The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. Since February 2006, NASA's mission statement has been to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research." On September 14, 2011, NASA announced that it had selected the design of a new Space Launch System that it said would take the agency's astronauts farther into space than ever before and provide the cornerstone for future human space exploration efforts by the U.S.

Colombia's second annual National Peace Prize has been awarded to an indigenous group from the war-torn province of Cauca.
One of Germanys oldest charity organisations, Foundation Friedrich Edert, the Colombian government and various Colombian companies sponsor the prize, which seeks to recognize people or organisations which promote peace.
The winning project, NASA - an indigenous acronym for 'to make memory with a community spirit' - brings together 14 indigenous groups from the northern department of Cauca which have been working together for 20 years to save their culture.
Representatives of the project say their community has been torn apart by decades of conflict.
Echoing the wider frustrations of a country on its knees, the community says it feels let down by a peace process which seldom favours the interests of those caught in the crossfire.
The judges awarded the prize to the group for trying to save the culture of the 78-thousand people who live in the province in the face of the armed conflict.
NASA has been trying to negotiate independently with the armed groups while working on projects that help the communities there develop.
The winners will get 25-thousand U-S dollars.
This year 227 organisations or people were nominated for the prize.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"We think that we aren't represented by either of the two sides (of the peace process negotiations) much like the majority of the Colombian people. We have instead been constructing an alternative in terms of constructing peace."

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"In one way or another we are an indigenous community whose values which we must now rebuild. We are a community who have been deprived of autonomous development."
SUPER CAPTION: Alcibiades Escue, President of the Indigenous Association of Cauca

"Like all Colombians, we are victims in a war which is not ours. We don't understand it nor do we support the reasons for which it exists."

CALEB & MOLLY: AND THIS IS NASA 360.
MOLLY: THIS IS THE CONTINUING STORY OF NASA'S SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE. AT LAST YEAR'S CHALLENGE, SIX TEAMS MADE IT TO WPI TO COMPETE FORTHE $1.5 MILLION PRIZE PURSE. IT WAS AN INTENSE COMPETITION. NOT FAMILIAR WITH CENTENNIAL CHALLENGES? NO WORRIES. CALEB, LET'S GET 'EM CAUGHT UP.
CALEB: I'M HERE WITH LARRY COOPER, PROGRAM EXECUTIVE OF CENTENNIAL CHALLENGES.
LARRY COOPER: HI, CALEB. HOW ARE YOU DOING TODAY?
CALEB: I'M DOING WELL. DOING WELL. SO, LARRY, WHAT EXACTLY IS A CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE?
LARRY COOPER: WELL, A CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE IS A NASA PRIZE COMPETITION PROGRAM. THESE PRIZE COMPETITIONS APPEAL TO A DIFFERENT CLASS OF INNOVATORS, AND LITERALLY, IT'S A WAY FOR ANYBODY THAT HAS A GOOD IDEA AND AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT TO POTENTIALLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATION'S SPACE PROGRAM.
CALEB: WELL, AS A WHOLE, WHY ARE THESE TYPE OF CHALLENGES IMPORTANT?
LARRY COOPER: THE AGENCY NEEDS ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TO DO OUR MISSIONS IN EARTH SCIENCES AND SPACE SCIENCES AND AERONAUTICS AND HUMAN EXPLORATION, AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE A SPACE TECHNOLOGY MISSION DIRECTORATE NOW.
CALEB: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PAST SUCCESSES THAT HAVE COME FROM THE CHALLENGES?
LARRY COOPER: OUR ASTRONAUT GLOVE CHALLENGE, LIKE--THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. WE WERE LOOKING FOR AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE GLOVE SO THAT THE ASTRONAUT WOULDN'T GET AS MUCH HAND STRAIN. TWO OF THE PEOPLE THAT WON OUR COMPETITION HAVE GONE ONTO CREATE COMPANIES. AND THEY'RE OFFERING THOSE TECHNOLOGIES TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE GONNA BE FLYING TOURISTS TO SPACE LATER ON. WE HAD A CHALLENGE WHICH WAS OUR LUNAR LANDER CHALLENGE, AND TWO COMPANIES, YOU KNOW, THAT WON IN THOSE COMPETITIONS ARE PROVIDING COMMERCIAL ACCESS IN SUPPORT OF NASA AND OTHER SPACE ENTREPRENEURS NOW. WE'RE VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN SEEING THESE TECHNOLOGIES BENEFIT EVERYBODY.
CALEB: NOW, CAN YOU BRIEFLY EXPLAIN WHAT THE SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CHALLENGE IS?
LARRY COOPER: WELL, SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CHALLENGE IS A COMPETITION FOCUSED ON ROBOTS AND THE AUTONOMOUS SOFTWARE FOR THOSE ROBOTS TO GO OFF AND IDENTIFY AND COLLECT SAMPLES. IN MY THINKING, IT'S KIND OF LIKE A GIANT EASTER EGG HUNT FOR A ROBOT.
MOLLY: AT THE LAST SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CHALLENGE, THERE WERE COMPETITORS, THE ROVERS THEY BUILT, AND THE LESSONS THEY LEARNED. THERE WERE FRUSTRATIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THERE WERE SETBACKS AND SUCCESSES. BUT THERE WERE NO WINNERS, SO THE BIG QUESTION IS, WHAT ABOUT THIS YEAR?
CALEB: WE ARE BACK AT BEAUTIFUL WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE FOR YEAR TWO OF NASA'S SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CENTENNIAL CHALLENGE. AND THIS YEAR, IT'S TOUGHER THAN EVER. THE TEAMS HAVE TRAVELLED FROM NEAR AND FAR. THE ROBOTS ARE RARING TO GO, AND EVERYBODY'S EAGER TO SEE IF SOMEONE WILL GO HOME WITH $1.5 MILLION. BEFORE WE GET TO THE COMPETITION, LET'S TALK WITH CENTENNIAL CHALLENGES PROGRAM MANAGER,SAM ORTEGA. SAM, WHY ARE WE BACK HERE AT WPI?
SAME ORTEGA: SO WE'RE BACK AT WPI TO DO A CONTINUATION OF THE SAMPLE RETURN ROBOT CHALLENGE.
CALEB: WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO KEEP DOING THIS CHALLENGE?
SAM ORTEGA: WHEN WE ESTABLISH OUR CHALLENGES AND WE DEVELOP THE COMPETITIONS THEMSELVES, WE SET THE BAR AT A LEVEL THAT WE DON'T EXPECT TO COMPLETE WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR. GENERALLY, IT TAKES US THREE TO FIVE YEARS TO COMPLETE A CHALLENGE. SO LAST YEAR, THE TEAMS WERE GETTING THEIR FOOTING AND GETTING AN UNDERSTANDING AND A FEEL FOR WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR THE COMPETITION. THIS YEAR, AS THE TEAMS HAVE PROGRESSED IN THEIR TECHNOLOGY LEVELS, WE ARE ANTICIPATING THAT WE WOULD BE ABLE TO AWARD SOME LEVEL ONE PRIZE MONEY.
CALEB: THIS ENTIRE CHALLENGE IS ABOUT AUTONOMY, YOU KNOW, SO WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT FOR NASA?
SAM ORTEGA: WELL, SO AUTONOMY FOR NASA IS GONNA ALLOW US TO GO RESEARCH AND GO SEARCH OTHER PLACES, OTHER WORLDS, GO SEARCH ASTEROID SURFACES, BE ABLE TO TAKE ROBOTS TO PLACES WE HAVE NEVER GONE BEFORE.
CALEB: THIS IS A STORY ABOUT CHALLENGES...
MOLLY: A STORY ABOUT COMPETITION...
CALEB: A STORY ABOUT TECHNOLOGY...
MOLLY: A STORY ABOUT TEAMWORK...

NASA’s Newest Space Telescope is Calibrated by the Same Technology Now Used in LASIK
The Hubble Space Telescope launched with an error in the telescope’s mirror, which blurred its images for its first years in orbit. For NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, traveling much farther out in space, there can’t be a mistake.
The technology that’s ensuring perfect vision for the James Webb Space Telescope is the same technology that’s now used in LASIK. Abbott just launched the iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio System, a measurement and treatment tool that uses a new sensor to create a precise, personalized LASIK treatment.

The sun emitted a significant solar flare, peaking at 7:24 p.m. EST on Dec. 19, 2014. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun constantly, captured an image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. A NASA-sponsored researcher at the University of Iowa has developed a way for spacecraft to hunt down hidden magnetic portals in the vicinity of Earth. These gateways link the magnetic field of our planet to that of the sun, setting the stage for stormy space weather. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission will study these portals. New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft. Then, as part of an extended mission, New Horizons would visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune.
Science at the Frontier
Our solar system contains three zones: the inner, rocky planets; the gas giant planets; and the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is one of the largest bodies of the icy, "third zone" of our solar system. The National Academy of Sciences placed the exploration of the third zone in general - and Pluto-Charon in particular - among its highest priority planetary mission rankings for this decade. New Horizons is NASA's mission to fulfill this objective.
In those zones, our solar system has three classes of planets: the rocky worlds (Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars); the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune); and the ice dwarfs of the Kuiper Belt. There are far more ice dwarf planets than rocky and gas giant worlds combined - yet, no spacecraft has been sent to a planet in this class. The National Academy of Sciences noted that our knowledge of planetary types is therefore seriously incomplete. As the first mission to investigate this new class of planetary bodies, New Horizons will fill this important gap and round out our knowledge of the planets in our solar system.
Ancient Relics
The ice dwarfs are planetary embryos, whose growth stopped at sizes (200 to 2,000 kilometers across) much smaller than the full-grown planets in the inner solar system and the gas giants region. The ice dwarfs are ancient relics that formed over 4 billion years ago. Because they are literally the bodies out of which the larger planets accumulated, the ice dwarfs have a great deal to teach us about planetary formation. New Horizons seeks those answers.
Binary Planet
Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. The pair form a binary planet, whose gravitational balance point is between the two bodies. Although binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type.
A Mission with Impact
The Kuiper Belt is the major source of cometary impactors on Earth, like the impactor that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Horizons will shed new light on the number of such Kuiper Belt impactors as a function of their size by cataloging the various-sized craters on Pluto, its moons, and on Kuiper Belt Objects.
Pluto and the Kuiper Belt are known to be heavily endowed with organic (carbon-bearing) molecules and water ice — the raw materials out of which life evolves. New Horizons will explore the composition of this material on the surfaces of Pluto, its moons and Kuiper Belt Objects.
The Great Escape
Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet, but on a planetary scale. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the solar system. It is thought that the Earth's original hydrogen/helium atmosphere was lost to space this way. By studying Pluto's atmospheric escape, we can learn a great deal about the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. New Horizons will determine Pluto's atmospheric structure and composition and directly measure its escape rate for the first time.
The Need to Explore
As the first voyage to a whole new class of planets in the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons is a historic mission of exploration. The United States has made history by being the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt - the first NASA launch to a "new" planet since Voyager more than 30 years ago - allows the U.S. to complete the reconnaissance of the solar system.

Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
To see how this event may affect Earth, please visit NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center at http://spaceweather.gov, the U.S. government's official source for space weather forecasts, alerts, watches and warnings.
This flare is classified as an X1.8-class flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.

Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field
07.02.12
A NASA-sponsored researcher at the University of Iowa has developed a way for spacecraft to hunt down hidden magnetic portals in the vicinity of Earth. These gateways link the magnetic field of our planet to that of the sun, setting the stage for stormy space weather. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission will study these portals. Credit: Science@NASA
A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....
It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.
"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."
Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras.
NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work.
Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.
Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them.
Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."
To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago.
"In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission."
Data from NASA's Polar spacecraft, circa 1998, provided crucial clues to finding magnetic X-points.Credit: NASA Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements."
This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay.
It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.

The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 3:01 p.m. EDT on Oct. 2, 2014. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun 24-hours a day, captured images of the flare. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
This flare is classified as an M7.3 flare. M-class flares are one-tenth as powerful as the most powerful flares, which are designated X-class flares.

It's classroom experience taken to a real world level. Students drove their final masterpiece to NASA this past May, and presented it to engineers in person.
"There were some designs they were really interested in. So that was good to see," said OSU senior Tom Thomas.
The students are very modest about their achievement, but Joe says they did extraordinary work and NASA was impressed. The designs will likely influence the first deep space mission.
"You have to satisfy the customer and that customer was NASA," said Joe. "And NASA was very happy and satisfied at the design."
The course is titled Industrial Engineering 4373-5373. NASA hopes to continue this exclusive partnership so students year after year can help with different projects.

MIST at NASA Lunabotics/ Robotics Mining Competition 2013
A team of Military Institute of Science and Technology created ripples at NASA’s Fourth Annual Lunabotics Mining competition. It was the first time, engineers, astronauts and the audience, present at the Kennedy Space Center in USA, saw a Bangladeshi team — “MIST LUNABOTICS EKUSH” (from the Aeronautical Engineering Department of Military Institute of Science and Technology) — bagging trophies, leaving behind many reputed institutions from around the world.
MIST team has also set the record of accomplishing the highest number of awards in the competition this year, among the 50 universities from eight different countries who took part. The MIST team which made the robot named Robomist-2, has secured: (Check out competition winners!)
· First position in Outreach Project
· Second position in System Engineering Paper
· Third position in Team Spirit Category
· First position in Luna Worldwide Campaign
In the Mining category, the team secured 11th position. However, overall performance was excellent and it was a huge success to be 6th in overall ranking — fetching the “Joe Kosmo Award for Excellence”.
Under supervision of Group Captain Md. Abdus Salam, Head of Aeronautical Engineering Department; the eight-members team — formed by Rejwanul Haque, Bodiuzzaman Jony, Shamir Shakir Shishir, Syed Ehsanur Rahman, Rayhan Siddique Ontu, Shamaun Sobhan Shohan, Tasmirul Jalil Tanmoy and Suvessa Chakraborty — was selected to go USA to attend the competition (from May 20-24).

COLOMBIA: NATIONAL PEACE PRIZE AWARDED
Spanish/Nat

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"Like all Colombians, we are victims in a war which is not ours. We don't understand it nor do we support the reasons for which it exists."

CALEB: A STORY ABOUT TECHNOLOGY...
MOLLY: A STORY ABOUT TEAMWORK...
CALEB: A STORY ABOUT TRIUMPHS AND SETBACKS...
MOLLY: A STORY ABOUT EXPLORATION...
CALEB: A STORY ABOUT THE PAST AND FUTURE. I'M CALEB KINCHLOW.
MOLLY: AND I'M MOLLY MCKINNEY.

New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]

NASA | Holiday Lights On the Sun
The sun emitted a significant solar flare, peaking at 7:24 p.m. EST on Dec. 19, 2014. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun constantly, captured an image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation.

OSU engineering students collaborate with NASA on deep space habitat
From January to May, students created shuttle elements from scratch and tested them using virtual reality. Everything from toilets and showers to exercise equipment and storage. Every two weeks, the students video conferenced with NASA engineers to check on the progress.
"They would look at what we had done over the past two weeks and give us pointers and critiques," said OSU junior Jo Sands.
"They very professionally took the criticism that NASA gave in terms of where to make the changes and, quite simply, amazed us," Joe said.
