The Eastern Scheldt (Dutch: Oosterschelde) is a tidal basin in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands, between Schouwen-Duiveland and Tholen on the north and Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland on the south. It is also the largest national park in the Netherlands, founded in 2002.
During the Roman Era it was the major mouth of the Scheldt River. Before the St. Felix's Flood of 1530, it flowed north as a river from the east end of the Westerschelde, turned west a little west of Bergen op Zoom, and then west along the north edge of what is now the Verdronken Land van Reimerswaal, and after that widened into an estuary. Later parts of that lost land were reclaimed, restricting part of the connection to the Scheldt River to a narrow channel called the Kreekrak, which silted up and became unnavigable. In 1867 the Kreekrak was closed off with a railway embankment, connecting in the process the island of Zuid-Beveland to the mainland of North Brabant. From that moment on, the Oosterschelde lost its connection with the Scheldt, and is no longer functioning as an estuary.

Cape Horn (Dutch: Kaap Hoorn , Spanish: Cabo de Hornos), named after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands, is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, and is located on the small Hornos Island. Although not the most southerly point of South America (which are the Diego Ramírez Islands), Cape Horn marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage and marks where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans collide. For decades it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. The waters around Cape Horn are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and Icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard.

Ocean voyage to Cape Horn, one of the legs of the 1918-built OOSTERSCHELDE's circumnavigation in 1996-1998. She left Tauranga (NZ) on Oct 22nd 1997 and arrived at Cape Horn on Nov 11th 1997. The ceremony at Cape Horn, on behalf of the Dutch Cap Horniers Foundation, was to commemorate all the sailors who lost their life at this infamous location. The poem read at the occasion is 'Sea-fever' by John Masefield. The three-masted topsail schooner is Netherlands' biggest restored sailing ship. Aerial footage of the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier in Zeeland. Opened on October 4th 1986 by Queen Beatrix at a cost of 2.5 billion Euros, it is said to be the most impressive storm surge structure in the Netherlands. The barrier has a total length of three kilometres and crosses three channels: the Hammen, the Schaar van Roggeplaat and the Roompot. It consists of 65 concrete piers and 62 large sluice gates. The gates remain open under normal conditions, thus maintaining three quarters of the natural tidal movement. Under adverse weather conditions, the gates are closed.

The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam.
