With the world’s biggest dam “Three Gorges Dam” nearby, Chongqing will have an almost unlimited supply of cheap energy to support its growing economy. Not only is the Chongqing area the largest producer of motorcycles in China but also it has attracted a lot of foreign direct investment by many multinational corporations such as Ford, Mazda, HSBC, Citibank, Deutsche Bank and Walmart. Chongqing is one of China’s major inland ports. Since it sits at the juncture of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers, the city’s port serves not only as an embarkation area for tourist ships traveling on the Yangtze River but also the port ships bulk goods such as coal, etc. which represents a majority of its business. The Chongqing area is one of China’s largest producers of iron, steel and aluminum, and it has some of the largest deposits in China of rare metals and inland natural gas. One of the challenges the region faces is improving its air quality. Chongqing was rated as on of the top ten worst cities for air pollution.
