The name issue originated in the aftermath of the Second World War, when Josip Broz Tito separated the area then known as Vardar Banovina (now FYROM) from Serbia, granting it the status of a Republic within the new federal Yugoslavia, under the name Socialist Republic of Macedonia, concurrently promoting the doctrine of a separate “Macedonian” nation. It is now known that the most important reason for opting to promote the doctrine of “Macedonism” at clear variance with the geographical reality of the broader region of Macedonia, was his desire to gain access to the Aegean Sea by cultivating the notion of reunification of all the territories of the modern geographical Macedonia, following Comintern's (Communist International) orders.

Dorothy King against FYROM's (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) propaganda
Archaeologist Dorothy King states the historical truth and stands against FYROM's (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, which actually corresponds to ancient Paeonia) propaganda. The creator of this video (HellenicFighter) deserves all my gratitude. Stephen Batchelor, “The Ancient Greeks for Dummies”, 2008: "Macedonia was - and still is - a territory of northern Greece. The Ancient Macedonians were of Greek origin and spoke a broader rougher dialect of Greek."
Ovid [Author], Peter Green [Translator], "The Poems of Exile", University of California Press, 2005, p.319: “Ovid was lax in his geography, not least over Paeonia (in fact roughly coextensive with the present Slav republic of Macedonia.)”
Timothy Howe, Jeanne Reames, "Macedonian Legacies", Regina Books, 2008, p.239: “Paeonia, roughly where the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is today."
Ridvan Peshkopia, "Conditioning Democratization", Anthem Press, 2015, p.189:
“Besides the former kingdom of Macedon, the Roman region included the territories of Paeonia where the contemporary FYR Macedonia rests.”

Encyclopedia of World Geography, Volume 1, 2006, p.564: "Macedonian nationalism, as distinct from other South Slavic peoples is, moreover, a relatively new concept, introduced and encouraged by dictator Josip Tito, upon the creation of a separate Macedonian Republic within the Yugoslav federation in 1946. Prior to this, the area generally known as Vardarska banovina (the district of the Vardar river) was considered simply an extension of its southern Slavic neighbors, either Serbians to the north, or Bulgarians to the east. Slavs arrived in the Balkan Peninsula only in the 6th century AD, and therefore have nothing to do with the well-known classical kingdom of Macedonia, which dominated the rest of Greece, the Near East, Egypt and Persia under Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE.”

Macedonia & Bulgaria, Pearls of the Balkans (HD Video Travel Documentary)
Macedonia and Bulgaria are neighboring countries in the Balkans that have walked together in many stages of their history. They represent the past, present, and future of a region with a special relevance in the history of European nations. If you ever have the opportunity, please take your time to visit these two fascinating countries, definitely, the pearls of the Balkans. This travel documentary is not intended to provide an exhaustive review of both countries. It simply reflects my views and experiences during a sixteen-day family trip in August 2014.

By the eighth century BC, the Assyrians had created the largest empire to date - stretching from the Persian Mediterranean and encompassing the whole of the Middle East.
Philip of Macedonia transformed a largely peasant society into one of the most effective and successful armies of antiquity.
Ancient Assyrians starts at 00:10
Assyria was a major Semitic kingdom or empire of the Ancient Near East, existing in various forms during a period of approximately nineteen centuries from circa 2500 BC to 605 BC, spanning the Early Bronze Age through to the late Iron Age.
Ancient Macedonians starts at 23:38
The Macedonians were an ancient tribe from the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula, in the alluvial plain around the rivers Haliacmon and lower Axios.
Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common.
Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs.

Travel video about destination Macedonia.

Tikveš (Macedonian: Тиквеш) is a plain situated in central Republic of Macedonia which is known for an artificial lake. It is home to the towns of Kavadarci and Negotino. Famous for its wine, Tikveš is the center of the Macedonian wine production which has been cultivated for more than 120 years. The region is also very famous f
Wine industry

Since declaring independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Macedonia has attracted a trickle of intrepid travellers with its Balkan mountain beauty. For an alternative winter ski spot, try Popova Sapka in the Tetovo region, which boasts over 43 peaks and many mountain lakes. The locals will recommend Rakija, a traditional tipple similar to brandy that’s 60% proof, sure to keep you warm on the slopes.

Fourteen migrants have been hit by a train and killed in the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia.
It happened near the city of Veles, as the group walked through a canyon, along a route increasingly used by people trying to reach western Europe.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by difficult terrain, with the area only accessible by rail or on foot.
Most of the migrants appeared to be from Somalia and Afghanistan, according to a state prosecutor.

Robin Lane Fox on Macedonia
Robin Lane Fox on Macedonia
Robin Lane Fox on Macedonia - Professor Robin Lane Fox, University of Oxford, states the historical truth and stands against FYROM's (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) propaganda."I think there is a message that is historical but still politically has to be said: Macedon is a Greek-Speaking kingdom in Northern Greece, populated by people using Greek names, Greek months and worshipping Greek Gods. Those who live in Skopje [FYROM's capital], and say that is Macedon and Alexander’s homeland, are as ignorant and outrageous as if someone was to say that Oxford University was really in Belarus and Oxford was Minsk!"
...............................................................

Some 2.5 million Greek citizens currently live in Macedonia, Greece, whose inhabitants have called and considered themselves Macedonians since time immemorial, and are unrelated to the Slavic people who are associated with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. It is now known that the most important reason for opting to promote the doctrine of “Macedonism” at clear variance with the geographical reality of the broader region of Macedonia, was his desire to gain access to the Aegean Sea by cultivating the notion of reunification of all the territories of the modern geographical Macedonia, following Comintern's (Communist International) orders.
.................................................

Military History : Ancient Assyria and Ancient Macedonia
Military History : Ancient Assyria and Ancient Macedonia

One man can live his life Between grief and glory Choosing a way to walk, no Matter what it takes And at the final step before The greatest journey The only he could see the deeds he leaves behind One nation starts to grow and walk through the ages Creating history that no man ever doubt Times when the dark was thick And life was out of value Lights of Democracy where Bright around the place And they lived in harmony Changed the course of History In the meantime troops of Darkness Start to gather round Magnetized by your brightness Land of living Gods And they live in misery Building walls, what irony! They want to steal from Macedonia The Macedonia Never gonna get you and I believe that you know That I 'll be killing what theyre dreaming And I hope you ll understand Time to see Never let the lizard To be near you Because the lizard Changes colors And its trying to take in you Then one day your son will Rise, Father of Our Land Leader and Protector of the Macedonians Troops of Lions on his side, March against the walls Crushing down the puppet leaders and their dirty world Even though your ages older I can hear your laugh Cause they want to live Your Future People with no past But You re dressed in blue and white Like the colours in your sky
