There are film and still cameramen aboard the raft. Major General Emil F. Reinhardt of the 69th Infantry Division, and Major Clarence R. Huebner of the V Corps meet with Soviet Major Generals Ruskov and Backenau near Torgau. Soviet soldiers dance while another plays the accordion, and American soldiers look on. A man described in the NARA record as an "English war artist" paints a portrait of female Soviet soldiers.

In der Nacht zum 4.2.2016 lief das 399m lange Containerschiff CSCL INDIAN OCEAN auf der Elbe bei Lühe vor Hamburg auf Grund. Mit Schleppern konnte es nicht wieder ins Fahrwasser zurück bugsiert werden, zumal die folgenden Hochwasser niedriger ausfielen als jenes in der Unfallnacht. Das 2015 in Dienst gestellte Schiff unter Hongkong-Flagge ist 59m breit und kann bis zu 19.000 TEU aufnehmen, ist also eines der größtes Containerfrachter der Welt.
Die Bilder entstanden am Morgen des 5.2., kurz nach Tagesanbruch bei Ebbe, im Lauf des vormittags stieg der Elbepegel an, das Schiff saß aber weiterhin fest. Eine Bergung wird sich wohl noch hinziehen.

The Port of Hamburg is a port in Hamburg, Germany, on the River Elbe. The harbour is located 110 kilometres from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea. It is named Germany's "Gateway to the World" and is the largest port in Germany. In terms of TEU throughput, the port of Hamburg is the third-busiest port in Europe (after the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th-largest worldwide. The harbour covers an area of 73.99 km² (64.80 km² usable), of which 43.31 km² (34.12 km²) are land areas. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transshipment facilities. The River Elbe flows through the centre of Hamburg and is the port's lifeline to the North Sea. It is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia (Czech Republic), then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 km (68 mi) northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 kilometres (680 mi). This film begins in central Hamburg on the Eastern bank of the River Elbe, where footage shows both heavy shipping and much smaller personal and passenger craft. It then focuses on the cruise ship MSC Magnifica, which is ported at Hamburg Cruise Terminal (near Altona). After this the footage is directly taken from the MSC Magnifica, and firstly shows surrounding views of the Port, River Elbe and City of Hamburg. Before the journey North out of Hamburg begins. From here onwards, footage is of the Port, passing shipping including Hapag Lloyd passenger vessels, a paddle steamer, ferries and container ships. Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport is featured, with good views of an Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter) or Beluga, which is parked by one of the hangars. After this footage goes to the wider Elbe, where the city disappears and gives way to rural and agricultural land as the sun begins to set in the distance. The film ends at night as the MSC Magnifica approaches the Elbe estuary to enter the North Sea. Tony Vaccaro, a veteran of 83rd Infantry Division in World War II argues that is incorrect. That is where the fun begins, as he documents with personal photographs the 83rd Infantry Division's operations on the way to Berlin. While the other units celebrated V-E Day west of the Elbe, the 83rd Infantry Division and the 2nd Armored Division stopped nearly at the Gate of Charlottenburg of Berlin. CSCL Indian Ocean auf Grund gelaufen - Haverie auf der Elbe
Am Mittwoch gegen 22 Uhr lief das Containerschiff CSCL Indian Ocean nach dem Ausfall der Ruderanlage bei Lühe auf Grund. Die noch in der Nacht herbeigerufenen sechs Schlepper konnten das 400 Meter lange Schiff nicht befreien. Am folgenden Tag wurde mit sieben Schleppern bei Hochwasser ein erneuter Bergungsversuch unternommen, der jedoch ebenfalls ohne Erfolg blieb. Neben der CSCL Indian Ocean ist im Video noch das Mehrzweckschiff Neuwerk zu sehen, das eine rote Fahrwassertonne geborgen hat. Diese befand sich unmittelbar vor dem Bug des havarierten Containerschiffes und störte offenbar bei den Schleppversuchen. In der Nacht zum 4.2.2016 lief das 399m lange Containerschiff CSCL INDIAN OCEAN auf der Elbe bei Lühe vor Hamburg auf Grund. Mit Schleppern konnte es nicht wieder ins Fahrwasser zurück bugsiert werden, zumal die folgenden Hochwasser niedriger ausfielen als jenes in der Unfallnacht. Das 2015 in Dienst gestellte Schiff unter Hongkong-Flagge ist 59m breit und kann bis zu 19.000 TEU aufnehmen, ist also eines der größtes Containerfrachter der Welt.
Die Bilder entstanden am Morgen des 5.2., kurz nach Tagesanbruch bei Ebbe, im Lauf des vormittags stieg der Elbepegel an, das Schiff saß aber weiterhin fest. Eine Bergung wird sich wohl noch hinziehen.

The Port of Hamburg is a port in Hamburg, Germany, on the River Elbe. The harbour is located 110 kilometres from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea.
It is named Germany's "Gateway to the World" and is the largest port in Germany. In terms of TEU throughput, the port of Hamburg is the third-busiest port in Europe (after the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th-largest worldwide.
The harbour covers an area of 73.99 km² (64.80 km² usable), of which 43.31 km² (34.12 km²) are land areas. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transshipment facilities.
The River Elbe flows through the centre of Hamburg and is the port's lifeline to the North Sea. It is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia (Czech Republic), then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 km (68 mi) northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 kilometres (680 mi).
This film begins in central Hamburg on the Eastern bank of the River Elbe, where footage shows both heavy shipping and much smaller personal and passenger craft. It then focuses on the cruise ship MSC Magnifica, which is ported at Hamburg Cruise Terminal (near Altona).
After this the footage is directly taken from the MSC Magnifica, and firstly shows surrounding views of the Port, River Elbe and City of Hamburg. Before the journey North out of Hamburg begins.
From here onwards, footage is of the Port, passing shipping including Hapag Lloyd passenger vessels, a paddle steamer, ferries and container ships.
Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport is featured, with good views of an Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter) or Beluga, which is parked by one of the hangars.
After this footage goes to the wider Elbe, where the city disappears and gives way to rural and agricultural land as the sun begins to set in the distance. The film ends at night as the MSC Magnifica approaches the Elbe estuary to enter the North Sea.

The Port of Hamburg is a port in Hamburg, Germany, on the River Elbe. The harbour is located 110 kilometres from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea.
It is named Germany's "Gateway to the World" and is the largest port in Germany. In terms of TEU throughput, the port of Hamburg is the third-busiest port in Europe (after the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th-largest worldwide.
The harbour covers an area of 73.99 km² (64.80 km² usable), of which 43.31 km² (34.12 km²) are land areas. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transshipment facilities.
The River Elbe flows through the centre of Hamburg and is the port's lifeline to the North Sea. It is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia (Czech Republic), then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 km (68 mi) northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 kilometres (680 mi).
This film begins in central Hamburg on the Eastern bank of the River Elbe, where footage shows both heavy shipping and much smaller personal and passenger craft. It then focuses on the cruise ship MSC Magnifica, which is ported at Hamburg Cruise Terminal (near Altona).
After this the footage is directly taken from the MSC Magnifica, and firstly shows surrounding views of the Port, River Elbe and City of Hamburg. Before the journey North out of Hamburg begins.
From here onwards, footage is of the Port, passing shipping including Hapag Lloyd passenger vessels, a paddle steamer, ferries and container ships.
Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport is featured, with good views of an Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter) or Beluga, which is parked by one of the hangars.
After this footage goes to the wider Elbe, where the city disappears and gives way to rural and agricultural land as the sun begins to set in the distance. The film ends at night as the MSC Magnifica approaches the Elbe estuary to enter the North Sea.

Am Mittwoch gegen 22 Uhr lief das Containerschiff CSCL Indian Ocean nach dem Ausfall der Ruderanlage bei Lühe auf Grund. Die noch in der Nacht herbeigerufenen sechs Schlepper konnten das 400 Meter lange Schiff nicht befreien. Am folgenden Tag wurde mit sieben Schleppern bei Hochwasser ein erneuter Bergungsversuch unternommen, der jedoch ebenfalls ohne Erfolg blieb. Neben der CSCL Indian Ocean ist im Video noch das Mehrzweckschiff Neuwerk zu sehen, das eine rote Fahrwassertonne geborgen hat. Diese befand sich unmittelbar vor dem Bug des havarierten Containerschiffes und störte offenbar bei den Schleppversuchen.
Ihren Anker samt Kette hat die CSCL Indian Ocean laut WSV in der Deutschen Bucht vor Helgoland verloren. Als weiteres Unterwasserhindernis wurde heute eine Ankerkette in der Elbemündung auf Höhe Brunsbüttel gemeldet. Möglicherweise gehört diese ebenfalls zum Havaristen.

The stuck containership CSCL Indian Ocean was refloated on early Tuesday morning between 2:00 and 2:20 am local time and towed back in the channel of the Elbe river. 12 tug boats with a total bollard pull of 1085 tons were taking part of the salvage operation including two of the world's most powerful tug boats, the UNION MANTA and the FAIRMOUNT EXPEDITION. Mega containership CSCL Indian Ocean which has been stranded in the river Elbe for days has finally been freed by German maritime authorities.Namely, the salvage operation was launched at 2am today by a fleet of 12 tugs of the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CCME), which shortly after managed to tow the ship’s stern off the bank.The 12 tugboats have a total bollard pull of 1085 tons on scene, which was deemed enough to pull free the 2015-built vessel, one of the world’s biggest boxships.The on-scene-coordinator of CCME and the salvage experts of the shipping company remained on the bridge of the CSCL Indian Ocean during the towing-attempt.Once the boxship was freed the tugs started to reposition the ship for towing to Hamburg Port. The salvage authorities have also tested the vessel’s operation systems which are reported to be running fine, with the rudder in full operation.The containership will now be towed to Hamburg Port by 5 tugs.The salvage teams launched the towing operation having lightened the ship for around 6506 tons, mainly fuel and ballast water.Additionally, dredgers have removed about 45000m³ of ground, especially along the whole starboard side, at the stern and the bow to help free the 184,320 dwt boxship.CSCL Indian Ocean, owned by Shanghai-based China Shipping Container Lines, grounded on the Elbe river in Hamburg on February 3 due to a failure in the navigation system.There were no injuries to the vessel’s crew and no pollution was reported in the area.

The stuck containership CSCL Indian Ocean was refloated on early Tuesday morning between 2:00 and 2:20 am local time and towed back in the channel of the Elbe river. 12 tug boats with a total bollard pull of 1085 tons were taking part of the salvage operation including two of the world's most powerful tug boats, the UNION MANTA and the FAIRMOUNT EXPEDITION. Additionally, the companies KOTUG Offshore and Smit Salvage (Costa Concordia) were hired to support the salvage. 26 vessels and the CCME’s pollution control aircraft participated in the entire operation.

Am 04. Febr. 2016 gegen Mittag wurde mit der auflaufenden Flut ein neuer Versuch gestartet das Containerschiff frei zu ziehen, dies ist leider nicht gelungen. Ein dritter Bergungsversuch ist auch heute am 05. Febr. gescheitert. Der Frachter sitzt möglicherweise noch länger fest!
Die genaue Unfallursache wird wohl weiter diskutiert werden, aber nun stellt sich die Frage, wie stark schwanken die Solltiefen der Fahrrinne unter Kartennull (KN) in diesem Abschnitt der Unterelbe, Lühesand!

You need only 27 minutes for this very short slide show video on our Elbe river biicycle trip, all copied from my iPhone. If any of you have some spare energy and time this is very easy to organise. 1) Fly to Hamburg and rent an e-bike 2) get a relevant biking map (Elbe Ratweg)at a bookshop 3) buy two saddle bags and transfer your minimalist luggage for the trip. 4) The bike lane goes all along the river for 1000 km and is in top condition. 5) There are a hundred cities, villages and towns with hundreds of restaurants and small comfy family run hotels all along the way so you do not have to pre-book anything. At about 3pm you start calling local hotels in places ahead of you. No hills or mountains along rivers so you can do easy 50 to 70 km in a day including breaks for luch, coffee an... -

A ceremony is set to take place at the Memorial of Encounter in the German town of Torgau on Saturday, April 25, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Elbe day.

The Speicherstadt is part of the harbor and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting.
The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany with its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive.
City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by 4,000 oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster.

Der Kurort Rathen liegt in der Nähe von Pirna und Bad Schandau. Die Eisenbahnwelten liegen fast am Elbufer in Höhe der Fähre, wo es zum Basteigebiet geht. Seit 2007 gibt es die Gartenbahn in der Baugröße G. Neben dem interessanten Fahrbetrieb findet man auch viele Gebäude, hauptsächlich aus Sachsen. Die Schweizabteilung müsste neueren Datums sein?
Man sollte sich Zeit nehmen, um sich alles anzusehen, denn es gibt viele Gimmicks zu entdecken, auch nicht ganz jugendfreie. Wir werden bestimmt in den nächsten Jahren mal wiederkommen, denn wir hatten nicht genug Zeit eingeplant. Für Eisenbahnfreunde gibt es in der Nähe das Feldbahnmuseum Herrenleite, die Kirnitzschtalbahn und die Kleine Sächsische Schweiz in Wehlen.

You should take time to see everything, because there are many gimmicks to discover. For railway enthusiasts there is nearby the Feldbahnmuseum (Field railway museum) Herrenleite, the Kirnitzschtalbahn (a street tram) and the Little Saxon Switzerland in Wehlen, also a garden railway.

The Speicherstadt is part of the harbor and is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is crossed by canals that are known as fleets. It was once what amounted to a city of warehouses whose Gothic brick architecture with gables, pinnacles and arches created an extraordinary setting.
The tower of St. Michaelis Church is lovingly known as 'Michel' and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It is also one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the north of Germany with its white, grey and golden interior being particularly impressive.
City Hall highlights the power of the autonomous Hansestadt Hamburg. This impressive building is supported by 4,000 oak posts in the former swampland of the Alster.

A significant part of this journey follows the River Elbe along the Elbe Valley and includes some stunning Winter scenery of the sandstone Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Swiss) mountains and rock formations, as well as traditional rural towns and villages. The River Elbe itself flows from the Czech Republic into Saxony and onto Hamburg.
This footage includes the departure from Dresden Hauptbahnhof, the Dresden suburbs, lower Saxony including urban and (mainly) rural areas including locations such as Heidenau, Pirna, Konigstein and Bad Schandau. Footage also includes the North East Czech Republic countryside, mountains, woodland, forest, and urban areas heading towards Dečín. This train was hauled by a Czech class 371 electric locomotive.
Upon leaving Dresden if you listen carefully you can hear German Police officers checking the identities of people on the train.

The National Weather Service is warning that bands of torrential rain moving through Oklahoma could cause rivers in the region to flood and overflow their banks. The weather service issued a flood advisory Tuesday for the massive Illinois River near Tahlequah in eastern Oklahoma, cautioning that the rains could cause the river to rise to 10.9 feet by Friday. Flood stage on the river is 11 feet....

The Gorge Dam on the Cuyahoga River between Akron and Cuyahoga Falls could be coming down in 2019 ... The Cuyahoga River from Akron to Cleveland is on that national priority list ... Removing the dam, plus another in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, would create 60 miles of a free-flowing and healthier Cuyahoga River from Lake Erie to the Lake Rockwell dam north of Kent in Portage County....
