Riverine forests are vulnerable ecosystems that urgently require protection and effective monitoring strategies in the rural agricultural landscape of Rio de Janeiro. These ecosystems are important ecological structures considered as Permanent Preservation Areas (Área de Preservação Permanente - APP) according to the Brazilian Federal Law 12.651. Even though these areas are protected by law, there are no appropriate mechanisms to assess and protect these forests. Additionally, intensive use of land and the expansion of agriculture in the area cause severe pressures over these ecosystems.
In this regard the present research addresses the development of a monitoring strategy for riverine forests based on drone technology and software analysis techniques. The aim is to combine these technologies and develop a practical toolkit that can be used by environmental managers and researchers to generate high quality information of APP riverine forests. This information can be potentially used to effectively monitor the ecological status of protected riverine ecosystems and to continuously verify the compliance of the environmental APP legislation.

In 2009, a group of NGOs, private companies, governments, and research institutions launched one of the most ambitious ecological restoration programs in the world – the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) Restoration Pact. The program has more than 260 members and has a mission to restore 15 million hectares of the forest by 2050. The Pact aims to promote biodiversity conservation, job creation and income generating opportunities through the restoration supply chain, provision of key ecosystem services to millions of people as well as to establish incentives for landowners to comply with the Forest Act. The coalition plans to restore more than 1 million hectares of land by the Bonn Challenge’s target of 2020.
Here Pedro Brancalion, an ecologist with the Pact, explains the approach they take to restoration in Brazil.

Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil) is the largest country in South America and fifth largest in the world. Famous for its football (soccer) tradition and its annual Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Recife and Olinda. It is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mosaic of São Paulo to the infinite cultural energy of Pernambuco and Bahia, the wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguaçu Falls, there is plenty to see and to do in Brazil.
see in Brazil
==========
Amazon Rainforest - The Amazon River Basin holds more than half of the world's remaining rainforest, and over 60% of that lies within the North of Brazil — approximately one billion acres with incredible biodiversity. The region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, over 40,000 plants species, 2200 fish species, and more than 2,000 types of birds and mammals. One in five of all the bird species in the world live in the rainforests of the Amazon, and one in five of the fish species live in Amazonian rivers and streams.
Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) - A region of tropical and subtropical forest which extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the Northeast to Rio Grande do Sul state in the South. The Atlantic Forest has a wide variety of vegetation, including the many tree species such as the iconic araucaria tree in the south or the mangroves of the northeast, dozens of types of bromeliads and orchids, and unique critters such as capivara. The forest has also been designated a World Biosphere Reserve, with a large number of highly endangered species including the well-known marmosets, lion tamarins and woolly spider monkeys.
Campos Gerais - With a vast vegetation of grasses and areas of transition between the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, this region offers beautiful scenery of cliffs and canyons, as Jaguaricatú Valley, beyond the fifth and the eighth most extensive canyons in the world, which are respectively Guartelá and Jaguariaíva . Jaguariaíva the canyon is made more beautiful rafting activity in Brazil.
Pantanal - A vast tropical wetland expanse, one of the world's largest. 80% of it lies within the state of Mato Grosso do Sul but it also extends into Mato Grosso (as well as into portions of Bolivia and Paraguay), sprawling over an area estimated at between 140,000 and 195,000 square kilometers (54,000-75,000 sq mi).
Waterfalls (Cachoeiras) - Brazil has an amazing range of impressive waterfalls of all sizes and shapes. Iguaçu Falls, in eastern Parana, is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, truly a sight to see. The 353-meter Cachoeira da Fumaça in Bahia's Chapada Diamantina National Park is the country's second highest waterfall, after the Amazon's almost inaccessible Cachoeira do Araca. Other famous waterfalls include Caracol Falls, in a Rio Grande do Sul state park of the same name near Canela, Itaquira Falls, an easily accessible 168-meter fall near Formosa, Goiás, and the gorge at Parque da Cascata near Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais.
Architecture
=============
Colonial architecture - Many cities have reminders of Brazil's colonial past, with churches, monasteries, forts, barracks, and other structures still intact. Some of the most concentrated and best-preserved colonial buildings can be found in old gold-mining towns such as Ouro Preto and Tiradentes, but many other cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, Salvador, Recife, Paraty, and Goiânia have quite significant colonial centers as well.
Oscar Niemeyer works - Niemeyer, Brazil's most famous architect, is a modern architectural pioneer who explores the aesthetic impact of reinforced concrete, using curves to create buildings with a unique sense of space. He is most famous for designing many of the buildings when the new capital of Brasilia was built in the 1950s, but his works literally dot the country, with major works in Natal, João Pessoa, Recife, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, São Paulo, Londrina and other locations.
Sports in Brazil
==============
Soccer - Soccer is the talk of the town wherever you are in Brazil, and the country is brimming with great teams and great players. Rio de Janeiro has the world-famous Maracanã Stadium, Mineirão in Belo Horizonte and Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo.
Volleyball - While soccer is the main sport in Brazil, is very normal to find spaces on the beaches where you can play beach volleyball, but this version of the sport possess a different code of rules than indoor volleyball (for example instead of six players, only two players are allowed to play on each team).

Travel video about destination Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a fascinating country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, a natural paradise between the Caribbean and the Pacific.Located at more than a thousand metres above sea level, San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central America’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate. The extent to which Costa Rica joins with European tradition can be seen in the Teatro Nacional. The coffee barons, to whom the glorious development of San José is owed, created taxes for the export of coffee beans and thus funded the construction of the magnificent building. In a fertile mountain valley at the foot of a volcano, is Turrialba, a town that radiates a serene calm but once was an important station on the route of the Jungle Train from San José to the Atlantic coast. The crater of the Poas Volcano is surrounded by the dense green of a rainforest and overlooks the north western Meseta Central. Although it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it is the most visited, as visitors can go by car almost to the edge of the crater. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attraction, a ride on an open gondola through the jungle. A journey of discovery amid a canopy of trees, hovering at treetop level through the solitude of nature. Fascinating nature, joie de vivre and colonial history are omnipresent on this land bridge between North and South America, Costa Rica is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

St. Lucia is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique.
The most important places to visit in St. Lucia are: St Lucia Volcano (is the only drive-in volcano in the world. There are several pots of boiling water that are above the normal boiling point and many colors at the surface as a result of sulfur, iron, calcium oxide, copper oxide, magnesium, carbon and other mineral deposited there), St. Lucia Beaches (there are several magnificent beaches in St Lucia. All you have to do sometimes is bring along your snorkel gear, play a few games or pull out a beach chair and frolic in the sun), St Lucia Hiking (you will have the opportunity to see the national bird, a breath taking view of the tallest mountain in St Lucia, mount Gimie and the forestry reserves) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important St. Lucia travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

In our latest travel video we showcase 21 things to do in the capital city of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada in this top attractions travel guide.
Fredericton is a city that offers culture vultures numerous historic buildings and attractions including top notch museums. For the adventure traveler or sports enthusiast extensive bike trails and the St John River offer endless exercise opportunities.
This summer we travelled out to Fredericton, New Brunswick to visit family. With a few weeks in town, we decided to make a little video guide to give you a taste of Atlantic Canada. Here's a look at 21 things you can do around the city:
1) Changing of the Guard
2) Haunted Hike at night
3) Kayaking the Saint John River
4) Government House
5) King's Landing
6) Old Train Bridge (Walking Bridge)
7) Waterloo Row
8) Farmers Market
9) Biking along the Nashwaak Trail
10) Odell Park
11) Highland Games
12) Historic Garrison District
13) Christ Church Cathedral
14) Legislative Building
15) Beaverbrook Art Gallery
16) Exercise along the St John River
17) Fine Art Gallery 78
18) Lighthouse on the Green
19) Science East
20) University of New Brunswick Campus
21) The Playhouse
Visiting King's Landing was like travelling back in time. We got to see the interior of old homes, churches, and barns from the 1800s, and for those looking to get their hands dirty, there was the option of pitching in with some of the farm work. The garrison district is the historic and cultural heart of Fredericton. This is where you can catch free performances, join heritage walking tours, and watch the changing of the guard. The Lighthouse on the Green stands on the banks of the St. John River. Though it once helped guide fishermen to shore, today the lighthouse is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy some seafood or even cool down with an ice cream. The nice thing about Fredericton is that you're never too far from nature. The city has many walking trails and biking paths that are easily accessible, and that means people spend a lot of time outdoors.
This former railway bridge is now popular with pedestrians. It has great views of the St. John River and the 2 university campuses that sit up on the hill. Waterloo Row is one of the prettiest streets in the city. It is lined with historic homes and mansions that look over the river. If you happen to be in town over the weekend, be sure to check out the Farmers' Market for some delicious eats!
The Nashwaak Trail is part of an extensive trail system and it's great for either walking or biking. We managed to spot quite a bit of wildlife during our outing, including a Great Blue Heron, a beaver, and lots of chipmunks. Gallery 78 is the oldest private art gallery in New Brunswick and it hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Christ Church Cathedral has a very active music schedule. During the summer months they host choirs and recitals. Admission is by donation with the proceeds going back into the community. The Legislative Building is the home to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. Guided visits must be arranged in advance. For art lovers, there's the option of visiting the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This gallery features the work of both Canadian and international artists. Odell Park is a massive park located in the middle of Fredericton. It has many trails that run through the forest and some of the trees there are believed to be over 400 years old. It's a nice green escape and the perfect place to exercise in the summer. The changing of the guard is a ceremony not to be missed. You can watch guards re-enact a drill ceremony to the beat of a piper and drummer. For a spooky look at the city's past, you can join a haunted hike that takes you on a walking tour of Fredericton after dark. Expect to meet lots of ghostly characters along the way. The best way to experience the St. John River is by going out on the water. If you drop by Second Nature Outdoors, you can rent kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards. This is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and it's where foreign dignitaries visiting Fredericton stay. This former jail turned science centre is a fun place for children. The university of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University have a shared campus with beautiful grounds. Even if you're not a student, the campus is worth a visit. If you're looking to catch a performance, then head down to the Playhouse. They host all sorts of music, dance, and theatre productions. And that's a little glimpse of Fredericton. We really enjoyed our summer visit to the city, and we hope you'll have the chance to check it out too!

Africa has 54 sovereign countries—the most on any continent—and is the second largest continent in terms of both land area and population. Africa is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, by the Red Sea to the northeast, and by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Africa is a vast continent spanning over 8,000km (5,000 mi) north to south and 7,500km (4,800 mi) east to west (not including islands) and contains a wide array of peoples, skin colours, religions, and cultures. Africa contains the world's longest river—the 6,650km long (4,100 mi) Nile River running from Burundi to Egypt—while the Congo River in the DRC is the second largest in terms of discharge as well as the deepest with a depth of over 230m (750 ft) in some spots. Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5,890m (19,340 ft). Djibouti's Lake Assal is the second lowest point on Earth, the saltiest lake outside Antarctica, and one of the hottest places on Earth.
While the first activity most people associate with Africa is safaris, there are endless possibilities for adventure. You can purchase crafts in markets, venture into the Sahara with a Tuareg caravan, visit pygmy villages, hike through jungle to watch gorillas, relax on tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, snack on exotic treats, travel down a river in a dugout "pirogue", travel across savannah on a colonial-era railway, and much more.
Africa is a very diverse continent, with each country, or even each part of a country having its own unique culture. While it is common for people in the West to refer to Africa as if it was a single country, one should remember the sheer size of the continent, and that Africa is not one country but 54 different countries, meaning that it is impossible to make generalisations of Africa as a whole.
Tragically misunderstood by many people as a land of poverty, corruption, war and famine, and simply as a land of suffering—a misconception only bolstered by the media and the numerous NGOs on the continent—Africa today is a vast continent with many bustling metropolises, friendly people, and amazingly diverse and beautiful landscapes. While there are some places resembling the stereotypical Africa of war, famine, and poverty, most of the continent is peaceful, well-fed, and of working class .

Natural Wonders
Africa is home to many famous natural wonders, from the Nile River, the world's longest river, to Victoria Falls. The continent is home to two of the world's four volcanoes with permanent lava lakes—the dramatic Mount Nyiragongo which rises hundreds of metres above Goma, DRC and Erta Ale in Ethiopia's stark Danakil Depression (the others are Mt.Erebus in Antarctica & Kilauea in Hawaii). Both volcanoes can be climbed by the adventurous tourist to stand at the rim gazing in awe at the bubbling lava below, an especially incredible sight at night!

Historical civilizations
While the continent's diverse and unique wildlife is often all that is mentioned in regards to African travel, as home to the oldest civilizations on the planet, Africa has equally impressive cultures and history. The most famous civilization on the continent, and arguably in the world, is that of ancient Egypt. From the southern city of Abu Simbel to Luxor and all the way north to Alexandria and Cairo, including the Pyramids of Giza, the only surviving of the original Seven Wonders of the World and the most iconic symbols of this ancient kingdom. Sites from the Nubian-Kushite Kingdom that broke away from Egypt can be found in Sudan, such as Gebel Barkal and many other pyramids in Meroe.
Ethiopia offers many ruins from the ancient Axumite Kingdom where the Queen of Sheba ruled. The obelisks and Dungur ruins in Axum were built prior to the kingdom's conversion to Christianity, while many other great monuments, such as the Ezana Stone and the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, where the Arc of the Covenant is said to be stored, were built after the conversion as religious sites. Other famous Christian structures built later by the kingdom's successor, the Abyssinian Empire, especially during the 12th and 13th centuries, can also be found in Lalibela.

Manaus is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in northern Brazil. It is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. With a population of two million, it is the most populous city of Amazonas.
The city was founded in 1693-94 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a town in 1832 with the name of "Manaus", an altered spelling of the indigenous Manaós peoples, and legally transformed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, Portuguese for "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4, 1856 it returned to its original name.
Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, and access to the city is primarily through boat or airplane. This isolation helped preserve both the nature as well as the culture of the city. The culture of Manaus, more than in any other urban area of Brazil, preserves the habits of Native Brazilian tribes. The city is the main entrance to visit the fauna and flora of the Brazilian Amazon. Few places in the world afford such a variety of plants, birds, insects, and fishes.
It was known at the beginning of the century, as "Heart of the Amazon" and "City of the Forest". Currently its main economic engine is the Industrial Pool of Manaus, the famous Free Economic Zone. The city has a free port and an international airport. Its manufactures include electronics, chemical products, and soap; there are distilling and ship construction industries. Manaus also exports Brazil nuts, rubber, jute and rosewood oil. It has a cathedral, opera house, zoological and botanical gardens, an ecopark and regional and native peoples museums.
With a population of 1.9 million people in 2014, Manaus is the most populous city in the Brazilian Amazon area and the 7th most populous in the country.[6] Located on the north bank of the Negro River, 11 miles (18 km) above the meeting of the rivers where the Negro merges with the Solimões, Manaus is 900 miles (1,450 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It is the hub of tourism for the rivers, the jungle lodges and the river cruises.
The Solimões and Negro rivers meet in Manaus and join to form the Amazon River (using the Brazilian definition of the river; elsewhere, Solimões is considered the upper part of the Amazon). Rubber made it the richest city in South America during the late 1800s. Rubber also helped Manaus earn its nickname, the "Paris of the Tropics". Many wealthy European families settled in Manaus and brought their love for sophisticated European art, architecture and culture with them. Manaus is also a duty-free zone, which has encouraged development in the region.

Brazil is the largest country in South America and fifth largest in the world.

Mata Atlantica, Bahia
================
Unfortunately, it has been extensively cleared since colonial times, mainly for the farming of sugar cane and for urban settlements — The remnants are estimated to be less than 10% of the original, and that is often broken into hilltop islands. However, large swaths of it are protected by hundreds of parks, including 131 federal parks, 443 state parks, and 14 municipal parks, most of which are open to visitation.
80% of the Pantanal floodplains are submerged during the rainy seasons, nurturing an astonishing biologically diverse collection of aquatic plants and helping support a dense array of animal species.
Aside from the nationally famous falls, in many parts of the country, particularly the South, Southeast, and Central West regions, you are rarely far from at least one locally-famous, named waterfall worth a short hike.
Architecture
=============

Veronica Hill explores the attractions of Long Beach in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Orange County, Long Beach makes a great day trip or long weekend. It's LA's second largest city — home to the historic Queen Mary, dozens of hip art galleries, and one of California's best aquariums, Aquarium of the Pacific.
Most Long Beach restaurants and shops are found at Shoreline Village. You can check out Wyland's famous Planet Ocean mural at Long Beach Sports Arena, or head to The Pike for a spin on the Ferris wheel. The 3-mile Long Beach Bike Path travels along the waterfront from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore.
Several fun Long Beach events are held throughout the year, including the popular Long Beach Grand Prix (http://www.lbgp.com) in April, and Comic and Horror Con, held twice yearly at Long Beach Convention Center.
One of the city's signature attractions is the RMS Queen Mary ship, which has been docked here since 1967. Sailing the Atlantic between 1936 and 1967, it was one of the most luxurious ocean liners of its time. Roughly twice the size of Titanic, the Queen Mary weighs over 81,000 tons and stretches more than 1,000 feet. Check out the Upper Deck, which offers great views of Downtown Long Beach, then enjoy a cocktail in the Observation Bar, which was once the First Class Lounge. For a fun evening on ship, enjoy dinner in Sir Winston's, followed by a ghost tour with paranormal expert Erika Frost.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is another good bet — filled with one of California's most impressive collections of Pacific Ocean sea life. More than a million gallons of sea water were barged in from Catalina Island to create this underwater sanctuary, which is divided into three major regions. The Southern California/Baja Gallery is home to playful seals, skates and rays, while the Northern Pacific Gallery showcases sub-arctic critters like horned puffins, sea otters and Japanese spider crabs. One of the most impressive galleries is the Tropical Pacific region, where a three-story tall predator tank provides a glimpse of barracudas, giant black sea bass and leopard sharks. In Shark Lagoon, you can pet bamboo, zebra and epaulette sharks in a shallow pool, then feed the birds in Lorikeet Forest.
Dozens of Long Beach cruises and whale watching trips are offered throughout the day, along with daily jaunts to Catalina Island. Around sunset, head south to Naples, where you can enjoy a romantic gondola ride through the canals with Long Beach Gondola Getaway.

The Danube basin in Europe extends almost 3,000 km from the Black Forest in Germany, through the Alps in Austria to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea coast of Romania. Covering over 800,000 km², this region of Europe is the land surrounding the Danube River, its tributaries and flood plains.
Dominated and both divided and united by the Danube River, the second longest river in Europe, the surrounding lands that form the Danube basin are steeped in history, with evidence that parts of it have been settled since the 5th millennium B.C.

Travel video about destination Amazonica in Brazil.
In today’s world, an expedition on an Amazonas ship into the depths of the rain forestmust surely be one of the most thrilling experiences possible. An adventure within a tropical world of wonder that has not yet been consumed by civilisation. Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian federal state of Amazonas, lies on the banks of the Rio Negro and is surrounded by impenetrable rain forest. From here explorers ventured further into the wilderness by boat and even today the Amazonians travel by boat as the rivers serve as roads through the jungle. The city’s huge cathedral was constructed during the rubber boom which made it prosper. A journey of several days is about to begin on the Amazon Clipper, upstream on the Rio Negro, one of the region’s main rivers, and into the vast jungle beyond. A self-contained system of more than a thousand inlets supply the Amazon, as well as water from the surrounding mountains. Numerous water courses, jungles and climatic zones form this region, from the Andes of Peru to as far as the Brazilian Delta where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Only from the pilot’s bridge is the tangled labyrinth of the many water courses between the region’s small islands, recognizable. Often the islands are flooded up to the tops of the trees. Soon we come to the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the largest fresh water archipelago on Earth, a huge complex of three hundred and fifty islands For the journey of a lifetime, the Amazon and its rain forests are an absolute must!

The "Atlantic Forest" is a terrestrial biome and region which extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina.
The Atlantic Forest has ecoregions within the following biome categories: Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, Tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, and Mangrove forests. The Atlantic Forest is characterized by a high species diversity and endemism.
It was the first environment that the Portuguese colonizers encountered over 500 years ago, when it was thought to have had an area of 1000000 to 1500000 square kilometers, and stretching an unknown distance inland. Currently, the Atlantic Forest spans over 4000 square kilometers along the coast of Brazil and in a small part of Paraguay and Argentina. In Argentina, it is known as "Selva Misionera".
The Atlantic Forest region includes forests of several variations:
The Atlantic Forest is unusual in that it extends as a true tropical rainforest to latitudes as high as 24°S. This is because the trade winds produce precipitation throughout the southern winter. In fact, the northern Zona da Mata of northeastern Brazil receives much more rainfall between May and August than during the southern summer.
During glacial periods in the Pleistocene, the Atlantic Forest is known to have shrunk to extremely small fragmented refugia in highly sheltered gullies, being separated by areas of dry forest or semi-deserts known as caatingas. Some maps even suggest the forest actually survived in moist pockets well away from the coastline where its endemic rainforest species mixed with much cooler-climate species. Unlike refugia for equatorial rainforests, the refuges for the Atlantic Forest have never been the product of detailed identification.

""Drymoreomys"" is a rodent genus in the tribe Oryzomyini that lives in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The single species, ""D. albimaculatus"", is known only from the states of São Paulo and Santa Catarina and was not named until 2011. It lives in the humid forest on the eastern slopes of the Serra do Mar and perhaps reproduces year-round. Although its range is relatively large and includes some protected areas, it is patchy and threatened, and the discoverers recommend that the animal be considered "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red List. Within Oryzomyini, "Drymoreomys" appears to be most closely related to "Eremoryzomys" from the Andes of Peru, a biogeographically unusual relationship, in that the two populations are widely separated and each is adapted to an arid or a moist environment.
With a body mass of 44–64 g , "Drymoreomys" is a medium-sized rodent with long fur that is orange to reddish-buff above and grayish with several white patches below. The pads on the hindfeet are very well developed and there is brown fur on the upper sides of the feet. The tail is brown above and below. The front part of the skull is relatively long and the ridges on the braincase are weak. The palate is short, with its back margin between the third molars. Several traits of the genitals are not seen in any other oryzomyine rodent.
"Drymoreomys" was first recorded in 1992 by Meika Mustrangi in the state of São Paulo. The animal was not, however, formally described until 2011, when Alexandre Percequillo and colleagues named it as a new genus and species within the tribe Oryzomyini: "Drymoreomys albimaculatus". The generic name, "Drymoreomys", combines the Greek "δρυμός" , meaning "forest", "ὄρειος" , meaning "mountain-dwelling", and "μῦς" , meaning "mouse". The name refers to the animal's occurrence in mountain forest. The specific name, "albimaculatus", derives from the Latin "albus", meaning "white", and "maculatus", meaning "spotted", a reference to the spots of white in the animal's fur. Percequillo and colleagues found little geographic variation among samples of "Drymoreomys", although a few traits differ in frequency between populations from the states of São Paulo and Santa Catarina.

Putting together strengths among communities, environmentalists and the planted trees industry has been allowing the recovery of the Atlantic Forest, home to 20,000 species of native plants and 270 species of mammals. This important action is reflected in the video, which was produced by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), in partnership with the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) and the New Generation Plantations (NGP).

The striped manakin (Machaeropterus regulus) is a small South American species of bird in the Pipridae family. Its distribution is highly disjunct: The nominate subspecies is found in Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil, while the striolatus group is found in forests in western Brazil, northeastern Peru, eastern Ecuador, Colombia, and western and southern Venezuela. Males of the former group have redder underparts than males of the latter, and the two are sometimes treated as separate species, the eastern striped manakin (M. regulus) and the western striped manakin (M. striolatus). In both, the males have a bright red crown, which the female lack.
Like many other manakins, the males cluster in a leks to attract females. After mating, the females rear the chicks on without the help of the males.

STORYLINE
Firefighters in Uruguay on Tuesday continued to battle massive forest fires that were spreading on the Atlantic Coast.
Authorities said strong winds had help spread the fires burning in Punta del Diablo in Rocha Province, about 300 kilometres (180 miles) east of Montevideo.
The province's chief of police said at least one thousand people had been evacuated from the region and warned that the situation was u-r-g-e-n-t.
Winds of up to 70 kilometres (42 miles) per hour fanned the forest fires, which destroyed houses and other structures.
Police said more than one-thousand hectares were burning.

The Coast of the Atlantic Forest has been the tourist name since 2003, for the region that encompasses the nine cities of the coastal area of São Paulo known as Baixada Santista, which are: Bertioga, Cubatão, Guarujá, Santos, São Vicente, Praia Grande, Mongaguá, Itanhaém and Peruíbe. The nine cities, therefore, form an only destination with several reasons for being visited: beaches, ecotourism, leisure, adventure, sports, gastronomy, history, culture and business. This diversity turns the Coast of the Atlantic Forest into ‘a unique experience for you’. Each city has its peculiarities, with options for all tastes, and they complete each other, offering a shoreline 161 km long, lush Atlantic Forest, historical and cultural attractions, besides a diversified cuisine and high quality structure for events and business.

The giant Amazon, has since its birth in the Andes to its mouth, 6868 miles, the equivalent distance between New York and Berlin. We begin our journey on Brazilian lands, Tabatinga.
We full ourselves with nature and immerse us in a beautiful and rewarding journey flying over the Amazon River. We will check that this water-flow not only carries water, also blood of men and women who inhabit the planet. Only fifteen million years ago that this giant empties into the Atlantic. Before it traveled across the American continent, looking at Asia.
The river of thousand faces, with over 1,100 tributaries, is an arterial system by running a fifth of the world's freshwater. Contemplate the bravery of the Black River, the fourth largest in the world, and the stunning contrast of colors to blend with the Amazon River.
A paradise in which everything works perfectly. Amazon is harmonious, organized and beautiful.
